The Editor’s Letter Only one place to be on Sunday, June 17th – Ditcheat Open Gardens – a chance to be inspired by the green-fingered residents, buy plants, explore bygone days of the village and listen to the champion of ‘No Dig’ gardening, Charles Dowding, who will explain how to let the worms do the work. He will also be ‘draw master’ for the Benefice Draw so remember to get your tickets in (P34). On the 14th Pennard House is hosting its ever-popular ‘Final Night Performances’ following the song writing course, (P22) and on the 23rd there is the chance to enjoy Shakespeare at Lamyatt (P25). Congratulations to Aurelia Channon, worthy winner of the first FTN children’s writing competition – you have a chance to follow the escapades of her very original tooth fairy on page 9. And thanks to all those who have made a donation to the FTN (special mention to the Alhampton Inn who handed over some of their sweepstake). If you haven’t returned your envelope, or got in touch with Lesley on [email protected] to get details on how to do a bank transfer, there is still time. The next issue of the FTN will be a joint July/August one so if you are planning events, or sending in time-sensitive copy/ads, then please make a note of that. Here’s to a balmy June!

Alhampton News No wonder we always talk about the weather in this country – what a variety we have had in the last few weeks! At the moment it has settled back into traditional spring weather but who knows? One result of the recent warmth has been the sudden fantastic growth of every possible weed in the garden. What a pity they are weeds because some of them are really pretty. It has been decided that we are definitely not having a fete this year. Thank you to everyone who supported the idea with offers of help but there really weren’t enough to make it a good one and we decided we would rather give it a rest for a year than end up with a disappointing day. It has been suggested, however, that we should still run the duck race with a BBQ at the pub and, possibly, some music. Also, there was a suggestion that we should have a car boot sale beforehand. This would mean we still have a community event and the chance to make a bit of money for charity. Plans are still underway but look out for details. Incidentally, with the exception of last year’s efforts for the defibrillator, the fete has in recent years raised money for the Air Ambulance. Is everyone still happy to support them or have you another charity you could suggest we might raise money for? I don’t know if this will be out in time but the Morris dancers are visiting the pub on 29th May from 8.00. I hope they get good weather as it will make all the difference. I remember going along to a previous occasion when a troop visited and a friend from the big city declared that it was like being in a film to sit in the sun, drinking cider and watching the dancers. Please let me know if you have any news or events that I can mention in future magazines. I don’t like waffling too much but it’s sometimes hard to find anything much to write about. Those of you who have lived in the village for some time will be sad to hear of the recent death of Maureen Fletcher who used to live at Bakewell House before moving to Castle Cary. She was always full of life with a ready smile – one of those people who made you feel that they were glad to see you even when they were really busy.

St. Dunstan and District Mother's Union was pleased to welcome, on Thursday 10th May in Baltonsborough Church Room, its guest speaker Miss Mary Cryer. Miss Cryer was bursar at Lambeth Palace for ten years from 1980. She gave an interesting account of her time at the Palace and had a most detailed book of events and pictures to show members. Bishop Runcie was 101st Archbishop of Canterbury most of the time that Mary worked there. He lived in a flat in the Palace with his wife. Mary took over mostly secretarial, writing and treasury work and had her own office. She was also Press Secretary and arranged tours on two afternoons a week and tours for important guests, including the Queen. The Archbishop wanted the Palace to be used more. Mrs. Runcie was a gifted musician and she gave concerts in the guard room and reception rooms. Terry Waite had his own office and secretary in the Palace. Mrs. Anne Speirs thanked Mary, whom Anne had known when they were both magistrates in London. Next meeting on Thursday 14th June, when we plan to visit Kilver Court. All members and friends welcome

Ditcheat School

Sporting Opportunities When you think of a village school you might think that there are not many sporting opportunities for the children, simply because of its size. However, in reality, the opposite is true. All of our year groups take part in sports festivals at least once a year held at Ansford Acdemy. Many of our older children take part in sports tournaments, of which there are thirteen each year. Finally, we try to make sure we have regular sports fixtures against many of our neighbouring schools. Ditcheat – Winners

The Tooth Fairy Queen and the King Tiger  Once upon a time there was a tooth fairy. Her name was Trixy. Right, I know you think she’s full of tricks but she is not. She collects your teeth and makes them into fairy decorations. Trixy has purple messy hair and blue eyes. Trixy is my tooth fairy and gives you £1 for every tooth you loose. Trixy told me what the Fairy Queen looks like, she looks like me. She has golden hair like me and she has green eyes like me, that is all I know. So, if you are reading this you are a fairy friend. This means you believe in magic. One day the Fairy Queen was captured. So, Trixy and her friends went to save the fairy queen from being eaten by the King Tiger! They knew where the land was, but it was deep in the sea, but they were very clever. They waved their wands over their heads and pouf they were in their sea suits. They dived into the water and they were swimming to the Tigers land. At last they reached their destination. The sky was as black as night, but they could see the fairy queen in a clam. So they heaved the clam open, but it didn’t open! Then they cam face to face with the KING TIGER! They had a fight but half way through the King Tiger summoned his army. So, the fairies went back to fairyland to get the Queens Royal Guards. Then, after an hour the fairies won the fight and the Royal Guards set the Fairy Queen free. They went home to fairyland and had the most amazing celebration party. The End!

Strolling or Striding around Ditcheat?

What will you do on the August Bank Holiday weekend? Hopefully by then we’ll be enjoying warm summer sunshine and barbecues in the garden after you’ve been out walking with Mendip Ramblers. The dates are

25/26/27th August 2018 and our base this year is in Ditcheat near Shepton Mallet. You may already have their free Walking Festival in your diary – lots of Ramblers do and some come from far afield. But, you don’t have to be a Rambler, you don’t have to be a seasoned walker – you can saunter along on a short walk around the pleasant Somerset countryside. Ditcheat was an ancient settlement, once part of the Glastonbury Abbey estates, and recorded in Doomsday. It has some fine buildings and is well known for its cheese and its racehorses – something for everyone. On each of the three days there will be a choice of four walks ranging from 3 to 12 miles. There will be lovely scenes and well-maintained footpaths and experienced leaders - a lot to admire. At the end all walkers – the strollers and the striders and those in between – will be rewarded with tea and cake in the Village Hall. It’s a bargain offer. All details can be found on the website: www.mendipramblers.co.uk , so check your diaries and come along – locals, visitors, walkers, Ramblers. All are welcome.

Ditcheat Weather – April 2018 April is often a transitional month, where we hope to see the back of the cold of the winter, and look forward to balmy sunny days. Daylight lengthens and the gardens begin to bloom. March this year brought us record lows and a much higher than average number of nights with below zero temperatures. By contrast, this month was mixed, with a number of new April records for my weather station:

Highest April temperature on the 12th (23.1°C) Highest minimum temperature on the 18th (11.8°C at 06:40) Lowest maximum on the 1st (7.9°C at 15:03) The lowest barometric pressure on the 4th (988.73mbar) Highest wind speed on the 15th (19.0 mph) Highest daily wind run on the 17th (222.0 miles) April was a very windy month, the data at the foot of this report will

show that this April recorded almost 1,000 miles of wind run over and above the values for the previous 4 years.

Our first thunder storm occurred on the 4th, it was mostly a distant affair and rainfall, although intense, did not last for long. There were lots of flashes of lightning, but the bulk of the storm was off to the east. I am guessing the low pressure recorded on that day was a trigger. April was not particularly sunny, solar panel output stood at just 71% of the projected value for April. Our worst performing month so far this year. I also look back over the data at this time of the year to see when the first >20°C and last <0.0°C temperatures occur. Last April saw a record early >20°C date of the 9th, this year we exceeded 20°C on the 18th. Still much earlier than normal. Despite March giving us a record low at the beginning of the month, it also gave us the earliest date when the less than zero temps ended. The 21st being the last recorded minus temp of the 2017/18 winter. What will the summer bring? Will I get to wear my shorts a lot? Will there be wine on the terrace? – Who can tell? Especially not me!!!

Gardening The Bank Holiday weekend bought us some fabulous sunshine at last and the garden seems to have taken a deep breath and blossomed, quite literally. Almost overnight plants, vegetables and even flowers have put on growth. Let’s hope we can finally close the door on one of the bleakest winters I can ever remember. By the time you read this, Chelsea Flower Show will have been and gone. It will be interesting to see what trends abound this year. Earlier this year the designer trade journals were predicting outdoor structures, including anything from an outdoor kitchen to a pop-up pergola being the big news this summer. I wonder if this will translate to Chelsea. Softer planting is also predicted with plants being chosen to benefit the environment and encourage wildlife. The inclusion of anything edible is never far away. Talking of which, the trial of herbs Perilla and Stridola is going well. There are now about 25 of each thriving in the greenhouse. Both have a very distinctive aroma and it will be great to start using them in cooking. If anyone fancies a plant for a nominal charge of £1, do get in touch. 860850.

A visit to my wholesale nursery yesterday inspired, as always. Scabiosa cuacasica ‘Perfecta Alba’ caught my eye and found its way into the back of my car!! How does that happen? If you have been preparing your hanging baskets, it should be safe to put them out this month. If you are going to go and buy them, don’t be tempted by those that are full of colour, rummage around and look for those with plenty of flower buds that will produce a good show in the coming weeks.

Reading Monty Don’s wonderful book ‘Down To Earth’ reminds me that it is a really good idea to take photos of the herbaceous borders throughout the year. The memory can play tricks and it so easy to forget where the bulbs were and where the gaps are. Take note and in the interim fill with an annual such as Cosmos which flowers for months and right into autumn.

The glass in the greenhouse will need shading to prevent it over heating. If it gets really hot, it is a good idea to soak the floor with water, to create a cooling effect and raise humidity. The vegetable patch should start providing some crops, such as broad beans, turnips, peas, early cabbages, carrots, lettuce and early potatoes to mention just a few. The Cabbage White butterflies are likely to come out in force and decimate brassica crops. It is worth covering in insect-proof mesh, such as ’Wondermesh’ or ‘Enviromesh’. Herbaceous borders will come into their own from now until the autumn. A good rule of thumb is to pick off flowers once they have gone over. This encourages new growth and will extend the flowering period. A plant that brings colour and a wonderful scent into later summer is Actaea. It used to be called Cimicifuga. Two of the most popular are Actaea simplex ‘Atropurpurea’ and ‘Brunette’. They have purple, ferny foliage with tall racemes of whitish flowers which smell delicious. Another plus is that they can tolerate shade. If you find this plant difficult to find, let me know as my wholesale suppliers always have supplies.

The Natural World I’ve tended to be a bit negative in recent articles, so I’m not going to write about plastic, mainly because everybody else is saving me the trouble. Looking back on previous notes to check what I have and haven’t covered, I seem to have concentrated a lot on insects, so time for a complete change. The WWF Living Planet report of 2016 came up with some pretty astounding figures. The decline in total numbers of vertebrates worldwide since 1970 is amazing. They have decreased by a frightening 58%, more than half. Worst hit of all, is not bird or marine life; unbelievably 81% of all freshwater creatures on the planet have disappeared in the last half century. What goes on in our freshwater then? As a child, I spent a lot of my spare time dabbling in the Bye Brook, which runs through Box in Wiltshire, and finally joins the Avon at Bathford.

We were privileged to find freshwater British crayfish, which have now largely been ousted by the American signal crayfish, Miller’s thumb fish, Stone loaches and lamperns. Lamperns, or river lamprey are a class of eel found in many British rivers and were considered a great delicacy. King Henry I is said to have died from a surfeit of lampreys, and King John fined the City of Gloucester the equivalent of £250,000 for not delivering his Christmas lamprey pie. These

strange looking creatures don’t have conventional gill flaps, but a row of 7 spiracles on each side, and a disc shaped mouth with teeth around the rim. They feed rather gruesomely, by latching onto other fish, using their ‘lips’ as a suction pad, and grinding away with teeth and tongue, to remove blood and other fluids from their host - charming! There are some bizarre creatures beneath the surfaces of our ponds and streams. The aforementioned Miller’s thumb, or bull head is another. Never more than around three inches long, these fish are mottled brown, which acts as an excellent camouflage, but vary enormously. They have an enormous head which seems totally out of proportion, and the body consequently tapers dramatically to the tail. As kids we used to pride ourselves on the variety we had caught. Our method was simple – but worked. We lifted a stone and if one was skulking underneath, we placed a jam jar behind it, and then put our hand in front of the

unsuspecting fish. Startled by the hand, it would try to escape backwards and hurtle into the waiting jam jar. We employed the same tactic on freshwater crayfish, not realising that we were catching a delicacy. Freshwater crayfish tails are very sought after, although the American interloper (no, not that one) is probably what you will be served these days.

About half a mile from the house was a tunnel providing agricultural access beneath the Great Western Railway, but there was a raised concrete path to prevent you having to wade through the inevitable mud, hence its local name of Dirty Arch. At the Box end of Dirty Arch was a ditch which led back to the brook and here we could find beautiful smooth newts. Never more than 3 inches long again, these creatures never failed to thrill. Like small wet (not slimy) lizards, they would sit absolutely still when picked up, yet if they caught a glimpse of you from their watery domain, they were gone in a flash. One other wonder awaited us in the ditch. Even though it was only 50 yards back to the brook, it was full of life, and the main attraction for me was sticklebacks. They are tiny fish with no scales, and there are several species in Europe, but their heritage is strange, in that they are related to the marine sea horse. The best-known species is the three-spined variety. Their dorsal fins have protruding spines which make them unattractive food, to most, but kingfishers nimbly turn them in their beaks, so the spines are flattened and then gollup them down. They have some endearing features which first attracted me to them. During the mating season, the underside of male takes on a ruddy hue prior to the building of a nest, into which he encourages a female. When the eggs hatch, it’s him who looks after the babies. Just think – 81% of all that has disappeared.

Lily’s Summer Message Hello again everyone, I thought it was time to send you another message after a ‘paws’ of some months. To be honest I haven’t been very well, and thanks to all of you who enquired after my health. I have been to the Langford Vets Hospital several times and they discovered I had arthritic inflammation in my leg joints, so I am now on high dose steroids which make me very hungry and thirsty. But they seem to be working a treat and I feel much better, though they are going to do some further tests on my left hind leg where the ligaments might have stretched. Anyway my appetite is right back again and I feel so much better. You know pain can be very debilitating for both animals and humans. In the Letter of James we read how if someone is ill they should call for the elders who will anoint and pray. If you are really down sometimes you can’t do anything for yourself however much you might want to. I went into the hospital the day after my 9th birthday feeling more like 90! But after a few days I was almost like a young dog although I know I am really middle aged. Think about healing – it’s important. And rest and relaxation are important as well. My folks are just off to Tuscany for a week, but I have a very nice lady called Rosie who’s coming to stay and look after me. Sometimes you can enjoy a ‘staycation’ just as much. And I can recommend biscuits as well as cheese to make you feel good. Dictated to Graham, because I can’t really manage the keyboard!

East Pennard and District Royal British Legion

Come on now, be honest, who read last month’s RBL article and picked up on the use of the word “segue”? I bet you thought “that’s much too clever a word for Jon Dickens to use”! And you would have been right of course; when I read the article again in the FTN I had to go and look it up. That’s the trouble with having an intelligent editor, you can always tell when it’s not the original author.

On to more serious things. You must have been inundated with mail and emails, as I have, about data protection - how the rules are changing and how you must give permission for firms and organisations to hold your data so they can continue to correspond with you. The Legion is no different and will be going through a similar process. At Branch level, some of these dilemmas have been taken out of our hands. We no longer retain a copy of your membership application form; there is only the original copy which you fill out and that should be sent direct to the membership office. Although, to be truthful, I tend to send the applications that I have instigated to the County Secretary for her to feed into the membership system. She has the technology to track forms and can chase up any snags very quickly. We have had a couple of instances when the forms sent to the membership office appear not to have been processed as quickly as they should have been. We no longer hold paper copies of our membership list. It is all done on-line, protected with passwords as you would expect and only our Chairman and myself have access to it. Again, to be truthful, the Chairman tends not to interfere with membership issues, so it’s down to yours truly if something goes wrong. The issue of phone numbers and email addresses of branch members is slightly more tricky to fit in to the scheme of things. Legion emails that are sent to me, which concern the branch, need to be distributed to committee members, and so I do retain their contact details. Similarly, I do keep contact details of members who regularly support our functions so that I can keep them up to date with things such as the quiz night. I don’t believe that to be unreasonable. However, if any member objects to the way we do things and wishes to be removed from our data base, then please do get in touch with me and advise me of your concerns. Moving swiftly on (not quite the right time to slip in a “segue” for good luck), do you remember quite a few months ago, we sent £1000.00 down to Dunkirk Memorial House towards their mini bus appeal? Well, after many delays they have at last got the new bus and are holding a small dedication “do” at DMH on

Page 29: TRAVELLERS REST - FOSSE TRINITY NEWS 2018jun.pdf · Sutton, Nr Ditcheat, Shepton Mallet, Somerset BA4 6QF Opening hours Mon-Sat: 7.30am to 6.30pm For Tool Hire & Repairs. Tel 01749

Thursday 31st of May and we have been invited to send a representative, I suppose as a recognition of our donation. Unfortunately, none of the committee members are available to attend. By the time you receive this magazine, the event will probably have come and gone, but you need to know that we were invited. In the meantime we will asking around to see if any member is available to go and represent the branch. Segue another invitation from Dunkirk Memorial House. They have issued a general invitation to join them at their WW1 “Thank You” Day which is being held on Saturday the 7th 2018, between 10am and 4pm. They seem to have gone to a lot of trouble to organise some attractions, which include: Band of the Devon and Somerset Fire & Rescue Service Military Wives Choir (I don’t know which one) Coming Home Choir: Dog Agility Display: Children’s Area WW1 Field Hospital and Troops: WW1 Assault Course Vintage Vehicles and Farming Equipment: Wellington Silver Band Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Dakota Fly Past Admission is by a donation on the gate and you have to follow the directions for parking. It will be worth going just to see the Dakota fly past, after all, it is the 100th anniversary of the RAF this year; have I mentioned that before??? If you don’t know anything about DMH, it is a Legion-run residential home (self-funding) with nursing facilities and a separate dementia wing, which I believe supports up to 30 people. Believe you me, it is one of the “flag ships” of the Legion. Is there anybody out there who does not know where DMH is situated? It is on the Minehead Road at Bishops Lydeard, TA4 3BT. Those of you who frequent the farm shop in Ditcheat might be inclined to glance at the notice board every now and again, in which case you might have noticed a new Legion poster which has been carefully pinned up….using 6 pins no less. It is a poster asking for volunteers to support the Legion, in particular, in the role of caseworker. “Yes”, there is still a shortage of caseworkers in Somerset, and “no”, we haven’t had anybody from the local area expressing any interest. Maybe you can make a difference. There is no meeting in June; our next meeting is on Tuesday 3rd July 2018, 2pm at Charlie’s.

Memories of Bygone Ditcheat on Sunday 17th June Those who missed the exhibition of postcards, pictures and memorabilia of byegone Ditcheat that was part of last year's All Our Yesterdays staged at Ditcheat Priory need not despair. There will be another opportunity to see it at the Ditcheat Open Gardens day on Sunday 17th June from 1.00pm, so put the date in your diary. The exhibition, held in the Ditcheat Church Rooms, will include reproductions of picture postcards by Higdon and Hillard, two of the most significant of local photographers in the Edwardian period, as well as maps, handwritten copies of 18th and 19th century sermons preached in St Mary's Church, and various other items of local significance. If you feel that you have anything of interest which could be used in the exhibition, please ring either Stephen on 830538 or Eleanor on 860337. We would be delighted to hear from you.

Open Gardens in Ditcheat with illustrated talk by Charles Dowding

The residents of Ditcheat are delighted to be hosting an ‘Open Gardens’ Event on the afternoon of Sunday 17th June.

Charles Dowding, the innovator of the concept of ‘No Dig’ organic gardening will be giving an illustrated talk on how to have healthy soil and enjoy easier harvests. Charles will explain how to make, buy and use composts of different kinds; how to clear perennial weeds; and how to maintain the plot – all with no back- breaking digging! A variety of size and style of gardens will be open and plants will be ‘for sale’ in the centre of the village. There will, of course, be delicious home-made cakes and refreshments on offer. Proceeds from the event will be shared between the Jubilee Village Hall and Friends of Haddon Wood.

A combined ticket to include the talk and all open gardens costs £10. Entry to the talk only is £6. Gardens only tickets cost £5. Further details at www.ditcheatvillagehall.org.uk.

Dorothy House 5k Fun Run

This year Dorothy House’s 5k fun run takes place on Saturday 14th July at a new venue - the Royal Bath and West Showground near Shepton Mallet.  Entrants will run, walk, skip or dance twice around a 2.5k route filled with huge clouds of rainbow-coloured foam so this year’s runners

or walkers will enjoy double the bubbles as they pass through four bubble stations twice during their two laps. Before the start, the Bubble Village will be packed with entertainment with plenty of fun for participants and spectators alike. There is a warm up routine planned plus live entertainment, a selfie booth, children’s activities, food and drink stalls and a colourful accessories stall to jazz up your outfit. The Bubble Rush is a family event with no age restrictions and the child-friendly route is suitable for pushchairs, prams and wheelchairs. It is not a race; the aim is for everyone to pass the finish line covered in coloured bubbles and smiling! To join in the fun visit www.dottybubblerush.org.uk

The Wildlife Group Update Share a close encounter with wildlife: I was sent this beautiful nest to identify

by Pippa. I think it is a Wren’s nest, they like being in buildings and use moss. Is there anyone who can confirm which bird made it? Wildlife Group Swallow survey results: Here are the results from the 2017 Swallow survey, which follows on from last month’s article on House Martins and Swallows. Swallow Report: Firstly, a big thank you to all the participants who, year-on-year, take an interest in their Swallows so that we can record what actually happens during a breeding season. We have had a very exciting new member who has 23 nests in one workshop! He puts such a healthy population down to the lovely old-fashioned meadows surrounding the workshop and in spite of the hammering and banging that goes on in the workshop, the birds have somewhere to nest that is safe from predators. For this year I have excluded this new member’s data, because the numbers will distort the finding of the survey. A rewarding number of returners came back to our shores, 47 and, the upward increase continued in 2017 by 10 extra pairs returning to nest and 3 pairs not returning. There was a pleasing 2 pairs returning to historic sites and again sadly, one site losing its Swallows. The number of broods that Swallows have during a season are a good indicator of how good a breeding year we have had, see chart below: (a good year) 2014 2015 2016 2017 Zero broods 1 3 0 3 One brood 7 24 12 9 Two broods 27 10 23 34 Three broods 4 1 0 1

The spread in arrival dates was: 06.04.17 to 21.05.17 and departure dates were between: 17.08.17 and 03.10.17 which was a much wider spread than 2016. Two different people found dead adults near nesting sites and Sparrow Hawks continue to be a real problem for the Swallows and House Martins.

Photo Competition winner for May: The winner is Alex Gould with: Green dock beetle, Gastrophysa viridula

House Martin report: Sadly, there were 4 fewer pairs returning to nest in 2017 than in 2016. House Martin Broods: 2015 2016 2017 Zero Broods 0 6 1 One brood 1 8 6 Two broods 28 14 13 Three broods 0 0 5

Tips: June is a month where the Spring flowering lawn is cut down (mid month) and the Summer flowering meadow is allowed to grow (early in June). Dead heading nectar plants (e.g. Single flowered Roses and some bedding plants like geraniums) extends the season of flowering, encouraging more pollinators.

Black Dog Rescue 2nd May 2018 My thanks to the kind person(s) who rescued "Buddy" when he went missing from my home in Pylle. As he was a visitor, he didn't know the way back, and strayed on to the A37 (not wise!). Fortunately, he was found before he could come to harm, and was taken to the Castle Cary Vets, and was happily re-united with his owner later that day. If you would like to call me on the number below, I can thank you in person.
