From the chaos born you come ...the glori-

ous brilliance of the heavens surrounds you.

And the first glorious being you encounter is a

wizard f umbl ing abou t in his grey cloak.

"Eh? Well I don 't seem to recall seeing you

wandering about the realms of the gods

before Never had much of a memory for

names. I suppose that it doesn't much matter

since you don' t have one yet. Oh, not to wor-

ry, not to worry, that will come in time. Every-

one gets a name you know. Hard to keep our

    records straight here without it

"I 'm Fizban, Fizban the Fabulous, but you

can call me...er, well, whatever. I guess some

would call me the big guy around here, but

the truth of it is a bit more complicated than

that. Still, I am here to help you get on your

way into the fabulous world that we have pre-

pared for you. Tragedy and comedy, honor

    and mystery await you there

"I suppose you will want to get your bear-

ings first, eh? Not easy stepping out of the

chaos and trying to make sense of the new uni-

verse, is it? Well never you fear, for you have

    Fizbur the Feverles...er, Fasbar the

Flaver...well, I am at your side every step of

    the way.

"So let's...hmmmm. This crazy wizard is

my favorite aspect, but I see that it is a bit dif-

ficult for you just now. Let's try something a

bit more like what you would expect."

The old man's robes flare suddenly with

striking rays of light. His form rises before you

transformed into the sh ining brilliance of the

    greatest of benevolent dragons: Paladine.

    Beyond.

There, before the be ginni ng, they dwelt in

joy in the presence of the High God whose

child ren they were. It was there decreed that a

new time and place would come to be. Time

would there begin again, spirits would live

and, in the course of time, new power would

    come to be.

    universe was brought to be.

Gods of Evil sought to make the spirits their

slaves to do their every bidding. The Gods of

Neut rali ty sought a balance: to give the spirits

freedom to choose for themselves whether

they would serve Good or Evil.

And so the All-Saints War raged among the

heavens. The Good an d Neutra l Gods com-

bin ed forces to keep Evil from a final victory.

Then spoke the High God from Beyond,

decreeing the Balance of the World. The Gods

of Good, Evil, and Neutra lity would each be

allowed to bestow one gift upon the spirits.

The Gods of Good gave the spirits life and

physical form. Thus, the spirits gained control

over the material world and became more like

the Gods themselves. The Gods of Good

hoped the spirits would bring peace and order

to the worlds and lead them along the path tO

    righteousness.

The Gods of Evil decreed that these physi-

cal beings would hun ger and thirst and have

to work to satisfy their needs. The Gods of Evil

hoped that through hung er and suffering they

    could subjugate the races.

The Gods of Neutrality gave the spirits the

gift of free will, to choose freely between

Good and Evil. Thus did they preserve the

    Balance.

And so the Gods created the world of

Krynn as a dwelling place for the spirits. The

High God decreed that each spirit could

choose his own way through life. Then would

come death, the passage from Krynn to the

    next state of existence.

All of the universe stands upon the Great

Triangle. This fou nda tion has always existed

and will exist down through the ages of time

and u ntil the e nd of the world.

At the apexes of the triangles stand the

three anchors upon which the universe is

built. These are known among men as Good,

Evil, and Neutrality. It is into these positions

that the gods align themselves in their effort

to maint ain progress in the universe they have

    brought into being.

    l h c p l a c e o f m o r t a l s

Many races came int o being from the spirits

that awoke. First were the elves, most favored

by the Gods of Good. Elves are the Shapers of

the world, possessing good magic to b end nat.

ure to their will. They have the longest life

span of all the spirits; although they change

the wor ld, they themselves change very little.

The h uman race is most favored by the

Gods of Neutrality, although the souls of men

are coveted by the Gods of both Good and

Evil. Men can choose freely between good and

evil. Their shorter time in the world is spent in

striving for power and knowledge. They are

quick to think and to act --of ten withou t con-

sidering the consequences. Thus men give the

    world motion.

The race of ogres is most favored by the

Gods of Evil. In the beg inn ing , the ogres were

the most beautiful of the races, but they could

think only of their hungers. They were easily

enslaved by their needs, a nd the ir beau ty van-

ished as their hungers devoured them. Ogres

are selfish and cruel; they delight in inflicting

pain an d suffering upon the weak.

The High God created the fourth class of

beings: the animals. He created them with a

balance of Good, Evil, and Neutrality, and

th .y were born of the world itself. Dragons are

the lords of the animal kingdom. They are

free to choose among the alignments of the

    gods.

Whe n the spirits awoke at the soundi ng of

Reorx's hammer, many of them found their

way into the alignments of the gods through

their i nherent natures. The elves were drawn

naturally toward the Good a lignm ent while

the ogres were drawn to that of Evil. The ani-

mals of the world were Neutral in the ir aspeci

and came silently under the domain of the

    Neutral gods.

However, most wondrous were the spirits

    called the Maran, meaning "Free-willed."

These were men who possessed the ability to

choose their destinies. Not placed at any of

the three poles of the gods' triangle , humans

swing in the m iddle o f the triangle from pole

to pole to pole. This choice and free agency

gives mot ion to the universe and propels it

    forward.

Not only does man give motion to the uni-

verse, but he also inspires the other races to

action. Thus these are the most prized of all

    the souls that awakened.

    k ynn

Those who find their way from the heavens

to their mortal existences upon the face of

Krynn receive their lots in life. This is not to

say that this is all that a soul may become in

the world--far from it. Because of the gift of

the High God to all humanity, free will brings

to the circles of the world an i nfini te numbe r

of people and viewpoints. It is up to you to

determine who you become and what you do.

Yet in the be ginning you start with a certain

lot in life--a classification as to who you are

and what you may become. These classifica-

tions have existed since the beginningof time.

Some of these character types are universa l

and exist not only in Kry nn, bu t also on other

worlds far from the sight and knowledge of

the True Gods. Still others are unique to this

world of Krynn and exist nowhere else in all

    the universes.

    S ] anOa O C l as se s

While there are many more classes than are

given here, these are the ones you are now free

to choose. Of those classes tha t are common to

man y differen t universes, the following are

possible for you in your sojourn in Krynn.

These are types that are truly universal. Also

listed are those types that are unique to the

realms of K ryn n-- these appear in italic type.

    Clerics heathen): Clerics who worship

gods other than the True Gods are considered

heathe n clerics in the world of Krynn. They

are powerless and receive no blessings from

the gods. This class of characters includes cler-

ics from other universes who have somehow

come to K rynn by chance or design from those

    other realms.

Druids heathen): As with heathen clerics,

this refers to that class of druid that has come

from beyond Krynn. They also lose their

powers upon co ming to Krynn.

    Holy Orders o f the S tars

    This title refers to

the three general categories of cler ics that

serve the gods of this universe. These follow

the lines of Good, Evil, or Neutrality. Within

these three divisions are fou nd the clerics and

orders of each of the gods individually. Each

order does service to its god a nd gains its

powers dependent upon the spheres of influ-

ence which that god holds. As there are six

separate gods in each of these divisions not

count ing the gods of magic), there are no

fewer than 18 separate True Gods who main-

tai n a variety of orders each. Each has its own

power and sphere of influence that deter-

mines the powers that its priests have.

Fighters: Those of might and weapons.

These do bat tle for others or for their own pur-

    poses.

Barbarians: Savages of the wilds. Th ough

undisci plined in the ways of civilized nations ,

they are fierce warriors and have empathy with

nature. Barbarians in K rynn generally come

from the no rther n reaches of Ergoth and the

    badlands of Khur.

    Rangers: Wilderness masters. These folk

travel the plains of Krynn far and wide an d are

well versed in wilderness lore. They generally

come from Nordmaar regions as well as the

plains areas about Tarsis and Abanasinia .

    Cavaliers: Noble Knights of kingdoms.

These are always foun d i n service of indiv idual

kingdoms and may be considered candidates

    for the Knights of Sotamnia.

Paladins: Knights in the cause of good.

Like cavaliers, these m en are in single service

rather than to the greater Knighthood of the

Solamnic Orders. Their obedience and fealty

is sworn not to a monarch but to a deity of

    good.

Knigh ts o f So lamnia

    These are really three

distinct orders grouped into one. The orders

are the Knights of the Crown, Knights of the

acquired as a Knight of Solamnia (whichever

    is higher).

    Magic-Users/lllusionists: No determina-

tion of which order the magic-user will follow

is made before he reaches 3d level (see

    Wi z

    page 27). The Wizards

of High Sorcery make no clear-cut distinction

    between magic-users and illusionists, as

opposed to the situation in many AD&D

games. What wizards are or believe is pretty

much left up to th em prior to 3d level.

    Magic-users and illusionists from other

campaigns and who are over 3d level are

immedia tely branded as renegades. The rules

for renegade wizards are foun d in the

    Wizards

o f H igh Sorce~ They must either join the

order or be hunted by them. It is almost

always a quick and tragic end for renegades

    unless they join the orders.

Characters of other classes revert the ir

major classes when they enter Krynn, with

experience points equal to the mid-point of

their current level. Monks, for example,

become heath en clerics of equa l level. There

are no assassin characters in Krynn. These

    _would become thieves.

    f ,

    W hat s

    yo ur l n rnenl:?

This question comes up often in AD&D

games. A lignm ent in Krynn has important

effects that are very different from a standard

AD&D campaign. The types of spells availa-

ble to a magic-user or cleric and the abilities of

a Kn ight of Solamnia are all affected by the

character's alignm ent. In most AD&D cam-

paigns, the player chooses the alignment of

his PC and th en tries to act accordingly. Align-

men t in Krynn is handled differently. The

alignment of a PC is determined by his

actions, not the other way around.

Characters in Krynn declare their mora/

    alignmenrs

(good, neut ral, or evil) at the

begi nnin g of the game, thoug h sometimes

character class determines the starting align-

ment . For example, Knigh ts of Solamnia who

begin as Knights of the Crown have their mor-

al a lignm ent set for them initially as good.

DMs can use the Character Alignment

Tracking chart at the back of the book (page

    114) to keep track of each PC's moral align-

ment as it changes according to the PC's

actions, Each PC's moral al ignmen t starts at

the midpoint of his chosen alignment on the

chart. Each time the PC performs an action

that the DM decides is outside the bounds of

the PC's current align ment, the DM marks the

PC's new alignment position on the chart

from 1 to 3 points in the direction of the

    action performed.

As a character shifts alignment, he passes

into a grey area between the a lignments. This

area warns the PC that his actions are not in

line with the beliefs of his alignme nt. A char-

acter who ente rs a grey area incurs the follow-

    ing effects:

    eneRal bmmtawons

    m

    k ynn

Player characters in. other worlds can

advance to unlimited levels, but not in

Krynn. Once a player character advances

beyond 18th level, the gods of Krynn feel tha t

it is time to reassign h im to some othe r world.

Fortunately for the lovers of Kryn n, advance-

ment beyond 18th level is not mandatory.

Your PC has the uni que ability to refuse such

advancement (and thereby stay within the

world of Krynn). It is up to you.

Those few ind ividuals who remain in the

9world beyond 18th level do so either by special

permission of the gods or by unnat ural means.

The priviledged few include such beings as

the Dragon Highlords of the Queen of Dark-

hess or Raistlin . Takhisis is always out to

destroy the balance of the world. This is not to

say that she grants such boons without great

reason. The rule is that PCs who wish to

remain in Krynn must forfeit any advance-

ment beyond 18th level regardless of clas s;if

they advance beyond that, the gods remove

    them from Krynn.

    Attack

    Defense

    Wizard Spells

    Cleric Spells

When a PC's alig nment passes from the

grey area into another alignment, shift the

character's al ignme nt to the mi dpoi nt of the

new alignment. (The penalties for being in

the transition area between alignments go

away, but now the PC is subject to the stric-

tures of his new align ment. ) For example, if a

character's a lig nment just passed from the

grey area between good and neutral into the

area of neutral, mark his alignment in the

middle of the neutra l area. This prevents a PC

from bounc ing back and forth betw een align-

ments too easily. It also makes him work hard

if he wants to regain his old alig nment. Wh en

a change in align ment occurs, do not inform

the player that his PC has

    u s t

    changed align-

ment . Wait until he tries to perform an action

that depends on his alignment, then tell him

it doe sn't work. It's up to the player to realize

what happen ed and how to fix it.

Changes of al ignment can have drastic con-

sequences for ce rtain character classes. Clerics

who change their alignment are considered

    losr

and immediately lose two levels and all

thei r spell-casting abilit ies unt il they either

repent or find ano ther god to serve. Wizards

who gain their magic by the grace of the

moons of magic and who then become rene-

gades (see page 36) also lose two levels. In the

case of wizards, however, they revert to the

robes of their new alignme nt and do no t have

to seek out new powers as do clerics. Knights

of Solamnia lose position an d abilities by fall-

ing from grace they become fighters unt il

    they redeem themselves.

Of course, d oing deeds that are in line with

their old alignments tend to shift t hem back.

The special abilities and aids that each of

the Orders of Knights bestows upon its mem-

bers are directly d epen dent upo n how' well

each Knigh t follows the laws of his organiza-

    - 1 to hit opponent .

+ 1 to own armor class ~ [ion.

    10% fails to recall *

    10% fails to recall

    * When a wizard attempts to use any sp el l

roll ldlO0. If the result is 10 or less, then the

spell simply cannot be recalled and does not

function. Note that the player would not

know about this until the PC fails to cast a

    spell.

Clerics can also fail to recall a spell in the

same way. In addition, clerical spells that are

special to the god the cleric serves (e.g., heal-

ing spells to Mishakal) have a 20% chance of

not being acquired for the day. Knights of

Solamnia who have clerical spell-casting abili-

ties are also subject to this penalty.
