Attempting to top last year’s turnout and contributions to the Vermont/New Hampshire Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, the Tubbs Romp to Stomp Out Breast Cancer Snowshoe Series® is anticipat-ing a stompin’ good time on January 30, 2010 on Stratton Mountain.

In the partnership with national sponsors such as Tubbs Snowshoes, Columbia Sportswear, and Green Mountain Coffee, the Romp to Stomp offers a fun, affordable, family-friendly way to beat the winter doldrums and get active with a 3k or 5k snowshoe walk or a 3k snowshoe race. Stratton Mountain Resort truly offers a unique snowshoe experience with its gorgeous course that leads Rompers through pleas-ant wooded trails where they are sure to enjoy the beauty and splendor of the season.

“The Romp to Stomp Out Breast Cancer is a fabu-

lous excuse to get outdoors in the middle of winter and raise money for a great cause at the same time,” said Alyson Ruby, captain of Romp to Stomp team P-Ruby and a past series top fundraiser. “I didn’t really know what to expect when I became involved with the event in 2004 as a person who was very new to the sport of snowshoeing and had only recently become a part of a family battling breast cancer. Over the past years as my family’s battle became bigger so did our team and our donations. It has

been, and will continue to be, an honor to be a part of this won-derful event.”

Along with the gorgeous win-ter walk or race, participants also take advantage of free goody bags, sweepstakes, a survivor tribute, and free snowshoe demos from Tubbs (while supplies last). Top team and top individual fundraisers, and top race finish-ers take home great prizes from sponsors.

...sight and hearing fund...The Bennington Lions Club is now conducting its annual solicita-

tion for our Sight and Hearing fund. Thanks to the response from this letter, other fundraisers during the year, and a very generous donation from the Bennington Club, we were able to assist our friends and neigh-bors with 63 pairs of eyeglasses, one eye exam, seven hearing aids, one hearing aid repair and the replacement of hearing devices at Oldcastle Theater at a total cost of $8,160.83 from July 1, 2008 through June 20, 2009.

Since July 1 of 2009 we have been able to assist people with 34 pairs of eyeglasses, two eye exams and one hearing aid with many more applica-tions to be processed. There are no salaries, rents or other overhead to deplete the funds collected. All donations are distributed in our local area of Bennington, Woodford and Pownal.

...full body scan...When I first started fly-

ing I was 18 and that flight was on a sea-plane. I love to fly. In the 1960s when I was flying from Los Angeles to Chicago, Miami, New York, Washington D.C. or the Bahamas, I carried a make-up overnight case, gar-ment bag, hair dryer, and Samsonite suitcase. All my luggage was checked except my garment bag, which I handed to the stewardess when I boarded the plane. Motion pictures on the 1930s, 40s, and 50s created a mystique and drama of flying. My husband always wore a suit, sometimes three-piece, and tie and I wore a dress, nylon stockings, heels, hat and gloves. Flying was a special and somewhat formal event. No jeans, shorts, or sneakers. We had drinks in the lounge while we waited to board the plane. Once boarded we sat in leather seats that were wide and comfortable with only two on each side of the aisle. The pull-down trays were larger, and when they were pulled down, there was still room to move around in your seat. (Of course, I was thinner then!) We were served magnificent meals that included dessert, and two drinks.

Flying was still fun in the 1970s. I took the kids along to the airport to see my husband off on business trips. They watched as the plane taxied down the runway and ascended into the sky.

By the time I flew to Albany from Los Angeles in 1983, the plane then sat three seats on each side of the aisle, the trays were smaller, and the distance from seat to seat front to back, was narrower. Pity the guy who had a window seat and had to use the lavatory. They still served a meal on cross-country flights, but it was meager.

Today the planes are not only cramped with many more seats per aisle, but there are no meals. You can’t bring your own beverage on board. We have to take off our shoes, pass everything through the scanners, sometimes we’re patted down after going through screening, we open our suitcases for investigation, and now we’re going to be exposed to a full body screen. Holy Cow!

There are so many ways to “look” at the prospect of “exposing” myself to a full body scan.

First, I will tell you that from viewing one naked body after another in an eight-hour stretch the scanner will surely be aghast at the sight and eager to punch out at the end of the day. I think if I had that job I would sit in the dark when I get home, and try to put the memory of what I’ve seen out of

my mind with a good, strong Rusty Nail. There are very few well-toned bodies in the world. Ninety-nine percent of us are out of shape with the natural sagging of age, the addition of pounds, surgeries, wrinkles, and the scars and scrapes of living.

Screening offers an unlimited supply of naked body jokes. Just sitting here, at the computer I can think of several which I won’t tell you. This is a family paper, after all! My son did say that next time he comes to visit, he’s going to wear his underwear on the outside.

I don’t know anyone my age who has a perfect body, man or woman. Shakespeare spoke of the old duffer wearing hose on shrunken shanks. Sagging socks.

Aging gracefully? Well, I guess so. My mind is still good. I have a good attitude about life. If I was young and lovely, I don’t think I would mind the full body scan except for the sake of modesty. Now it’s no longer only modesty that rules but extreme embarrassment.

Oh well. If they can stand it, so can I. I feel like I should buy the screener a drink or something for exposing her to such a catastrophic view.

Relief for HaitiansFor the next few weeks or so the TriState Pennysaver News and

Vermont News Guide are organizing an effort to gather and promote the donation of as much material goods and money for the earthquake victims in Haiti as possible. This is a good time for an early spring cleaning of your closets. Please please please help us out and donate as much as you can. The following is a basic list of material goods that will be helpful to the victims – if an item is not listed it does not mean it cannot be donated. Every little bit counts. We will be collecting your donated items at the TriState Pennysaver News office, 109 South Street, Bennington and at the Vermont News Guide office, 99 Bonnet Street, Manchester. We will transfer your collected donations to American Red Cross in Bennington, Vermont.

Items needed are: gauze; band aids; alcohol, peroxide and other topi-cal wound care ointments/medicines; feminine hygiene items; paper goods; toiletries; canned and non-perishable goods; summer clothing; linens including sheets blankets and towels; emergency kits and any-thing else you can afford to give will be welcome.

Other ways to donate:American Red Cross: Go to RedCross.org; hit donate now button at top and then International Response Fund. You also can text “Haiti” to 90999 to donate $10 to the International Response Fund. The money will go directly to relief efforts in Haiti. Phoning in a donation can also be made by calling 1-800-Red-Cross.

AmeriCares: Go to AmeriCares.org. Donations will go toward medi-cine and medical supplies and for expenses for providing that medical aid. You may also call 1-800-486-HELP.

United Way: Go to www.uwwesternct.org. Donations will go to the United Way Disaster Fund which will assist United Way efforts to address the educational, financial and health-related challenges that arise when disasters devastate communities.

Snowshoe Hike in Lenox, Massachusetts

Strap on your snowshoes on Saturday, January 30, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and join us for a strenuous hike to the snowy summit of Lenox Mountain (2,126 ft). This hike follows the Overbrook Trail three miles round-trip through northern hardwood forests for an elevation gain of 840 ft. We’ll track wildlife, identify trees by their bark, and finally take in a 50-mile view (a clear day) from the top. Bring your own snowshoes or use ours. Dress appropriately in synthetic or wool clothing, and in lay-ers. Bring snowshoes and binoculars if you have them. Bring water and a snack. Instructor is René Laubach. Rotary Donates to Haiti Relief FundBennington Rotariarns are donating to the Pure Water Fund for

Haitians to help with the world-wide relief following the devastating earthquake that hit Haiti last week.

If you would like to make a private donation to the people of Haiti, Rotary has set up a fund for this.

As Haiti continues to dig out from the devastation of a powerful earth-quake, The Rotary Foundation has established the Haiti Earthquake Relief Fund for U.S. Rotarians who want to donate toward recovery efforts. Mountain Communities Band Together to Help Haiti Relief

The mountain communities are banding together to help the people of Haiti. Please come to the Weston Rod and Gun Club on Saturday, January 23, from 5 to 7 p.m., for a community get-together. There’ll be snacks, a silent auction of extraordinary items for every budget (from a professional photo of you and your loved ones in a hot tub to a week in France!) and lots of good fellowship. Please feel free to BYOB, and parents and grandparents – bring your kids!

All the money raised will be contributed directly to Haiti relief. Whether you’re in Weston, Londonderry, Winhall, Peru, Andover or Landgrove, (or anywhere else!) it’s a chance to meet and greet your neighbors and friends while contributing desperately needed funds to a great humanitarian cause. Shelter Boxes for HaitiWith the recent devastation in Haiti, Manchester Rotary Club is giv-

ing people an opportunity to donate money to provide Shelter Boxes. The Shelter Boxes are tents that hold up to 10 people, sleeping mats, sleeping blankets, cooking stoves and eating utensils, and water puri-fication kits.

Of any amount of money you donate, 100 percent will go towards the relief effort in Haiti. This is a 501C3 non-profit organization.

AAUW Public TalkReverend Dr. Anita Shell-Lambert of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church will

give a public talk entitled “How Then Shall We Live? An Interreligious Eco-Justice Model for the Local Community.” Reverend Shell-Lambert will examine the global environmental situation and what people can bring to this moral dilemma. Using interreligious and interdisciplinary models, she will explore what we can do at the community level and how this can have a positive effect at the national level.

The talk will be held on Monday, January 25, at 7 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Meeting House, 108 School Street, Bennington. Everyone is welcome, there is no charge, and refreshments will be served. The American Association of University Women is sponsoring the talk. For further information, call Madeline at 802-447-7996.

Silent Art Auction at Winter FestivalA silent auction of photos, drawings and paintings created during

Grafton Lakes State Park’s Art in the Park program will be held at the Park’s Winter Festival on Saturday, February 6. The auction and exhibit, sponsored by the Friends of Grafton Lakes State Park, will be held in the maintenance shop from 11 a.m.-3 p.m.

The Park’s forests, wildlife, and lakes made for spectacular autumn scenery and an ample supply of inspiration for several community participants, ranging from high school photography students to profes-sional artists. Contributors created over twenty works, from which half of the auction’s proceeds will benefit the Friends of Grafton Lakes State Park.

Bidding will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., when the Friends of Grafton Lakes State Park will determine the winning bids. Each piece is framed or matted, ready to adorn the purchaser’s home.

The mission of the Friends of Grafton Lakes State Park is to support and promote the environmental education programs and other activi-ties at Grafton Lakes State Park.

The 25th annual Winter Festival on Saturday, February 6 runs from 10 a.m.- 4 p.m. The Winter Festival will feature winter exhibits, vendors, and recreational programs. An ice fishing tournament, sponsored by Trout Unlimited, will begin at 5 a.m. on five ponds in the park. The tournament will run until 3 p.m. and participants must register at the park’s maintenance shop before 11 a.m. Call the park for information on pre-registering. An entry fee is required to participate in the fishing tournament, but the Winter Festival itself remains free of charge.

NorShaft Lions Club is serving up 10 different chilies at the Winter Festival, January 30, from 11:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m., at the Vermont Arts Exchange. Come enjoy the Penguin Plunge Party; dine on sumptuous chilies; listen to great music. Sample 10 chilies (3 oz. cups) for $5 or select one (8 oz. cup) for $2. Hot Dogs also available. Proceeds from the chili benefit the NorShaft Lions Club.

Proceeds from the NorShaft Lions Chili Event will go towards helping the sight and/or hearing impaired right here in our local com-munity.

Auditions at Main Street StageAuditions! Main Street Stage presents its Second Annual Short Play

Festival. Audition for a role in one of several original, never-before-pro-duced one-acts! These short plays were hand picked by company mem-bers from over 300 nationwide submissions as part of MSS’s annual playwriting contest. Auditions will be held on Saturday, January 30, and Sunday, January 31, from noon to 4 p.m., at Main Street Stage, 57 Main Street, North Adams, Massachusetts. Performance dates will be the first two weekends of March. All actors are encouraged to prepare one contemporary monologue of one minute in length, no memorization required. Main Street Stage seeks to be an artists’ playground. Hoop Shoot WinnersSunday, January 3, the Bennington Lodge of Elks

#567 held its annual Hoop Shoot for local boys and girls ages 8 to 13. Local Hoop Shoot Chairman Dale Corbett announced that the first place winners will be participating in the District completion com-ing up on Saturday, January 16 at the Bellows Falls High School. From there winners will proceed to the States, then the Regionals and finally the national competitions.

The Emergency Department at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center (SVMC) has won top honors in the United States for patient satisfaction for a fourth year in a row.

Press Ganey is an independent company that measures quality of care at healthcare facilities nationwide. They present the Summit Award, their “most prestigious designation,” to hospital services which rank in the 95th percentile for patient satisfaction for a minimum of three consecutive years.

SVMC’s Emergency Department is one of only 23 Emergency Departments to receive a Summit Award in 2009 and one of only four to be recognized with a Summit Award four years in a row.

Press Ganey is a national company that administers patient satisfac-tion surveys for thousands of healthcare facilities in the United States.
