Triangle Area Ostomy Association
June 2014
President’s Message:
My first thought seeing how many people attended our breakout session meeting was WOW! 41 people! I believe that is possibly the largest ever to attend any TAOA meeting. My second thought was how lucky we are to have the WOC Nurses working with us as they do. Without them, we would not have the fine organization we witness every month. On June 3
rd, we will have our last get together of this Spring season. I hope that we continue to have a large number
of people attending. I urge you to bring your spouse/significant other along with you to all the meetings. Please consider the open positions of vice-president, secretary, and Newsletter editor. These are being vacated and it is definitely the time for others to “step up.” Thank you in advance for considering to run/volunteer for one of these offices. For those of you I may not be seeing on the 3
rd, I wish you an enjoyable yet restful and healthy Summer.
Respectfully submitted, Sam DeAngelo, President IN THIS ISSUE:

Co-chaired by WOC nurses Lara Leininger from UNC Hospital and Angela Richardson from Duke Hospital. We have teamed up with Doug Yakich who is the Director of Media for the National UOAA, Inc. to host the inaugural WannaWearOne Ostomy AWEARness 5K run/walk on Ostomy Awareness Day on October 4th, 2014 at Omega Sports next to Southpoint Mall in Durham, NC. The race will start and finish at the park-ing lot of Omega Sports and will run 3.1miles along the American Tobacco Trail. Our mission is to bring awareness and education about ostomy surgery to the community and show empathy to ostomates. All proceeds will be donated to the 501 (c) charity, UOAA. We will have ostomy-related sponsorship for the race, Hollister has already committed to being a top sponsor. Convatec and Coloplast are highly con-sidering joining as top sponsorships. Other sponsors will help make this race a huge success. Doug Yakich and the UOAA have announced that our race will be their marquee event for the whole year. Doug will be flying out for the race as well. We will have the pouching companies donate ostomy pouches to be placed in our WannaWearOne race bags to allow the community to understand more about ostomies. Those that do not have an ostomy will be highly encouraged to wear the ostomy pouch during the race.
The WannaWearOne 5k registra-tion site is up and running, so feel free to spread the word and sign up for the race! Here is the link for registration for the race: http://www.active.com/durham-nc/running/races/wannawearone-ostomy-awearness-5k-2014?int If you are unable to participate with
