PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

As I scan the term 2 calendar I realise the many varied and exciting events that make up our School program. In the past week our Year 10 students have actively organised and taken part in Work Experience.

This is an essential program in giving students a taste of what to expect in the workforce and in many cases confirming whether they would want to follow this pathway. It is pleasing that reports back from employers are full of praise for how our students perform.

I have watched with interest how leading up to this week our Year 10 students have enthusiastically organised, prepared and got themselves in correct attire to take part in each day. This is very much about preparation for work in the future. It is also the same process that they must employ each day in coming to work at school, a place where we are preparing our students for life after the classroom.

It is essential that Parents, staff and students work together to make sure that this organisation and preparation for each days challenges is routine:

Being Prepared - required homework for the day is prepared - diary check to make sure homework and assignments are completed. You are rested and prepared for the learning

challenges ahead. You have all the correct resources and materials organised.

Presenting yourself – the organised way you present yourself to others – wearing the correct uniform, bringing all the correct materials etc.

Punctuality and attendance: you are organised to be on time to school.” Regularly attendance is and always has been the key to success”.

Many of these traits we practice at school every day are important work and life skills for success.

To the up and coming Sports Teams for, “Adelaide Cross Country” and the “9-a-side Football” I wish them every success in their performances and the way in which they represent the school.

As the end of Semester 1 (end of week 8) approaches teachers will begin the process of Report Writing giving feedback and grades on the semester of work and Mid-Year Exams in Years 11 and 12.

Finally I would like to warmly invite all parents and community members to our Night under Lights - Arts evening and Wine Launch. This will be held from 5.30pm – 7:30 pm in the School Hall. The Waikerie High School 2014 Vintage will be launched with canopies at 6:30pm. Students will showcase their talents in the Visual and Performing Arts throughout the Arts Week and on the night.

I look forward to speaking with you on the night.

YEAR 11 BIOLOGY CAMP

On Monday the 18th May, 31 Year 11 Biology students, Mr Tripodi, Miss Zerner and Mrs Haynes travelled to Yookamurra Sanctuary to look at Ecology and the importance of preserving wildlife.

Noel, Anna and Mel were wonderful hosts, preparing and cooking the wonderful food, and conducting the activities and walks.

The students learnt about the Mallee ecosystem, and the positive human impacts that Yookamurra has had on endangered species. Yookamurra breeds and protects

Numbats, Bilbies, Boodie and Woylie Bettongs.

On the first day, students learnt to scour an area and collect different scats from animals. Once the students collected their different scats, in groups they dissected the scats and tried to work out

which animal they were from.

On both nights half the students went on a nocturnal walk to survey the nightlife. The first night, the group was chased by the resident wombat. On the second night, the group saw the elusive Bilby. Both groups

saw possums, boodies and heard bats.

The second day, the students were shown the breeding programs and then used radio tracking to find an animal that had been hidden.

All in all, the camp was a very valuable experience for the students, giving them a hands on experience of Ecology. Thanks must go to Paul Tripodi, Steph Zerner and Donna Haynes for organising and supervising the camp.

EXCURSION TO THE THEATRE

On the 27th May, Miss Smitran’s Year 10/11 Drama class and Mrs Collin’s Year 9 English class attended a performance by the State Theatre Company at Her Majesty’s Theatre in Adelaide. The performance, ‘Masquerade’, was based on the acclaimed children’s book written by Kit Williams in the 1970’s, which sparked a nationwide treasure hunt in Britain. In the play, a mother reads her cancer-ridden son the story as he undergoes treatment, while the characters come to life on the stage around them.

After viewing the production, we walked to the Festival Theatre, where we received a behind-the-scenes tour. As we went through, we learned about all the different jobs there are in the theatre.

All who attended the performance agreed that it was a stunning piece of theatre. The whole day was a valuable experience for all involved, and we are very grateful to our teachers for organising the trip.

SAFE SCHOOLS COALITION

Last year Waikerie High School signed up to the National Safe Schools Coalition through Shine SA. The Safe Schools Coalition is dedicated to helping schools to be safer and more inclusive for same sex attracted, intersex and gender diverse students, school staff and families.

The Safe Schools Coalition is creating change to ensure that every student and every teacher in every school has access to a safe and inclusive learning environment. The vision of the nationally endorsed National Safe Schools Framework is to build safe school communities where diversity is valued, the risk from all types of harm is minimised and all members of the community feel respected, included and supported.

Anne Leahy (Teacher), Bec Barker (Social Worker) and two of our SRC students Temika Miller and Lana Woollatt had the opportunity to attend the annual Action Day.

Following the Action Day the SRC will be presenting the Safe Schools Coalition to the Waikerie High School during an assembly, there will be a staff training with Shine SA in

Term 3 and an action/support team will be formed, to create meaningful change in conjunction with the SRC and school. For more information please visit www.safeschoolscoalition.org.au or contact our Social Worker, Bec Barker.

YEAR 11 WINE MAKING

Over the past semester, the students have been extremely busy preparing the 2014 Shiraz, and making the 2015 Shiraz from the school vineyard. The students, Mrs Haynes and Mrs Grieger,

Mr Tripodi and Colleen Anderson-Peters harvested the grapes from the vineyard in early February. The students were then involved in crushing, fermenting, monitoring, pressing and racking of the wine.

They were also involved in bottling and labelling the 2014 Shiraz which will be available to purchase on the 11th of June at “Night under the lights”.

On Wednesday the 6th of May, the Year 11

Viticulture class went for an excursion to local winery “Growers Wine Group”. Steven Craig, the Senior Wine maker, kindly offered to take the students around to see a large scale winemaking facility. He showed the students the different types of equipment used to clean the wine that we don’t have access to at school. The students were most interested in the different types of machines that are much larger than the machines we

use at the school winery to process. A huge thank you to Growers Wine Group, for allowing the students to tour the winery in a busy part of their vintage.

The students will be launching the 2014 Shiraz on Thursday the 11th June and will be involved in the presentation on the night. The wine is available for $10 a bottle or $100 a case and

EFTPOS will be available on the night.

If you are not able to make the wine launch and you wish to purchase some wine, please fill out the slip below and hand it in to the Book Room with payment. We ran out of the wine last year, and we have been fortunate enough to have some Limestone Coast Shiraz donated as a blender into the 2014 Shiraz from the Loxton Wine Group. We hope to see you next week at the Wine launch.

INTERSCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY 26TH MAY AT BERRI

Well done to the members of a huge squad of 60 students who competed at the recent Riverland interschool cross country. As usual, the standard of racing was

excellent and Waikerie performed well.

As a team the boys performed well winning the U15 Pennant and finishing 3rd in the U16 and Open age groups. The girls finished 4th in all age groups. Waikerie finished 4th overall.

Individually, there were many medal winners. Tristan Geehman 1st Open Boys Taran Brock 1st U16 Boys Declan Sidhu 1st U15 Boys Jarrad Bee 3rd U15 Boys Brycen Brock 3rd U13 Boys Rachel Fillmore 3rd U15 Girls

RIVERLAND CHALLENGE – BEACH VOLLEYBALL

Seven Year 12 PE students travelled to Loxton High School on Sunday the 24th May for the inaugraul Beach Volleyball Competition.

The day was hosted by the SA Sports Institute (SASI) and Volleyball SA. Current squad members attended the day and gave students

from Waikerie, Loxton and Renmark some handy tips.

Waikerie performed well against the other teams with the boys and girls both winning one of their four games. A very good performance considering the boys played with three players instead of four! I thank the students for taking the opportunity to hone their skills as Volleyball is the current major practical in the PE course.

Boys: Braden Herrmann, Alex Lean, Tristan Geehman Girls: Hayley Campbell, Lana Woollatt, Laura Collins, Charlotte Hahn KO Volleyball – Round 1 – 28th May at Marden Sports Centre Girls – eight girls consisting of four Year 12s and four Year 11s competed in the round robin of four teams. The girls warmed into the matching dropping the first game to Nazareth College but gaining victory against Temple College. Mt Barker Waldorf, the eventual round winners, were too strong in the third match. The girls played off for third and fourth spots but ended up losing to Nazareth. Nonetheless, great experience for our group and it was pleasing to see the group work well together.

Boys: – The boys have made the finals series twice over the past four years, so expectation of reaching the next round was high. Game 1: Waikerie 3 sets to 0 defeated Nazareth Game 2: Waikerie 2 sets to 1 defeated Temple Game 3: Waikerie 2 sets to 1 defeated Millicent Game 4: Waikerie 1 set to 2 lost to Mt. Barker Waldorf

The day was always going to come down to the last match as Waikerie and Mt Barker Waldorf were by far the strongest two teams coming into the last match undefeated. Our boys won the first set but missed their chances in the second and third to lose the match. The boys were disappointed; however, I felt the opposition were stronger this year in the first round than last year and Mt Barker Waldorf played with very good structure.

WAIKERIE HIGH S OPEN BOYS FOOTBALL 2015

On Friday the 22nd May, Waikerie High School had an Open boys Football side compete in the State Wide Knockout Competition for the first time in many years.

On the day we had drawn to play our neighbouring school Glossop up on their home ground which was always going to be a hard task. Making that task even harder was the last minute withdrawal of players because of injury and a few other reasons, which left our side with the bare minimum players to fill a side on the day. To all of the boy’s credit, although undermanned, they battled hard against a strong Glossop side and were lead brilliantly by the sides Captain Alex Lean. Eventually the team fell short losing by 58 points.

Better players on the day for Waikerie High School were Alex Lean (as mentioned above), Tristian Geehmann, Taran Brock, Dylan Hahn, Jasman Singh,

Mantaj Singh and Ryan Shaw. Goal Kickers were; Jasman Singh 3, Ryan Shaw, Dylan Hahn and Daimon Barrow 1 each.

As a school we should be proud of the efforts put in by the students on the day, knowing that going in to next year’s competition we will go in better prepared, knowing what we are up against. A big thank you must go to Anton Barrow and Jon Mathews for helping with transport and helping out with the side, Sam Parsons for being the teams runner, and all the parents who came to support on the day.
