Every March individuals tap into their inner Irish and celebrate St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. Myth and fact have melded over the years with respect to St. Patrick, and many people aren’t quite sure what to believe about this be-loved holiday.

Test your St. Patrick’s Day knowledge with the quiz below.1. St. Patrick was Irish.

Blarney: St. Patrick was born in what today would be called Britain. He was kidnapped by Irish brigands and brought to Ireland at age 16. He later escaped to Gaul (France) and returned to his home-land. Because no one in the 5th century was known as British, Patrick can be more accurately called a Celtic Briton, son of a low-level Roman official.2. Patrick wasn’t the first Christian mis-sionary to visit Ireland.

Fact: There were other missionaries to visit the Emerald Isle, but none were as successful as Patrick. One of the best known was Palladius. In fact, some of the accomplishments attributed to Patrick may have actually been the result of Pal-ladius’ work.3. St. Patrick drove snakes into the Irish Sea.

Blarney: Snakes have never been na-tive to Ireland, and Patrick did not drive any off the land. This may have been a metaphor for druidic religions, which be-gan to disappear as Christianity spread on the island.4. The Christian concept of the Trinity

being taught with a shamrock cannot be accurately credited to St. Patrick.

Fact: There is no mention of using a three-leaf shamrock to teach the concept of the trinity in Patrick’s writings. Some have suggested the idea derives from an earlier Celtic tradition of using the sham-rock as a metaphor representing a “trust in your soul,” “belief in your heart” and “faith in your mind.” Who Christianized the idea is not certain.5. Green was always a lucky color with the Irish.

Blarney: Irish folklore states that green was the favorite color of the Good People (Irish fairies). The fairies would steal people, especially children, who wore too much green. Hence the color was long thought to be unlucky.6. The annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade is an Irish tradition.

Blarney: Actually, it’s an American tradition. The Irish used to commemorate St. Patrick in a solemn religious remem-brance. The original St. Patrick’s Day

Parade may be traced to a party in New York City, which Irishman John Marshall held at his home. Guests walked together to the house, thus forming an unofficial parade.7. Drinking Guinness, the popular Irish stout, could be good for the heart.

Fact: According to research by the American Heart Association, Guin-ness may be as effective as daily aspirin in reducing the blood clots that cause heart attacks. The benefit comes from antioxidants, which the researchers say reduce cholesterol deposits on arterial walls. Therefore, raise a glass and say, “Slainte!”8. Leprechauns are cute, mischevious elves in Irish folklore.

Blarney: Actually, they were disgrun-tled, nasty and brutish elves in the em-ploy of Irish fairies as cobblers.9. Luck of the Irish refers to the abun-dance of luck long enjoyed by the Irish.

Blarney: It refers to the luck many Irish descendants had during the gold and silver rush in America during the 19th century. However, it can also be inter-preted as a condescending remark refer-ing to the Irish only finding gold due to luck, not brains.10. The “O” in many Irish surnames does not refer to a shortening of the word “of”.

Fact: “O” is the Gaelic word for grand-son. The British, who were colonizing Ireland, mistook it for a shortened form of “of” and added the apostrophe.

Have you heard this before? A tired dog is a happy dog. And I’ll add this: A tired dog makes for a happy human. Lack of ex-ercise and mental stimulation for a dog is the root of many behavior problems. To have a well rounded and healthy dog, you should find ways to give Frisky Fido plenty of physical exercise and mental stimula-tion. Give Physical Exercise: Many people believe that letting their dog out of the door to roam and ramble on his own is exercise enough. Not so. Does someone opening the door to the gym guarantee you’ll get the exercise you need? Nope. Also not true for your dog. And a short walk on a leash isn’t enough either. Think about it. When have you ever seen a dog, off leash, walk-ing slowly in a straight line? You need to make sure you give Frisky Fido plenty of opportunities in a safe area to have some off-leash play time. He needs a chance to really stretch his legs! You could throw a ball, play a rousing game of fetch or teach him to chase a Frisbee. Take your dog to a dog park or join us on the 2nd Saturday of each month for our Play in the Pasture Day, an off-leash, outdoor social for you and your dog. Hide and Seek outside (always in a safe area) is also fun. While your dog

is looking away from you and interested in something else, quickly dart behind the nearest tree or scamper behind the shrub-bery. When he notices you’re gone, he’ll likely begin the hunt. If not, tempt him by calling him in a soft, high pitched tone of voice to help him start the game. Mental Stimulation: This is equally as im-portant in a dog’s life. Working your dog’s brain tires him just as physical exercise does. There are so many wonderful interac-tive puzzle toys and games for dogs these days, too numerous to list them all, so here are three of my favorites: • Kongs: A beehive-shaped piece of rubber with holes at either end, its sole purpose is to keep your dog busy. Fill the Kong with cheese, baby food, milk bones, or any combination of dog-safe treats, and he’ll smell the food inside and use his mouth, tongue and paws to work it out. Start with treats that fall out fairly easily and work up to more difficult challenges. Eventually, she’ll be ready for the hard stuff: frozen Kongs, which are smeared with something gooey (like peanut butter) and tossed into the freezer for a few hours.• Busy Buddy: The Busy Buddy line of treat dispensing chew toys can help you keep your dog busy and work his mind at

the same time. Each Busy Buddy toy is made with a different and unique chewing experience in mind and helps redirect po-tentially destructive chewing behavior into positive playtime.• Linkables: These are just such fun! Link-ables are new treat-dispensing puzzle toys that will keep your dog engaged and play-ing for hours. Start with one toy and add another (and another) as your dog masters the game. You can mix and match the Links to create an ever-changing toy combination for your dog. And then, of course, the Find It Game works a dog’s brain. The game can be played with a favorite toy. Again, have the dog “sit” and “wait.” Show him the toy and encour-age him to sniff it. In the beginning hide the toy in plain sight and give LOTS of praise for the “find.” Pretty soon the toy can be hidden in more difficult places, like under sofa cushions or in other rooms. With the addition of more physical exer-cise with your dog and the added mental stimulation from a variety of mind games and interactive treat dispensing puzzle toys you’ll have a tired dog and a happy hu-man! Individual Meat Loaves

• 1 tablespoon good olive oil • 3 cups chopped yellow onions (3 onions) • 1 teaspoon chopped fresh thyme leaves • 2 teaspoons kosher salt • 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper • 3 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce • 1/3 cup canned chicken stock or broth • 1 tablespoon tomato paste • 2 1/2 pounds ground chuck (81 percent lean) • 1/2 cup plain dry bread crumbs• 2 extra-large eggs, beaten • 1/2 cup ketchup

DirectionsPreheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Heat the olive oil in a medium saute pan. Add the onions, thyme, salt, and pepper and cook over

medium-low heat, stirring occa-sionally, for 8 to 10 minutes, un-til the onions are translucent but not brown. Off the heat, add the Worcestershire sauce, chicken stock, and tomato paste. Allow to cool slightly. In a large bowl, combine the ground chuck, on-ion mixture, bread crumbs, and eggs, and mix lightly with a fork. Don’t mash or the meatloaf will be dense. Divide the mixture into 6 (10 to 11-ounce) portions and shape each portion into a small loaf on a sheet pan. Spread about a tablespoon of ketchup on the top of each portion. Bake for 40 to 45 minutes, until the in-ternal temperature is 155 to 160 degrees F and the meat loaves are cooked through. Serve hot.

What a perfect name for a used book store. A store where you would expect to find only old and used books. Not so with a wonderful book store tucked away in the Valley Village Shopping Center in Murphy, North Carolina. The proprietor of Twice Upon A Time, Lori Anderson has turned a used book store into a very unique experience. Yes, there are used books, but there are also new books, dvd’s, gifts, greeting cards, candles and little nooks to sit and quietly peruse you selections, a play area for children to en-joy while the folks are browsing, a cat named Shakespeare and last but certainly not least are her wonderful soaps and lo-

tions that she makes herself. When asked about the origination of this craft, she is not shy about telling you how it began out of necessity. It is true that necessity is the mother of invention and Lori has certainly profited from it. Her custom gift baskets are filled with the wonderful scents of her lotions and soaps that she has created. Have you ever heard of chocolate soap? Well Lori has it. What a wonderful shop. When you go, plan to spend a good bit of time because there is quite a lot to see and smell.Twice Upon A Time

Valley Village Shopping Center, 1214 Andrews Rd., Murphy, N.C. 28906; (828) 835-9319, Lori Anderson (Proprietor).

In these difficult economic times, many companies are using intimidating sales techniques to lure new business. Unfortunately, as many of us tighten our belts and seek cost cutting methods, we can some-times be swayed by fast talking sales representatives. Over the past few weeks, several local businesses have contacted me with questions and concerns about their merchant accounts. It appears that our area has been targeted by some of these unscrupulous sales represen-tatives of a Merchant Services company.

The scenario is the same. This company uses a boil-er room sales environment and will continue to harass you via telephone until you make an appointment with their local representative. As business owners, we all need to carefully review any contracts prior to signing them. While it is certainly helpful for someone to ex-plain what we are signing, the bottom line is that you are signing the contract. Whatever you do, do not sign with this company until you read their contract very carefully. The representative will tell you there is no long term contract, which many business owners have come to find out is not true. Just remember to perform due diligence. Ask for references, and check them. Do internet research for compliments and complaints.

I am President of Smoky Mountain Merchant Ser-

vices, which is a local company that has been in busi-ness since 2005. I hate to see our local businesses be-ing ripped off by companies who have no stake in our community and will use deceptive practices to close

the deal at any cost!Bonnie DuPree, Ryle & Associates Inc., dba Smoky

After such a harsh win-ter, I know we are all ready to welcome Spring with daffodils and cro-cus popping out of the ground. However, along with the warm weather comes the spring thaw which equates to, in many locations, flooding. I have worked with FEMA for a number of years and this is the beginning of our “busy season”. Flash floods occur in places one would never expect. In the past couple of years, people who have never lived in a flood-plain and have never had been flooded experienced minimum to total disaster from flooding. I live next to Junaluska Creek and paid close attention dur-ing the heavy rains, espe-cially on the mountain. I have seen the devastation a flash flood can create, not just taking out prop-erty but human lives that were unaware and unpre-pared.

Being prepared for any disaster could make the difference between being safe and an otherwise bad outcome. Make sure you and all members of the family know the location of the nearest designated shelter and have a prear-ranged designated meet-ing place. In Cherokee County, the designated shelters are located in the Andrews, Murphy and Hiawassee Dam High Schools. Know the evac-uation route(s) to get to safety. Also, make sure to check on your elder-

ly family members and neighbors or alert first re-sponders to their location. Individuals and fami-lies need to plan to use their own resources and financial reserves. Are you prepared if disaster hit today?

Systematic planning and immediate action by your local state, federal and tribal government is essential to ensure effec-tive response and rapid recovery from disasters. Call your county emer-gency manager to make sure you are aware of shelter locations, evacua-tion routes and any other pertinent information. Make sure your local government first respond-ers are aware of popula-tions needing special as-sistance in the event of emergency/disaster. If you are a first responder, are you satisfied with the training provided to you? A trained first responder

team can make the differ-ence between organized rescue and evacuation and pure chaos.

Sometimes things hap-pen for which no one can ever be prepared, but awareness and prepara-tion can make a big dif-ference. Print out the FEMA Survival Kit list shown on FEMA.gov, pack your kit and stay diligent, especially if you live in or near flood prone areas. Below is the short list of things to prepare in your survival kits.

Food, water, utensils for at least three days; Medi-cations; Clothing; Per-sonal Hygiene to include disposable diapers, etc.; Valuables and important documents and remember to safeguard your dwell-ing, if possible.

Yes, Spring is ap-proaching. Let’s all pack our kits and hope we do not have to use them.

Advancing the clock one hour in the springtime and pushing it back one hour in the autumn has become the norm for many coun-tries. The intention is to maximize sunlight in the afternoon hours during the summer.

Many people think DST was established to benefit the farming community. However, many of those who make their living with agriculture say it does not help their work, and more sunlight in the morning is beneficial instead. Histori-ans believe that DST was also used to reduce the dependence on candles or incandescent lighting. To-day, however, energy usage

fluctuates among regions of the world, so there is no concrete benefit measured from DST and its impact on energy usage. DST-does seem to help indus-tries, like sporting goods and recreation, retailers and outdoor places that see greater participation in the summer when there are more daylight hours for frolicking after work. It is also purported to reduce automotive accidents. But it can hurt industries like farming, television broad-casting and movie the-aters.

Whether DST continues into the future will remain a topic of debate. However, while it lasts, remember to

switch your clocks an hour ahead on March 14. When

doing so, it’s a good idea to check the batteries in

smoke and carbon monox-ide alarms.
