I want to thank all who are going to the outdoor degree this year and remind you that the costs are to be paid to John Ellis for rooms and meals. We have 41 signed up so far and 9 rooms requested. Please if you need a room and did not sign up do so ASAP. We may have 2 Third degrees as I have agreed to do one for Sandy Valley if they are ready. The Visit to Escurial Lodge at Virginia City is shaping up. We can get rooms in Carson City (about 16 miles away) for 60 dollars a night with double occupancy with RV parking. That is 30 dollars each, very cheap but for two nights is 60 plus fees. I have a reading/big brother/sister program that one of our schools want us to do from 2:30 to 3:15 and need volunteers for that. It would be once a week for about and hour or so to help at risk children who need better reading skills. They are our future and need a little help. March 1st threw the 4th is Nevada reading week and would like to have several brothers participate. Call me at 592-9249 or e-mail at [email protected] and will give you the information. The century club has collected 1000 dollars I am hoping to raise that to 2000 or more as half of this will go to the Veterans Home in Boulder City when we make a trip there. Looking at first week of April for a visit. March is a busy month with visitations with school observance and youth group meetings scheduled. Check our calendar at Nellis lodge 46.org to see what we have planed. The scholarship program paper work needs to be in by first week in April so as to select one or two to receive our Donald G. Hines scholarship of 500 to a thousand dollars. Fraternally Mike

My Brothers, why be a Mason? There are many

worthwhile organizations out there. What

separates us from any other charitable or fraternal

organization? I guess antiquity and the allure of

the name help bring men to the craft. But, is that

what we‟re about. Any brother would tell you no,

we‟re about so much more. We‟re about brotherly

love and making good men better. My question is

how? The typical response from many brothers is

charitable work. Really, there are thousands of

charitable groups, what separates us from any one

of them. Do they not make men better? I could be

misguided but for me, Masonry is about being in a

place where there is the security of free thought

and the acceptance of one another even if you

disagree. Masonry is where a man knows without

a shadow of a doubt that other men are committed

to living the values that we obligate ourselves to. Because we are an ancient fraternal

organization who‟s men are vigilant to the values of morality and spirituality for the

common good of all. We can be proud of our history but, history goes only so far, we

must strive to stay vigilant in the pursuit of the values we obligate ourselves to. There

is a saying, “that for evil to triumph needs only good men to do nothing” meaning

inaction leads to suffering and eventual death. I‟m not trying to be mellow dramatic,

only to emphasize the importance of action. Every man must be the judge of the

length of his own cable tow (and that cable tow should not be judged by others), yet

he should be mindful of the needs of Masonry especially to the lodge he calls home.

Nellis 46 is going through many changes so that we can be vigilant without

compromise, to the ancient ideas and landmarks in the here and now. We as her

members need to answer her call. From mentoring, coaching, participating in ritual

and her many charitable works. No one or small few can make it work, but together

as a whole lodge each doing what is within the length of his cable tow, can make

enormous and pronounced effects, that make not only us

proud but all that see us.

May God bless keep and bless us and our families,

Fraternally Scott

Senior Warden

Brothers, greetings from the South

Get ready; it is almost time for our yearly

fun! What is he talking about you ask?

Well, it is our fireworks booth … come

one come all and join the fun this year!

We will be handing out a sign-up sheet

at our next Stated Meeting.

I stated in my last article that I was

investigating different papers and articles

on Masonic conduct, specifically how we

Masons should act while abroad in the

world at large and most importantly to

each another. I have been told that

chivalry is dead. I disagree … I believe

we should be acting as true knights of

old. It is not important that I inform people that I am a Mason but

when I do, I want to leave a lasting impression when they think,

“Hummm, I knew there was something different about that man!”

One of our basic philosophies is and has been to take good men

and make them better. I have received an article dated 1896 from

the Grand Lodge of Washington authored by William H. Upton,

PGM which I believe provides us something about which we

should ponder.

From the Sidelines By Brian Higgins

What does Enoch have to do with Freemasonry? Mackey points out that Enoch doesn't appear in the Old Charges until Anderson's Constitutions.

Everbody knows Enoch has something important to do with Freemasonry, but what?

Mackey writes that Enoch's name means "dedicated" in He-brew. I took that as a clue and looked up the both the name Enoch, and the word "dedicated," in the Bible.

Enoch's name appears 12 times in 11 verses of the King James Bible. The word "dedicated" appears 24 times in 20 verses. In three of these verses (Deut 20:5, Kings 8:63, Chron 7:5) the word for "dedicated" is in fact almost identical to the name Enoch.

The Bible research web site I use gives audio pronunciations of Bible words. A 22 second sound clip of both words spoken is attached. The first word spoken is the name Enoch. The second word spoken is "dedicated." You don't need to read Hebrew to hear the similarity.

What about the other citation in which "dedicated" appears in the Bible? The other word for "dedicated" in the Bible is ka-dosh.

My lead flight attendant came to me and said, "We have an H.R. on this flight." (H.R. stands for human remains.) "Are they military?" I asked. 'Yes', she said. 'Is there an escort?' I asked. 'Yes, I already assigned him a seat'. 'Would you please tell him to come to the flight deck. You can board him early," I said. A short while later a young army sergeant entered the flight deck. He was the image of the perfectly dressed soldier. He introduced himself and I asked him about his soldier. The escorts of these fallen soldiers talk about them as if they are still alive and still with us. He proceeded to answer my questions, but offered no words. I asked him if there was anything I could do for him and he said no. I told him that he had the toughest job in the military and that I appreciated the work that he does for the families of our fallen soldiers. The first officer and I got up out of our seats to shake his hand. He left the flight deck to find his seat. We completed our preflight checks, pushed back and performed an uneventful departure. About 30 minutes into our flight I received a call from the lead flight attendant in the cabin. 'I just found out the family of the soldier we are carrying, is on board', she said. She then proceeded to tell me that the father, mother, wife and 2-year old daughter were escorting their son, husband, and father home. The family was upset because they were unable to see the container that the soldier was in before we left. We were on our way to a major hub at which the family was going to wait four hours for the connecting flight home to Virginia. The father of the soldier told the flight attendant that knowing his son was below him in the cargo compartment and being unable to see him was too much for him and the family to bear. He had asked the flight attendant if there

was anything that could be done to allow them to see him upon our arrival. The family wanted to be outside by the cargo door to watch the soldier being taken off the airplane. I could hear the desperation in the flight attendants voice when she asked me if there was anything I could do. I‟m on it, I said. I told her that I would get back to her. Airborne communication with my company normally occurs in the form of e-mail like messages. I decided to bypass this system and contact my flight dispatcher directly on a secondary radio. There is a radio operator in the operations control center who connects you to the telephone of the dispatcher. I was in direct contact with the dispatcher. I explained the situation. I had on board with the family and what it was the family wanted. He said he understood and that he would get back to me. Two hours went by and I had not heard from the dispatcher. We were going to get busy soon and I needed to know what to tell the family. I sent a text message asking for an update. I saved the return message from the dispatcher and the following is the text: Captain, sorry it has taken so long to get back to you. There is policy on this now and I had to check on a few things. Upon your arrival a dedicated escort team will meet the aircraft. The team will escort the family to the ramp and plane side. A van will be used to load the remains with a secondary van for the family. The family will be taken to their departure area and escorted into the terminal where the remains can be seen on the ramp. It is a private area for the family only. When the connecting aircraft arrives, the family will be escorted onto the ramp and plane side to watch the remains being loaded for the final leg home. „Captain, most of us here in flight control are veterans. Please pass our condolences on to the family. Thanks.' I sent a message back telling flight control thanks for a good job.

MAY GOD BLESS THIS AIRLINE CAPTAIN

Page 11: Trestleboard, March 2011

11

I printed out the message and gave it to the lead flight attendant to pass on to the father. The lead flight attendant was very thankful and told me, 'You have no idea how much this will mean to them.' Things started getting busy for the descent, approach and landing. After landing, we cleared the runway and taxied to the ramp area. The ramp is huge with 15 gates on either side of the alleyway. It is always a busy area with aircraft maneuvering every which way to enter and exit. When we entered the ramp and checked in with the ramp controller, we were told that all traffic was being held for us. There is a team in place to meet the aircraft', we were told. It looked like it was all coming together, then I realized that once we turned the seat belt sign off, everyone would stand up at once and delay the family from getting off the airplane. As we approached our gate, I asked the copilot to tell the ramp controller we were going to stop short of the gate to make an announcement to the passengers. He did that and the ramp controller said, 'Take your time. I stopped the aircraft and set the parking brake. I pushed the public address button and said, 'Ladies and gentleman, this is your Captain speaking I have stopped short of our gate to make a special announcement. We have a passenger on board who deserves our honor and respect. His Name is Private XXXXXX, a soldier who recently lost his life. Private XXXXXX is under your feet in the cargo hold. Escorting him today is Army Sergeant XXXXXXX. Also, on board are his father, mother, wife, and daughter. Your entire flight crew is asking for all passengers to remain in their seats to allow the family to exit the aircraft first. Thank you.' We continued the turn to the gate, came to a stop and started our

shutdown procedures. A couple of minutes later I opened the cockpit door. I found the two forward flight attendants crying, something you just do not see. I was told that after we came to a stop, every passenger on the aircraft stayed in their seats, waiting for the family to exit the aircraft. When the family got up and gathered their things, a passenger slowly started to clap his hands. Moments later more passengers joined in and soon the entire aircraft was clapping. Words of 'God Bless You', I'm sorry, thank you, be proud, and other kind words were uttered to the family as they made their way down the aisle and out of the airplane. They were escorted down to the ramp to finally be with their loved one. Many of the passengers disembarking thanked me for the announcement I had made. They were just words, I told them, I could say them over and over again, but nothing I say will bring back that brave soldier. I respectfully ask that all of you reflect on this event and the sacrifices that millions of our men and women have made to ensure our freedom and safety in these United States of AMERICA .
