Progress as the driving force Materials
Perfection down to the slightest details
The basis of efficient overhead contact
line systems is the materials used for
the contact wire, messenger wire and
their support components. Certain
materials have especially proven them-
selves for various applications in tests
and daily practice.
Depending on the specific conditions,
we use electrolytic copper and copper
alloys for contact lines. The environ-
mentally incompatible copper-
cadmium alloys used in the past have
been replaced by copper alloyed with
silver or magnesium. Bronze or electro-
lytic copper are especially suitable for
the messenger wires. For cantilever
components, we offer copper-
aluminium alloys, cast aluminium
alloys, malleable cast iron and galva-
nized steel. Increasingly improved plas-
tics, silicone compound materials forinsulators and stainless steel are used.
Proven in daily use
In addition to our customers in
Germany, rail companies all over the
world use our overhead contact line
systems and products. They are the
result of our ongoing intensive research
and development work.

Contact line systems for mass transit
Concentrated energy for highly populated areas
Overhead contact lines with catenary suspension
Since the power requirements of mass
transit systems are especially high, they
are generally equipped with catenary-
supported overhead contact lines. They
are distinguished by excellent charac-
teristics for pantograph passage and a
large variety in the contact wire and
messenger wire cross sections ideal
prerequisites for efficient urban trafficwith close headways and higher
running speeds.
Low life-cycle costs
By minimizing the required number of
supports, fewer poles and foundations
are needed. Other advantages of
overhead contact lines with catenaries
are the high operational reliability and
the characteristically low wear on the
contact line and rolling stock so you
benefit from significantly increased
maintenance cycles. The catenary
systems allow, among other things, the
use of a second messenger wire for
higher power transfer with less power
loss and fewer feeder points. The
contact wire, which is made of copper
or copper alloys, and the messenger
wire, consisting of copper or bronze
wire, are installed under tension inorder to take full advantage of the
excellent traversing characteristic
offered by an overhead contact line
with catenary.
Latest technologies and
proven materials
In our innovative design, we use tubes
and rods made of glass-reinforced
plastic and fittings of copper-
aluminium alloy. They are fully insu-
lating and corrosion-resistant, which is
why they require only minimum main-
tenance.
In an alternative design, we use
aluminium as the material for the canti-
levers and fittings.
With the third variant, galvanized steel
is used for the cantilever and malleablecast iron for the fittings.
For aluminium or steel cantilevers as
well as cross spans and tensioning
systems, we use composite, cast resin
or porcelain insulators and GRP loop
insulators.

Inconspicuous in the cityscape Trolley-type contact lines
Save wherever you can!
Siemens has developed overhead
contact lines and components for a
mass transit solution that is cost-effi-
cient for operations with medium
passenger loading and that fits incon-
spicuously within the cityscape. Our
trolley-type contact lines eliminate the
need for a continuous messenger wire
and are especially well-suited for urban
rail modes with low running speeds and
relatively low power requirements,
which call only for small contact-wire
cross sections. Especially complex
trackworks, such as intersections in
inner-city areas, are realized with
trolley-type contact wires.
Consistently high traversing quality
on all lines
At trolley-type contact lines, the contact
wire is suspended from cross-track cate-
naries, longitudinal span wires or single
cantilever supports. The distinguishing
feature of a tensioned contact wire is its
excellent endurance with regard to
tensile force and contact wire sag and
that at all temperatures. By installing
stitch suspensions or bridle-and-pulleys
at the supports, we are able not only to
reduce the number of poles, but also to
increase and optimally dimension the
tension sections for a consistently
high traversing quality meeting the
requirements of light rail systems.
Economical and built for the task
In short tension lengths or subordinate
rail systems, however, we use an even
lower-cost variant: Trolley-type contact
lines tensioned with springs. Although
their design permits only shorter
spacing of supports, short tension
sections and lower running speeds,
these limitations are of no consequence
here. Quite unlike the savings which
you will gain by using this inexpensive
design.

Systems and Applications
Power in the tightest spaces
Overhead contact lines in tunnels
Mass transit systems often run in
tunnels nowadays, especially in large
cities and population centres. The
overhead contact lines then form the
continuation of the system above
ground. These are subject to the same
requirements as a "normal" alignment
despite the space restrictions. In most
cases, the limited space in tunnels doesnot permit the use of a catenary
without modifications.
Room for in-house developments
Siemens also masters difficult condi-
tions like these: with customized
designs and components developed
especially for them.
Tunnels with sufficient heights willpermit the installation of a catenary
with reduced system height and
suitably reduced support spacing. In
this case, the catenary can be
suspended from cantilevers attached to
soffit posts or head spans.
If space restrictions permit only a
contact wire without a messenger wire,
we use the elastic support to attach the
contact wire. The advantage of this in-
house development: it guarantees an
elastic suspension and offers panto-
graph traversing qualities comparable
to those of an overhead contact line
with catenary. Line feeders connectedto the contact wire at short intervals by
means of conductive droppers ensure
sufficient current-carrying capacity.
Concepts for limited space
With our broad spectrum of individual
solutions, we are very well equipped to
install all of the tensioning equipment,
insulated overlaps and disconnectors
you need for efficient transport opera-
tion even in tunnels with particularly
unfavourable space conditions. In view
of frequently adverse climate condi-
tions we use corrosion-resistant
components having the long-term
capability to withstand stray currents,
which occur with traction power return
currents and are damaging to material.
Overhead conductor rails
The placement of a conductor rail with
flexurally-stiff copper profile on the
tunnel roof is another Siemens develop-
ment and a space-saving alternative to
the installation of overhead contact
lines in the tunnel. The conductor rails
can be traversed with standard panto-
graphs, do not require any tensioning
equipment, and are installed in the
form of a meandering sinusoidal curve.
Temperature fluctuations will then vary
the lateral deflection. No further
measures to compensate for changes in
length are necessary. Reinforcing
feeders are seldom required.

Even a vehicle needs a home
Contact line systems for maintenance facilities and workshops
For smooth daily operations
Maintenance facilities and workshops
are especially important for all railway
operations. This is where the vehicles
are maintained and repaired as required
by law to meet the basic prerequisites
for the safety of passengers, transport
goods and property.
Your schedule runs on time
The contact lines developed by Siemens
meet the exact requirements of mainte-
nance facilities. Maintenance, service
and repairs can thus be carried out with
the highest efficiency. Whether for
standing areas or workshops, our
contact line systems ensure smooth
operation and also are safe andeconomical. We use, for example,
catenary systems for arrival, run-
through and loop tracks because of the
higher current load. For standing areas
and repair shops, where only low
speeds are permitted, trolley-type
contact lines are used as a cost-effec-
tive solution. And for each design, you
have the choice between a construction
with cross spans with higher pole
heights or aluminium portals with
lower pole heights. The lower pole
height is especially to be recommended
whenever urban planning consider-ations play a major role.
The safety of your employees is your
foremost concern
At Siemens, we place a great deal of
emphasis on safety. With our lifting
contact lines for lifting work bays, even
difficult maintenance work can be
performed without problem the ideal
solution for low-floor vehicles, with, at
the same time, the highest standards
for occupational safety and comfort. In
order to save you unnecessary costs,
the contact lines in these variants are
lifted only in certain sections and within
predefined lengths. For activities
involving roof work platforms we have
also developed contact lines with
special safety features. These lines are
disconnected and earthed before the
start of work for safe vehicle mainte-
nance at roof level. Additional neutral
sections complete our comprehensivesafety concept.

1-10 Siemens Product Catalog 2008: Contact Line Equipment for Mass Transit
Systems and Applications
Robust Contact line systems for railways in
industry and mining
Overhead contact lines for open-cast mining
The electrification of railways in
industry and mining companies is often
more economical than operations with
diesel-powered vehicles. Various
studies conducted all over the world
have shown that the advantages of the
electrification of industrial railways far
outweigh their higher investment costs
when viewed over the life cycle of the
systems. Siemens is able to design and
implement electrification ideas that are
optimized for low operating costs.
There is a variety of contact line designs
suitable for this type of application.
These systems range from 1200 V AC to
6600 V AC and, like all other electrifica-
tion projects, are dependent on a
number of site-related parameters. The
majority of these applications will call
for tensioned overhead contact lines
with catenary suspension some of
them with additional line feeders.
Tensioned trolley-type contact lines are
sometimes used as well, e.g. at bulk
material bunkers or loading tracks.
Siemens builds stope-type contact lines
when the track and energy supply
within an open-cast mining area must
be movable.
For loading large-capacity wagons with
coal or other bulk goods, side contact
lines are used in the loading areas of
power plants and open-cast mines.
To the technical design the same princi-
ples apply as in public transport.

1For more productivity in open-cast mining
Truck trolley systems
Put your trucks "on-line" - and benefit from greater economic efficiency
Open-cast mining is the classic field of
operation for diesel-electric powered
trucks. But the enormously high fuel
consumption and the diesel exhaust
emissions often lead to problems
both economic and ecological. These
problems are solved convincingly by
the truck trolley systems from Siemens,
which harness electric power to relieve
the diesel drives, for example, on steep
ramps in the mine. Truck trolleys are
powerful, energy-efficient and flexible.
The solution for your company and
for the environment
The most effective solution in open-
cast mining is to put your trucks on an
overhead contact line. The contact wiresupplies electrical energy to the
vehicles when they climb ramps and
have to work under full load. Energy
that is generated far away from the
mine, with greater efficiency and with
less environmental impact. Energy that
takes the load off the diesel drive on
ramps, allows higher payloads and
allows a higher running speed at the
same time. Our Truck trolley system
saves your money with shorter round
trip times for your trucks and in mainte-
nance and a longer life of your trucks.
Higher voltage
for lower catenary load
Our contact line system operates with a
voltage of DC 2600 V instead of the
DC 1200 V to DC 1600 V previously
used. Consequently, less current has to
be carried, lowering the load on the
catenary and ensuring longer system
life. Naturally, the truck trolley systemoffers a high safety standard for your
employees and very low maintenance
requirements.
Flexibility saves time and money
A mine changes constantly. The place
where ore and minerals are recovered is
always moving in the process. The
transport routes have to be altered
accordingly. For this reason the truck
trolley system in a lot of mines has to be
relocated about every 18 months. Theoverhead contact line systems can be
moved quickly and flexibly.
No problem for our substation
modules, which are delivered pre-
tested to the site. These containerized
units permit easy and inexpensive relo-
cation.
Experience worth trusting
Truck trolley solutions for open-cast
mining from Siemens are convincing
economically and ecologically thats
what the many users around the world
say. And its not surprising, because no
other system can carry anywhere near
the same amount of power per kilo-
meter. That, too, is a result of years of
experience, technical expertise and
unceasing innovation.

Systems and Applications
Put on the right track - Conductor rail systems
All good things come in threes - Third rail
Undergrounds and tramways operating
for the most part in tunnels or on rights-
of-way not accessible to the public
frequently have a third rail that is
arranged in parallel to the running rail
and supplies traction power to the
vehicle.
Safe current collection
Borne by insulating supports attached
to the sleepers or to structures,
conductor rails can be contacted from
different sides by current collectors. In
new systems, current collection from
underneath has become the most
commonly used method: the rail can be
completely covered, cannot be touched
accidentally, and is protected outdoors
from precipitation.
Customized designs
Siemens offers "third rails" in various
different designs.
The conductor rail is made of soft steel
and has a shape similar to that of the
running rail. Higher traction unit
ratings call for the use of Siemens
aluminium-stainless steel compound
rails with a higher electrical conduc-tivity and higher continuous current
ratings. As a result, excellent operating
experiences with these aluminium-
stainless steel compound rails have
enabled them to become the standard
choice for new facilities to a great
extent.
Ahead over the entire length
Conductor rails of conventional soft
steel design are welded, aluminium-
stainless steel compound rails are
connected current-carrying with
aluminium straps.
Expansion joints are used to compen-
sate for changes in length due to
temperature fluctuations. In suchcases, the "third rail" runs in the appro-
priately shaped insulated mountings in
the conductor rail supports.
Gaps with suitable ramps at points and
cross-overs ensure a smooth run-in of
the collector shoe and thus low wear.
We provide a product spectrum which
meets different requirements regarding
technical specifiacation, safety require-ments and costs.

2Product designations
The product designations are the
names customarily used in contact lineconstruction. It cannot be avoided,
however, that different product types
may be listed under the same nominal
designation. To ensure unambiguous
identification, each part is given a
machine-readable factory designation
which begins with the preliminary
number 8WL and consists of a four-digitnumber followed by a hyphen and a
further digit (or a number and a letter).
These identify the various types of a
specific product, for example, if it is
available in different materials or sizes.
Drawings in different scales are also
connected to the products listed andindicate the major dimensions and
functions of the products.
In the drawings, the load direction is
indicated with F.
