Principal’s
Message
This week is Central Schools Lawn Bowls on
Monday. On Tuesday, the Secondary Reward
Excursion leaves for Penrith and Friday
unfortunately, is the end of term. As the Trundle
community is aware, I suffer from situationally
induced depression during the term break and as a
result often require counselling at coastal or large
urban locations. This term break I will be doing my
best to ride through the dark times caused by the
absence of students and the numerous
administration tasks I am blessed to be able to
perform each day of term. I am sure with adequate
hydration and regular exercise I will ride over the
dumps and return to work enthusiastic and
dedicated to public education.
On Thursday, I accompanied our Trundle /
Tullamore combined Opens and Under 14 Rugby
League teams. Both teams came second in all their
individual games. I was incredibly proud with the
behaviour and spirit of the boys from both schools.
I love the game of Rugby league because I believe
the contest instils character in young people and
the team atmosphere teaches group responsibility
in the individualised world our children are born
into. However, I was disappointed with Country
Rugby League referees for not reducing the
physical impact of some tackles on our students
who were experiencing the game for the first time.
These carnivals are supposed to promote the
game, not expose inexperienced players to
possible injury. I will be seriously considering not
attending this carnival next year, if my students are not better protected.
Last week was stressful but incredibly rewarding.
On Tuesday, Kiama Concert Band visited. These
talented students diverted off their usual schedule
to share the joy of music. I have made no secret of
the fact I consider music and the other creative
arts just as important as Science, English and
Mathematics in this school. If this visit inspires one
student to play a musical instrument, it will be time
well spent by the members of the band.
Some people asked why the visit of the band was
not advertised. It was mentioned several times in
the newsletter for our family’s information. The
concert was never intended to be open to the
public. The reasons are simple; the time of the
performance was not set in concrete due to travel
considerations and a public performance requires a
risk assessment to be completed for public liability
and child protection purposes. I was not prepared
to complete this process for a 40 minute concert
with no definite start and finish time. In addition, I
have invited other schools in the past only to come
to the painful realisation, the flow of goodwill was
only one way.
In addition, last week we had a visit from the Daily
Telegraph newspaper and 16 students from
Lansvale Public School and St Joseph’s Catholic
Primary School in Warrnambool. These students
won the ‘Adopt a Farmer’ competition
coordinated by the Daily Telegraph.
I would like to publically thank Andrew
Rawsthorne for his contribution on this day and
the remarkable on-going support of this school and
town. Andrew has been an enormous source of
advice and help over the five years I have been Principal. He never loses sight of the big picture of
improving this town even when projects are
moving slower than expected, funding is difficult or
he receives criticism by the minority that never
contribute but critique those that can and do. This
town is better because of Andrew as he does not
have a personal agenda and everything he does is
for the community, not for his personal financial
gain. Indeed, I would believe his efforts around
town actually cost him money.
The Telegraph is coordinating a Rural Summit in
Dubbo which will involve the Prime Minister,
Opposition Leader and several other leaders of the
private and public sector. I hope it also includes
people who are actually on the ground and
experiencing the issues related to rural decline.
For this summit to actually have traction, the
politics and blame game needs to be placed aside
and the people who are most affected contribute
to generating the workable solutions. For example,
a few years ago I was chairperson of the Riverina
Youth Hostels Association. This group based in
Albury provides short crisis accommodation to
young people who have no other alternative.
The most positive traction we ever gained as a
board was when we invited the residents to work

on the solutions, not when we implemented a top
down paternalistic approach. How could we
possibly understand the issues associated with
homelessness when we came from a world of
privilege? I believe this is the same with the rural
summit. How could politicians understand
completely the entrenched disadvantage beyond
the sandstone curtain when they fly back to the
relative advantage of the city?
Rural decline and therefore reduction in school
populations is not caused only by drought, there is
a multitude of factors. These are both local,
national and international. Consider the decline in
this town over the years from 1984 to 2019. Some
may have different recollections of what was
available in 1984 (consult street map) compared to
now but the issue is clear. Country people are not
able to access the degree of services that are taken
for granted in larger centres despite generating
considerable wealth for this country. This is a
situation I find disgraceful and in urgent need of
review. I also believe, it will only change when we
proactively ask /demand it to change, not sit back
and accept it as part of rural life.
Many of our buildings have been re-purposed but
the level of employment is not currently in our
community. In 1984, I believe, there were up to 20
shearers actively working and living in the Trundle
district. During its high production time, the
Sawmill employed 27 people. Coupled with this
were government jobs in Telecom, Railway and
Essential Energy. These jobs have gone because of
the government’s change in focus from providing
social capital to balancing budgets. The collateral
damage are rural families, especially opportunity
for children.
I often wonder why rural people are so compliant.
When we lost the Essential Energy depot, some
good people tried to argue to retain the depot but
most people just accepted it as part of living in the
country. Rural decline has been occurring for many
years and the political and social pressure placed
upon decision makers has been minimal. Imagine, if a power company closed infrastructure in Sydney
and people were subject to regular power failures
such as many farms in the district. The pressure
placed upon the company and government would
be enormous.
I understand many factors are outside our control.
However, there must be a way we can evolve in
the country, not dissolve. A few suggestions could
be:
Relief from fees and red tape associated with
building in country towns. The new teacher
housing was significantly delayed by the need
for a flood survey to be undertaken even
though numerous long term locals told me it
has never flooded on that block.
Taxation relief for businesses willing to
establish and continue to operate in country
towns.
Tourism campaigns for people to divert off
the highway and spend money in our
businesses.
Differential taxation for people working in country towns. In simple terms, you pay less
if you work /live in the country, generating
wealth.
These things may not be possible but they are a
start to the debate.
Last week, I received word that our application for
a Variety Club bus has progressed to the final
stage. If successful this would be a 24 seat new bus
for half the new cost. This would mean the school
has 12 months to raise $70,000 a figure that would
be difficult, but certainly not beyond us with a
united effort.
This year, each teacher received $1000 additional
money for innovation. The idea was to move the
town educationally and socially closer to the
facilities available in larger centres. I am always
very proud of my staff, as they go beyond their job
descriptions to provide for your children.
Examples of the additional experiences available
through the innovation funding are:
Virtual reality excursions in Science and
History.
Visits from a professional Dance teacher.
Artist in residence at the school.
Outdoor activity mats for the playground.
Visits and workshops from professional
entertainers.
Visit and workshops from Eddie Woo,
famous Mathematics teacher.
This is just a small sample of what will be
happening at your local public school next term,
additional to our already outstanding programs
and facilities.
Happiest man in Trundle.

Major Excursion Our major excursion for this year is a
fabulously fun filled trip to Canberra on the
13th/14th/15th November. The students have the
opportunity to experience a great three day trip
away to go to Questacon, Parliament House, The
War Memorial, Telstra Tower and many other
landmarks. The experience is one that they will
always remember, especially the opportunity to
travel away with friends.
Notes were handed out last week
and the deposit is due by
Wednesday.
If there are any questions or concerns, please do
not hesitate to call Mrs Sanderson at school.
PSSA Netball Knockout The netball team played Parkes Public School in
round 4 of the PSSA Netball Knockout competition last Monday 24th June. Unfortunately the team were
defeated by Parkes Public School. The team played
exceptionally well and should be congratulated on
making it to the fourth round.
Assembly Last Friday our end of term assembly was a great
success. There were many parents, grandparents
and friends in attendance. Thank you for coming to
watch the students showcase their skills!
Corrective Reading Lunch Those students who participate in our Corrective Reading program will be
having an end of term lunch. Those
students involved do not need to bring
their lunch on Thursday 4th July.
Hats Although Terms 2 and 3 are not part of our NO
HAT NO PLAY policy, we are recommending that
the students bring a hat on sport days and P.E. days
to reduce any risks of sunburn and windburn.

Secondary
Firstly I would like to congratulate all of our
students on a very positive and successful Term 2
and Semester 1! Every student in our Secondary
department has grown in some way and overall the
academic reports for our students are very
positive. Our reward levels have shown that all of
our students are capable of positive behaviour and
this is exhibited for the majority of the time at
school.
A further congratulations is extended to those who
made it to the top of the welfare levels and have
been invited on the Reward trip. This should be an
awesome couple of days with some unique
experiences planned for our students. Thank you to Miss Rowlands for her organisation and to Mrs
Budd and Mrs Morgan for agreeing to supervise.
Year 11 and 12, as mentioned last week are
heading onto their final term of study for each of
their courses. For Year 12 it is the final term of
their schooling forever. Hopefully all of Stage 6 will
take the reprieve from lessons to actually revise
and prepare for their exams. Year 11’s will be at
the end of Term 3 while Year 12 have their trials in
Week 5 & 6 and then their HSC Examinations
commencing in October [Thursday 14th to be
exact].
Next term is also a Big Gig term! Mrs Gray and
Mrs Sanderson have been busy organising this and
as always it should be fantastic! Letters will be
going home this week and rehearsals start first
week back next term. Action and break a leg!
As always if there are any questions in regards to
secondary matters please contact me at school.
Have a great and refreshing break. Looking forward
to seeing all our students relaxed and raring to go
for Term 3!
Have a great week
