You will remember that in last month’s column, I really talked up the Marshall Goldman Wine Tasting and BBQ and I am happy to say that Bill Polewchak and Joe Levak and his team at Marshall Goldman did not disappoint. We had a fantastic event with a great turnout of almost 150 people. Everyone got to enjoy the 86 lbs of pork butt, two turkeys, and 20 lbs of sausage that Bill smoked all night along with a ton of delicious side dishes. He also brought along a dozen wines for us all to taste – I was in heaven with 6 differ-ent reds to try. And to top it all off, we got to wander through the exotic car utopia that is Marshall Goldman. Joe even start-ed up a couple cars to add some music to the event. Thanks to Bill, Joe and the Forcina’s for putting on the event as well as June and Karen, our charity chairs, who were able to raise over $1200 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

October bring us the first of three Tech Sessions planned for this fall. The event is on October 27 and starts at Aircooled Autos and then finishes up at the Sports Car Factory. Aircooled Autos is a shop owned by Mike Immarino that special-izes in classic Porsches and VW’s engines. Mike’s shop sits behind his house which is an old restored school house out in Montville. At any given time you will find a nice selection of 356’s and old VW’s at his shop and he is a wealth of informa-tion about the classics.

After we get our fill of Mike’s shop, we will then head down the road to the Sports Car Factory that is owned by Rick Ben-nett. The Sports Car Factory, which also specializes in classic Porsche and VW’s is where Mike worked before starting his own shop. If you are a fan of the cars that got Porsche started, then this is an event not to be missed.

Next up on the Tech Session schedule is a return to Steinel’s. Steinel’s has al-

ways been a favorite on the tech session schedule, and we are excited to be head-ed back there this fall. Erik and his team always put

on great tech sessions that cover practi-cal, hand’s-on topics about the care and feeding of Porsches. This year he is go-ing to be going over a very timely topic, which is getting your Porsche ready to survive the winter. While winter is some-thing we would all rather not think about, it’s nice to know exactly what needs to be done to our cars to store them over the winter and have them ready to roll at the first sign of spring. It is also always fun to wander around Eric’s shop and check out all the cool cars and his current projects.

And finally, in December we have our fi-nal Tech Session of the year at Porsche of Beachwood. Kellen Miller, Master Porsche mechanic, connoisseur of cigars and craft beers, and Secretary of our club, will be talking about the M96 and M97 engines found in late model Porsches. This will be a great session for those of you that love to get into the details of Porsche engines and talk about the strengths and weak-nesses of the designs.

I look forward to seeing you all embrace your inner gearhead at these events.

Eastern Rallye Run from a 2nd place perspective

    by Bill VerDuin

August 18: beautiful weather, beautiful cars all lined up at Squire’s Castle waiting for the excitement of the NORPCA Rallye to begin. Who could contain themselves? But we were brave….

Each of us left at the time designated by Ral-lyeMasters Bob Palmer and Ava Singerman. And off we went! In my case, in my 1985 911, just turned 221,000 mi. and running great, and accompanied by my lovely navigator, Cynthia. We followed directions, with turns and distances between them almost always specified. We drove absolutely beautiful roads well suited for Porsches; wonderful scenery, so many interesting things to see.

This was not a time and distance rallye requir-ing real attention to speed. Instead, it was designed for fun and fun it was. It was essen-tially a scavenger hunt done with cars. We looked for clues, some pretty clear-cut, some pretty cryptic. How many railroad crossings were there? Not so tough if you remember to pay attention. Others a little harder: what exactly are we looking for, jungle animals in NE Ohio? Turns out, one artistic homeown-er created giant animal sculptures in his or her front yard…how fun, and totally unex-pected! As we pulled up, their neighbor was pulling out and was apparently pretty used to people coming to see her neighbor’s un-usual and totally unexpected display of yard art. Another clue: Guard Dogs? What are we looking for? Turned out to be cast iron drive-way dogs overseeing a circular drive. So fun to see all these things in an area my wife and I have lived in most of our lives and figured we knew pretty well.

When we got to the rallye celebration at Grand River Cellars we learned that we were by far the last contestants to get to the win-ery. Yes, we encountered the challenges ev-eryone encountered. Near the beginning, a street fair blocked our route. Did Mighty Porsche run the barricades and proceed undaunted through the carnage we would create? No, we asked the police officer at the barricade for advice and did the easy workaround he suggested. What about the turn accidentally not indicated near the end of the rallye? Good thing my bride/naviga-tor has an infinitely better sense of direction than I so she figured out within a few miles that our path wasn’t leading us to our next destination, so she regrouped and faked a workaround. Actually, Cynthia thought our Rallye Mistress was just having fun with par-ticipants, leaving out the one turn.

So these things didn’t make us particularly late. What did? The Arby’s lunch, the brief bio break and brief walks through not one, but two parks, and mostly the attention to detail. My navigator likes to win, so we did a number of repeats up and down sections of road in search of elusive clues. And we got most of them. We were sorry once we learned that we kept everyone else at the winery wait-ing, but from a totally selfish point of view, it was so worth it. We went home with prizes and the Second Place trophy, a suitably huge item now proudly gracing our dresser. The kids and grandkids will be so impressed……

What a fun way to spend a beautiful day, in beautiful scenery, learning our community at a new level and having fun with friends. Thanks to Bob and Ava and everyone else who made all this possible! Perhaps next year we will be at the top of the podium (we’ll skip the Arby’s)!!

Eastern Rallye Run from the winner’s perspective

    by Jennifer Wendell

On the beautiful day of August 18th, Ava and Bob, NOR’s Rallyemasters, orchestrated the 2012 Eastern Rallye Run. Twenty-one cars met at the starting point of Squire’s Castle in the Metro Parks of Willoughby Hills to enjoy some fun, friendly competi-tion, and for any of you that have partici-pated in one of these rallyes, a tiny bit of torture. The group gathered ranged from those who had never run a rallye before to those who have participated in numerous ones. The first car got their directions and clues shortly after 11:30 a.m. and the re-maining cars followed in timed intervals…let the fun begin.

Enthusiasm was high as we started out on this sixty-two mile route. Unfortunately near the start of the rallye a street fair popped up that wasn’t in the plans, but no one participating let that stand in the way of our fun or stopped us from continuing. After a little resourcefulness and detouring everyone got back on the route and back to the 50 questions. Once again Bob and Ava came up with a route that would wind us along amazing tree-lined roads that, at times, took us up near Lake Erie. It took us to where we would see “giraffes, monkeys, and elephants” in the trees (at least if you were looking hard enough) and, for any-one not familiar with this part of Northeast Ohio, we got to go on a real tour as we went through sixteen cities or villages. Hopefully you were counting along the way since that was the answer to one of the bonus questions!

One of the questions that gave us all prob-lems was “where is the weird-looking tree?” I can tell you that there were more than a few disagreements about that answer in our car. One of the other favorite answers forced us to go back in time to remember the “All Skate”.

As we came near the end of the rallye it al-most felt like a “Griswold’s” family vacation coming to an end with all the mis-turns, mis-steps, and mini-disagreements be-tween the driver and the navigator. But, in the end it was all fun and a ride I’d go on again. Before it was over we were lucky enough to be welcomed by the staff and the Rallyemasters at the Grand River Cellars

for some good food and some fine wine. As we entered the first thing everyone did was to go to the picture board to see who was right and what was that weird looking tree? After finding out the correct answers it was time to enjoy some fellowship with the oth-er Rallyers and enjoy some delicious food that the winery had to offer. Before the evening was over, thophies and prizes were handed out for 1st, 2nd , and 3rd places as well as for the car with the most doors. That belonged to new member, Merilee Marshall with her 2011 Panamera.

In the end I’ve figured out it doesn’t matter what spot you left in the beginning or what place you arrived to the finish in the end…or even how long it takes you during the rallye. In this rallye the 21st car out was the 11th back; the 6th out was the 6th back and both missed 12 questions. The 12th car out was the 3rd car back and came in 3rd, the 14th car out was the 22nd back and came in 2nd. And us …we were 8th out and 21st back and we won. It’s not about how much time it takes. It’s about getting into Ava and Bob’s minds to figure out what they are wanting you to see, either from what’s in front of you or hidden in their skillfully writ-ten clues. So, once again thank you, Bob and Ava, for the fun and challenging day…we look forward to the next one.

Author with NOR member & driver, David Owen receive their first place prizes and trophy.

Finance: Monthly statements generally arrive on or about the date of our monthly meetings. For the annual meeting, we will have accurate figures through September with estimates through the end of 2012.

Social Events: Party at Mike Garriga’s house had about 120 attendees and everyone seemed to have a good time. Holiday party will be at the Botanical Gardens on Dec 15. Discussed using Eventbrite.com for RSVP and payment for events. There is some cost for using the service, but would be a good option for many club members.

Driving Events: Autocross - August event had 21 participants. Last event of year to be held September 23rd.Driver’s Ed: Fall Mid-Ohio event is filling up nicely with 103 participants (about 40 ahead of last year) – should “sell out” be-fore event date. Just received notice from PCA about revision to factory roll protec-tion. Essentially, a factory rollbar will be al-lowed without a “broomstick test” as long as the system isn’t modified. Aftermarket rollbars still must pass “broomstick test”.Rallye: 21 vehicles (42 participants) at recent rallye deemed a success – will do similar event again next year.

Concours: German Autofest at Donneschwaben was held on September 9th on the parking lot surface due to rain. A ‘mostly Porsche’ turnout. Only 1 Audi. Must find a way to promote with other German car clubs.

Rib Burn-Off & Social photos by ava Singerman

This tasty event hosted by NOR’s Tech & Safety director, Mike Garriga brought together members, ribs and over 75 Porsches which graced this Independence, OH front lawn on a beautiful August evening. The event also enjoyed some non-Pcars that showed their own unique stylings.

Ribs (cooked & brought by club members), pulled pork, corn-on-the-cob, freshly cut & sweet potato fries and a myriad of salads, deserts and other specialties of our NOR kitchens were abun-dant as over 100 people dined in this park-like set-ting of Mike’s back-yard.

  • October 2012 19

Refreshments flowed from bottles, kegs and cans while cooks crafted their specialty ribs and time was spent inspecting each others Porsches. A name-tag, announcement free evening led to much socializing and introductions of old members to new while the sounds of laughter & conversation filled the air. Smoke wafted as the smells of BBQ mingled with new-mown grass. Social chairs, Diane & Jim Forcina were proud of the hosting skills of Mike Garriga as they took a moment to pose behind slabs of ribs on one of the many cookers.

As the evening turned to night, the glowing coals lit the way back to our cars and the glow of the evning stayed with us on our drives home after another wonderful NOR social..

New Member Impression of Nor’s German Auto Fest by Bob Maurer

I can’t seem to remember where I left my cup of coffee twenty min-utes ago, but I clearly remember a certain day 47 years ago when a sil-ver 356 slipped through my fingers, all because I was $780 shy of the owner’s asking price of $800. Eight hundred dollars! So that is why I go to car shows today; to drool over vintage Porsches.

As new members attending our first NOR event, my partner Cindee Herderick and I met some really nice people. Cindee fell in love with Bill Hamzah’s orange 911. We had a nice visit as he talked about plans for his ever-evolving P-car.

Keith Inniss was such a wealth of information about the club, the events and its members, and intro-duced us to Les Checel. When Les mentioned he was the past “Voices” editor, I missed a perfect opportu-nity to keep my mouth shut. In-stead, I told him that in the good ol’ days I had been editor for our sports car club. So let’s blame Les for this “new member impression” of the show.

It was great having a good mix of cars to look at, including my new love, Boxsters. I still can’t remem-ber where I left my cup of coffee this morning, but I remember my first look at a Boxster on the street fifteen years ago. It was the tail-pipe that grabbed me. Now I own a silver, 1997 Boxster and know that she is much more than just a pret-ty tailpipe. It’s body styling takes me back to James Dean’s Spyder, Speedsters and the silver 356 that

    got away. Eight hundred dollars!!

One reason I like car shows is the trip through memories of some of the 39 and one third cars I have owned. (One-third interest in a dirt track stock car that never made it to the track.) About 20% of my cars have been VWs, so I always enjoy seeing them at shows.

The variety was good, including a couple of vintage motorcycles. For over 25 years I rode a BMW R-60 (What is it with me and boxer en-gines?), so I like seeing old bikes too. Except that as a pacifist, I find it hard to put history aside when looking at military vehicles—from either side of a conflict. I admired the thoroughness of the military collections and the quality of the two WWII motorcycles, but still, I didn’t like standing too close to that part of history, and the ma-chine those machines represented.

Cindee and I enjoyed our day at the show, especially meeting some of the active members who help make NOR the high quality club that it is. We like the charity aspect of NOR and we are looking forward to many events; rallying, P2O, oth-er driving events and gatherings. Wine tastings are a good thing.

We left the show before awards were announced, but awards aren’t as important as members just showing up with a car in the show. But before we left we enjoyed some brat and sauerkraut. What’s a day with German cars without some kraut and beer?

After doing this months’ schedule of regional activities around the Zone, I believe the operative words are “Fall Color Tour”! If there is not one listed in your area, it is either an oversight on my part, or it will actually be an ‘impromptu’ drive organized on short notice (which is usually just as much fun). So, plan to make that one last cruise in the Porsche before the leaves (and snow) fall and the car is packed away until spring. Check your local region’s website and newsletter for the latest details on the many events close to you that are being planned for your enjoyment, and check the Zone 4 Website at http://zone4.pca.org/ for other regions events, such as:• Check out a local Cars & Coffee event!!! They occur on a regular basis throughout the country on weekend morn-ings. No reservations or commitment required- just clean up the car and drive it over. The following regions are planning to participate: o Maumee Valley Region- October 14th at 9:30 AM, Tim Horton’s on Central Ave o Northern Ohio Region- at the Starbucks-City View, in Garfield Heights, OH at 8:30 AM- 10:30 AM, Oct. 6th and Oct. 20th. o Other regions check the local websites for details and schedules.• A great introduction to driving your Porsche in a fun and competitive manner can be found in Autocrossing (AX). Many regions sponsor Autocross events, and they are a great event for novices and experienced drivers alike. Check out the following event: o Allegheny Region hosts the last IRAC of the season (IRAC VII) and the final Awards Ban- quet on October 20th at Consol Energy Park in Washington, PA. Registration is at Motor sportsreg.com.• The Ohio Valley Region will participant in “Rallye Mariemont” on October 7th in Mariemont (Cincinnati) OH. A casual Porsche and community gathering will include family fun, German beer tasting and historic and specialty car displays. Stops will include the Fenn Valley Winery and then dinner in Holland MI. Contact Jim & Ardis Schaaf at [email protected] or Len & Bonnie Gawron at [email protected] for additional information and reservations. • Join Rally Sport Region for their annual Fall Color Tour “The Bridges of Ingham County” on October 13th. The drive will begin in Brighton, MI at 1:00 PM and end in Pinckney, MI for dinner. Starting point is in Nashville, IN at 9:30 AM. Contact Larry Haskett at [email protected]. See their website for more details and registration information.• Don’t forget to join the Maumee Valley Region for their 40th Anniversary Celebration on October 26-28th in To-ledo, OH. A great weekend of activities is planned starting Friday evening and running through Sunday afternoon. See their website for details and registration information.

Making the Dream of a DAYTONA Drivers School a REALITY--Audi Club event @Daytona International Speedway December 7th-9th, 2012

When Skip asked me to put together a little article about the Daytona Driver’s School for the PCA newsletter, I tried to decide what aspects of the event to highlight. In thinking about everything, I realized how many interesting stories and details there were to share. The “who” aspect, along with the “how’s” came to mind. However, the more I thought about it, the more I believed that starting at the beginning, with the “whys”, might be best.

Why Daytona? Why put on an event at a track that is 1500 miles away? A venue that costs 3 times the amount of the next highest priced track to rent? Why? The “why” starts about 30 years ago, when I was young and totally Porsche crazy. I crewed for a team that was going to race in the 24 hours of Daytona. The drivers were Fred Baker, Phil Byrd, and another driver who’s name escapes my recollection. Fred brought the crew, and a wealth of driving/technical experience. Phil provided the car, and I believe the other driver brought his checkbook...........(Editor’s note: Read the rest of this fascinating story in the November “Voices from the Trunk”. Below is some information on the event.)

Well, the driving season is starting to slow and I finally made it to our local “Cars and Coffee”; a fun gathering of exotic cars and their owners in the parking lot of the Garfield Hts Star-bucks. Over 30 local cars including the largest number of Porsches this event has seen so far as well as Lam-borghini, Maserati, Ferrari, Fisker, Audi, BMW, Mercedes, several Amer-ican-branded cars and more made September 1st a great morning. We hope to make it to another before they end on October 20th. Check page 4 for details.

As I’ve mentioned before, Bob & I are involved in several car clubs and in early September we trotted out a ‘71 Triumph TR6 and headed north to Niagara Falls, Canada for the 6Pack TRials. A gathering of 80+ TR6s & TR250s drove the roadways around Horseshoe Falls and tasted Ontario’s wines during a wonderful 4-day trip which saw our local club bring home 6 trophies including three 1st places and a Best of Show! We switched gears quickly as the next day we were at our monthly Porsche Club meeting helping to plan the rest of the events for 2012.

One of those events was a club fa-vorite! Saturday, September 15th, 130 NOR members and families gathered at Marshall Goldman Mot-ers for the (mostly) annual BBQ &

Winetasting. This year, the food quality and variety surpassed ex-pectations and Bill Polechak’s wine choices proved to be superb! Din-ing and conversing among MGM’s vast array of premier automobiles is always a fun way to spend an eve-ning and, with Make A Wish as a benefactor of a well-done raffle by our charity chairs, June and Karen (with help by their spouses, Mark & Tom), it was truly a special event!!!

With a Jaguar club Rallye to plan, a Triumph club tour to route, the fi-nal NOR autocross of this season to attend and planning the space requirements of the October Voices for all the events occuring yet in September (read DE), I’m hoping to have a moment to enjoy the cooler temps as we segue into autumn in Northeast Ohio. Enjoy the brisk fall....we all know what comes next!!
