Conquering ALS, One Mountain at a Time!Football player Steve Gleason, who

played for The New Orleans Saints from2000-2008, will always be rememberedfor his blocked punt on the night theNew Orleans Superdome reopened forthe first time after Hurricane Katrina. In2011, Steve was diagnosed with Amy-otrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), alsoknown as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, a termi-nal neuro-muscular disease.

After his diagnosis, Steve and hisfriends and family started Team Gleason,in hopes of generating public awarenessand raise funding for the research of thisterrible disease.

Recently, Team Gleason took on an-other endeavor – completing an epic ad-venture to Peru. Steve, along with KevinSwan, Michel Rivers and Scott Fujita, acrew from NFL Films and Team Gleasonmembers, endured a 7-day trek startingin Lima; taking countless buses, 2 trains,7 planes and hiking 10 miles through theIncan trail.

Their journey began in Cusco, wherethey spent 2 nights getting acclimated tothe high elevation and visiting the Cathe-dral, Qoricancha Temple, the Inca fortressof Sacsayhuaman overlooking Cusco,Qenko and Puka Pukara. They went on tovisit the village of Pisac, founded duringcolonial times, and continued their tripthrough the countryside town of

Urubamba to the ruins of Ollantaytambo. On Day 4, they woke up early to

catch the Vistadome train headed towardMachu Picchu, taking in stunning viewsof the mountains and heading into thehigh altitude cloud forest. The 21-mem-ber group, which included Steve andKevin in wheelchairs, and 18-month oldRivers, joined a group of porters beforecrossing a hanging bridge over theUrubamba River. At this time none ofthem had any idea what they were aboutto endure.

The Incan trail is a combination oflandscapes of high altitude mountainranges (the Andes) and dense subtropicalforest. It was extremely challenging tocarry the 2 wheelchairs up and down therocky narrow paths, but the fearless lead-ers, Scott, Blair and Marc, were not goingto let the lack of water and sunlight stopthem from getting to their final destina-tion. After 10 hours they finally reachedthe Sun Gate and got their first view ofMachu Picchu. Although the sun hadbeen down for a few hours and the ruinscould barely be seen through the moon-light, the group was excited to know itwas the final leg and hour or their jour-ney. Traversing downhill and along moresteps in the dimly lit site, the group finallymade it the Sanctuary Lodge for somemuch needed food, water and celebra-

tion. The following day they were elatedwith a huge sense of accomplishment tofinally see the magnificent landscape ofthe ruins and mountains.

Despite his diagnosis, Steve is deter-mined to motivate others by continuingto pursue life adventures, and has chal-lenged the worlds of technology and sci-ence to identify their most promisingdevelopments toward new treatmentsand a cure. Steve is such an inspirationand proves that with strong will and de-termination no mountain is too high toconquer!

One of their favorite views was over-looking the Urubamba, the Sacred

Valley of the Incas, situated betweenPisac and Ollantaytambo

Florida's Long-Term Care Om-budsman Program Needs You

By Diane GalemmoIn the state of Florida, a long-

term care ombudsman is a volunteerwho helps to improve the lives of peo-ple who live in long-term care settingslike nursing homes, assisted living fa-cilities and adult family care homes.

As members of Florida’s elderpopulation make the transition intolong-term care facilities, a strong sup-port system for each individual be-comes critical. Unfortunately, manylong-term care residents do not haveanyone to look out for their best inter-ests when it comes to personal health, safety, welfare and rights. That is whyombudsman volunteers are so veryimportant.

Volunteer ombudsmen seek toensure the rights, health, safety, andwelfare of these residents throughoutFlorida. Sixteen other locations inFlorida have Ombudsman Programs. The Ombudsman Program operatesunder the authority of federal and

state law.The Long-Term Care Ombuds-

man Program is made up of morethan 300 volunteers who spend thou-sands of hours each year in licensedlong-term care facilities, working toidentify, investigate and resolve theconcerns of residents and their lovedones, and performing annual assess-ments of every facility in Florida.

All it takes to volunteer is a caringspirit and a willingness to learn the“ins and outs” of being a long-termcare ombudsman.

It is a unique program whose suc-cess depends on the boldness andcompassion of volunteers. These spe-cial individuals dedicate thousands ofunpaid hours each year to ensuringthat the voices of Florida’s long-termcare facility residents are heard.

Senator Mike Fasano (R-NewPort Richey) is a supporter of the pro-gram and touts the importance of itsvolunteers. He states, “I am writing toshare with you the efforts of theFlorida Long-Term Care Ombuds-

man Program. The Program’s missionis to improve the lives of our nursinghome, assisted living, and adult family-care home residents. These certifiedcitizen volunteers routinely visit resi-dents to listen to their requests andconcerns relating to their daily lives.Ombudsmen also investigate com-plaint allegations when contacted byresidents or loved ones. With over4,300 facilities in Florida, the need forvolunteers is great. And as more indi-viduals retire to Florida, the need willbe even greater. If you are someonewho enjoys giving back to your com-munity and being a voice for seniors, please contact the Ombudsman Pro-gram to get involved."

The Pasco and North Pinellas,District 7, Long-Term Care Ombuds-man Council is located at 2523 SevenSprings Blvd. in New Port Richey. Formore information, please call (727)376-2788 or email [email protected]; visit online at www.om-budsman.myflorida.com.

Owner Taso Stassi has a warmthand energy about him that makes din-ing at Taso Italiano a unique and en-joyable experience. He and his stafftreat customers with kindness, respectand an aim to please. Whilst dining atTaso Italiano, you will often see Tasoand his charming wife Sabrina chattingit up with patrons, Chef Keith greet-ing tables to make sure meals arecooked to perfection and the lovelystaff working to make a fantastic “likehome” dining experience for guests.

Taso has an extensive backgroundin European cuisine and fine dining.Originally from Long Island, NY,Taso learned the art of fine cuisinefrom his father, who was a Captain atThe Four Seasons, often frequentedby John F. Kennedy, Aristotle Onassis, and John D. Rockefeller. There,Taso’s father earned a famous follow-ing that came along when he openedand ran the prestigious L’Epicure onLong Island. Growing up and work-ing side-by-side with his father atL’Epicure – a favorite dining spot ofBilly Joel, Christie Brinkley and manyother famous faces – young Taso de-veloped a passion for fine cooking andworld-class service. The extensiveknowledge he gained is priceless. In1982, Taso graduated from WilsonTechnological Institute of CulinaryArts with Honors. He runs his busi-ness by the same standards his fatherheld for L’Epicure. Every dish andmenu item at Taso Italiano is madefrom scratch and never pre-packaged.

Taso Italiano opened after a com-

plete renovation of the space. Bothhigh top and regular dining seats areavailable. Private parties are welcomedwith open arms. Taso Italiano has abeautiful granite full liquor bar with agreat selection of wine, beer and pre-mium liquors. The décor reflects clas-sic European style and a warmatmosphere; perfect to meet, greet, eatand drink with family/friends! Tasohad a dream to incorporate and cele-brate his family’s history in the hospi-tality business; you will find paintingsof scenic European landscapes that areover 100 years old, original servingdishes, skewers, plates and throwbackphotographs, all from Taso’s father’srestaurant. The classic style, traditionalmusic and perfectly lit atmosphereprovide the perfect setting for a relax-ing, enjoybable dining experience.

“Many places are more concernedwith frou-frous and flair; they have losttouch with old world flavor and theimportance of good comfort food,”says Taso. “I am focusing on bringingback good traditional European cook-

ing with great presentation. I nevershortcut and I offer diners optionsthat are the backbone of traditionalEuropean cooking with a continentaledge. From Greek, French and Italianto a mix of Americano and Mediter-ranean styles – there is somethingeveryone will love here.”

Everything Fresh!Taso Italiano uses the finest ingre-

dients. The steaks are all hand-cut inhouse and upper 2/3 choice beef; inother words – the best you can get. Allseafood comes fresh from local vendorTrinity Seafood and is purchased daily,so it is never frozen! An interestingaside - the owner of Trinity Seafood isactually the son of the man whoTaso’s father bought all his freshseafood from in NY – WOW! Bothsons carried on their fathers’ legacies, and unknown to each other, moved tothe same area of Florida.

Hand-selected fresh herbs areused to flavor classic dishes and sea-sonal vegetables are chosen for theirfreshness, flavor and ability to compli-ment each separate dish. The sauces, salad dressings, stocks and soups aremade from scratch in-house. Pastriesare made on the premises, along withthe hand-tossed pizza dough. ChefKeith has an amazing culinary story ofhis own – he owned four restaurantsin Manhattan – and is a classicallytrained chef and pastry chef.

“My claim to success is that youare only as successful as those you sur-round yourself with,” says Taso. “I amblessed to be surrounded by suchwonderful people that make up ourteam. Sabrina, our manager Howie, and our chefs, Keith, Jim, Bill andGeorge, and our great wait staff allplay a huge part in the success of TasoItaliano. I could not have done itwithout them or my investment part-ner Pete Rostel.”

Delizioso! Dylicieux! Vόστιµα!“Delicious in any language!”

Taso showed me around hiskitchen and it was clear that immacu-late perfection is Taso’s goal when itcomes to his kitchen. He says, “I willwelcome anyone to come back and seeour work space because I am so confi-dent that we are beyond the higheststandards of cleanliness and organiza-tion.”

My night at Taso Italiano will behard to beat anytime soon as Taso andSabrina were the best of hosts. Tasoand Chef Keith helped me choose theperfect combination of dishes to sharewith my mom Kim. Howie broughtover fresh-made blueberry mojitos toget the night started and a deliciousbasket of warm, crusty bread with anherb and olive oil dipping sauce. Weloved everything we tried! The hand-breaded wedges of rich mozzarellacheese were fried to golden perfection, and an appetizer of Prince Edward Is-land Mussels, served in a dish with ex-

pertly made marinara and toast pointswas the perfect pairing of salty oceanmussels and fresh hand-selected toma-toes!

I chatted with other diners whilewaiting for our meal and soon realizedthat the several tables of people sittingnearby were repeat customers that hadbeen following Taso for years. “Forthe past ten years we have loved thefood and service Taso offers,” said thePastore family. “We have never beendisappointed. The food is authenticand quality. We love the customerservice and the ambiance, and the kidsall love the pizza! We were customersat Stassi’s Pizzeria and now we arecustomers at Taso Italiano. customers raved about – yet! But wedid have the most amazing Linguinewith Clams and Rack of Lamb eitherof us had ever tasted! The Linguinewith Clams was composed of freshwhole clams over linguine with a light, buttery garlic bianco sauce and I lovedthe sliced pieces of whole garlic mixedinto the linguine, magnificent! ChefKeith insisted we try his rack of lamband he has reason to be proud! Servedmedium rare and encrusted with gar-lic, fresh rosemary, mint and basilbread crumbs, all roasted to perfec-tion, the New Zealand rack of lambliterally fell apart at the bone. Servedwith lamb demi glaze, over a bed ofrice pilaf with fresh cut zucchini andGreek style potatoes – this specialtydish is a must-try for foodies! Big Cat Rescue - Tampa Bay’s Best Kept SecretBy Willow Hecht

Across from the Citrus Park Mallin Tampa is a little dirt road leadingback into the woods. This is EasyStreet, and it ends at one of the largestbig cat sanctuaries in the world, BigCat Rescue. About 135 unwanted, abused, and neglected exotic cats liveat the sanctuary in large outdoor en-closures. Fifteen species of cat callBCR home, the most variety of any fa-cility in the world. They range fromthe tiny 4 lb. Geoffroy’s cat to an 800lb. tiger, and include bobcats, lynx, leopards, cougars, and lions. Mostwere former pets, and others were res-cued from fur farms, circuses, roadsidezoos, and backyard breeding facilities.

The sanctuary, a 501 (c) 3 non-profit charity, has a two-part mission:1) to house and care for the cats forthe rest of their lives, and 2) to edu-cate the public about issues facing catsin captivity and in the wild. BCR isactively trying to change state and fed-eral laws governing the ownership ofand contact with exotic cats. Theyalso have a commitment to ending thetrade in exotic cats and their parts. The sanctuary is completely hands-off,

and does not breed, buy, sell, or tradecats. Situated on 45 acres of beautifulwoods with a lake in the middle, therefuge is truly a place of peace andsafety. Daily animal care, administra-tion, maintenance, and guest relationsare done by a volunteer force of nearly100, as well as eight paid staff.

Big Cat Rescue was founded in1992, almost by accident. BCR’sfounder, Carole Baskin, answered anad in the newspaper advertising bob-cat kittens for sale. At the time, shedidn’t know that exotic cats make ter-rible pets, and thought she’d like tohave one. When she arrived at thespecified address, she found fifty-sixbobcat and lynx kittens in tiny, filthycages. She was told that the place wasactually a fur farm, and that the kittenswould be slaughtered at one year ofage and turned into fur coats. Horri-fied, she bought all fifty-six kittens andbrought them to her home in Tampa.Word of mouth spread that Baskinwould take big cats, and she began todevote all of her time to rescues andcat care. Over time, cages were builton the current 45-acre propertyBaskin acquired in a foreclosure, oncea landfill. The mission of the sanctu-ary and many of its policies haveevolved over time into the world-classfacility that exists today, accredited bythe USDA and the Global Federationof Animal Sanctuaries.

Many of the cats besides the orig-inal fifty-six endured horrific condi-tions before their rescue. Cheetaro,an Asian leopard, was confined to acorn crib for the first five years of hislife, constantly breeding cubs for thepet trade with his mate. They had lit-tle shelter from subzero New Englandwinter temperatures. Joseph andSasha, a male and female lion, wereused as photo props, and had theirclaws and canine teeth removed so

they could be chained down and han-dled by guests. When they came toBCR, Sasha had a collar which had be-come embedded in her skin and hadto be cut away. Sophia, an 18-year oldcougar, lived in a chicken coop for 13years and was suffering from fleas, renal disease, and a botched declawsurgery when she was rescued. All ofthese cats now have a permanent, safe, and quiet home with toys, good food, and medical care.

Visitors to the refuge are allowedfor guided tours only. Tours for thoseover age 10 are an hour and a halflong, and are offered every day exceptThursday. Children’s tours, for thoseunder age 10, are Saturday at 9am

only, and are one hour long. Specialtours such as photo tours, feedingtours, and night tours are availablewith advance reservations. All pro-ceeds from tour donations go to feed-ing and housing the cats. For tourtimes, prices, and reservations, call813-920-4130. Many people run from one doc-tor’s appointment to the next, seeingone physician for a sore throat, andsay, a chiropractor for their back. AtFlorida Wellness & Rehab, patientsget the best of both worlds, whichcan be especially helpful when youknow that these experienced doctorsreally enjoy putting their heads to-gether and putting their patients first. One of the things they are mostproud of is their unique approach tomedicine, “combining skill and ex-pertise that spans the entire wellnessspectrum.”

Florida Wellness & Rehab’sTrinity office is located at 1820 Well-ness Lane in Building 4 of the TrinityProfessional Center, which is at thecorner of Little Road and MitchellBoulevard. Now offering two otherlocations, one in downtown Tampaon Franklin Street, and the other inZephyrhills, Florida Wellness &Rehab is popular with patients be-

cause they can be treated both med-ically and holistically all in one place.

The Florida Wellness & RehabCenter is a group of physicians fromall walks of medical life who can nowoffer patients a range of services in-cluding family medicine, chiropracticmedicine, medical acupuncture, mas-sage therapy and physical therapy.

The wellness approach is a holis-tic approach to medicine that is gain-ing popularity with people all overthe world who are tired of treatingeverything with medication when theside effects can be as bad as the prob-lem. A wellness approach is differentbecause its aim is to treat the wholeperson from the inside out, firstholistically and then medically wherenecessary, keeping in mind the wholebody. For example, a migraine isoften treated with medicine, but chi-ropractic care and acupuncture canhelp patients who suffer from mi-graines, even severe bouts of it, with-out the need for any medication atall. Another example is that while a

traditional doctor may treat highblood pressure with a medication, the doctors at Florida Wellness &

Rehab will take a closer look as towhat is causing the high blood pres-sure in the first place. Practitioners

who focus on wellness care lookdeeper and help patients actually helpthemselves!

Stephen Unger, D.C. is a promi-nent chiropractor in the area, and hehas always had a passion for fusingfamily medicine with chiropracticwellness and care. Dr. Unger previ-ously had a Chiropractic Center offof Duck Slough called Unger Chiro-practic, where he and experiencedChiropractor, Brandon Delle Chiaie,D.C., took a holistic and individual-ized approach to Chiropractic Carewith their patients.

Now, at The Florida Wellness &Rehab Center, Drs. Unger and DellaChiaie have joined with two otherChiropractors, Edward Leonard,D.C. and Holly M. Ridge, D.C., aswell as family care physicians CarolBrowne, D.O, and Tanya Gold,M.D. Spanning the three locations, these doctors are able to help theirpatients from one end of the spec-trum to the other, and consult witheach other whenever necessary.

Dr. Unger says, “We now haveChiropractic care, Physical Therapyand a family medical practice all inone.”

Dr. Carol S. Browne has an ex-tensive resume and background as a

physician and academic physician, teaching other osteopathic doctorsher techniques. Offering full serviceprimary care, Dr. Browne can helppatients with everything from thecommon cold to long-term medicalconditions. She says, “Our philoso-phy is to provide quality care that ispatient-centered. We see our patientsas individuals.”

Florida Wellness & Rehab is astate-of-the-art facility that has “in-house” technology like x-rays, labo-ratories, physical therapy rooms andeven diagnostic ultrasound.

Together with their three Li-censed Massage Therapists, SusanLyons, Kasse Hays and Sean Gill, thisentire group of professionals treatseach patient with the goal of improv-ing your health all around, fusing nu-trition, wellness, spine alignment andmedical care to help you be the mosthealthy YOU possible.

Why Florida Wellness & RehabWorks for Patients

Sometimes people say, “I don’tneed a chiropractor, I haven’t beenin a car accident!” While it’s true thatChiropractic Care is proven to behighly effective in treating those ofus who have been in a car accident,

chiropractic care is a whole lot morethan a snap and a pop fix. Chiroprac-tic Care is the second largest primaryhealth care profession in the UnitedStates, and it’s growing becausemore and more patients are begin-ning to appreciate the balance andharmony that comes with being a pa-tient. From jaw pain and neck painto knee pain, sciatica, scoliosis, headaches and injuries caused byeverything from sports to generalaging, an experienced Chiropractorcan truly change your life.

That said, sometimes after an in-jury, it may take a group of doctorsto diagnose you. After my car acci-dent, I went to a lot of different doc-tors, and none of them seemed toknow what the other one was doingfor a while. Patients who come toFlorida Wellness & Rehab can avoidthat problem altogether.

Dr. Unger says, “Sometimes Isee a patient who has come to meright after a car accident, and I cantell right away that they need to see amedical doctor. When this happens,it’s nice to be able to just let themknow that they have to see Dr.Browne, and that we will be able tocontinue their care together as ateam.” He adds, “Recently, while I

was working with a patient, I foundthat his blood pressure was extremelyhigh and I was able to get him to Dr.Browne right away. In this way, weare able to give our patients the bestpossible care without having to sendthem back out into the world withmore questions.”

The best part, in my own opin-ion, about Florida Wellness & Rehabis that they don’t just give you a pre-scription and send you out the door, these physicians walk you throughphysical therapy; they adjust yourneck, your back, your body. Theirhands-on approach is personal andeffective, and it makes a world of dif-ference.

Dr. Browne says, “Our philoso-phy is to be a cultural authority forevidence-based alternative care.”

ALS Association’s National ALS Advocacy Day& Public Policy Conference

By Alexis Selby

This past month nearly 2,000people with Lou Gehrig’s Disease, family, friends and other advocates, including Cheval resident Gary Das-satti, gathered in Washington, D.C.during ALS Awareness Month forThe ALS Association’s National ALSAdvocacy Day and Public PolicyConference.

While in Washington Gary, among with other ALS advocates, met with aides in 4 Congressmen'soffices (Representatives Hastings,Rooney, Posey and Bilirakis) as wellas with aides for Senator Nelson andSenator Rubio. Gary says, “We werebasically seeing if they were aware ofwhat ALS is and asked for continuedmonetary support from the Houseand Senate for the ALS Registry(where data is entered by current liv-ing pALS (people suffering withALS) to try to help find a commonal-ity so that a cause may be found.Currently we have no idea whatcauses ALS, only that Military per-

sonnel are twice as likely to contractthis horrible disease. We were alsoasking for continued monetary sup-port for the ALS Research Programat the Department of Defense; this isvery necessary, especially with theMilitary connection to ALS.”

Another individual who at-tended the conference’s Rally Dinnerwas Baltimore Raven O.J, Brigance, who has been living with ALS sinceMay 2007 and has been a leadingvoice in the fight against the disease. It’s Brigance’s first time attendingthe conference, and it’s the first timethey are having a rally to open thefestivities. Former New OrleansSaints safety Steve Gleason, who, likeBrigance, is also battling ALS, joinedvia Skype.

The ALS Association hosted thisthree-day conference in order to em-power individuals from across thecountry with the tools to advocatefor policies specifically designed toaccelerate the development of treat-ments for ALS.

“During the 3 days, we heard

speeches from prominent Scientistsand Research Doctors on various is-sues regarding our cause,” says Gary.“We don't know any more now than

we did when Lou Gehrig was diag-nosed 73 years ago. Treatments –there are none yet. Our main goal inraising awareness and funding to the

Cheval resident Gary Dassatti (far right) with ALS FL Chapter BoardMember Warren Nelson and Senator Bill Nelson’s aide Kerry Allen.

FL Chapter of ALS is to help withpatient care.”

O.J., who served as one of thekeynote speakers during the dinner, addressed the conference’s attendeesand discussed the transformativeroles of adversity and resiliency forthose battling this disease. Using hiscomputer generated voice he said,“We possess an eternal flame that willburn brightly until we see a cure forALS realized.” The Ravens’ senioradvisor to player development alsoshared his story at the opening of the2013 National ALS Advocacy Dayand Public Policy Conference.

“The fight against ALS has ex-isted for over a hundred years withno cure,” says Brigance. “There is aneed for greater awareness, alongwith funding for research and patientservices. My encouragement will re-mind us of the root of resiliency, which permeates our cause. We willnot stop until we find a cure.”

While there are many causes tosupport, Brigance feels ALS is oftenoverlooked when compared to cancerand other more well-known afflic-tions.

Brigance recently visited theALS Therapy Development Institutein Boston to tour their facilities and

was “excited by the prospects on thehorizon.” But a cure can’t be foundfast enough in his eyes, he said. He ishoping funding and procedures canbe fast-tracked.

“My hope is Congress will rec-ognize the devastation of ALS andwill champion our cause,” says Brig-ance. “There are countless re-searchers looking to unlock themysteries of ALS. Unfortunately, people are dying in the prime of theirlives because the answer isn’t comingquick enough.”

Kim Hanna, President and CEOof the ALS Association Florida Chap-ter, says, “Only through your effortscan we help to achieve O.J.’s and ourvision – a world without ALS.”

You heard it here first, folks!Dance Extreme Academy (DEA),which is located at 1645 DavenportDrive in Trinity, is already bursting atthe seams after only two years of beingopen in the area. That’s a big deal, sothe owner of Dance Extreme Acad-emy, Darlene Jones, has decided tocreate a brand new studio that will bemore than twice the size of the onethey currently use. Designing everylittle detail with the students and theirparents in mind, the new facility is dueto open in the fall of 2014, and itwon’t be hard to find because it willbe right across the way from their cur-rent studio!

Julie Walek, Artistic Director andinstructor at Dance Extreme Academy, says, “We currently have more than200 students, after only being opentwo years, and the new building willallow us to continue to focus on ourcommitment to a low student to

teacher ratio. We will have four studiosin the new building and a tumble trackthat will be 60 foot by 16 foot, fortumbling and acrobatics.” She adds,“And there will be at least 60 spaces ofparking!”

The new facility is also going tobe adjacent to two other, 2000-sq.-ft.units that will be available for leasewhen it opens late next year. The en-tire staff and their students are excitedabout the opportunity to expand andgrow in this way, and they are cus-tomizing the new studio to accommo-date the many students who want toattend!

The staff is also expanding andDEA has carefully chosen a staff thathas years of experience and some formof dance background, or like Julie, whom actually went to school to be-come a dance instructor. Julie says,“We currently have eight staff mem-bers and we are growing. In additionto having a dance background ourteachers also have extensive dance ed-

ucation and certifica-tions that are main-tained yearly. In fact,Dance Extreme Acad-emy’s ballet teacher,Jillian Michaels, will beattending classes atAmerican Ballet The-ater in New York Citythis summer to com-plete the professionallevel of her ABT®Teacher Training In-tensive in Level 6, 7,and Partnering of the ABT® NationalTraining Curriculum. Also, MichaelJones, who teaches Hip Hop andContemporary, is on a scholarship atan overseas dance company this sum-mer.

Dance Extreme will remain state-of-the-art with a parent lounge thatwill feature live TV feed from eachstudio, a performance viewing area, aprop room adjacent to the studios, student café, a sewing room, and alocker area.

Performing is what it’s all aboutat DEA, and in addition to perform-ing at their studio, their students getto perform all over town. Dance Ex-treme Academy has an annual tradi-tion of dancing at the beautifulWiregrass Mall during the holidays, and they especially enjoy performingfor their many friends at the OakridgeCare and Rehabilitation Center. the annual Taste of Trinity Event andthe Longleaf Festival. These perform-ances are in addition to the elaboraterecital that they put on every year fea-turing all of their dancers performing amyriad of dance styles including ballet, jazz, tap, hip-hop, acrobatics, lyrical, contemporary, musical theatre, andadding this year, modern.

DEA offers both recreational andcompetitive dancing opportunities andthe learning goes well beyond theclassroom. DEA brings talenteddancers in from all over to share theirtechniques and to teach master classes.Nick Young from So You Think YouDance and Kentrell Newton fromAmerica’s Best Dance Crew were

some of the amazing master classesthat were brought in this year. Also, acast member from Wicked came toDance Extreme Academy to teach thestudents a dance from the award-win-ning musical and to answer questionsabout dancing professionally. What anopportunity! It didn’t stop there, be-cause they invited DEA to come tothe Straz Performing Arts Center tosee what it was like backstage and tosee the intricate costumes. Talk abouta field trip!

DEA’s competition team, the Ex-treme Team, is a great opportunity forstudents to take dance to the nextlevel. Students audition each year tobecome part of this team, and then

they get to compete against otherteams across the state.

While competition is important,Julie says that she teaches her dancersto just do their best. She says, “It’s alearning experience each time theyperform. Competing is all about dedi-cation and commitment to your team. The joy of performing and seeing theirhard work pay off is the best rewardfor these kids.” That’s not to say thatthey’re not winning! The ExtremeTeam has already won awards includ-ing “Technical Excellence” and“Choreography,” and ”Versatility”showing they exceed in all genres. How amazing is that, after only twoyears of being open.

Stacey Wyman is the MarketingCoordinator, and she says, “We’re avery family-oriented dance studio.”She adds, “We go above and beyondto make sure that our students are ex-posed to other dance opportunities, even outside our studio walls. For in-stance, many of the students who at-tend DEA have auditioned for danceintensives and have won coveted spots. In fact, DEA has more than 10 stu-dents who have been selected by vari-ous dance companies, from theAmerican Ballet Theater, MODASand Patel Conservatory. Also some ofour other students are continuingtheir education at the Tampa Bay TapFestival, Broadway Theatre DanceProject, and the Tampa Bay Ballet.”

Jennifer Miller said, “My daugh-ter has been dancing in the area sinceshe was very young and this is her firstyear at Dance Extreme Academy. Wedid a lot of research into choosing anew studio this year and I am sohappy that we picked DEA. Theclasses and teachers are superb, andshe has thrived since she started lastfall. I can truly say that the DEA staffhas created a positive, nurturing envi-ronment where young girls and boys

can grow as dancers. She is also on thedance team and it has been nothingbut wonderful. You will not only re-ceive professional instruction at DEAbut you will also feel like family.”

After placing second in their cate-gory at the state competition in April,a J.W. Mitchell High School Odysseyof the Mind team advanced to theWorld Finals at the University ofMichigan in May. The team consists ofJ. W. Mitchell High School studentsJackie Freitas, Evan Robertson,Alexander Thurston, Joseph Lamarand Kara Talanda, as well as two SevenSprings Middle School students,Caitlin Freitas and Rebecca Roberson. The team is coached by Jennifer Fre-itas, mother of Jackie and Caitlin. Atthe World Finals, the team was pairedwith a German buddy team through-out the week. The students had theopportunity to spend time togetherand get to know one another.

Odyssey of the Mind is an inter-national educational program thatprovides creative problem-solving op-portunities for students from kinder-garten through college. Teammembers apply their creativity to solveproblems that range from buildingmechanical devices to presenting their

own interpretation of literary classics. They then bring their solutions tocompetition on the local, state, andworld level. Thousands of teams fromthroughout the U.S. and from about25 other countries participate in theprogram.

Sixty teams represented Odyssey’sGulf Coast Region at the state compe-tition at the University of CentralFlorida in April. However, only thisMitchell High team scored highenough at the state tournament to ad-vance to the Odyssey of the Mind 2013World Finals at Michigan State Univer-sity in East Lansing. The team raisedfunds frantically during the months ofApril and May in order to make thetrip. Local businesses, Mitchell teach-ers, friends, and family members allcontributed. The team also held twogarage sales, and by combining all oftheir efforts, they raised enough to payfor most of their trip.

Odyssey of the Mind competitionconsists of three parts: long-termproblem, spontaneous, and style. It’s acreative extravaganza where more than825 teams from all around the world

share their ideas and work.Inspired by Bugs Bunny cartoons,

the Mitchell High team memberschose a Tasmanian devil named Frankas the centerpiece of their long-termsolution. Once Frank’s nine pieces areassembled, the team attaches a spongeto his spinning tail. Frank is just onepart of the creative solution to theirlong-term problem entitled Pet Proj-ect. Creativity in overdrive was amongthe ingredients that led to success forMitchell’s OotM team.

A great deal of planning and re-hearsal goes into Odyssey of the Mind, but the judges also want to know thatteam members can improvise, hencethey are also given a spontaneousproblem. Preparation for that is trick-ier. “All we can really do is practiceother spontaneous problems fromyears past,” said Evan Roberson.“That gets the creative juices flowing.”

While only a few left the WorldFinals with a trophy, everyone cameout a winner just by solving anOdyssey of the Mind problem andcompeting on the world stage. The J.W. Mitchell High School team did notwin, but they represented their school

so well, they won an OMER award.Fewer than 10 OMERS were awardedat the competition. An OMER Awardis given to individuals or groups ofstudents who serve as an outstandingexample of Odyssey spirit throughtheir words or actions.

Dr. Giannakopouloshas been both the Chief of Staff andThe Chairman of Surgery at both Re-gional Medical Center Bayonet Pointand at the former Community Hospi-tal in New Port Richey.

While Dr. Giannakopoulos isknown for everything from successfulspine surgeries to removing brain tu-mors, I know Dr. Giannakopoulos asmy doctor. After getting into a car ac-cident in 2009, and having a terriblereaction to an epidural steroid injec-tion given to me by another doctor,Dr. Giannakopoulos was the firstphysician to really sit down with meand look at all of my films. Dr. Gian-nakopoulos ordered his own film, andwas able to properly diagnose my backand neck problems. Since then, he hasbeen a great support to me. I can hon-estly recommend him personally toeveryone I meet. He is knowledge-able, experienced, kind and profes-sional.

While Dr. Giannakopoulos is akeenly skilled surgeon, he prefers toprovide conservative treatment op-tions where possible. Unlike otherdoctors who are quick to provide pre-scription pain pills, Dr. Giannakopou-los and his staff shy away from doingso. Instead they focus on providingsafe and conservative techniques likebracing, physical therapy and interven-tional pain treatments like FacetBlocks, Epidural Injections and Ra-diofrequent Nerve Ablations.

When the conservative approachis no longer working, Dr. Gian-nakopoulos is the person to turn to forsurgery. He has more hours in theO.R. than many of the other neuro-surgeons in the state, and he has alsotrained extensively in microscopic sur-geries. In fact, all of his procedures areperformed using microscopic technol-ogy. Dr. Giannakopoulos can performevery kind of spinal surgery from min-imally invasive surgeries, to surgeriessuch as Laminectomies, Lamino-tomies, Foraminotomies, Microdiscec-tomies and brain surgeries.

One of Dr. Giannakopoulos’s pa-tients said, “I have been seeing theDoctor for seven years now. He haskept me out of pain. Last week he per-

formed a laminectomy on L4/5 and itwent perfectly. I highly recommendDr. Giannakopoulos.”

Dr. Giannakopoulos also special-izes in treating Lumbar Spinal Steno-sis, which is a narrowing of the spinethat is caused by the natural wear andtear that our spines experience in ourlifetimes. In fact, he believes that thisis the #1 spine problem that faces theelderly. Spinal Stenosis causes pain anda problem straightening the spine, leading to a bending over or a haunch.Unfortunately many elderly folks think

that this is just a part of aging thatthey have to learn to live with, butthat’s not necessarily the case.

“My focus is to help prevent pa-tients from becoming paralyzed,” saysDr. Giannakopoulos. “If a patient whoused to be able to walk two miles can’tget around the grocery store withoutpain, I can help them. The philosophyof the Neurosurgeon is to restorefunction and to preserve neurologicalfunctions. What happens in the case ofsevere Spinal Stenosis is that some-thing is encroaching on the spinal

canal, and to cure the problem, youreally need to operate. This kind ofsurgery is safe and provides between85% and 90% relief of symptoms, andthe recovery is generally very quick.”

One of Dr. Giannakopoulos’s pa-tients wrote, “My mother has hadthree cervical surgeries and is headingfor her first lumbar surgery thisweek…The staff is always very caringand take care of my questions andFMLA paperwork in record time. They have offered assurances that allwill be taken care of and it was done asstated. They even coordinated homenursing care for my mom since I can’tbe there for the full six weeks of recov-ery. When she told me she needed thelumbar surgery, I wanted to make sureDr. G was the only doctor to haveanything to do with her surgery andhe is. I’m very happy to know that Dr.G is so thorough and as skilled as he

is. Mom’s recovery has always beenweeks less than predicted and she is inher early 60s. Patience is a virtue andhis staff is nothing but.”

Whether you are having lowerback pain, neck pain, suffering fromSpinal Stenosis, or are having numb-ness or weakness in your extremities,Dr. Giannakopoulos and his staff canhelp get you back on your feet again. Iknow because he really helped me.

The Spine Center of Excellencehas three locations. The main officeis located at 11425 US Hwy 19 inPort Richey. Pasco Sheriff’s Office:Tornado Safety

Did you know that Florida is oneof the top states for tornado activity? Our location to the Gulf of Mexicoand the Atlantic Ocean helps to createthis weather phenomenon when thewarm, moist air from these watersmeets the hot, dry land over our state. Our state is also in the path of the sev-eral hurricanes and tropical stormswhich form in the Atlantic and Gulf ofMexico every year, which can alsospawn tornadoes.

That is why all Pasco familiesshould have an emergency plan. Yourfamily may not be together when adisaster strikes, so it is important toplan in advance. This includes howyou will get to a safe place; how youwill contact one another; how you willget back together; and what you willdo in different situations.

Every emergency plan should in-

clude an emergency kit. This kitshould contain: food for at least threedays, water, required medicines, a firstaid kit, and additional survival itemsshould you have to live without elec-trical power or should you have toleave your home.

An important tool that can saveyour life and the life of your lovedones is a NOAA Weather Radio. Ac-cording to FloridaDisaster.org, nearly75 percent of tornado fatalities inFlorida since 1950 have occurred be-tween 9 p.m. and 7 a.m., when peopleare least likely to be tuned into othersources of weather information. ANOAA Weather Radio is the lone gov-ernment-operated radio system thatprovides National Weather Service se-vere weather warnings 24 hours a day.If you live in the path of the severestorm, and your family has a NOAAAll-Hazards Weather Radio, the radiowill automatically sound an alarm andthen broadcast the warning message, regardless of the time of day. Thenewer weather radios even allow youto program the alarm to sound forspecific counties and hazards. If youare hard of hearing or a heavy sleeper, there is even a kit available for theradio that includes a pillow shaker andstrobe light which can wake you in themiddle of the night.

Part of law enforcement andemergency services mission duringextreme weather and disasters is toconvince citizens on the importanceof evacuations. No one wants to leavethe comfort of their home and manypeople may want to try and stay put toprotect their home and belongings. However, emergency managementpersonnel do not issue evacuation or-ders unless their experience and train-ing lead them to believe that citizens’lives are in danger. If you receive anorder to evacuate, DO SO! Remem-ber the tragic case of citizens whotried to ride out the storm when Hur-ricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast in2005. They later tried to call foremergency assistance but law enforce-ment and emergency personnel wereunable to respond, and many peoplelost their lives.

You can find more informationabout emergency plans and emergencykits at the Federal Emergency Manage-ment Agency at www.ready.gov, and atthe Florida Division of EmergencyManagement at FloridaDisaster.org.Do it today, as severe weather andother disasters can strike at any time.

best results for our patients,” says Dr.Albert. “So having a comfortable rela-tionship with your orthodontic officeand doctor is crucial as this is not a oneor two visit process. We make treat-ment as enjoyable as possible for ourpatients individually. Done properlyby an orthodontic specialist, orthodon-tics is a life-time investment that canachieve amazing results but requiresexperienced personal care.”

A graduate of East Lake HighSchool in Tarpon Springs, Dr. Albertreally enjoys practicing in the area hegrew up in and where he is now raisinghis own family. He is a specialist in Or-thodontics and Dentofacial Orthope-dics. A graduate (with honors) of TheUniversity of Florida’s College of Den-tistry, he also completed his Orthodon-tic Residency, received hisOrthodontics Certificate, and earnedhis Master’s of Science Degree fromUF. Proudly serving communitiesthroughout Pasco and Pinellas Coun-ties, Albert Family Orthodontics offersa friendly, professional staff and awarmly decorated offices equippedwith state-of-the-art orthodontic treat-ment technology, digital imaging and

memory foam dental chairs that aresuper comfortable for patients.

Dr. Albert provides conveniencesthat many other offices don’t have, fromself-check-in options and free Wi-Fi, tofreshly brewed Keurig Coffee and freshlybaked Otis Spunkmeyer chocolate chipcookies. Enjoy watching a movie or thenews on one of the large flat-screen tele-visions while relaxing in one of the com-fortable seating areas or get moving andplay some XBOX Kinect! The latest ad-dition to their entertainment areas isiPad kiosks, loaded with the latest appsand movies.. all just a touch screen away!Albert Family Orthodontics caters to pa-tients, parents and all guests in a way thatexceeds expectations.

Dawn R. says, “My daughter is apatient at the Palm Harbor locationand we absolutely love it! Dr. Albertand his staff are professional and veryfriendly. The staff really treats the chil-dren like little adults. I often go backwith my daughter during her appoint-ments and I can hear the staff talkingwith the other patients and you can tellthey really care and get to know the pa-tients. I have not ever had an appoint-ment where I had to sit and waitbecause the office was backed up.They send reminder emails regardingappointments and even follow up witha phone call. I tell all of my friends

and family about this office [who are]looking for a GREAT orthodontist!”

Based on the American Associationof Orthodontists guidelines, Dr. Albertrecommends that patients come in for afree consultation around the age of sevenso that he can educate parents on whatto expect when permanent teeth comein. Preparing parents ahead of time al-lows for a significantly smoother transi-tion into braces and everyone involvedcan be informed of the process all theway around. The majority of patients

that come in to Dr. Albert are moni-tored at no charge until they are teensand ready to receive alignment.

Both regular metal braces and“clear” braces are offered at AlbertFamily Orthodontics, along with In-visalign. Dr. Albert is an Elite PreferredProvider of Invisalign, a series of clearcomputer-generated “aligners” to invis-ibly fix smiles. This revolutionary treat-ment system is available for adults andteens. “We take great pride in helpingour patients achieve the smile and bite

This summer, Albert Family Ortho-dontics is hosting their 2nd annual“Summer of Music and Smiles” contest!Patients will get the opportunity to winfour free tickets to two of the hottestsummer concert tours coming toTampa. Last year’s giveaway was fourtickets to One Direction, which to a lotof the girls was hard to beat, but Dr. Al-bert aims to please! He said, “This yearwe are giving away Justin Bieber ticketsbut I also wanted to offer somethingthat adults would get excited about tooand I included a contest to win Maroon5 and Kelly Clarkson tickets. We have alot of adult patients, too; 30 percent ofmy patients are adults.”

Dr. Albert says, “Social media hasbecome a great platform to run our pa-tient contests through. We have reallystarted using our Facebook page a lotto have a fun interaction with patientsand let everyone know about our up-coming events and contests.”

Charitable involvement with hislocal community has always been a pri-ority for Dr. Albert. He is a memberand Paul Harris fellow of the RotaryClub of Trinity, whose mission is sup-porting local children’s charities.Every year, Albert Family Orthodonticshosts a “Candy Buy Back” after Hal-loween, where sweets are donated totroops stationed overseas. Albert Fam-ily Orthodontics also participates inToys for Tots through the SalvationArmy every holiday season.

Last year, Albert Family Ortho-dontics held a ‘Making a Change’ con-test for local schools and was able togive $1000 to J. W. Mitchell HighSchool and $250 each to Ozona Ele-mentary and Madeira Beach Funda-mental. “We listed all of the schools inthe area that my patients go to,” saysDr. Albert. “The top 3 schools with

the most likes on our Facebook pagewere entered into a random drawingfor the top prize. Even though my of-fices are in Trinity and Palm Harbor,my patients come from all over and theMadeira Beach parents were reallycompetitive.” Dr. Albert truly seems toenjoy interacting with patients andfamilies outside of his office and is al-ways looking for fun ways to show hisappreciation. A patient appreciationparty is even held every year at AstroSkate where patients get to skate forfree and enjoy some fun times!

You will always be treated withprofessional care and the latest andgreatest in orthodontics. Take it fromhis satisfied patients, Dr. Albert doesnot disappoint!

One patient writes, “Our familyabsolutely loves Jeremy Albert and hisstaff! He has such a wonderful andfriendly demeanor with us and with ourchildren. His office is beautiful andsuper clean with cool video games forthe kids to play on while they wait. Theactual patient rarely has to wait overfive minutes before they're seen, butthe video games are great for the sib-lings who have to come along to theappointments. There's also Wi-Fi ac-cess and great coffee for the parents toaccess. His staff always greets you witha smile and are so pleasant to workwith.
