Hello and a huge welcome to Fleetwood for Tram Sunday 2011.This year’s transport festival is packed full of wonderful attractions to entertain the whole family and just like all the successful 25 years it has been in existence it is themed upon transport of all shapes and sizes along with many other exciting things to see and do.

The absence of last year’s festival left a massive hole in the event calendar for exhibitors, visitors and the people of Fleetwood and beyond, giving us all a feeling that somehow summer was just in-complete. Now, with the road works almost finished the scene is set for our new light rail tramway service in 2012, enabling us to look towards the next historic phase of transportation in our age.

Sadly this will be the last year in the history of British built trams travelling through Fleetwood since 1885, but hopefully this festival will always carry the name “Tram Sunday” to mark our proud association with this type of electrical transportation from both the past and onward into the future.

n Civic ProcessionThe Civic Procession will commence at 11.00am from Fisherman’s Walk / Ash St and will include a large number of vehicles of all types. The Festival will be opened by Kelsey Crossley (Emmerdale Star) & Town Cryers. The procession will proceed down Lord St towards North Albert St and on towards the North Euston Hotel. Please keep back from the road as the procession goes by.

n Town Criers There will be a gathering of over 18 town criers from all around the country who will happily pose for photographs.

n Rally Control & Public AddressThe Rally Control Double Decker Bus is situated in Albert Square (Rowntree Clock Tower). The staff are there to help you in any way possible including locating exhibits and amenities, locating / looking after lost children etc.

Look out for moving engines and other vehicles at all times. Please obey any instructions when given by a Marshall or Steward.

Do not stand too close to engines or tractors running under their own power.

Please keep dogs on a lead.

Do not climb onto tractors, engines or other machines.

Notes for Visitors


Construction of the 8 mile electric Tram Road linking Fleetwood with Blackpool took place in 1898. Financed by a private consortium the line was one of the very first interurban tramways using overhead power collection. The Blackpool and Fleetwood Tram Road Company had its offices, power station and main depot in the locality of Bispham with Warbreck. Two small depots were also built in Fleetwood; one of which was connected to the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway tracks.

The company heavily promoted its invigorating ride over cliffs and through fields with coastal vistas to the millions of visitors arriving in Blackpool. A fleet totalling forty-one single deck trams, many of which were open sided to attract leisure rides during the summer months, were of a design already operating in the Isle of Man. This tramway between Douglas and Ramsay opened in 1894 had some commonality in its vehicle design and construction, as the Blackpool and Fleetwood Tram Road.

Blackpool Corporation took control of the Company assets in 1919 and assumed responsibility for

running the service between Blackpool’s Talbot Road Station and Fleetwood’s Pharos Street. The Corporation’s Tramways Department continued to use the company vehicles until ten new single deck ‘Pullman’ trams were delivered for the service in 1928. These came with pantograph current collectors (as opposed to the normal trolley poles). The roomy design remained popular with residents and visitors until withdrawal of the class in 1961.

In 1933 Blackpool’s transport operation acquired a new General Manager, Walter Luff. He set about transforming the town’s bus and tram system with comprehensive rebranding and deliveries of streamlined vehicles throughout the 1930s’. A fleet of sixty-five single deck ‘rail coaches’ built by English Electric of Preston and the Brush Engineering Company of Loughborough became the mainstay of seafront services linking Fleetwood with Blackpool. Remarkably a handful of the Brush built trams remain in service in 2011. Two are being saved for display in a Fleetwood project by Friends of Fleetwod Trams (along with several other types).

Successive generations of new trams have operated the tram service to Fleetwood in the postwar period. Twenty five ‘Coronation’ class cars arrived in 1952 but had very short working lives due to high maintenance and operating costs. In 1958 a prototype trailer tram was built using two English Electric rail coaches. This proved successful with a further nine trailer sets entering service on the eleven mile journey from Starr Gate terminus in Blackpool to Fleetwood Ferry. A few of these ‘Twin-Car’ sets are now operating their final season in 2011. They are all being withdrawn later this year.

Fleetwood’s Tramway Story

In the 1970s’ economic conditions required one man operation for trams and buses. Blackpool purchased a fleet of new single deck buses, but was constrained from purchasing new trams. An innovative approach by transport department engineers resulted in thirteen of the 1930s’ rail coaches being radically redesigned and lengthened to allow front entrances. with the tram driver taking fares and controlling centre exits. However the age of the original body frames and intensive wear on year round service meant that this was a short term solution.

By 1983 replacement of the thirteen ‘OMO’ cars forced Blackpool to request tenders for a small fleet of new trams. A prototype numbered 641 arrived in 1984 – built by Blackburn-based East Lancashire Coachbuilders who were also supplier of Blackpool’s new Atlantean double deck buses. A further seven new trams followed to ensure the year round tram service to Fleetwood would continue.These trams were called the ‘Centenary Cars’ - resulting from the prototype’s entry into service as part of the centenary year of Blackpool’s electric trams in 1985.

New disability access regulations and requirements for low floor public service vehicles twenty years on forced all transport operators to introduce buses (and trams) without requirement for vehicle access steps. Blackpool was fortunate in being granted significant government funding for replacement its tram fleet - none of which were suitable for low floor rebuilding. The extensive reconstruction of tram tracks allows low floor light rail vehicles to operate the Fleetwood service from 2012. These changes mean a new regulatory era throughout the line. Sixteen ‘Flexity2’ type articulated vehicles are due to arrive during 2011/12, built in Austria and Germany by Bombardier. The new vehicles will be extensively tested over the entire route during the winter months with full service being assumed by these vehicles from April next year. A small number of double deck trams are being modified to allow them to run on seasonal service – reflecting the popularity of Blackpool’s classic traditional trams with visitors. Much of the tram fleet is being disposed of at the end of 2011. Some examples being acquired for a new visitor attraction planned in Fleetwood by Friends of Fleetwood Trams in partnership with Fleetwood Festival of Transport CIC. The first being placed on display at the Ferry as ‘star of the 2011 Tram Sunday Festival.

Fleetwood is about to begin a new chapter in its long history of tram service through its commercial centre. The town’s close affinity with trams is uniquely celebrated with the annual festival – popularly known as ‘Tram Sunday’. This year the festival is returning under new management after a short break due to the extensive track reconstruction in 2010/11. Electric light rail service begins in April 2012 when the new cars are introduced to the public. Fleetwood Festival of Transport CIC is looking to build on the town’s tramway heritage. A core collection of traditional trams which have served Fleetwood over several decades offers strong possibilities for a permanent display – drawing new visitors to Fleetwood year round.

A unique bus which has been a regular visitor to our event over the last 25 years is the formerEdinburgh Corporation Transport bus YSG101 with fleet number 101.

It is 50 years old this year and is particularly unusual as it was built as you can see it todaywith three doorways. This was in the days before paying your fare to the driver became popular and so passengers entered the rear door rather than the front one next to the driver.

Later it was converted to single entrance and although it was a one-off, it was also the first to carry the new Y type body built by Alexander of Falkirk. Over the next 22 years, almost 3000 of

this design were built, virtually all with the more usual single door, on many different chassis, particularly Leyland and AEC but also Dennis, Volvo, Bedford and Albion. Y types were very common sight in Scotland and on Motorway routes to London but other significant operators in England were North Western, Potteries and Venture Transport of Consett.

British Commercial Vehicle Museum

The British Commercial

Vehicle Museum is a national

Museum which also attracts

visitors from around the

world. Based in Leyland, the

Museum displays over sixty

vehicles which span nearly

one hundred and twenty

years of automotive history.

Vehicles include a steam lawn

mower (an early product from

what became Leyland Motors);

steam powered traction

engines; trucks and vans; and

more conventional petrol and

diesel powered vehicles from

the 1920’s through to 2010. In

addition, buses are displayed

showing their development

from the early horse drawn

period right up to the modern

rear engine vehicles. There

is even a petrol electric bus

from 1925. Of course the

Museum also displays the

almost unique Popemobile

as used by the beatified Pope

John Paul who visited the UK

in 1982.

In addition to the vehicles,

the Museum contains over

250,000 images and artefacts

in its Archive

department. These

images show a

bygone age and

thus describe the

social changes

that have taken

place over the last

century.

Special exhibitions

for 2011 include

The Story of the

M6, Ribble Motors in Pictures,

The Leyland Motors Ladies,

and The Development of the

Diesel Engine. If this is not

enough, classic transport

films are shown in the cinema

and bespoke merchandise is

available in the Museum shop.

The Museum’s focus on road

transport has meant that it has

taken a keen interest in working

with the Fleetwood Transport

Festival Committee to expand

the public’s knowledge and

enjoyment of transport through

the ages. The UK has an

almost unique transport

heritage, which is recognised

throughout the world for its

innovation and quality. These

key ingredients are very evident

in the vehicles on display at the

Museum and in the heritage

fleet of trams seen running

between Blackpool and

Fleetwood.
