How to use this bookAs you can see, Travel Cape Breton is divided into five segments, each one taking you through a different segment of the island by way of the “official” travel trails. These trails are: The Cabot Trail, The Fleur-de-lis Trail, The Ceilidh Trail, The Bras d’Or Lakes Scenic Drive, and the Metropolitan Cape Breton route which includes The Marconi Trail and the Colliery Route.

There are , however, two other “routes” which we feel we should mention that will take the traveller from the Canso Causeway to the eastern end of the island, The Trans Canada Highway (Hwy 105) and Route 4.

June 2013 (dates to be determined): Louisbourg Celebrates Aboriginal Heritage Parks Canada partners with the local Aboriginal community to celebrate our shared history at the Fortress of Louisbourg. Chiefs and members of the Aboriginal community in Nova Scotia gather to honour the cultures that met with their ancestors here on Louisbourg’s historic grounds. Smudging and pipe ceremonies take place in reverence for the lives lived and lost here. Traditional drumming, dance demonstrations and workshops highlight Aboriginal customs, traditions and ties to historic Louisbourg.

June 3-7 Canada’s Coolest School Trip hosted by the Fortress of Louisbourg Parks Canada and Canadian Geographic offer once again the school trip of a lifetime! Last year’s contest saw the winning class trek from PEI to Banff, Alberta. This year’s winners embark on a whirlwind tour of Cape Breton Island, including an overnight experience at the Fortress of Louisbourg! For more information, visit My Parks Pass.

June 13 - August 15 Exhibit: L’endroit le plus convenable / The Most Suitable PlaceThrough antique maps, documents, interactive computer-based activities and archaeological artefacts, this exhibit at Cape Breton University Art Gallery tells the story of the establishment by the French of the colony of Île Royale. The exhibit is a collaboration of Les Archives Charente-Maritime in La Rochelle, France, the Beaton Institute of Cape Breton University, and Parks Canada. June 22-23 Learn to Camp300After a successful inaugural event last year, the Fortress of Louisbourg Learn-to-Camp event is back with a bang! To celebrate 300 years of history, 300 campers pitch their tents on the terre-plein of the King’s Bastion. (Details and registration information to be announced.) For more information: 902-733-3552.

June 29-30 Following Historic Footsteps Guided Walk Take a stroll through history with a walking club and retrace the footsteps of those who once travelled these historic lands on foot. On June 29 and 30, the Cape Breton Island Hoppers Volkssport Club host special events as part of the 300th anniversary celebrations at the Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site. June 30 LouisRocks! Concert Series with a musical tribute to Louisbourg’s legacy Music genres merge on the night of June 30th as an eclectic mix of local and national performers take to one of the most phenomenal stages in Canada – the Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site. This multicultural concert and historical tribute ends with a memorable finale of cannons, muskets and 18th-century fireworks.

July 1 Canada Day! Parks Canada celebrates Canada Day with free admission to all national parks, national historic sites and national marine conservation areas across the country.

July 1-15 Land to Sea / Field to Lab Archaeology Event The Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site hosts an archaeology event featuring Parks Canada archaeologists from across Canada. Land to Sea/Field to Lab takes place the first two weeks in July. Archaeology demonstrations include a range of activities including terrestrial and underwater fieldwork, conservation work and collections management. Check back soon for more information.

July 5-7 Forge300 Forge300, hosted by the Cape Breton Blacksmiths Association, is the first-ever international blacksmithing event held in Cape Breton. The Fortress of Louisbourg is a fitting and historic venue for this two-day international event that honours a trade practised 300 years ago in this bustling global seaport. Demonstrations and workshops offer visitors a chance to get in on the hammering action. For more information, visit the Forge300 Web site.

July 20 Louisbourg Celebrates Families! Family fun is always on the menu at the Fortress of Louisbourg. But during the site’s 300th anniversary celebrations, July 20th, Parks Day, is jam-packed with family activities as Louisbourg celebrates families! The fun includes games, dancing, races, theatre, dress-up, children’s entertainers and a barbecue.

LouisRocks! Concert Series with Joel Plaskett Emergency Described as one of Canada’s leading musical voices, award-winning singer-songwriter Joel Plaskett proudly hits the quay at the Fortress of Louisbourg to celebrate 300 years of history. Plaskett’s only Cape Breton appearance in 2013 includes a show-stopping, choreographed cannon-fire finale, complete with fireworks.

July 25-28 CultureFête! A spirited cultural fair spills into Louisbourg’s historic streets as cultures merge to celebrate food, clothing, music, dance, stories and songs. This festive fair recreates the bustling, multicultural, harbourside market that was a daily part of life in 18th-century Louisbourg. Honouring and embracing all cultures with connections and legacies linked to the historic Fortress, CultureFête highlights themes each day to showcase artists and artisans, trades and cuisine.

August 4 Storm the FortressRide your motorcycle into the Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site and spend an evening in the 18th century! For tickets visit the Fortress Louisbourg Association Web site or call 902-733-2280 ext 3436.

August 9-13 Louisbourg Celebrates Seafaring Traditions Louisbourg’s historic harbour becomes a sea of sails once again to honour the area’s deep maritime roots. A parade of sails, parade of lights, races, kayaking and harbour tours are scheduled to showcase the site’s ties to the water. Special animation and interpretation at the historic site bring to life stories about 18th-century shipwrecks and Parks Canada’s underwater archaeology work.

August 10 Louisbourg Celebrates Diversity (LGBTQ Pride)! In conjunction with its 300th anniversary celebrations, the Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site hosts a Diversity Day to celebrate LGBTQ Pride. Parks Canada works with community groups to host special events for the LGBTQ community.

August 17 Race Through Time This exhilarating 8-mile road race takes you from modern-day Louisbourg into the 18th-century Fortress, where the French walked nearly 300 years ago. Awards and a delicious spaghetti dinner follow the race. Registration details to be announced. All registered runners receive a t-shirt! August 18 Louisbourg Celebrates Acadian Heritage! The Acadian community gathers at the Fortress of Louisbourg to celebrate their lasting legacies and their historic ties to the 18th-century fortified town. Acadian music, dance and masquerade add some extra joie de vivre to Louisbourg’s streets. Special workshops, demonstrations and talks share Acadian customs, traditions and historic connections to Louisbourg.

August 24-25 SuperFête de Saint-Louis Each year, the Fortress of Louisbourg celebrates the Feast of Saint Louis (la Fête de Saint-Louis). This year the Fête is extra special. To mark 300 years of history, the Feast of Saint Louis has become a two-day Super Fête! Each day a special concert complements traditional Feast of Saint Louis activities taking place throughout the site, which include a traditional procession and parade through town, 18th-century music, dance, and military demonstrations.

August 25 Fiddles for the Fête To finish off a feast in fine Cape Breton fashion, the Fortress welcomes fiddles for the Fête! Local musicians fill the Fortress with fiddle music for an outdoor square dance.

September 21 LouisRocks! at Founders’ Feast and Concert The Founders’ Feast is an exclusive culinary event hosted by a guest chef within the walls of the Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site. Sit down to an impressive full-course meal made with local ingredients and paired perfectly with select wines, as described by your chef. Take the experience home with you with the purchase of a culinary history book full of recipes, stories and vignettes about cooking à la française, 18th-century style. This special dinner is followed by a concert in the Chapel.

September 22 Growing Together A special legacy project of the Louisbourg300 celebrations is the De Gannes Gardens Project. Parks Canada partners with Family Place Resource Centre in Sydney to offer gardening space and staff expertise to teach families about gardening, including the nutritional benefits as well as the physical, mental and social benefits of being outside together working as a family. September 22 marks the official opening ceremony for this special project.

October 13 Step Into the Past (Celtic Colours International Festival) This annual sellout musical event during the Celtic Colours International Festival takes on a special theme to celebrate the 300th anniversary of Louisbourg’s founding. October 17 Celtic Colours Salutes 300 Years of Louisbourg In honour of the 300th anniversary of the founding of Louisbourg, Celtic Colours International Festival hosts an additional concert at the national historic site. For more information, visit Celtic Colours International Festival.

December 2013December 8 Holiday ConcertCelebrate the holidays at the Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site and join us for our annual holiday concert. The concert takes place in the chapel in the King’s Bastion on site.

Cabot TrailWhales, white caps and

Imagine standing on a mountain 1500 feet above the sea. A summer shower has just passed and a fine mist lingers on your face. In the valley below, a rainbow

rises toward you, arching so close you can almost reach out and touch it. Out at sea, beyond the mountains, the sun kisses the sky and whitecaps are

coaxed to life by an offshore breeze that’s beginning to blow.

This is the Cabot Trail.

The Lonely Planet calls the Cabot Trail “one of the most scenic destinations in the world.” Winding down this 300km coastal route, you’ll quickly understand why. Named after Italian explorer John Cabot, Cape Breton’s Cabot Trail showcases the best our island has to offer. Seasons along the Cabot Trail are marked with hiking op-portunities in the spring, championship golf during the summer, Celtic celebra-tions in the fall and skiing adventures in the winter. One third of the Cabot Trail is located within the Cape Breton Highlands National Park, a striking mix of natural wonders and cultural treasures. The Cape Breton Highlands, with

steep cliffs and ocean views at virtually every turn, is widely considered the most stunning feature of the park. Cabot Trail sightseeing is one of the most popular activities offered by the national park. Numerous viewpoints provide ample op-portunities to admire the natural beauty of the landscape. Set aside lots of time, there is no need to rush. The beautiful vistas are just a part of your Cabot Trail adventure. This is a part of the world that begs exploration that will create lasting memories. The ‘Trail’ (as locals call it) is a loop which can be travelled in either di-rection, each way an experience unto itself. 12

Your Cabot Trail journey begins at Baddeck, a full-service community situated on the Bras d’Or Lake and one of the country’s most popular resort communities. The most notable resident of Baddeck was inventor Alexander Graham Bell, whose splendid estate “Beinn Bhreagh” can be seen from the Village. At the Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site, Bell’s life and his work come alive with exhibits, dem-onstrations and hands-on activities. The 100th Anniversary of the Bras d’Or Yacht Club Regatta week, Cabot Trail Relay Run, exciting July 1st Canada Day Celebrations, superb shopping and dining opportunities all make Baddeck a great place to stop off for an extended visit.- Alexander Graham Bell National Historic

Site: here you can explore the amazing world of inventor A. G. Bell; find out how he bridged the world between sound and silence; participate in experiments,

kite-making and kite-flying programs and take in a presentation in the Mr. Bell Theatre. Celebrate Aviation Day and mark the flight of the Silver Dart, the first powered flight in Canada and the British Empire which took off right on Baddeck Bay. For something really special, take part in a White Glove Tour. The tour takes visitors behind the scenes for an opportunity to look and touch personal artifacts not currently on display at the museum. See old photographs and notebooks and even take a few steps with Bell’s walking stick.

Upon departure from Baddeck, continue on the Cabot Trail by taking the Trans Canada Highway (Hwy 105) a few kilome-tres west to Nyanza, and Exit 7. This will bring you through Hunter’s Mountain, through Middle River, Lake O’Law and into the Margarees.

The area known as the ‘Margarees’, are small areas which take their name from the renowned Margaree River. Designated a “Canadian Heritage River”, it’s one of Eastern Canada’s best-known rivers. This is mostly due to the presence of some of the world’s best salmon pools, creating an angler’s paradise that attracts sport fish-ers from far and wide. A canoe trip down the River, from Lake Ainslie to Margaree Harbour, is an experience of a lifetime and many accommodations can provide access to canoes and guides. Northeast Margaree is located right on the Cabot Trail. Take the Egypt Road to get to Margaree Valley to visit the Salmon Museum and historic Fish Hatchery (the oldest in Nova Scotia) where you can ac-cess the trail network for hiking, skiing or snowmobiling. Watch for the sign to turn off to Margaree Centre and check out one of the locals’ favorite swimming holes!Follow the Cabot Trail to Margaree Forks, where the Southwest and the Northeast Margaree Rivers meet. Here you will find a Visitor Information Centre, Coady-Tompkins Library, and convenience store. There’s a turnoff here onto the Ceilidh Trail (Route 19) which takes you west through Southwest Margaree and eventually to Inverness. The Cabot Trail, however, contin-ues through Margaree Forks, all along the River to Margaree Harbour. For the culinary enthusiast, be sure to stop into the Larch

Wood Enterprises factory and peruse the collection of handmade cutting boards, referred to by many chefs as functional works of art. Across the River (watch for the bridge) is East Margaree, or as they call it locally, “The French Side”.Eventually you’ll come to the mouth of the River and Margaree Harbour. To get to the community of Margaree Harbour, where there is a general store and the beautiful Chimney Corner beach, turn left just before the long new bridge that crosses the River. To continue your journey along the Cabot Trail, cross the bridge to Belle Côte.Belle Côte marks the beginning of your Acadian adventure. You’ll notice French names like Cap le Moine, St. Joseph du Moine, and Grand Etang as you make this coastal drive along the Gulf of St. Lawrence. This road twists its way to Chéticamp, the largest community of Acadian life on the Island.Architecture, history and diligently pre-served culture combine to give the Acadian villages of this area a personality all their own. Direct descendants of the original Acadians expelled by the British from Nova Scotia in the seventeen hundreds, residents of this community carry on traditions passed down through the generations. It just so happens that sharing their culture with visitors is an Acadian specialty.First stop? Le Centre de la Mi-carême. This age old festival is held annually during the Catholic season of Lent and involves

many people, called les mi-carêmes, who disguise themselves from head to toe and visit their neighbours. Once their identity is revealed, all enjoy a treat before heading to the next destination where the game begins again. At Le Centre, you’ll learn how to make a Mi-carême mask and about the fun of this Acadian tradition.As you continue on, be sure to take in the music of Chéticamp, in particular the fiddling. It’s a unique blend of French and Scottish styles with a long and fascinating tradition. To add to the charm, the food of this area is distinctly Acadian and you’ll have the opportunity to feast on dishes like fricot, meat pie and chiard. There are a number of restaurants and establishments to sample it all. As you drive north through the village, you’ll see Les Trois Pignons (The Three Gables). This is the centre of activity for the community’s historical and genealogical pursuits, and a great source of information for the visitor. The Dr. Elizabeth LeFort Gallery displays a remarkable collec-tion of the famous “Chéticamp hooking” in the form of rugs and tapestries. The rug hooking done in Chéticamp is as old as the community itself and is still produced totally by hand, including the dying of the wool; coasters, table and floor mats, and tapestries of all sizes can be found in just about every shop in Chéticamp.Just north of Chéticamp is Petit Etang where you’ll enter the Cape Breton High-lands National Park, but stop at the famous Aucoin’s Bakery for some delectable baked goods to serve as a special treat as you drive through the mountains. An entrance fee is required for use of Park facilities in-cluding sightseeing.The Cape Breton Highlands National Park is 950 sq km (366 sq mi) of raw, untouched beauty. Once you enter the Park at Petit Etang, stop at the Visitor Centre where you can watch a 10 minute slide show, browse through exhibits or one of Atlantic Canada’s Largest Nature Bookstores. Begin your climb toward the sky, following the

contours of the ocean up and over French Mountain, 1,500 feet to the top. Don’t be in a hurry. Stop off at some of the viewpoints, stand for a while on top of the mountain and let the cliffs, the sea air and the wilder-ness welcome you. Park the car, grab your binoculars, and take one of the many hikes the Park has to offer – there are 26 in total! Keep in mind that it is a “protected area” where special rules apply. Please don’t feed the animals, collect rocks, driftwood, fossils or plants. French Mountain is the first mountain you’ll climb, a truly unique experiencethat takes you inland, through awesome canyons, and eventually back out to the sea, down MacKenzie Mountain into the community of Pleasant Bay. Here you can stop off for lunch or overnight. Spend time at the Whale Interpretive Centre and learn about the whales that inhabit the Gulf of St. Law-rence. Bring your experience to life with a whale-watching cruise, where visitors are guaranteed whale sightings. As you cross the northern perimeter of the Trail on your way to the Top of The Island, the region north of the National Park boundaries, you will find Cape Breton’s most northern communities. Attractions such as the North Highlands Community Museum and St. Paul’s Island Museum & Lighthouse are great attractions for the historic-minded tourist. The top of the island also boasts more history with the John Cabot Landing Provincial Park (where John Cabot landed) and more entertain-ment with the Bay St. Lawrence Fishing Derby and Crabfest. Just southwest of Cape North village, visit Arts North, a craft gallery retailing the work of twenty four

juried Cape Breton artisans. Then, at Cape North, you can take a scenic tour to Bay St. Lawrence, just 16 km (10 mi) from Cape North. This drive along Aspy Bay is well worth the effort. Have you ever stood on a cliff and watched whales just offshore putting on a show just for you? If you go to Meat Cove, the most northerly point on the Island, you will. From Cape North you can also take a short detour to the community of Dingwall, where you can spend a glorious day on the beach. Just south of Cape North, past the Dingwall turnoff, the Cabot Trail leads you to South Harbour. You can keep on the Trail or venture off the beaten path a bit and take the Alternate Scenic Route through Smelt Brook, White Point and Neil’s Harbour, where you’ll no doubt get the urge to park the car and walk along a beach, or just sit by the ocean and allow yourself to indulge in the sensations that surround you.After 6 hours, perhaps several days, de-pending on how much stopping and experiencing you’ve been doing, you will come to the Ingonishes. This community is one of the Island’s busiest and most “ac-commodating” areas. You’ll find everything here from superb accommodations and restaurants, to art galleries, craft shops, and the grocery store; which is also a ser-vice centre. And, of course, the Highland

Links Golf Course.Hike up a mountain and even partake in the 10th annual Hike the Highlands Festival in September. Watch for whales. Camp in the various campgrounds. Golf by the sea. And if you’re a beach lover, plan to stay forever. Back at sea level, the communities along the “North Shore” offer a fitting end to your Cabot Trail adventure. The St. Ann’s Bay area is home to direct descendants of the Gaelic pioneers with some residents still speaking the Gaelic language. In the hall at Breton Cove you will find the Gaelic Singers Association, a new organization carrying on an old tradition.Along the North Shore and St. Ann’s Bay you can find the finest collection of 11 top quality artisans’ studios/shops, every-thing from pottery making, glass blowing, leather, carving, unique clothing, baskets and ironwork. Demonstrations of work are frequent. For more info on the Artisan Trail visit www.capebretoncraft.com, a com-plete listing of artisans around the Island. At Indian Brook, just after you cross the Barachois Bridge you will come to a junc-tion. A right turn keeps you on the Cabot Trail through Tarbot, North River and Goose Cove. You can also stop and enjoy salmon fishing or hike North River Falls; a trail which leads to one of the highest waterfalls in Nova Scotia . As you near the end of this portion of St. Anns, don’t pass up the opportunity to visit the Gaelic College of Arts and Crafts, Cabot Trail

which is celebrating its 75h anniversary in 2013. The Hall of the Clans gives you a look at the history, while the gift shop contains all things Gaelic – from tartan to books to jewelry. This year also marks the 40th anni-versary of Festival of Cape Breton Fiddling.Back at Indian Brook, if you continue straight ahead along route 312, you’ll arrive at the the Englishtown Ferry (no reservations required, small fee). A short trip on this quaint transportation device will take you over to Englishtown, one of the oldest settlements in North America, having been established as a French fish-ing port back in 1597. Later, in 1629, the first French fortification in the New World was built here, visited and provisioned by Champlain himself. Whichever route you choose, you will eventually find yourself back on the Trans-Canada Highway (Hwy 105) at the end, alas, of the Cabot Trail. Unless of course, you’re longing for more. In which case you can retrace your steps back around and see it from a totally different perspective.

Fleur-de-Lis TrailSurf, seabirds and soldiers

It begins at the Canso Causeway. From Port Hastings you will keep to your right onto Route 104. This takes you to Port Hawkesbury, one of the Island’s biggest and busiest

centres, where, among other things, a new waterfront development will keep you entertained with shops, ceilidhs and lots of other activities. From Port Hawkesbury the

Fleur-de-lis takes you around the beautiful and historic Isle Madame, through River Bourgeois and St. Peter’s, home of St. Peter’s Canal, Nova Scotia’s only functioning tidal

lock system, then along the south coast through L’Ardoise, Grand River, Fourchu and Gabarus, then inland to Marion Bridge and back out to the coast to Lousibourg.

The Fleur de lis Trail is an experience waiting to happen.

A beach day is always in order on the Fleur de lis Trail. Point Michaud Beach comes alive with surfers during the summer months. Lessons are available on the beach and if you happen to be in town, don’t miss the annual Point Michaud Surf Classic!Next item on your to-do list? Time travel. The Fleur-de-Lis Trail will eventually bring you to the largest historical reconstruction in North America -The Fortress of Louis-bourg, a Parks Canada Historic Site. Once you get past the guards and through the gate, you travel back hundreds of years -300 to be exact. In 2013, Louisbourg is celebrating this significant anniversary

It is, and probably always will be, the one and only “road to the Isle”. The Fleur de Lis Trail can be found once across the causeway by keeping right.The Strait area has lots to offer the travel-ler by way of services, accommodations, entertainment and shops, much of which you will find in Port Hastings itself, along Route 104 to Port Hawkesbury, and the Town of Port Hawkesbury. The two other centres on Isle Madame, Petit-de-Grat and D’Escousse, will intrigue you with tales of early settlers like Gabriel Samson who, in 1715 journeyed from Louisbourg to become Petit-de-Grat’s first inhabitant. You’ll hear, too, of shipbuilders and sea captains who sailed the world over. As for scenery, have your camera ready. Around every turn, along every cove, and in every small fishing vil-lage you’ll discover a hundred memorable photographs waiting to be taken.Travel back to Hwy 104 and Exit 47 to beautiful picturesque River Bourgeois and the bustling village of St. Peter’s. There are restaurants, shops and a visitor information centre. If it’s history you want, St. Peter’s will keep you intrigued with stories of Nicolas Denys, Cape Breton’s first entrepreneur who established a trading post in 1650 from which he traded fish, furs, timber and whatever else he could find in abundance in the area. You can visit a replica of his trading post and get to know this very ambitious, adventurous and colourful pioneer. At St. Peter’s Canal, which is the

only functioning tidal lock system in Nova Scotia, you can watch water craft coming and going through the locks or do some recreational fishing from the Canal wall. Just east of St. Peter’s you will turn onto Rte 247 which will take you along yet another coastline through the Acadian village of L’Ardoise then on to Grand River, and the south coast communities of Framboise, Fourchu and Gabarus. Most of this road is lightly travelled and sparsely populated. From Fourchu, follow Route 327 for about 20 km (12 mi) north until you come to Marion Bridge, and your first encounter with the Mira. To get to Louisbourg from here, you first must travel along the River (on either side) to Albert Bridge. Either Trout Brook Road or Hillside Road will get you to Route 22 (The Louisbourg Highway, as we call it locally) and Albert Bridge. In Marion Bridge, you’ll find the Two Rivers Wildlife Park on the Sandfield Road. Within its five hundred plus acre grounds live over 50 species of native and non-native animals and birds, a petting zoo, hiking and cross-country ski trails, wagon and sleigh rides, a “U-fish” pond, children’s playground and camping facilities.

Ceilidh TrailFiddles, festivals and fabulous beaches

The Ceilidh Trail stretches from the Canso Causeway around the western shore of the Island through Creignish, Judique, Port Hood, Mabou and Inverness to the Margarees.

Along that particular stretch of splendid Cape Breton coastline, you will find more fiddlers, dancers, piano players and other musicians per square mile than any other part

of the Island (quite possibly the world). With all those musicians, there is usually not a day that goes by during the summer that a ceilidh or concert or dance isn’t happening.

Select your fabric and Ann will provide you with the dye and teach you the necessary tech-niques to create a unique memento. Back on the Ceilidh Trail, you’ll head for In-verness, but not without a stop in Glenville at the Glenora Inn & Distillery. It is here that North America’s first Single Malt Whisky is created. Visitors are welcomed to take a tour of the operations and sample the product, Glen Breton Rare. The pub and dining room offer a full menu, with some whisky infused items, and there is live music nightly during the summer season.Back on The Ceilidh Trail you’ll make your way into Inverness. If you’re a golfer, you’ll be happy to know you’ve reached the home of Cabot Links, Canada’s First True Links course. This track has been the re-cipient of unprecedented media attention and was rated by SCOREGolf as Canada’s

Best New Course in 2012. In keeping with the authentic links experience, it’s walking only (medical carts are available), but there are local caddies who are guaranteed to enhance your time on the course. There is also a bar and dining room onsite. Cabot Links runs alongside Inverness Beach, which attracts folks from all over the Island. Spend the day, swimming and en-joying the sun. Perhaps you’ve spent some time collecting beach glass and found a really special piece. Consider a visit to the Tears of Glass studio on Beach Rd. and commission a piece of jewelry, or browse artist Brenda Reichel’s existing collection. As evening approaches– as the sun drops into the horizon, you’ll understand why it’s called the ‘Sunset Side of the Island’. Another unique experience in the village of Inverness is harness racing at Inverness Raceway, which happens during the sum-mer months.

As you continue on the Ceilidh Trail, you’ll head towards Dunvegan via the beautiful coastal Broad Cove Chapel Road. Here you have another choice to make. You can either keep driving along the shore (Route

219) to Margaree Harbour, or veer inland a bit (keeping on Route 19) to Margaree Forks. Both options will take you to the end of the Ceilidh Trail and onto the Cabot Trail.

Bras d’Or Lakes Scenic Drive

Sailboats, soaring eagles and Scottish Pioneers

The Bras d’Or Lake, UNESCO designated biosphere, is a salt-water lake system that covers over 1,165 square kilometres (450 square miles) of territory right in the middle of Cape Breton. The Bras d’Or Lake Scenic

Drive, as the name implies, takes the traveller around much of its shoreline, by way of many of the island’s lesser-travelled scenic roads.

Highland Village, Iona

On a hill in Iona, overlooking the Barra Strait, there’s a 43-acre “housing develop-ment” that offers yet another opportunity for time travel. It is the Highland Village, an outdoor living history museum of authen-tic pioneer homes and places of work, that chronicles the struggles and triumphs of the Scottish Gaelic settlers from their first days in Cape Breton almost 200 years ago. You can experience the Hebridean Black

House, Alex Matheson’s Blacksmith’s Shop and the Carding Mill. The Barra Strait, so called in honour of some of those pioneers who settled in the Iona area from the Scot-tish Isle of Barra, separates the upper and lower portions of Cape Breton’s “inland sea”, the Bras d’Or Lake. If you were to take a boat ride from Iona, south to St. Peter’s, you would pass by the Mi’kmaw communities of Eskasoni and 44

you to the village of St. Peter’s where the historic St. Peter’s Canal connects the At-lantic Ocean with the Bras d’Or Lake; and you’ll pass through the community of Big Pond where singer Rita MacNeil grew up. In fact, you can stop by Rita’s Tea Room (June 29th to October 14th, 10am to 5pm 7 days a week) for an oatcake and a spot of tea! There are two ways to experience the Bras d’Or Lake Scenic Drive - The Northern Loop and The Southern Loop of the lake are both worthy of your time.NORTHERN LOOPThe Northern Loop begins at Iron Mines, about 35 km (21 mi) east of the Canso Causeway, and follows the Trans-Canada Highway east through Waycobah and Whycocomagh. At Aberdeen it ventures off the main highway at Exit 6 and follows the Lake to Iona then eventually completes the loop back onto the Trans-Canada Highway. The Bras d’Or is in full view as you approach the village of Waycobah, a Mi’kmaw First Nation Reserve at the very head of one of the Lake largest inlets. Waycobah officially came into being in 1833 and shares this stretch of the Bras d’Or Lake with its sister village Whycocomagh, settled in 1821 by

Chapel Island on the shores of the Lake. For a unique cultural experience, consider partaking in Eskasoni Cultural Journeys. Eskasoni First Nation and the Highland Vil-lage Museum have collaborated to develop a unique multi-cultural tour (Mi’kmaq and Gaelic Culture). The tour includes two dif-ferent and distinct cultures reflecting the parallels and common threads linking the cultures in history and present day. You will be hosted by members of the Eskasoni First Nation with stories and song, share in a traditional feast and learn by participating in traditional fishing practices. A drive around the Bras d’Or Lake will take you through Whycocomagh, on the Northern Loop, where both a Scottish and a Mi’kmaw settlement exist side by side. Here you can discover what it’s like to be a ‘Blacksmith for a Day’ with local blacksmith Grant Haverstock and try your hand at his craft.On the south side of the Lake, it will take

Stop off here for a while and peruse the work of the Mik’maq ar-tisans, before taking Exit 6 at Aberdeen toward Grand Narrows and Iona.“Fàilte gu cridhe gàidhealach Albainn ùir”, a Gaelic welcome to the centre of the Island. Exit 6 off the Trans Canada Highway at Ab-erdeen is your gateway to this area. A short ferry ride, a drive along the Lake, a trip back in time to the days of the Scottish pioneers. Discover what life was like for the Gaels many years ago and enjoy an intimate evening at the Highland Village, complete with stories of the historical site, laughter and fun. Allow yourself to be captivated by the sights, intrigued by the history, and charmed by the people of this special place.If you look at the map of Cape Breton Island, you’ll see that this drive follows the shore of the Bras d’Or like a shadow, and takes you almost all of the way along St. Andrew’s Channel to George’s River and eventually to the community of Bras d’Or, and the Trans Canada Highway (Hwy 105). You will enjoy the leisurely drive as the road is lightly-travelled, and more than once you will find yourself wanting to stop the car for a closer look at the surroundings. Once you’ve passed through George’s River, you’ll find yourself once again on the Trans Canada Highway (Hwy 105). This time you’ve arrived in the community of Bras d’Or and to complete the loop you head west on the Trans Canada toward Baddeck and eventually back to Whycocomagh.

Up for a side trip? Head to Boularderie Is-land. Turn down the Grove’s Point Road at Bras d’Or (watch for the ice cream caboose) and drive along the shore of Boularderie Island until you reach the Grove’s Point Picnic Park. Have a swim, maybe a picnic lunch if you brought one, relax for a while on the beach in the sun, or under a shady spruce. Then, relaxed and happy, you can continue your drive around Boularderie Island up along its northern shore until you come back to the Trans Canada Highway, this time at Seal Island. Another side-trip to consider. From Bras d’Or, stay on the Trans Canada Highway until you come to Exit 16 to Millville and Big Bras d’Or. It’s farming country along here, as the awesome fields and greenhouses will tell you. Consider a stop at Hank’s Family Farm, where you can get fresh produce and if there are youngsters traveling with you, visiting with the animals is a must. To get back onto the Trans Canada Highway, continue driving on the Big Bras d’Or road and you will come to Exit 14 which will take you back onto the Trans Canada at Seal Island. Cross the Seal Island Bridge, then up and over Kelly’s Mountain. At the St. Ann’s Lookoff, pull in for an eagle’s eye view of St. Ann’s Bay. You just might get sight of a bright red and yellow Cape Islander as it heads toward the Englishtown wharf with a day’s catch. This last stretch of Trans Canada Highway completes the Northern Loop. You’ll have another opportunity to visit the Village of Baddeck, where you’ll find

lots to do and see (more about Baddeck in the Cabot Trail section). Eventually you will find yourself back in Whycocomagh where you began your loop.SOUTHERN LOOPThis description of the Southern Loop around the Bras d’Or Lake begins at the Canso Causeway and travels down the Trans Canada Highway. Exit 4 at Iron Mines will take you to Orangedale, a small com-munity on River Denys Basin. It will take you around this lightly-travelled, unspoiled shore of the Bras d’Or Lake to St. Peters. The Southern Loop continues from St. Peter’s along the southern shore of the Lake through the Mi’kmaw community of Chapel Island, Soldiers Cove, Hay Cove, then on to East Bay, to Eskasoni, another Mi’kmaw community and eventually to Grand Narrows, where it connects with the Northern Loop.Port Hastings is the first village you will see once you cross the Canso Causeway onto Cape Breton Island. Take the #4 highway to Port Hawkesbury, one of the largest towns on Cape Breton Island. As you leave the town, turn left at the lights and follow Route #4, until you come to the Village of Cleveland (approx 13 km); turn left and keep right, past the post office (approx 13 km), then turn right onto Dundee Road keeping the Bras d”or Lake on your left as you go through the communities of Dundee, St George’s Channel, The Points

Roberta, Cape George, French Cove and Samsonville to St Peter’s. On this route you will find in Dundee a Driv-ing Range, Beach, Marina, Resort and Golf Course, St Georges Beach and Lighthouse, and the Samsonville Centennial Park and Monument which affords a magnificent view of the entrance to the Bras d’Or Lake. In St Peter’s you will continue back onto Route 4. The distance for the junction at Cleveland to St Peter’s is approximately 50 kms.If you are traveling from the eastern part of Cape Breton, turn right on Pepperell St. to the West Bay Highway by the Irving Station in St. Peter’s. If you follow this highway, keeping the Bras d’Or Lake always to your right, your will travel through the village of West Bay, on to Marble Mountain, with the beautiful views of the Bras d’Or Lake and its white sandy beaches, and to Orange-dale, where you turn left and arrive at Iron Mines, the start of the Northern Loop. At Orangedale you will find the Orangedale Station Museum.When the Europeans first came to our shores and encountered the Mi’kmaq,

they assumed that the native people had no religious beliefs, so they set about converting them to Christianity. In 1610, Grand Chief Membertou and twenty-one members of his family were baptized. In 1628 the Mi’kmaq adopted St. Anne as their patron saint. Each July at Chapel Island First Nation a “Mawio’mi” is held to honour St. Anne, the so-called “grandmother” of the Mi’kmaq. This traditional gathering is a celebration of joy, remembrance, goodwill and sharing. It pays tribute to the old and the new, the living and the deceased, and it reaffirms the strengths and abilities of all who participate. This segment of the Bras d’Or Lake Scenic Drive takes you along Rte 4, the southern shore of the Bras d’Or Lake, through John-stown, Big Pond (don’t forget to stop at Rita McNeil’s Tea Room), Ben Eoin and East Bay. This area is bald eagle territory and sight-ings are common. At East Bay you will turn off toward Es-kasoni, Nova Scotia’s largest First Nation. Traditional Pow Wows are held here dur-ing the summer to celebrate the Mi’kmaw traditions with drumming, dancing, feasts and craft displays. From Eskasoni, follow the Bras d’Or Lake Scenic Drive to Grand Narrows where you will make a connection with Rte 223, the Northern Loop.

Marconi TrailCoastal towns, coal mines and cultural diversity

One of the most remarkable things about this area is that all of the communities, large or small, are situated on the ocean. Beginning at Sydney Mines and North Sydney, you will travel along the eastern seacoast to Sydney, Cape Breton’s only

city. From there you will have another chance to visit the town of Louisbourg and the great Fortress, then travel along the Marconi Trail through the fishing villages

of Main-à-Dieu, Port Morien and Donkin, to the Island’s largest town, Glace Bay. The final segment of the route takes you along The Colliery Route from Glace Bay

to New Waterford and New Victoria, back to Sydney.

Cossit— days when a military installation of Loyalist troops occupied Battery Park at the northernmost end of Charlotte Street. Mingle among the ghosts of Rev. Cossit and his family at their original home on Charlotte Street, Sydney’s oldest house, now the Cossit House Museum. A little further north on Charlotte Street (number 25), stands a house that was, in the early 1800’s Sydney’s first courthouse and jail. It was there, in a dark, stone-walled cell that Charlotte Flahaven spent her last days be-fore she was led to Battery Park and hanged for the murder of her husband. Peak your interest? The Centre for Craft and Design is not only a retail outlet for some of the finest artisans on the Is-land, it also offers courses and workshops throughout the year. The Joan Harris Cruise Pavillion on the waterfront is home to the ‘giant fiddle’ – a great place for photo ops!MARCONI TRAILCape Breton may seem like an unlikely place to find a trail named after a Nobel Prize winning Italian inventor of a century ago, but it will all make sense once you hear the whole story. In 1902 Marconi came to Cape Breton to build a station for transat-lantic wireless communications with Great Britian. The first message was transmitted from his station at Table Head in Glace Bay to Cornwall, England on December 15, 1902. The Marconi Trail follows the rugged coastline of Cape Breton’s eastern shore from Louisbourg to Glace Bay, via the coastal villages of Main-à-Dieu, Port Morien (home of the first coal mine and first Boy Scout in North America) and Donkin. THE COLLIERY ROUTE In the early years of the 1900’s, The British Empire Steel Corporation, which controlled the coal industry in

Nova Scotia, pushed coal miners and their families to the brink of starvation. In 1925, the miners had enough and fought back by calling a strike. An official of the company made a public statement in which he arro-gantly stated that the company would win the battle because the miners could never “stand the gaff” – meaning they didn’t have the fortitude to withstand the hunger and deprivation that was being forced upon them by the Company. He was wrong. The miners did “stand the gaff”— for five months— and set a precedent for future labour relations in the industry and laid the groundwork for the eventual attainment of decent working conditions and fair wages.The Colliery Route, which links the coal mining towns of eastern Cape Breton, is a tribute to these early miners and a reminder of the leading role coal mining played in Cape Breton’s history. The Colliery Route begins in Glace Bay and follows the coastline through Dominion, Gardiner Mines, Lingan, New Waterford and New Victoria to Whitney Pier. These

are communities that grew up around the coal mines. On the Colliery Route you’ll find the Savoy Theatre - a hub of entertain-ment for over 80 years. An evening in the original theatre (perhaps for one of the community based pro-ductions) will leave you impressed
