Bicycle Friendly Communities is an organization that helps governments and businesses understand the building of cycling-friendly infrastructure—things like bike lanes, bike bridges, bike paths, and bike parking. IMBA is the International Mountain Biking Association, the organization that works with both the government and private land owners to protect trail access and to teach the art of building fun, sustainable MTB trails.

Our employees share our love of bikes. Trek hallways and offices are crammed with employee bicycles, many covered in mud from a recent trail run. We encourage our people to ride their bikes to work, and even at work. Lunchtime road rides through the rolling Wisconsin hills, workday mountain bike rides on our extensive network of trails, a commuter program that makes it easier for every employee to go by bike—all because we believe the more time our people spend on two wheels, the better.

Trek is one of the biggest bicycle manufacturers in the world. But that doesn’t mean we want to throw our weight around. We’re constantly looking for ways to improve our manufacturing and business practices to reduce our global footprint and reflect our better-world goals. A few examples:

GREEN ENERGY. Trek is the first manufacturer in Wisconsin to switch entirely to renewable electric power. We used to burn 10.5 million pounds of coal each year. Now we burn 0.

SmALLER FOOTPRINT. We are a manufacturer, which means we have a say in how our bikes are built, regardless of which facility produces them. For years now we’ve been challenging our manufacturing suppliers to build smarter: Less packaging. Less transportation of raw materials. Less impactful raw materials. More efficient shipping. Our suppliers are rising to the challenge, refining their processes in ways big and small. It’s a long process of education, watchful oversight, and asking for the right thing—and well worth the effort. Small hinges swing big doors, as they say, so even the small changes can have a big impact.

PRODUCT LIFE CYCLE. All our products are designed for long life, and we’ve worked with our dealers to develop innovative recycling programs to minimize our products’ end-of-life impact. We’ve even helped create a non-profit program, dream-bikes.org, that breathes new life into discarded bikes of any brand, teaches kids valuable skills, and helps neighborhoods in need.

I’M GARY FISHER, DREAMER OF BIKES.

I’ve been dreaming about them forever. Since before I threw some motorcycle parts on a WWII cruiser bike and took it off road. Since the first time my friends and I bombed our new inventions down Mt. Tam—and hitchhiked back up so we could do it all over again. Since I coined the term “mountain bike,” and started a company by that name to spread the word.

And I’ve been dreaming ever since.

But now I have a really big dream. To get more people on bikes—everywhere. To take my message global. Bigger. Bolder. Broader. It’s a goal my friends at Trek are helping me achieve. We’re combining forces. My dreams, brought to you by the best bike maker on the planet.

Trek engineers and manufactures carbon fiber frames here in our Waterloo, WI, USA headquarters. We’ve been doing it for over twenty years, and we’ve produced more carbon frames worldwide than anyone else.

Trek continues to pioneer what’s possible with carbon right here at home, in the highest-tech carbon bicycle facility in the world. Our frames are imagined, tested, and perfected by our 37 carbon engineers, including 11 Composite Materials Engineering specialists and 9 bona fide rocket scientists. (Why rocket scientists? Because the aerospace industry is THE hotbed of carbon innovation.)

Why staff a high-overhead facility with the best engineers and carbon craftsmen in the business, when our competitors outsource all their frames? Because if you build like everyone else, you’ll end up with product like everyone else. And that’s not good enough for us. Trek is out to build the world’s best carbon fiber framesets—and that takes research, engineers, and carbon manufacturing all in the same place.

INTEGRATION. Seamless integration of cables, electronics, and bearing interfaces requires intricate frame shaping and incredibly tight tolerances that just aren’t possible without an in-house facility—which is why no one does integration better than Trek.

INNOvATION. We’ve perfected a long list of Trek-exclusive carbon innovations (our patented OCLV process, BB90, Net Molding, and StepJoint Technology, to name a few), all of which require extraordinary process control and consistency. When we transfer those innovations to our facilities world wide, we bring unprecedented levels of technology to our entire line.

We install our own verification labs at each of our facilities worldwide, and run our own battery of frame tests—not just for safety and durability, but also for ride quality and performance. BB90 / The widest bottom bracket available on a road bike. This Trek-exclusive carbon BB makes the frame lighter, stiffer, and quicker to accelerate.

ELECTRONICS INTEGRATION / Trek’s unique complex surfacing capabilities allow us to mold sensor pockets directly into the frame, eliminating sensor-mount drag and creating the cleanest aesthetic on the market.

FEA / Finite Element Analysis software allows us to test our frame structures under virtual loads so we can optimize carbon tube shapes. For frames built in our US facility, we use composite-laminate FEA to analyze the carbon laminates themselves—an advanced FEA application used primarily in the aerospace industry.

The new Bontrager Anatomic-C handlebar makes hand transitions quicker and safer, leaving the rider more in control. We applied the best aero ideas from automotive and aerospace engineering to create an aerodynamic tube shape that’s nothing short of revolutionary.

/ YAW ExPLAINED Yaw is the measure of crosswind angle. The wind is very seldom directly head-on, so yaw is a critical but often overlooked factor in bicycle aerodynamics.

/ KvF TUBE SHAPE Airfoils are created with a precise ratio of length and width. The optimal combination gives you the least air resistance, and consequently, the fastest speeds. The Kammtail Virtual Foil (KVF) tube shape is unique in bicycles. We started with a super-slippery 5:1 airfoil, then cut off the tail at just the right length to trick the wind into thinking the full foil is still there, creating a super-aero virtual tail.

/ KvF vIRTUAL AIRFOIL Unlike a conventional airfoil, the KVF tube shape retains full aero benefit at yaw. The virtual tail bends to maintain its aero shape in the presence of the most prevalent crosswinds.

/ LEADING EDGE Presenting the least amount of surface area at the front of a bike is crucial. It sets the tone for how the rest of the bike will perform.

The shape of what’s behind the leading edge is equally important. Traditional 3:1 airfoils create a blunt leading edge that pushes against airflow and creates drag when the wind separates from the frame. The KVF truncated 5:1 airfoil allows the wind to slip cleanly along the frame with near zero drag.

The minimal frontal surface area of Speed Concept, combined with its perfect aerodynamic shape, makes the bike slice through the wind effortlessly, so more of the power you apply to the pedals translates directly into speed.
