There is a Haitian proverb that says, “You must have patience to raise the sun.” For Haitians that means, a challenging job takes time and patience. This is a truth well understood by the women (and men) in Haiti, the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, who have designed and created extraordinary quilts. A selection of these quilts will be on view in “Patience to Raise the Sun: Art Quilts from Haiti” an unprecedented exhibition organized by Bennington Museum and PeaceQuilts, a humanitarian organization relieving poverty in Haiti by establishing and supporting women’s quilting ateliers. This exhibit will be on view at the Bennington Museum from September 5 through November 8.

This remarkable collection of original quilts offers a rare glimpse into the fascinating and rich culture of Haiti, a country plagued by poverty, social and political morass, and the effects from last year’s

Community Choral Society

The Community Choral Society, under the directorship of Matt Edwards, is beginning its 56th year this September. The choral is made up of vocal-ists from the surrounding areas and no auditions are necessary. Rehearsals will begin on Sunday, September 13, at 6:30 p.m. at the Cambridge United Presbyterian Church with performances the first and second Sundays in December. Included in the exhibition are mounted photo enlargements of the quilters and their envi-rons, a video containing on-site interviews, examples of objects utilized by the quilters such as a charcoal iron used in the absence of electricity, and embroidery sampler.

The first model quilt-mak-ing cooperative, Artisanat Patchwork de Paix (or Peacequilts Cooperative in English), is locat-ed in Lilavois, Haiti, just outside the capital of Port-au-Prince. Here, women from the commu-nity are producing one-of-a-kind art quilts informed by Haitian imagery. They earn a daily wage plus a portion of the sale price when their quilts sell. Each coop-erative will eventually become fully independent, owned and run by its members.

Jeanne Staples is founder and director of PeaceQuilts, an outgrowth of Martha’s Vineyard Fish Farm for Haiti Project which has been provid-ing relief to the poor of Haiti since 1998. Maureen Matthews McClintock, a Bennington resident, serves as PeaceQuilts’ Quilting Coordinator. Under Maureen’s direction, members of PeaceQuilts cooperatives have received intensive train-ing. Having taken countless trips to Haiti, McClintock has been involved in formulating and directing all facets of the project, and serves on the board.

Jamie Franklin, Curator of Collections will give a gallery talk on the exhibit. Ticket price is $28 with a portion of it returning to the quilters of Haiti through PeaceQuilts. Beatrix Potter RevisitedThe Shaftsbury Historical Society will host Beatrix Potter Revisited,

sponsored by the Vermont Humanities Council on Friday August 21 at 7 p.m. at the Shaftsbury Methodist Church. This is free and open to the public and accessible to people with disabilities.

Helene Lang presents the life of Beatrix Potter, using books, props and bibliography, highlighting her artistic talent, writing ability and years as a country woman raising Herdwick sheep. Children and adults of all ages love Beatrix Potter stories and her drawings. Don’t miss this interesting story, told eloquently, of a well-known author and how she became such a special individual whose talent and craft has lived through the ages.

Main Street Stage’s RedroomOn Thursday, August 27, the Redroom, Main Street Stage’s popular

cabaret series will run in conjunction with Downstreet Art. After the galleries close at 8 p.m., make your way to 57 Main Street, North Adams, for an evening of mingling, sketching, performance and surprises.

Fresh off the run of Twelfth Night, the cast has written a series of sketches based on Shakespeare’s comedy, including a “Noises-off ” style skit that examines what can happen when a community theatre tries to cast a show that depends on having identical twins in crucial roles.

The show will also feature dance and music by Redroom cast mem-bers.

The Redroom is an artist’s playground where genre lines don’t matter. One audience member called it something you’d see in someone’s basement in Greenwich Village during the 1960’s. From 8-9 p.m., enjoy a glass of wine, mingle with the cast and other guests while a live model poses in the window. Bring your own art supplies or use the ones we provide. At 9 p.m., the vari-ety show begins, full of readings, original skits and plays, improvi-sational rap, dance, local musicians and anything else we can get our hands on.

Career Readiness Certificate Program Orientation Sessions

If you are interested in gaining a competitive edge in today’s job market and improving your workplace skills, the Career Readiness Certificate program may provide the perfect opportunity for you. The course meets for ten weeks at the Community College of Vermont in Bennington on Tuesday and Thursdays from 2-5 p.m. begin-ning October 6. The program is jointly sponsored by the Vermont Department of Labor and the Community College of Vermont.

Participants engage in an extensive assessment process to identify individual strengths and weaknesses and then focus specifically on skill areas needing improvement. To get started, plan to attend any one of the upcoming one hour orientation sessions at the Vermont Department of Labor, 150 Memorial Drive, Suite 2, in Bennington. AARP Driver Safety ProgramOn September 21st the Bennington Senior Center will be hosting

an AARP Driver Safety Program class. The course will help drivers identify the most cimmon crash situations faced behind the wheel. If you hve been taught that your hands on the steering wheel should be at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., learn why this is now dangerous, and exactly where your hands should be placed. In addition, get a better understanding of today’s roads, vehicles and other road users. From my Corner...very disturbing...

— by Susan J. CoonsA couple of weeks ago a woman

stood up at a Town Hall meet-ing and screamed, cried and waved her arms around, shouting that she wants her country back. She and dozens of others shouted, yelled, shoved their fists in the air, and wouldn’t allow the speaker his right to free speech. Do they like what they see when they go home and watch themselves on television? Do they admire the anger, violence and hatred they have exhibited? Are they proud of themselves? Is that what they want their children and grandchildren to see? I want my country back when I see this kind of behavior. It’s anarchy.

Just this past week someone was restrained from entering a Town Hall meeting because he was carrying a knife and loaded gun. Another man was seen picketing outside a Town Hall meeting with a loaded gun in his holster. Was the gun for intimidation? What are they so afraid of? Or are they so arrogant that they think they can attend a meeting with a loaded gun? Do they have such deep hatred or fear of their fellow Americans or the government that they rely on the threat of a gun to express their point of view? Yes, I want my country back!

How sad it is that so many elderly people are easily swayed by mis-leading (and often hateful) information spewed forth on radio and television talk shows. The Internet is a wonderful instrument for com-munication and information. It is also a place where misinformation, fear, and hatred are leading the discussions regarding health care. Lies are passed off as truths. For example, the government isn’t going to euthanize Aunt Millie just because they offer to have a doctor or patient advocate explain a living will, or a “do not resuscitate” order. The doctor or case worker is merely explaining the options one has. Decisions are left to the patient. Recall, for a moment, about how some members of congress, who are now against the health care initiative, stating that the government will interfere with your health decisions, were only too eager to interfere with Terry Schaivo and her husband, in the name of God, country and pro-life, insisting that her desire to not be kept on life support be reversed. Hypocritical.

I believe in everyone’s right to protest. I’ve marched for equal rights for women in Washington, D.C. I’ve done my fair share of protesting by boycotting things like lettuce, grapes, and Nestle products. None of these actions were violent. None of them required me to be in someone’s face. I didn’t have to shout anyone down. Didn’t have to intimidate any-one with a gun.

Yelling at the top of your lungs; screaming and waving your arms around; pushing, pointing fingers; shoving fists in the air...really, really the picture of an ugly American. Shame on all of you who know bet-ter and still behave badly, and shame on all of you who condone and encourage this kind of behavior.

Quilt to Celebrate 250th AnniversaryOn January 8 2010, Pownal will celebrate its 250th Anniversary.

Meditation and Creative Journaling for Stress Reduction

The Bennington Project Independence Adult Day Service presents Beginning Meditation and Creative Journaling Techniques for Stress Reduction with Beth Newman, LMFT, ATR-BC on Tuesday, August 25 at 2 p.m. No art or meditation experience is needed.

In this introductory gathering, we will learn healthy aging tools. Beginning mediation techniques will be introduced, as well as creative journaling ideas. Creative journaling is a way to explore feelings and experiences, as well as concerns regarding health and aging in a fun and accessible way.

Stephentown BarbecueEnjoy a special birthday feast on Sunday, September 13, when the

Stephentown Historical Society sponsors a Giffy’s Bar-B-Q chicken dinner at the Fire Hall in Stephentown, New York. The dinner celebrates 2009 as the 225th anniversary of the town’s charter and is held in con-junction with the Stephentown Volunteer Fire Department Muster and Parade. Giffy’s will be serving dinners from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. which conveniently follows the 11 a.m. parade. The firemen’s muster competition begins at 1 p.m.

The dinners are $9 and include Giffy’s award-winning barbecued half chicken, baked potato, coleslaw, roll with butter, cookie and bever-age, Kinderhook Creek Farm corn on the cob, and homemade desserts. Takeout meals will be available. The Fire Hall is on Grange Hall Road and is handicapped accessible. Bennington County Beekeepers Meeting

The Bennington County Beekeepers Club, Ltd., announces their August 20 meeting to be held in the Crispe Room, Vermont Veterans Home, Route 7, Bennington, Vermont, across from Tractor Supply and Depot Street. Invasive Species Control ProjectThe Londonderry Conservation Commission is sponsoring an

invasive species control project on the Town of Londonderry Prouty property in Londonderry on Saturday, September 12.

Long View Forest Contracting, Inc. in conjunction with the Vermont Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation will provide the materials and expertise. This project is a follow-up on last summer’s invasive spe-cies identification workshop where The Nature Conservancy presented its “Wise on Weeds!” program. This year the focus is on the elimination of invasive plants on the Town of Londonderry Prouty lands through selective herbicide application and manual pulling.

This event is open to all interested persons who would either like to help out or would like to learn more about invasive plants and eradica-tion methods for their own properties. We will meet the morning of

Saturday, September 12, at 8:30 a.m., at the South Londonderry Town Offices (School Street, South Londonderry).

This will be a whole-day event so pack a lunch if you want to stay the day, along with appropri-ate outdoor gear and footwear. If it is raining or looks like rain that weekend, we have sched-uled a raindate for Wednesday, September 16 at the same time and meeting place.

Several excit-ing competitions will be featured dur-ing the first Hoosick Pumpkinpalooza, set for the weekend of September 26, 2009 in the Village of Hoosick Falls. This family-friendly community event is a pride and tra-dition initiative orga-nized by the Hoosick Area Partnership for Parents & Youth (HAPPY).

Headlining the fes-tival will be the area’s first Punkin’ Chunkin’ competition. This thrill-ing exposition of manmade machines will take place at the Town of Hoosick Athletic Fields on Main Street beginning at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 26. Teams are invited to build a non-motorized pumpkin hurling machine to enter in the contest. No propellants, com-pressed air, explosives or pyrotechnics can be used. Each machine will have six chances to hurl 3-8 lb. pumpkins at targets set up 100-150 ft., 150-200 ft., and 200-250 ft. away.

Teams can represent area high schools, colleges, and businesses, or

Area restaurants, clubs, families, friends, professional cooks and anyone who thinks their chili recipe is a winner, are welcome to enter the Hoosick Pumpkinpalooza Chili Cook-off. This event begins at 12 noon on September 26 at the Town Athletic Fields. Each entrant will bring four quarts of their special chili for sampling by the judges and the public. There is a small admission fee to sample the chili entries, and each sampler gets to cast a vote for the “crowd favorite” award. The event winner, selected by a panel of judges, will win a trophy and $100. Each entrant will be asked to provide their recipe prior to the competition to be included in the official festival cookbook, which will be available for sale during Pumpkinpalooza. To enter the chili cook-off, call 518-686-9050 to receive a registration form.

The Pumpkinpalooza 5K Race, sponsored by WCW, Inc., will begin and end at Wood Memorial Park at 9 a.m. on Saturday, September 26.

Following the 5K race, there will be a Kids’ Fun Run from Wood Park to the Town Athletic Fields. The run begins at 10 a.m. and should arrive at the town fields in time for the punkin’ chunkin’ competition. There is no fee to enter the fun run, and all finishers will receive a rib-bon.

Sustainable Living Series ContinuesSustainable Design of Vermont continues its free monthly

“Sustainable Living” series at the Northshire Bookstore this Thursday, August 20, at 7 p.m. This month learn the most effective way to identify where your home is losing heat and why reducing air leakage can lower your energy costs and increase your comfort.

The “Energy Audit” presentation by Hand Energy Services will cover all you need to know about your home’s efficiency report card and include a live infrared camera demonstration. Also, an “Air Sealing” talk by Energy Wise Homes will demonstrate the process of eliminating drafts and gaps in buildings, the products and techniques used, and the cost savings that can result.

These interactive sessions are geared toward increasing public awareness through hands-on demonstrations by local professionals in the “green” industry. Future monthly presentations will be held on the third Thursday of each month and cover different topics includ-ing insulations, solar, geo-thermal, home food production, sustainable landscapes, FSC wood, efficient architectural design and “green” build-ing techniques. Rainforests of the WorldOn Wednesday, August 26th from 1:30-2:30 p.m. at the Pember

Museum in Granville, New York, there will be a Rainforests of the World program which will feature a slide presentation, hands-on exploration and a live rainforest opossum. This is a free public program for children of all ages. No registration is necessary.
