2019-2020 Training Event Catalog
www.niacc.edu/continuing-education/business-partnership 1
Greetings Business Partners,
Thank you for being part of NIACC’s 2019-2020 Business Partnership! I’d like to welcome our members, both new and returning, as we enter a new year of collaborative pro-fessional development. This year is special, as it marks the 25th anniversary of the Business Partnership.
When members came together in April for our annual planning session, they voted on training priorities for the 2019-2020 season. Those votes reflected a strong demand for a variety of courses that appeal to different levels within an organization. Among the topics chosen are performance man-agement, navigating change, mentoring/developing internal talent, emo-tional intelligence, interpersonal communication, and employment law. This season’s line-up was designed with these topics in mind. You will hear from top-ranked trainers on these and other important subjects. All of the Business Partnership classes will be offered in person and online (both via livestream and recording). New for 2019-2020, there will now be two face-to-face sessions of each class, one morning and one afternoon. I hope this affords you more flexibility as you schedule your employees to attend Business Partnership offerings.
Please spend some time exploring this catalog, where you will find detailed infor-mation about the 2019-2020 speakers and course offerings. I encourage you and your employees to mark your calendars and register early for the courses you plan to attend. You can look forward to a highly engaging and relevant Business Part-nership season.
Your partner in training, Jamie Malek Business Partnership Program Manager
Welcome to the Business Partnership!

A Collaborative Approach to Workforce Training The Business Partnership is designed to give our members access and exposure to quality training programs led by high-profile national and regional trainers. Our goal is to offer a wide variety of topics and enhance employee access by delivering classes through both face-to-face and distance learning approaches. Each year the NIACC Continuing Education Department collaborates with local North Iowa businesses to identify com-mon training needs. Collectively, these businesses leverage funding for employee professional development. Each member of our partnership contributes toward an annual operating budget for trainers, venues, livestreaming, and more.
Inclement Weather Policy: The Business Partnership will follow NIACC’s weather guidelines. When NIACC is closed due to inclement weather, Business Partner-ship classes will also be canceled. Tune in to local television or radio for closing announcements.

Every year is full of new opportunities to better ourselves, our organization, and our communities.
While not all things in life are certain, one thing we can count on to remain constant in the ebb and flow of every business is change. To be the best we can be, we must know how to handle change.
Change is constant and leaders at all levels must be able to manage transitions that fol-low. Assisting and leading others through all types of change takes awareness, knowledge, skill, and reinforcement of attitudes and be-haviors by those in leadership roles.

Change is a fact of life. Job changes, promo-tions, single parenting, aging parents—today’s common stresses at work and home may leave you feeling helpless, angry, or de-pressed.
You can’t always control change, but you can control your response to it. Stress is a natural part of your personal and work life. Some aspects of it are positive in that the conditions leading to stress often get you to take action when you might not other-wise. However, stress itself may lead to or contribute to a number of problems that make your life more difficult both at home and in the workplace.

In today’s workplace, one in five supervisors or managers can expect to be named in some form of employment-related charge or litigation. Often, these employment-related claims result in employer liability as well as sub-stantial legal expense. It may not be possi-ble to eliminate all potential employment litigation; however, all managers and su-pervisors can take steps to reduce legal ex-posure. In this session, we’ll cover these six legal pitfalls to avoid: (1) Improper Inter-viewing & Hiring, (2)Poor Documentation, (3) Inaccurate or Inflated Appraisals, (4) Pri-vacy/Confidentiality Breaches, (5) Inappro-priate Social Media or Cell Phone Use, and (6) Incorrect Employee Discipline.
