las buitreras fishing lodge

After this season I think it’s clearer than ever before. If possible, use single-hand rods and keep wading to aminimum. The fish are there, but splashing a long two-hand line on the surface nearly guarantees they will notbite. This is as technical as it gets, but at the same timequite easy! The cast does not need to be so long, onlyquiet and controlled. Keep contact with the fly and movethe fly, wade as little as possible and it will happen!

We have been very spoiled using only certain sectionsof our available water. Tomas Ögren and I spent a weekfishing new areas from both sides of the river with greatsuccess. There’s still a lot of water to be discovered undervarying conditions. How many world class stretches offishing can say that?

The season was exciting with all the big fish and asalways the lodge functioned perfectly under the supervi-sion of camp manager Claudio Martin.

in length and has its origin in the Southern Andes with two pristine and verybeautifulstreams, the Penitente and the Ruebens. Winding its way through the wild Patagonian landscape it emerges into thesurprisingly moun-tainous area that encompasses the unique Las Buitreras beats, some 40kms from the river mouth. The flood plain that liesbetween theseoutcrops teems with birdlife, alongside large numbers of rheas, silver foxes, horses, hares, flamingos and guanacos.

A trip to Rio Gallegos River offers the adventurous angler the opportunity to pit his skills against the explosive searunning trouts of

Patagonia. These fish can reach sizes of 25lbs and over and will reward the angler with arm wrenching takes and blisteringruns, inter-spersed with regular acrobatic displays.

Loop’s Las Buitreras lodge is home to the most prolific beats on the Rio Gallegos, consisting of over 40kms of both sidesprivate watercomprising over 50 named pools. The fishing is exciting and varied with pools ranging from deep stony runs to cut banksand streamyshingle flats. Relatively shallow, the river makes for easy wading, obviating the need for fast sinking lines and creating anexciting andchallenging fishing environment. It is this variety in combination with the visually inspiring mountainous outcrops thatmakes this part ofthe Rio Gallegos quite simply one of the most spectacular stretches of fly fishing water in Patagonia.

Sometimes explosive, always challenging, fishing for sea trout requires a level of skill, stealth and understanding thatcan frustrate

The lake is nothing else than a biological sensation and contains millions uponmillions of fresh water shrimp (krill, scuds). The fish grow to huge sizes eatingonly the protein-enriched shrimps all year around. This is simply the most Ome-ga-3 fat fish you have ever seen. Yes, it’s possible to eat and taste during the stay.

We have also seen that the rainbows are making their way into the smallstream (the only stream in the lake) to spawn nearly all months of the year, as longas the river has water. All we can gather is that the vast numbers of rainbows hascreated its own ecological system and its unending food source has pushed thesefish to   year-around-spawners  , depending on water level in the small stream thatfeeds the lake by the Loop River camp.

Arriving at Jurassic Lake you will quickly realize just how far removed you arefrom the real world, as the shear vastness of this secluded country is beyondbelief. The large lake is roughly 20 km by 15km, situated approx. 1000m oversea level, and looks more like a saltwater body of water with its crystal clear bluewater and channels, corals and shelves.

Our first exploratory trip had us casting into this huge body of water with littleto no expectations. After being broke off a half dozen times we quickly realizedthere was something strange going on here. These huge fish are much, muchmore then just abnormally large, as they are pound for pound one of the strongest fish we have ever seen. The bloodcurdling runs areonly interrupted by jumps that often involve leaps far above your head. Do not put your hands anywhere near your reelhandle, as you willsurely risk loosing some skin or even break a finger.

from LasBuitrerasand the flight back to Buenos Aires will be fromCala-fate which takes approximately 7 hrs from thecamp. The drive is through the wildest stretches ofPatagoniaand offers many chances to see and take photosof allwild animals and beautiful nature, and with a bitofluck you might even see a wild puma. But be

Please ensure your baggage carries the contact details of our Argentinean Operations officer:

This will ensure that lost baggage can be redirected to us.

Pack light, warm and windproof clothing. Most of the fishing occurs in the Argentine summer, but at parallel 53 south, thedays can bechilly, particularly when the wind blows! Those visiting us in the late season can count on cold mornings and evenings.Windbloc andWindstopper fleece products are very good and when combined with breathable waders and jacket, offer superiorprotection that willkeep you warm and comfortable all day. Prepare to dress in layers. The sun is intense because the ozone layer is thin in thispart of theworld and you may encounter very warm weather as well. Tropical  flats clothing  in neutral colors can be worn toadvantage underwarmer outer layers. Remember your sunscreen and polarized sunglasses!

Argentina is a wonderful country and we are often asked for additional programmes to enhance our guests’ experience.Aside of theJurassic Lake add on to Buitreras program, we have also the following recommendations:

Everyone that has visited Las Buitreras knows that our former Lodge Manager Martina McNamara is one of the people thathas made Buit-reras the  magic  place it is. Martina is also a teacher in the University for Wild Life Management and we know that nobodywill take careof you better than Martina. Programs can be customized to guests, why not non fishing guests in Buitreras, specificationsand for examplecould include: Monte Leon National Park, Los Glacieres National Park, Stag River and more.

around 10 lb, with the biggestlanded so far at 120cm long. We have seen, and lost, evenbigger ones. Is there any other place like Loop JurassicRiver Camp in the world? We don´ t think so!

We don’t count fish at Jurassic Lake, as it is not impor-tant, but let us at least say there is enough fish to keep youbusy the whole day. For those who love a real challengethere is some great shallow water sight fishing to be hadalong the shorelines. It is not uncommon to see pods ofgiant fish cruising the edges in search of food that tries toescape. It is also fun to take a smaller rod up the creek, forsome dry fly fishing, mainly in Nov-mid Jan.

to be the most effective thus far, withblack, purple, red, white and yellow all working fine. Thereal secret is to have several different patterns and a lotof each. Use strong hooks only. Bring along some scudpatterns for sightfishing and an assortment of dry flies and nymphs as well.

We have also, when weather permits, used 9’ # 5 rods with floating lines, dries and nymphs with big success. Real fun,not easy to land

them though. Whatever fly or line used – the key is to fish the fly slow, real slow, since these fish are not used to chase thefood. Their eat-ing behavior is more like swimming with mouth open zipping in the food.

For the lake a are the tools of choice. Loop Opti Coast rod with hi-dense core (handlesthe windbetter) Loop Multi lines is a safe setup. A high quality reel with a good dragsystem ishighly recommended and your reels should have at least 100 yards of backing on them. We recommend, of course, EvotecG4, Multior Opti Runner reels. If you like the sound of screaming reels Loop Classic is a good choice. All these reels will handle thetough   sand winds and water since they are properly sealed and have hi-quality bearings and shafts. Floating, intermediate and sinking

This is the spawning season and normally the river has sufficient water and is virtually full offish with a mixof colored fish and fresh silver from the lake. There is huge   traffic  in the bay outside the camp; here also is a mix ofcolored fish andfresh torpedoes. This period it is possible to catch more wild and bigger rainbows than anywhere else on the planet. 50 fishin a day isnormal with records well above 50 fish per day. If you think it is too many you just walk 100 meters to next bay where youcan sight fishfor the odd big bright specimens, this goes for the whole lake, and maybe catch 5-10 fish in a good day.

This period is colder with the bay full of fish yet again. During this period they are fatter and most are chrometrains thatwill empty your reel – fast! This period can be a bit cold but fantastic!

This is high summer and after 4 seasons we can now see the pattern with fishmainly cruisingaround out in the lake. If the wind presses colder water to the bay there can be some fantastic evening and mornings. Thisperiod is defi-nitely slower compared to Jurassic River normal standards, but if compared with other wild rainbow fisheries it is still hardto beat. Full

Small nymphs are also usedregularly when thetrout become very selective. Doubles are fine, but please leave the trebles at home. Most of the fishing requires you to stripthe fly.

The lodge I can only describe as fabu-lous along with the food they servedthere. The accommodation was first classbearing in mind we were in the middle ofnowhere.

Then there was the fishing. What can onesay after being lucky enough to catch notone fish of a lifetime but two. I neverthought for a moment that I would actu-ally catch a 19 and 21 lb sea trout.

There was so much to love about the fishingnot just the fish themselves but the scen-ery and wildlife amongst which you fishedfor these magnificent creatures.

Then lastly there were the Guides.Thesemen were absolutely fantastic and ablyled by Claudio.Their enthusiasm and genuine love of fish-ing was infectious, and would do every-thing within their power to help makethis a truly unique experience.

I believe that more people should experi-ence this adventure to atruly wild and windswept part of Argen-tina. Mike Humphries

Overlooking the scenic Chimehuin River, Chime Lodge (pronounced Chee-may) is ideally located with excellentaccess to the greatest diversity of trout water in Northern Patagonia. Right from our doorstep we access the trophy troutChimehuin River, and we are not more than 45 minutes away from miles and miles of trout rich waters including theMalleo, Collon Cura and Alumine Rivers plus the large trout- producing Tromen, Epulafquen, Huechulafquen,Curruhe and Verde Lakes.

These are the waters that put Patagonia on the fly fishing map of the world.  Each river or lake has its own character, andit is right here where you can catch the trout of a lifetime.Brown, rainbow, brook trout and landlocked salmon thrive in our waters and readily take flies. To top off your day youwill be welcomed home by the family-style atmosphere of the lodge and treated to excellent cooking, washed down withArgentina's renowned wines.

Page 26: travel catalog

The fabled Chimehuin River is the most famous of all Patagonian rivers and home of endless stories of the monster troutthat live in its productive waters.

The Chimehuin is born on Lake Huechulafquen and flows for 40 trout rich kilometers until it meets Collon Cura River.

The Chimehuin, also referred as the Cathedral of Patagonia Fly fishing is the place where fly fishing in Patagoniabegun.

Made famous by Joe Brooks and other fly fishing gods during the 60 s, the Chimehuin put Patagonia on the flyfishing maps of the world.

The mythical mouth or Boca gather fishermen from all around the world to catch the gigantic trout that every yearmigrates from the lake to the river to spawn.

The Chimehuin is very productive with all fly fishing techniques be it dry, nymph or streamer and every corner maygive you the fish of a lifetime.

We can float right from the Lodge or drive and wade the many productive pools the Chimehuin has to offer.

Page 27: travel catalog

About 20 km from Chime Lodge you ll reach the mid reaches of the Malleo River.  Regarded as one of the top 5 riversin Patagonia, the Malleo is born on the very productive Lake Tromen on the northern foothills of Lanin Volcano.    Theupper parts of this river are not easy o fish due to heavily dense vegetation and steep gradient.  Although difficult to fishand moody, this upper part is home of some large resident fish and migratory rainbow and brown trout.

We will concentrate on the lower reaches until its confluence with the Alumine River; on the Mapuche IndianReservation; where it is easily waded, has abundant hatches throughout the season and holds large numbers of rainbowand brown trout.

It is a dry fly paradise!  You can fish all day long different pools and runs sight fishing for the largest trout of the pod.

It is also a river that will reward the streamer fishermen with large brown trout, especially during low light conditions.

Page 28: travel catalog

The super productive Collon Cura River is born from the union of the Chimehuin and Catan Lil Rivers and flows forabout 70 km until it reaches the Piedra del Aguila Reservoir.

Besides the undisputed quality of the fishing, this is the place where its possible to see the unique wildlife fromPatagonia.  Just look up and you ll see condors, eagles, ducks, falcons and raptors.  Look to the banks and you mayspot red deer, red and grey foxes, guanacos, rheas, otters and more.

Due to the proximity to the reservoir, it s a great river to Spey cast large streamers in search of large migratory browntrout (landlocked version of Rio Grande s sea run browns), especially early and late in the season.

For the angler who s done it all and wants to catch that extra fish there are Percas and Pejerrey Patagonico inabundance, especially during warm summer days.

Page 29: travel catalog

The Alumine river is born in the homonymous lake and flows for 160 trout infested waters until it meets the Catan LilRiver and forms the Collon Cura.

The most productive stretch is downstream from Pilo Lil all the way to Catan Lil.  This is the place most guides call the fish factory were large concentration of trout feed on well marked lanes or below the ever present willows thatcover its banks.

It is not uncommon to hook 50 + fish on a day s float, with impressive average size fish that will attack a well placeddry fly.  Even though you may fish dries and nymphs all day long for 18 fish, swinging a streamer deep into somepools may give you some trout measured in lbs not inches.  Hook in and hang on!

This is also the place where you will hook and land our native fish called Perca.

The stretch from Pilo Lil to its confluence with the Malleo is the place we choose for our multi day float trip.

Page 30: travel catalog

When the Meliquina and Filo Hua Hum rivers merge they create the Caleufu River which flows for 40 miles beforedraining on the Collon Cura River (now Alicura Reservoir).

It is floatable from opening day until early January depending on snowmelt and rains.

It is an excellent river for streamers (early season) to dry flies and nymphs.

Ask your guide when the "minnow hatch" occurs for some epic fishing in the lower reaches.

Page 31: travel catalog

During certain times of the season we may choose to fish other streams.  There are many tributaries (Quilquihue,Curruhue, and Quemquemtreu just to name a few) to the previously mentioned rivers that fish really well at one point oranother.

These smaller streams are an excellent choice for the wading angler who wants to fish light line rods (1 to 4 wt) for lotsof hungry small to medium sized trout or landlocked salmon.

Bamboo rod aficionados will find in these streams their wildest dreams.  If small water is what you want these are thestreams of your dreams.

BIENVENIDOS

You will soon be on your way to Argentina, changing seasons in a single day of travel from winter in the United States to summer in SouthAmerica. There is far more than warm weather awaiting you in Patagonia. You will fish some of the world s best trout streams: theChimehuin, Malleo, Collon Cura, Alumine and others.  And you will be in the very capable hands of our experienced lodge staff and fishingguides.

The lodge is located on the banks of the Chimehuin River , near the famous Boca or mouth of the river where it drains from LakeHuechulafquen.   Chimehuin means land of the Chime (pronounced Chee-may ), who according to legend are spirits or creatureswho protect the river and the region.  Chime Lodge has embraced this spirit in its vision for conservation in Patagonia.  We also sponsoreducation for our neighbors through our Mapuche guide school.

Once your arrive, the ever-present and spectacular natural beauty, including the rivers, the lagoons, the sky, the forests, the wild flowers and theprairies will overwhelm your senses. There s abundant wildlife too, and you may see Condors, Guanacos, Rheas, ducks, storks, chajas, parrotsand wild geese - just to name a few of the species. You will be wined and dined in the Argentine style, enjoying the famous homegrown beef, flavorful fruits and vegetables and the very fine wines.

You may find, however, that the best part of the trip is the new friends you will make in Argentina.

The Argentine people live their lives at a slower pace than North Americans do, which takes some getting used to, but once you make theadjustment you will like it. The day starts a little later and ends later. You generally won t begin fishing until 9.30 or 10 am. There s no needto rush to the rivers as you should have them pretty much to yourself, and the action frequently accelerates as the sun warms our coldwaterfisheries. You will fish until the early evening most days, some 8 or more hours on the water.

In the pages that follow we provide useful information about Buenos Aires, Junin de los Andes, Patagonia, the Lodge and other activities such asriding, hiking, sightseeing and shopping. The Patagonia region of Argentina provides an abundance of marvelous opportunities for the travelerand you will experience many of them. You are likely to react as we have and be planning your next trip before this first one comes to an end.

Arrival in Buenos Aires from the United States

Your international flight typically will arrive in Buenos Aires between 6 and 10 am.  All international flights arrive in Buenos Aires at EzeizaInternational Airport (the airport's official name is "Ministro Pistarini", code EZE), which is about 40 minutes driving time from downtown.(Note that there is another airport in Buenos Aires for domestic travel:  Aeroparque Airport (code: AEP).  Flights to Patagonia and back toBuenos Aires orginate at Aeroparque as described further below.)

Upon landing at Ezeiza on your initial arrival into Argentina you will go through immigration. The process is easy - just have your passport andimmigration document (which you will fill out on the airplane before you land) ready for the official as you approach the counter. Becauseseveral flights from the United States can arrive at the same time, there may be some delay going through immigration.

The next step is to retrieve your luggage from the carousels. There will be rental carts nearby and the machines accept dollar bills and creditcards. Once you have your bags you will go through customs. We've never been stopped or had our bags searched but it's possible that this couldhappen to you. Chances are that they will just wave you through. Just outside customs you will enter a small area where you can makearrangements for transportation to the downtown and hotels if you have not done so already.  To ease your transfers, we suggest making areservation in advance through:

Travel from Buenos Aires to Patagonia

Chapelco Airport (code CPC) in San Martin de los Andes is the closest airport serving Chime Lodge.  Aerolineas Argentinas(www.aerolineas.com.ar) runs regular commercial flights from Aeroparque Airport in Buenos Aires to Chapelco Airport and back.  They flyevery Sunday and Wednesday and this flight is usually sold out way in advance so we suggest you book this flight as soon as you have decidedto fish at Chime Lodge.

You can book directly on-line with Aerolineas Argentinas www.aerolineas.com.ar

Or call their Miami office (305) 648-4120 and ask for Mabel Rodriguez or Ivan MarinIt is also possible to fly from Buenos Aires in or out of the city of Bariloche (Code BRC) in Patagonia, but this is further south and requires alonger drive to and from Chime Lodge and you will incur in transfer costs.  Please make sure that you notify us well in advance of your arrivaltime and flight so that we can arrange to meet you at Chapelco Airport or wherever you plan to land in Patagonia.

Speaking the language

Argentina is a Spanish speaking country, but you need not worry if you don t speak the language. Most of the people you come into contactwith will speak some to very good English, starting with the transfer guide who will meet you upon arrival at Ezeiza Airport.

Page 36: travel catalog

Currency and Paying for ThingsThe currency in Argentina is the peso and the exchange rate with the U.S. dollar is currently about 4.2 to 1.  We recommend you take as muchU.S. currency with you as you are comfortable carrying.  You will find that smaller denomination bills are easier to spend; take $5, $10, and $20bills as well as $50 and $100 bills.

You will have access to ATMs in Argentina that dispense pesos and you'll be able to charge things to your credit card when shopping or eatingat a restaurant. You might also consider taking along your checkbook. Traveler's checks are not recommended since they generally must betaken to a bank to be cashed and the fee is quite high.

Water

Although water is treated in the hotels and restaurants, it is probably better not to drink the tap water. It is customary in restaurants to orderbottled mineral water.  Most Argentines drink it con gas or sparkling water, but you can order it without carbonation:   sin gas is thephrase to use.  You can buy bottled water in kiosks on the street or from grocery stores to take with you while sightseeing.

We have filtered water at Chime Lodge you can drink without worries.

ShotsYou do not need to get any shots prior to traveling in Argentina.Electricity

Argentina uses 220 volts instead of 110 volts as in the U.S.  If you plan to use a small appliance like an electric razor, you will need to purchasea converter before leaving home to convert the electricity from 220 to 110 voltages. Otherwise, you will quickly overheat the appliance.  Youwill also need some adapter plugs as the outlets are not the same as ours.  There are plugs available at Chime Lodge, but you may need one ifstaying in Buenos Aires.

Weather

Weather conditions should be similar to what they are in Montana in mid July, which means mostly warm and dry in both Buenos Aires andNorthern Argentina. In the middle of our summer, be sure to have t-shirts and shorts.  Come prepared for the possibility of the oppositeconditions as well. Bring a high-quality rain shell and some warm clothes - turtlenecks, long-sleeved shirts and fleeces work well.  Layering isthe best approach.  A pair of hiking boots is a good idea, too.  It may be colder later, especially later in the afternoon and early evening.

Food and DrinkFood and wine in Argentina are excellent.  Meat is served at lunch and dinner with potatoes ( papas fritas are French fries) and salads whichare very good.  Try ensalada mixta for a green salad with tomatoes and onions.

When ordering a steak look for bife de chorizo on the menu if you want a New York cut and bife de lomo if you want a filet.

Wine is vino de mesa (table wine) or vino fino (served by the bottle).  The waiter will ask which you prefer and then the kind:   vinotinto (red) or vino blanco, (white). Argentine wine is from vineyards near Mendoza and is quite inexpensive and good. The best knowntype of Argentine wine is the Malbec, which is a medium-bodied red.   Cerveza is beer.

Coffee is also very good in Argentina and is served espresso style in demitasse cups or with milk, café con leche.   A doble meanscoffee in a big cup.  Tea is also available.  Coffee is often served with medialunas, which means croissants.

Chime Lodge offers a mix of Argentine and Italian cuisine, all poured with great Argentine wines.  There is a different menu offered each dayand if you have special food needs, please let us know well in advance.

Page 37: travel catalog

ShoppingShopping hours in Argentina are usually 9 or 10 am. to noon or 1 pm when stores close for the siesta.  Shops open again around 4 or 5 pm until8 pm.  Hours are not consistent and you may find that your favorite shop is closed when you want to buy something at the last minute.Argentina uses the 24-hour clock, e.g. 16:30 is 4:30 pm.

Different items are sold in different kinds of stores: cosmetics in the perfumeria, drugs in the farmacia, bread and cookies in the panaderia and film or memory cards in numerous photo stores.  There are supermercados which sell a variety of goods, but you often needto go to a specialty store to find certain items.  It is sometimes difficult to buy over the counter drugs such as Advil, Tylenol or Sudafed; bring asupply with you and, of course, bring your own prescription drugs.

Keeping in Touch with HomeIn Buenos Aires you can make long distance calls from your hotel or from phone booths on the street.  To use the booths, you will need a phonecard available at the kiosks or a supply of coins.  In the smaller towns of Patagonia it is more common to see storefront telephone centers wherethere will be a number of phone booths and these are very inexpensive.  An attendant assigns you a booth, which has a meter showing the timeand cost of your call. You then pay the attendant.  Look for Telefonica or Locutoria centers throughout Argentina.   To make calls fromArgentina to the United States you must dial 001 area code phone number.

Your mobile phone and blackberry or other paging service may work in Buenos Aires and parts of Patagonia, but you should check with yourservice provider in advance.  Chime Lodge will have regular phone availability for international calls at an extra cost.

Tackle Shop and Fly-Tying BenchThe Lodge maintains a limited tackle shop with a selection of fishing accessories, Chime Lodge apparel, sun block and miscellaneous items.  Inaddition, we have a fly-tying bench for your use.  Given the limitless abundance of fishing equipment available in North America, anglersgenerally should plan to bring their own tackle and flies.  The town of Junin de los Andes also has a few small tackle shops.  Please consult theChime Lodge website or call us if you have questions about what to bring.  For flies, we would recommend a typical trout fly selection of dry flyattractors (hoppers and Chernobyl ants in sizes 8 to 10; and stimulators, humpies and wulfs in sizes 10 to 12); bead-head nymphs in sizes 14 to20, tan and olive caddis patterns in sizes 14 to 16; mayfly parachutes, emergers and cripples in sizes 14 to 20); and a selection of streamers(conehead woolly buggers, matukas, muddler minnows and bunny leeches).  We will have some local favorites, including green inchworm andpancora crab patterns available for purchase.
