Levack Public School

Rainbow District School Board is pleased to announce the

appointment of Stephen Winckel as Principal of Levack Public

School, a community school known for its pursuit of academic

excellence in both official languages.

Stephen Winckel served as Principal of Markstay Public School for

the past four years. Prior to this, he was Vice-Principal of R.L.

Beattie Public School and Lansdowne Public School. He also

taught in a number of elementary schools.

Actively involved in elementary athletics, he has coached award-winning basketball teams. Principal Winckel is a graduate of the French

Immersion program at Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School.

"I look forward to the start of another exciting school year and to meeting the students, parents/guardians and residents of the communities that

we serve, "said Principal Winckel. “I would also like to extend a warm welcome to any families who are new to the school. Levack Public

School provides a secure learning environment where family and staff work in a supportive partnership for the benefit of all children.

Levack Public School offers English and French Immersion programs for students in JK to Grade 8. The school serves the communities of

Levack, Onaping, and Cartier for the English program and extends to Dowling for French Immersion students.

"Our goal is to enable students to achieve their personal best inside and outside of the classroom,” he said. “We pride ourselves on our

character education and making our school a safe environment for all students.”

The school is committed to offering literacy and mathematics programs that provide students with tools and skills for learning and life. In

addition, teachers use multimedia information technology and computers to support learning and further engage students.

The Balanced School Day is an alternative elementary school schedule that improves learning, promotes healthy eating and encourages daily

physical activity. The schedule provides three 100-minute blocks of instructional time and two nutritional breaks. Each nutritional break lasts

approximately 45 minutes, including 20 minutes for a healthy, nutritious lunch and 25 minutes for indoor and/or outdoor physical activity.

“We also provide a breakfast program that feeds all our students every Monday, Wednesday and Friday,” said Principal Winckel. He added:

“We are very fortunate to be located in the former Levack District High School. Home of the Leopard, we have a great facility with a full size

gym, cafeteria, art room, daycare, computer lab, library, tennis court, full size football field, track, and more. "The active School Council

supports the many academic and activity-based programs available at Levack Public School. Students also benefit from the support of

dedicated volunteers who help with reading, fundraising, excursions and special activities. When children work with volunteers, they are given

the extra time, attention and support which promotes improved learning and achievement. Volunteers really do make a difference!

Levack Public School offers a wide range of extra-curricular activities, including guitar, choir, sports, student parliament, band, and drama club.

In addition, students take part in a variety of system-wide events including Math, Science and Technology Olympics, Bridge Building

Competition, Science Fair, Heritage Fair, as well as Writing, Art, Poetry and Poster contests.

Students in Rainbow Schools will receive a Guide for Students and Parents the first week of school. The guide contains important information

that will serve as a handy reference throughout the school year. Parents can also obtain an overview of the 2012-2013 school year by visiting

rainbowschools.ca.

The first day of the 2012-2013 school year will be Tuesday, September 4, 2012.

Last month we ran an article about “dead” batteries. We neglected to mention that if you have children

attending Levack Public School, you can send the “dead” batteries to school with them for recycling! You

can also drop off your dead batteries at the Mini Mart in Levack and ORACLE will ensure that they get to

the recycling depot at the Library in Dowling!

To silence your squeaky hardwood floors, sprinkle some baby powder on the squeaky area and sweep it into the cracks. Then

wipe the floor. The baby powder between the boards will act as a lubricant and will stop the annoying noise!

and Onaping and Dowling.

OFCAN The Onaping Falls Community Action Network held two meetings in August.

The August 16 meeting was held at the Onaping Community Centre. Mayor Marianne Matichuk attended that meeting.

The second meeting was held on August 23 at the Dowling Leisure Centre. You can view the minutes of that meeting and many other

The Sudbury Public Library branches in Dowling and Chelmsford both have movie nights for the general public. These movie nights are free

of charge and give everyone the chance to see a reasonably current movie closer to home and an opportunity to “get out” for a while.

OFCAN is in the process of organizing the same thing for us here in Levack/Onaping! This is NOT a maybe sort of thing. It WILL happen.

Stay tuned for dates, times and movie selection! While there will be no charge for these events, a Donation jar will be at the door to help raise

funds for the Jump Park.

OFCAN welcomes all residents from Levack, Onaping and Dowling to join us at any meetings. OFCAN meetings are held twice a month—one

in Onaping (3rd Thursday) and Dowling (4th Thursday) at 7PM. The next meetings are scheduled for September 20 in Onaping and

September 27 in Dowling.

Every month ORACLE publishes a Trans Cab schedule on page 12. Many people have found this schedule useful when

trying to plan trips to Sudbury. Do you use the Trans Cab? Do you have an experience you would like to share with

The Story of Onaping Falls

After exploring the area and orienting themselves on the ground, plans were made to get started. They must have stayed at least overnight because Jack Norrena’s children back at Selwood Mine remember their father being away for a few days. Whether or not they talked to Old Quin is not known but when he did hear of the plans to take over what he considered his land he was bitterly disappointed and although he knew he had no legal right to the property, for the rest of his life he accused Mond Nickel of stealing his farmland. Two weeks later, Mr. and Mrs. Norenna, two daughters, two sons and five strong men along with Frank Eager clambered off the train at the clearing just past High Falls and began the trek to their new home. The men folk took turns carrying Hilda the youngest of the children. Because of the spring runoff it was a muddy walk but it was a warm, sunny day and for the youngsters it was like going on a picnic. It was a touch first day. Although only the barest of necessities had been brought, everything had to be carried from the railway track to the cabins. It was back breaking work but by nightfall, in the spring of 1913, the first family had settled in Levack. With the knowledge that the railway spur line would be started in the fall and by then everything had to be ready to start the shaft sinking, there was no time to lose. Clearing and burning the trees and brush was the first job. Test pits and trenching was done and samples sent to he lab at Coniston. Log cabins were built at the mine site for stores and offices and to house some of the workers. After the spur line was built the very first freight car carried the compressor, drills, hose, powder and all the material and equipment needed to begin the shaft. It was to be a 24 hour operation, 7 days a week. Lumber came in for mine buildings; and the hoist, two seven foot drums capable of bringing up a four ton load was in place as soon as hand mucking the mine entrance was completed. An incline shaft at 65 degrees was the plan to 800 feet, with levels every 100 feet. Dozens of carpenters, many of them Finnish, arrived to build the mine and town. At first two log bunkhouses were built behind the original four log cabins, later larger two story buildings were erected with full services. The company steam locomotive was kept very busy shuttling stores and equipment from the main CP line to the town and mine site. Bolten’s General Store opened which sold everything from coal, nails and sardines to tailor made clothes or bolts of cloth and if the store hadn’t what you wanted, they would get it for you on the next train.

BMX Park/Jump Park

The site has been marked out and now we are going to measure it carefully and obtain proposals from two

companies for construction. As soon as we have that information, we will have

a residents’ meeting and accept as much input as we can get.

We would still like to see this built in 2012 so when we have the meeting, we

plan to make some decisions and get moving!

Follow-Up Notes

Last month, we highlighted townhouses on the site of the old public school.

ORACLE recently spoke with Mr. Muller and he brought us up to date by saying,

“I have obtained the necessary documents to continue work at the site. The

existing 7 units will be complete and offered for sale only—rental is not being

considered now.”

Mr. Muller was in Sudbury on August 24 to meet with some people and visit the

site. Unfortunately, ORACLE was not able to connect with Mr. Muller while he

was here.

We will have more news on the project in our October issue.

The derelict garage on Levack Street still stands because the By-Law

Department has been ordered to stand-down on this issue as it is now in

the hands of the Building Services Department. As you know, Building

Services had posted the building and sent the registered owner a letter

ordering compliance with building codes. The owner and the City are

now in talks to reach an agreement on compliance. ORACLE called

Building Services Manager, Mr. Guido Mazza a number of times. Mr.

Mazza has not returned ANY of ORACLE’s calls. The City did hire a

private contractor to secure the building (the door at the back was unlocked) and the windows have been boarded

up. Did you see the posting notice and the FOR RENT signs on the side of the building? Both signs have been

neatly removed, not ripped off as one would assume from vandals, leading to speculation that there is something

going on between the owner and the City that is being kept under wraps.
