Change in every organization is inevitable. This is especially true in the field of law enforcement. Leaders in all ranks and assignments need to embrace change in order to be successful. From creating and communicating a vision to moving forward and inspecting results, this plenary covers real-world examples of how details, divisions and departments have been redirected through, sometimes significant, change. Discussion will include women in leadership roles, what women bring to the profession and setting oneself up for future assignments, promotions and success.

EXPLORING THE GENDER AND GENERATIONAL DIVIDE

1:30 pm to 3:00 pm | Pacific BPresenter: Tammy Hughes, CEO, Claire Raines Associates

Business results depend on your people. What worked a few years ago for motivating, coaching, and leading people in their twenties is off-base for those in their twenties today—and today’s forty-year-olds are different from forty-year-olds a decade ago. To thrive—even to survive—today’s leaders must be masterful at managing, motivating, and retaining people from all generations and values groups.

This lively, interactive session will get everyone in the room involved and engaged—and ready to apply what they’ve learned when they walk out the door.

If you’re attending this session, please be sure to take the Values & Influence Assessment® before you arrive.

It just takes 10 minutes on your laptop, iPad or smartphone. Go to www.generationsatwork.com/assessment.php. Group code: capolice18511.

After you take the assessment and attend the session, you will have answers to these questions:

• Are you typical of your generation, or are your values different than most of those who grew up in the same era?

• Is there one values group that particularly challenges you?

• How can you target your messages to increase your effectiveness and impact results?

To be successful, we need to understand people’s values and become masterful at targeting our messages with those values in mind.

EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION: AN ESSENTIAL LEADERSHIP SKILL

3:30 pm to 5:00 pm | Pacific APresenter: Connie Almond, Liebert Cassidy Whitmore

Successful leaders must have clear and communicated ideas about what they want to achieve and how they expect the team to perform. Communicating objectives, needs, resources, and vision is paramount to the

success of your team and organization. This session will provide practical strategies to effectively communicate as a leader and will emphasize practice over theory, including best practices for overcoming challenges.

LEADERSHIP LESSONS

3:30 pm to 5:00 pm | Pacific BPresenter: Colleene Preciado, Chief Probation Officer (ret.)

This workshop will delve into what is inside a leader that makes them suited for and successful in leadership. We will explore the how vs. the what in leadership, and the concepts of being vs. becoming effective leaders.

The field of leadership training is saturated with endless opportunities to find the magic bullet on leadership! We are lead to believe if we just take certain training, go to a command college or get an advanced degree we are prepared to be competent leaders! If true, why do we still see many people in leadership positions with extensive training and academic achievements still not capable or successful as leaders?

Workshop participants will be prompted to engage in a spirited discussion on what makes an extraordinary leader and how they inspire others to become leaders themselves.

CRITICAL INCIDENT PANEL

LIVING AUTHENTICALLY

10:30 am to 12:00 pm | Pacific BPresenter: Kristin Ziman, Commander, Aurora PD

We often spend too much time being who we think we are supposed to be that we forget who we really are. Learn how to be comfortable with standing out — and start using the skills and gifts unique to you. This session will show you that once you start being who you really are, you will become better at what you do and enjoy life and work so much more.

CLOSING PLENARY

GenderSpeak1:00 pm to 2:00 pm | Pacific Ballroom C&DPresenter: Tammy Hughes, The Heim Group

Are there people you work with that easily take credit for their accomplishments and others who don’t play up their successes? Does it seem to take some people forever to get to the point, while others bull doze to the bottom line? And why is it that aggressive behavior from some is ruled an effective leadership style and yet from another is viewed as rude and pushy? In GenderSpeak, you will learn that men and women grow up in different cultures and learn different lessons about “appropriate” behavior, teamwork, problem solving, and leadership. These differences are often difficult to see — let alone manage. This session will address the central factors that drive gender-related communication problems and emphasizes the importance of men and women understanding and valuing each other’s strengths.
