All too often we take for granted that the individual sitting next to us for 90 minutes each week is more than just another Rotarian, they are a professional, have a family, and a unique individual personality that makes them wonderful. Part 2 of this article explores the Professional side of Mrs. Toni V. Toni began her career in 1978 as a licensed Dental Assistant. By 1980 she decided to change careers; and, was hired at a small Mom-and-Pop drugstore, where she worked for the next 27 years! From her humble beginnings as a pharmacy clerk/typist in 1980 to the Certified Pharmacy Technician and Credentialed MT [Medical Transcriptionist] in 1996, Toni has continued to strive for nothing short of excellence. In December 2007, Toni purchased her own pharmacy and began a new chapter in her life. Toni has built a reputation for providing the local community with unparalleled service to her clients. 30-year West Covina Resident, Jerry Masson [pictured below with Toni] credits his long-term residency in part due to the service he receives from Toni and her staff. He first met Toni 30 years ago when she was at the drugstore and has followed her ever since. When asked “Why”?, he simply stated: “She provides great service, reminds me of what I need to take, and has everything waiting for me when I come into the pharmacyif I forget – Toni will always remembershe makes me feel safe.” He is right. From the moment I walked in the door I was greeted with warm smiles and a genuine desire to serve. Awarded Technician of the Year in 2010 by CPhA, Toni’s accomplishments are too numerous to mention in this article. Guide Dogs for the Blind

If you're in search of a heartwarming tale with a happy ending, a story about the good things that kids are doing these days, an inspiring tale of a person with a disability, or a professional expert to give opinions and advice on everything from veterinary care to estate planning, then Guide Dogs for the Blind is your go-to resource.

"But he who has once given himself to dreaming is not

easily satisfied."

Paul Harris

DID YOU KNOW?

With the aging of the population, the number of Americans with major eye diseases is increasing, and vision loss is becoming a major public health problem. By the year 2020, the number of people who are blind or have low vision is projected to increase substantially. --National Institutes of Health (NIH)

From the Top Down

Kalyan Banerjee, RI President says: “We are the doers of our communities, the leaders, the ones who are most involved, who see the problems and have the means to find the solutions,” Banerjee said. “I am asking you to reach within and unleash your inner power and then use it to embrace everything and everyone around you.” Reach Within to Embrace Humanity .

District 5300 Governor, Doug Fowler will support Banerjee by (a) enhancing public image and awareness, (b) Improving lives in our communities through the partnering of clubs, and (c) Embracing humanity through projects like the wheelchair project. Stay tuned for more from our DG

Our job is to demonstrate the ideals of Rotary International by “providing humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards, in all vocations and help build goodwill and peace in the world”. This year we will do that by having F.U.N. – “Filling Unfulfilled Needs”

Recently, the West Covina Noon Rotary Club had the pleasure of meeting Tuscan, a guide dog in training. Guide Dogs for the Blind was incorporated in May of 1942 and began instruction of students in a rented home in Los Gatos, California, south of San Jose. A German Shepherd named "Blondie" was one of the first dogs trained. "Blondie" had been rescued from a Pasadena dog pound. She was later paired with Sgt. Leonard Foulk, the first serviceman to graduate from the new school. Since that beginning more than 60 years ago, they have graduated more than 10,000 Guide Dog teams. The cost from birth to the delivery to a blind individual is $15,000.00 with the lifetime costs as much as $60,000.00. Guide dogs are generally in service from 2-10 years, and will often let their owner know when it is time to separate. For more information visit www.guidedogs.com.

The Expected and Unexpected By: Dwight Gimenez, Financial Advisor

To enjoy a comfortable retirement lifestyle, you’ll need to have adequate financial resources in place. And that means you must plan for the expected — but prepare for the unexpected. In planning for the “expected” aspects of your retirement, consider these factors:

Your vision of your retirement lifestyle — What do you want to do during your retirement years? Your expectations of your retirement lifestyle will dictate, to a large extent, your savings and investment strategies.

Your expenses — Once you’ve established a vision for your retirement lifestyle, you can begin to estimate the expenses you expect to incur during your retirement years.

Your income — You can expect to receive income from a variety of sources: Social Security, pensions, part-time employment and investments, such as your IRA, 401(k) and any taxable investment accounts you may have. You’ll need to estimate about how much income all these sources can provide.

Your withdrawal rate — If your investments are going to provide a significant part of your retirement income, you need to carefully manage annual withdrawals from your portfolio. Your withdrawal rate is key in helping to ensure your portfolio provides for your needs as long as you need it.

Your portfolio reliance rate — how much you rely on your portfolio to provide income. For instance, if you will need $50,000 per year in retirement, and $30,000 will come from your portfolio, your reliance rate will be 60% ($30,000 divided by $50,000). Your reliance rate will help determine how sensitive your strategy might be to outside events, such as market fluctuations.

While you need to be familiar with these expected elements of your retirement, you also must be prepared for the unexpected aspects:

Living longer than you expect — How long you can expect to live is somewhat of a mystery. If you were to live longer than you anticipate, would you be financially prepared?

Inflation — At an average inflation rate of three percent, your cost of living will double in about 24 years. That’s why, even in retirement, you will need some growth-oriented investments, such as quality stocks to ensure you can maintain your desired retirement lifestyle.

Health care — Even after you’re on Medicare, which won’t cover everything, you need to prepare for the

unexpected, such as a lengthy illness or the need for some type of long-term care. You may also wish to “self-insure” to a certain extent by setting aside funds in a liquid, stable account.

By positioning your investment portfolio for both the expected and the unexpected, you can go a long way toward enjoying the retirement lifestyle you seek. So plan ahead — and make the necessary adjustments as time goes by.

Traveling the Globe...

GLOBE-TROTTING

TWINS spotted by

paparazzi in Europe. Meet Katie and Denise Alfaro [age 22], twin daughters of Dr. David Alfaro. The Trumpet paparazzi were elated to hear that the twins took over 1300 pictures of their trip abroad. While visiting Europe, the girls were able to take in the sites in London, Paris, Madrid, Barcelona, San Sebastian, Florence, Rome, and Germany.

They have returned home safely with tales to tell, and memories that will last a lifetime. Welcome home girls!

This week we travel to

Chicago A modern Chicago grand hotel, the Palmer House is a lively destination within walking distance of the best attractions the city of Chicago has to offer like Millennium Park, Grant Park, Lake Michigan, the Art Institute of Chicago, the theater district, and the Magnificent Mile. If you need more try the Hilton Chicago the, landmark downtown pet friendly property located on the "Cultural Michigan Avenue Mile" overlooking Grant Park and Lake Michigan, Millennium Park and Museum Campus. The jewel of America's heartland, Chicago blends the style and sophistication of the country's biggest cities with the friendliness of the hard-working Midwest. Architect Frank Gehry and Spanish sculptor Jaume Plensa have made the downtown Millennium Park an eye-catcher with public art -- the graceful curves of its fluid, metallic sculptures contrasting sharply with the rectangular office towers in the distance. Just steps away lie the shores of Lake Michigan where families have soaked up the sun and tycoons have yachted for generations. If this doesn’t suit your fancy, be sure to ask for travel advice from our resident travel expert, Frank Morgan [also known as the evil Fine Master] Oops, did I say “evil”? I mean the wonderful, eternally young and charming Frank Morgan.

Deep Blue Sea

Millions of people step onto a cruise ship each year and leave the real world behind. The law of the land seems not to apply in this floating city of swim-up bars, slot machines, and exotic ports of call.

This is great news for local Rotarians, Joe Secard and Frank Pasqualetto, who have taken over 50 cruises and recently just came back from another adventure on the high seas!

Aside from the distant possibility of an onboard fire, hitting an iceberg or getting raided by pirates, this dynamic duo enjoy the comraderie, mingling and relaxation a cruise ship offers.

Perhaps a Rotary Cruise is something the club could coordinate as a fellowship event? What say ye?

Trivia Question: What movie does this famous quote on the high seas come from? “Einstein's theory of relativity: Grab hold of a hot pan, a second can seem like an hour. Put your hands on a hot woman, an hour can seem like a second. It's all relative”

Hassle Free Airport Security Screening Tips.

Do you really know what Rotary is all about? Now, when you’ve gotten to think you know all about Rotary.think again. Unless you’ve been to a Rotary International Convention, you have missed one of the greatest experiences in the Rotary world. The convention is an annual affair, taking place each June in some major city around the world.

The 2011 convention was held in New Orleans. Seasoned Rotarian, Ken Lund and wife, Rudie, were pleased to attend, along with over 20,000 other Rotarians, their partners and families. “There’s a lot to see and do, and a lot you get out of it. I’m going to give a “PowerPoint” talk about the experience at next week’s meeting on Wednesday, July 27, and hope you can be there! You’ll see photos and videos. But, most importantly, you will learn the four key things that make it so worthwhile to be at the convention.” Will the Real Toni V. please
