Genesis 32:23-2823 He took them, sent them over the brook, and sent over what he had.24 Then Jacob was left alone; and a Man wrestled with him until thebreaking of day. 25 Now when He saw thatHe did not prevailagainst him, He touched the socket of his hip; and the socket of

Jacobs hip was out of joint as He wrestled with him. 26 AndHe said,

Let Me go, for the day breaks. But he said, I will not let You go unless You bless me!27So He said to him, What is your name?He said, Jacob.28 AndHe said, Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, butIsrael; for you have struggled with God and with men, and have

    prevailed.

Travailing prayer doesnt always show by the physical or outward, butit always produces life (spiritually)

Jacobs wrestling produced a spiritual birth

    the Nation of Israel

Travail releases the creative power of the HolySpirit into a situation to produce, create or

    give birth to something.

Remember, we dont birth anything spiritually,

    the Holy Spirit does!

We are the conduit that He works through.

    Gods Birthing Agent

    the Holy Spirit

Genesis 1:1-21 In the beginning God created the heavens and

the earth. 2 The earth was without form, andvoid; and darkness was on the face of the

deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering overthe face of the waters.

without form tohuw a desolation, to liewaste, a desert, a worthless thing, formless, lifeless.

hovering rachaph (a reproductive term) literally tobrood over (root word for breed). The Holy Spirit in theaccount of creation is birthing something. In this casethe earth.

We know from the NT that Jesus was calling forth life inGenesis. All things were created by His Word (John 1.1-3; Col. 1.16). It was the Holy Spirit that brooded orhovered over the earth, releasing His creative power at

the Words ofJesus, giving birth to what Christ spoke.

The concept is the same as travail; giving birth tosomething.

Psalm 90:2 (Amplified Bible)2Before the mountains were brought forth or ever You had

formed and given birth to the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting You are God.

What the Holy Spirit was doing in Genesis when He

brought forth or gave birth to the earth and theworld is exactly what He wants to do through ourprayers in bringing forth sons and daughters (Isaiah66.8).

He wants to hover around people, releasing His awesomepower to convict, break bondages, bring revelation anddraw them to Himself in order to cause the new birthin them.

    Christs Travail

John 11:33-4433 Therefore, when Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her weeping,

He groaned in the spirit and was troubled. 34 AndHe said, Where have you laidhim? They said to Him, Lord, come and see.35Jesus wept. 36 Then the Jews said, SeehowHe loved him!37And some of them said, Could not this Man, who opened

the eyes of the blind, also have kept this man from dying?38 Then Jesus, againgroaning in Himself, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone lay against it. 39

Jesus said, Take away the stone.Martha, the sister of him who was dead, said to Him, Lord, by this time there is astench, for he has been dead four days.40Jesus said to her, Did I not say to you that if you would believe you would seethe glory of God?41 Then they took away the stone from the place where the deadman was lying. And Jesus lifted up His eyes and said, Father, I thank You that Youhave heard Me. 42 And I know that You always hear Me, but because of the peoplewho are standing by I said this, that they may believe that You sent Me.43 Nowwhen He had said these things, He cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth!44 And he who had died came out bound hand and foot with graveclothes, and his

face was wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, Loose him, and let him go.

troubled tarasso to stir up or agitate

Jesus tears were not merely tears ofsympathy, but of indignation and the stirringsof His spirit.

These things were taking place in the contextof prayer (v. 41)

We could conclude that Jesus was in travail, releasing the Holy Spirit to work before Hegave the command of, Lazarus, come forth.

    The Garden

The redemption of mankind began with Christs travail in thegarden

Luke 22:39-4639 Coming out, He went to the Mount of Olives, as He was accustomed,

andHis disciples also followedHim. 40 When He came to the place,He said to them, Pray that you may not enter into temptation.41 AndHe was withdrawn from them about a stones throw, andHeknelt down and prayed, 42 saying, Father, if it is Your will, take thiscup away from Me; nevertheless not My will, but Yours, be done.43

Then an angel appeared to Him from heaven, strengthening Him. 44

And being in agony, He prayed more earnestly. Then His sweat

became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.45 When He rose up from prayer, and had come to His disciples, He

found them sleeping from sorrow. 46 Then He said to them, Why doyou sleep? Rise and pray, lest you enter into temptation.

    Hebrews 5:7-8

7 who, in the days ofHis flesh, when He had offered

up prayers and supplications, with vehement cries

and tears to Him who was able to save Him from

death, and was heard because ofHis godly fear, 8

though He was a Son, yetHe learned obedience

by the things which He suffered.Jesus knew the burden and weight that He was

about to bear for the sins of mankind.

We see in Luke that Jesus began to shed greatdrops of blood. Jesus was literally bleedingthrough the pores of His skin. A medical conditionknow as hematidrosis.

When the blood of Christ began to flow, redemption was beginning. Through the sheddingof His blood, we have been cleansed from sin.

Hebrews 9:2222 And according to the law almost all things are

purified with blood, and without shedding ofblood there is no remission.

Redemption that ended at the Cross, began inthe Garden in travail. Jesus was in travail, notbecause He was working hard, but because He

was bringing forth the new birth. Jesus wants to use us to release His Holy Spirit

to bring forth new birth in people.

He wants to use us in tohuw(lifeless, fruitless, desolate, barren) situations, releasing His Lifeinto them.

    Just as Jesus did:

At creation. But through our intercession. He

    wants to birth new creations.

With Israel. Making a barren woman (Sarah) bring

    forth a nation.

When Lazarus was resurrected. He wants to bring

forth spiritual life from death. At Gethsemane, when the fruit of our redemption

    was pressed from the Vine.

Travail is also done for maturing and developingbelievers.

Galatians 4:1919 My little children, for whom I labor in birth again

until Christ is formed in you,

He called them his children; he had travailed once

    for their salvation.

He was in travail again for their maturity. This is an aspect of intercession we can be involved

    in to help believers mature.

How exciting it is to see the birth of a new

creation in Christ Jesus. How very important it

is to continue to intercede on their behalf

    during their maturing stage.

As Jesus example should be to us: less time in

conversation, more time in intercession. We

need to pray that the Holy Spirit will hover

    around people, bringing forth life!
