When I walked the hallways of Immaculate for the first time in October 2008, I was impressed by the friendli-ness and politeness of the students. As I visited classrooms and became acquainted with the teachers I was inspired by their dedication and excellence in teaching. Four years later, it’s even more rewarding because now I know the students by name; and, if they aren’t rushing to class they’ll take a minute to talk about the previous night’s game, share a recent school experience, or mention what they’re learning in the classroom. When it’s one of our 15 international students who have joined the Immaculate family I try to greet them in their native language of Chinese, Portuguese or German.

One of my first stops is usually Bob Plumb’s gym class where I can serve a few over the volleyball net. Then it’s on to Joe Muchanski or Nanci Stockmann’s room where I’ll be challenged with a Social Studies or current events question. Most times Nanci is quick to provide a helpful hint. Fortunately, when I go into Lynn Lemme’s math class she never asks me to solve any Pre-Calculus problems! If I make it to Marie Proverb’s Spanish class at the bell I will have the opportunity to join the class for opening prayer.

As I head upstairs, I’m always delighted by the sounds of the concert choir coming from Mary Raymond’s (Alum ’77) room and the chance to brush up on my French in Madame Grover’s class. In Kevin Dunleavy’s science classes and labs I typically learn a new fact about the environment or see Betsy Murphy’s Bio class using Smart Board technology. Some may say that’s how 9 out of 10 students scored a “5” on their AP Bio exams last year; but, truly what makes great students are great teachers. And, here at Immaculate there is no shortage of them!

At the far end of the third floor hallway, I can visit Fr. Cole’s religion class and then check out the latest photos on Maureen Arse-nault’s (Alum ’67) door. Next door to Maureen is Dana Pinckney (Alum ’01). Just like Maureen, Dana came back to provide the same excellent education she received as a student at Immaculate. Her classroom boasts the best view of Mustang Valley, the new baseball dugouts and the beautifully renovated softball field. This fall, as I walk into the classrooms, all students will be utilizing their own iPads. These will undoubtedly take Immaculate’s 21st Century Learning environment to a new level.

There are lots of changes taking place that have enhanced the facility and the overall program at Immaculate, thanks to the gener-ous support and partnership of faculty, staff, alumni, parents, friends and board members who have partnered with Immaculate to make a good school even better. The facility is being renovated, our students are using leading edge technology in the classrooms; but, the Mission to nurture the development of the whole student remains unchanged. We value our traditions and legacy, strive to keep the family atmosphere and are grounded in the values of respect, responsibility and reverence in our daily lives as Mustangs.

Whether you’re just discovering IHS or if you are an alumnus who hasn’t visited in a while, you have an open invitation to join me for a school tour. During your visit, you’ll experience for yourself the friendliness of our students, an incredible teaching staff and a nurturing learning environment in our classrooms. Maybe you’ll even have the solution to one of Mrs. Lemme’s Pre-Calculus prob-lems. In the meantime, take a few minutes to tour through the pages of Traditions and share in the excitement of Mustang Pride!

As I complete my term as Chair of the Immaculate High School Advisory Board I want to highlight some of the accomplishments that have been achieved over these past four years with an emphasis on this past academic year’s accomplishments. Most importantly Immaculate High School achieved full accreditation by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges for 10 years. New administrative leadership was recruited with the arrival of Kathleen Casey as President and Joe Carmen as Principal preceded by Dan Murphy. The Advisory Board has been strengthened with new members Jack S. C. Fong, M.D., Jonathan Seaman, Shaun Budnik, Brian Crotty and Tom Saadi. Bylaws have been revised and term limits are now in effect, giving the Advisory Board the opportunity to add new members with skills and expertise needed by the school.

I want to thank the Board Committee Chairs for their wisdom and outstanding support during my term as chair. They supported the administration, faculty and students of the school both intellectually and financially. Our fundraising has increased from 30K per year to over 200K. This success is the result of great efforts by administration, faculty, and our Board Development Committee headed by Vice-Chair Anthony Rizzo Jr. Tony has done an outstanding job recruiting new members to the committee who help him and others promote the school’s fundraising goals. It is with a great deal of pleasure that I report that our Board and the Diocese of Bridgeport has accepted the recommendation that Anthony Rizzo Jr. succeed me as the next chair of the school’s Advisory Board. Tony will bring a great deal of enthusiasm, loyalty and success to IHS.

Our board’s Facility Committee under Mike Mazzucco, with significant support from Mustang All-Sports Club President Bobby Nolan and a great group of volunteers has accomplished the impossible. They spearheaded the bleacher project and added new dugouts to our baseball field. The school’s finances have improved significantly over these four years with the goal of operating at an annual break-even budget. We have completed our first audit since 2007 with no material deficiencies. The school has increased enrollment, grown scholarship support, implemented technology and improved its operating performance.

In closing, let me first again thank my colleagues on the Advisory board, the Administration especially Kathleen Casey and Joe Carmen, the faculty and students for their great work and success these past four years and this year in particular. Our students continue to impress with their academic achievements, college admissions and athletic championships. They achieve these successes while maintaining their spiritual and community involvement. All our volunteers, parents and staff have also contributed to IHS’ success these past four years and they are to be commended. Ralph McIntosh, an alumnus, board member and former chair of our facility committee has decided to retire from the board. The school and the board want to thank him for his many years of service and support. As you will read in this report, IHS has had another outstanding year. It has been my honor to serve as your board chair.

2011-2012 highlights:• IHS students performed over 17,700 hours of community service this year. Giving back to the community and helping others has always been an important facet of the IHS experience and this year was no exception. In addition to participating in school-sponsored service activities such as Midnight Runs and Student Ambassador duties, students reached out into our communities and served as volunteers at the Special Olympics, American Cancer Society Relay for Life, Pope John Paul Rehabilitation Center, Bethel Health Care Center, Morning Glory Breakfast Program, and many other worthwhile parish and community activities.• IHS students, parents and faculty participated in the March for Life in Washington, DC.• Twelve IHS students were installed as eucharistic ministers. These students continued to serve at all school Masses throughout the year.• IHS received a $10,000 grant to plan and implement the “Rachel’s Challenge” program and club. The funds will be used for the upcoming 2012-13 school year to inspire, equip and empower every person to create a per-manent, positive culture change in our school, business and community by starting a chain reaction of kindness, compassion and sharing. Once established at IHS, our students will bring the program to our partner elementary schools.

REPRINTED FROM THE NEWS-TIMES May 8, 2011 By Brian Koonz

Joey Collins is the first one to admit he’s got it pretty good. His family loves him. He was valedictorian at Immaculate High School. And he’s a proud member of St. Joseph’s Church in Brookfield, the parish that feeds the world. “I run cross coun-

try, indoor track, and outdoor track at Im-maculate, so we run through the city streets sometimes,” Joey said. “It was my freshman year two years ago when I first found out about the Dorothy Day (Hospitality) House,” As Joey ran through the Spring Street neigh-borhood in Danbury, he saw a different view of the world. He saw the Dorothy Day House as a sanctuary for people who needed a hot meal or a warm bed. Or both. And the reality

ached inside him. “Someone should do something about this,” Joey went home and told his mom, Maria Col-lins. Like most moms -- it’s why we celebrate Mother’s Day, after all -- she knew just what to say. “I know,” Maria Collins told her young-est child as she looked him in the eye. “How about you?” Joey chewed on the idea, but not for long. He knew she was right. And so, from a couple of training runs through downtown Danbury, “Casseroles for the Hungry” was born. Joey was determined to help feed the stomachs -- and the souls -- of the less fortu-nate. That was early in 2009. Through April 2011, Joey and the folks at St. Joseph’s have made 320 casseroles, each one big enough to feed 25 people. For those keeping track at home, that’s 8,000 meals that have been do-nated to the Dorothy Day Hospitality House. And it all started with a high school kid who cared enough to help. But more than that, “Casseroles for the Hungry” took off because Joey convinced a congregation one casserole

mattered. And then another. And another. Before you knew it, St. Joseph’s needed a waiting list for its casserole-makers because the commercial-sized freezers at the Dorothy Day House couldn’t hold all their love. This is why St. Joseph’s is the parish that feeds the world -- or at least, hundreds of people in Greater Danbury who need a little help. “It’s very humbling when you go to Dorothy Day and the people are so grateful for what you’ve done for them,” Joey said. “I think I get more out of it than they do. It really makes me feel good inside,” This isn’t about empty community service hours, you see. It’s about the goodwill that comes from serving dinner with dignity on Spring Street, the most important turn on those old training runs. This is the real bless-ing for Joey Collins, that rare opportunity to give the less fortunate a hot meal, and the rest of us food for thought. Joseph Collins is the Class of 2012’s valedicto-rian. He plans to attend St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, PA in the fall.

A BREAK FROM TRADITION By Principal Joe CarmenTeacher talks. Student listens. Teacher gives assignment. Student does homework. Teacher gives test. Student takes test. Bell rings. Classes change. Next class. New subject. Same old thing.

This is different. Welcome to IHS... a 21st Century Learning Community!

Immaculate High School is changing the educational paradigm to embrace 21st Century Learning. Most visible is our full school implementation of a 1:1 iPad initiative for the upcoming school year. While being one of the first schools, public or private to initiate a full school implementation in the state and country, we believe that this enhancement is just one of many tools we will be utilizing to prepare our IHS graduates for success in college and life. 21st Century Learning is much more.

It is the mastery of core subjects and 21st century themes that are essential to student success. Core subjects include English, Religion, World Languages, Fine Arts, Mathematics, Economics, Science, Technology, Engineering, Geography, History, lifetime Physical Fitness, Government and Civics. In addition, we will promote an understanding of academic content at much higher levels by weaving 21st century interdisciplinary themes into core subjects: • Global Awareness • Financial, Economic, Business and Entrepreneurial Literacy • Spiritual Development • Civic Literacy • Health Literacy • Environmental Literacy

Learning and innovation skills are what separate students who are prepared for increasingly complex life and work environments in today’s world and those who are not. They include: Creativity and Innovation, Critical Thinking and Problem Solving, Communication and Col-laboration.

Today, we live in a technology and media-driven environment, marked by access to an abundance of information, rapid changes in technology tools and the ability to collaborate and make individual contributions on an unprecedented scale. Effective citizens and workers must be able to exhibit a range of functional and critical thinking skills, such as: • Information Literacy • Media Literacy • ICT (Information, Communica-tions and Technology) Literacy • Life and Career Skills

Today’s life and work environments require far more than thinking skills and content knowledge. The ability to navigate the complex life and work environments in the globally competitive information age requires students to pay rigorous attention to developing adequate life and career skills, such as: • Flexibility and Adaptability • Initiative and Self-Direction • Social and Cross-Cultural Skills • Productivity and Accountability • Leadership and Responsibility

Our curriculum is being rewritten to adopt the national Common Core State Standards and infuse these concepts into what and how we teach. Textbooks are evolving into iBooks and we will soon launch our own IHS app.

While these changes may be intimidating at times, what is comforting to know is what will not change are our core beliefs of Reverence, Respect and Responsibility being woven into all we do. What will not change is the tradition of graduating amazing students prepared for success, no matter the environment in which they find themselves. Thank you for your continued support of IHS.

“...the teachers of Immaculate are a rare breed who inspire your student body to be the best.” George Aiello ’89

What Immaculate Means to Me... “There are different types of learning communities. Some

are merely places, and some are families. At a place of learning, there is competition and an ever-present search for personal profit. This is not Immaculate. Immaculate is a family of learning. A family does not flourish by compe-tition, rather through cooperation. During my four years at Immaculate, I always felt immersed in this cooperative

spirit. On the playing field, on stage, in the classroom, and in the chapel I not only knew someone was there to aid me, but also that I had the ability to help others. This was an empowering feeling for me as a young person. It gave me confidence when I was afraid to branch out and a sense of direction when I was unsure how to best use the gifts.” JAVIER SOEGAARD ’06

“She is a woman who abides by her princi-ples.” This was how Assistant Principal Mary Ann Foncello was described in Immaculate’s 1970 yearbook. So great is her belief in Cath-olic education that Mary Ann has served it in roles ranging from student to teacher to ad-ministrator. She began her Catholic educa-tion at St. Peter’s in Danbury and continued her studies at Immaculate which she credits

with providing the educational foundation she needed to suc-ceed at Boston College, where she earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology summa cum laude and a Master of Science in Teaching Degree with distinction. After teaching at Boston College High School for several years, she had a personal home-coming when she returned to Immaculate to teach Biology in the early 1980’s.

Mary Ann has served IHS in many capacities. She developed the first AP Biology course, which continues with great success, served as a class advisor and an advisor to both the National Honor Society and Science Club, and was the administrator of the Bookstore. She also served as the advisor for the Boeh-ringer-Ingleheim sponsored Partners in Science and Scientific Scholars Programs, which included her conducting DNA re-search for two summers at the pharmaceutical company. Mary Ann has the distinction of having worked for or been a student under every IHS Principal and has also served as the Interim Principal for a semester.

She has witnessed many changes in the tools available to teach-ers and students while at IHS including: slide rules evolving into calculators and later into iPads, hard cover books becoming e-books, blackboards being replaced by smart boards, and her former Biology classroom being transformed into the Science Technology Lab.

Mary Ann agrees that “the more things change, the more they stay the same. IHS continues to live its mission of developing the whole student. In addition to providing our students with a solid educational foundation, we instill in them a strong sense of morality, a solid work ethic and a willingness to serve others. Most importantly, Immaculate’s students are in an environment where they can learn about and practice their Catholic faith.”

Although she’s now an administrator, Mary Ann describes her-self as a teacher and a lifelong learner. “It is an exciting time to be in education where advances in technology have introduced many new possibilities for teaching and learning. IHS is em-bracing the future, preparing students to succeed in a global world while remaining true to its core values,” she states.

Mary Ann encourages students, faculty and alumni to look proudly upon Immaculate’s rich tradition and, in building upon that tradition, help guide Immaculate to an even brighter future.

Mary Ann (Grandieri) Foncello graduated from IHS in 1970. She was a science teacher at Immaculate for 22 years and in 2004 be-came the Assistant Principal. She is also the parent of an alumnus, Martin Foncello Jr. ’96.

“Immaculate proved to be an environment where every stu-dent not only succeeded, but they thrived. I could not easily therefore, share one single moment in which I was happiest, for my entire four years were utterly enjoyable and construc-tive. Staffed by a faculty of educators who not only are knowl-edgeable in their subject, but who also actually care about their students and their futures, I always felt my happiness and suc-cess was a top priority. Immaculate was a small and familial institution where I and every student had the ability to shape themselves in every aspect of their lives. Hard work, dedication and respect were demanded not only in the classroom, but also

in the school chapel, the music room, and on the playing field. Upon my arrival to college, I found myself in an environment of 20,000 people; to say I was a little overwhelmed is an understatement. However, Immaculate High School imbued in me the ability to balance all aspects of my life. I had spent four years in an environment where self-discipline was the cornerstone of every class and extreme involvement was the norm. Furthermore, in those moments when I found myself the most homesick, my faith served as a source of comfort. The ability to find a church and instantly feel at home with the familiarity of my Catholic faith, I give credit to the strong and spiritually supportive community so ever present at Immaculate High School. While looking back and summarizing my high school experience, the token phrase ‘If I could do it all over again..’ comes to mind; and I can say with confidence and pride that If I could do it all over again …I would choose Immaculate High school every time.” ELIZABETH KEATING ’11, UNIVERSITY OF DELAWARE

What Immaculate Means to Me...

“The IHS mission statement is far more than words on a sheet of paper; it is truly the phi-losophy of the school. On a daily basis it is evident that the faculty and staff accomplish the mission of educating the whole student...Most of all, Immaculate is a family. It is made up of caring and highly-educated faculty and administration, dedicated students and car-ing and supportive parents.” PAT & KEN STEVENS, PARENTS OF JULIA ’14, CHRIS-TOPHER ’10, AND KATE ’12 (pictured)

“I recently graduated from the University of New England, followed up graduation with a summer long internship at the Marine Animal Rehabilitation Center caring for seal pups. Following the internship I landed a full time job at an animal hospital up in Maine. It has been an amazing experience and very in-teresting to get another view on animal care. I have recently been accepted into an internship program at the Aquarium of the Pacific in California. I look forward to continuing to persue my dreams in the marine biology/aquaculture field. I could not be where I am today without the strong science background I had received from Immaculate, and especial-ly Mr. Dunleavy and the continuous support of my family.” NICOLE GREENWOOD ’07

My, how things have changed!

I was a freshman when the first class graduated from Immaculate. I remem-ber homerooms segregated by sex, the up staircases and the down staircase, gym uniforms, Sr. Evangelista (later Sr. Ann Gilson) measuring skirt lengths, and proms in the cafeteria. We had the Pep Club instead of cheerleaders, the mud pit that is now Mus-tang Valley, and the baseball field was where the Pope John Paul facility currently stands. There were over 700 students in the building, a waiting list to get in, a hard-nosed principal (Father Hossan), and it was GREAT! Yes, we had silent study halls in classrooms, 3 tracks of study, and we weren’t allowed to go to our lockers between classes, but we coped. There was a camaraderie and school spirit that defined the Immaculate community.

This year that Mustang pride was regenerated as the boys’ bas-ketball team dominated play and won the state title at Mohegan Sun (not Central Connecticut). Paul and Abe were no longer broadcasting from the top of the bleachers; the play-by-plays were being tweeted and sent via iPhones. For the first time in a long time, you had to get to the gym early to get a seat. State titles and records are regularly won in sports that weren’t offered “back in the day”. Additionally, today Immaculate students can benefit from an outstanding visual and performing arts depart-ment. Broadway-caliber musicals resonate in the gym, and our students frequently garner awards and recognition for their writing, musical, and theatrical endeavors. Academically, things are also changing. Instead of general, prep and honors levels, students can enroll in prep, honors, AP, and/or virtual studies. Yes, the 21st century has arrived at 73 Southern Boulevard. iPads are being introduced in classes next year. Gone are the mimeo sheets and chalkboards. “The times they are a’changin’.”

Nonetheless, the spirit of Immaculate has not changed in over 40 years. We have experienced tremendous joys and devastating losses. However, the Immaculate family is always there to sup-port us. Many things have changed about Immaculate since I was a student, but it’s still great to be a Mustang.

Maureen (Brew) Arsenault graduated from IHS in 1969 and has been an edu-cator at Immaculate High School since 1982. She is currently the Chair of the English Department.

“I wouldn’t be where I am today if it weren’t for the commitment and constant sup-port given to me by the teachers of Immaculate High School. They went above and

beyond to help me get to where I am today. They saw my poten-tial and pushed me to be the best version of myself, the version only they could see at the time. As time passed my apprecia-tion for my teachers grew and I know now that if it weren’t for them, I would have never been able to achieve the goals I set for myself. I owe a huge part of my success to them and will be forever grateful for the love and guidance they so graciously shared with me.” CHELSIE RIZZO ’08

This year’s donor spotlight is about the Rizzo Family. Tony and Joan Rizzo are the heart of the Rizzo family. They have four children: Mike, Mary Jean, Anthony Jr. and Ross. The Rizzo family believes very strongly in “giving back” to their community and they are proud to sup-port Immaculate High School, the school that has assisted in the education of several of their children/grandchildren: Kristi, Anthony III, Chelsie, Ryan, Nicholas, Stephanie, Steven, Sara and “soon-to-be” MacKenzie. The family members are dedicated to whatever they commit to, giving 100% all of the time.

IHS President Kathleen Casey reflected, “As soon as I began learning about the Immaculate com-munity, I kept hearing the name ’Rizzo’. I was impressed with the many stories I heard about how the family supported the school. I was even more impressed when I began to meet the family members and work with them on different committees and events. The entire family, all three generations and all the cousins, are committed to the school. The family’s strong stewardship has truly raised the bar for fundraising and has been instrumental in enhancing the facility. I am excited about Tony Jr. be-ing named Chairman of the IHS Advisory Board, and look forward to working with him to advance the Mission of Immaculate.”

Starting back when Bob Gerwin was Principal of the School and Tony Sr. was attending an evening event with him, Tony Sr. brought it to his attention that the parking lot was dark and that he would address the issue. The very next day, he had lights installed in the parking lot.

When asked to raise money for the Science Department, he did so with the help of Wayne Shepperd. Tony Sr. always believed in his message: “It’s for the kids.” His next worthy cause was to revitalize the school’s golf tournament, which he did by chairing it in 2003 and having his sons, Anthony and Mike and son-in-law, Tony Rebeiro, serve on the Committee. For all of his contributions to Immaculate, in 2010, Tony Sr. was presented the Nancy K. Dolan Leadership Award. This award was established to pay tribute to those who unselfishly give of themselves to their community, charitable causes and the education of our youth.

Anthony Jr. went on to become Chairman of the Golf Committee from 2004 to 2007 and in 2008 was the recipient of the tournament’s 6th Annual Gold Tee Award. This recognition is for an in-dividual who has made a significant impact on Immaculate, especially in the area of athletics. He became a member of the Advisory Board in 2003 and in 2009 became Vice Chairman. In June 2012, he was appointed Chairman of the Board. Also in 2003, he was a member of the Develop-ment Committee and acted as the Committee Chairman from 2009 until the end of June, 2012. Mary Jean (Rizzo) Rebeiro has been a member of the Advisory Board and a member of the De-velopment Committee since 2009. Ross Rizzo will be joining the Development Committee this year. This year, he volunteered for the school’s Midnight Run and oversaw the renovations to the softball field. Debbie Rizzo was the Gala Chairperson for 2001 and 2002 and a member of the Gala Committee in 1999 & 2000. She was also the Cheerleading Coach from 2000 to 2002. Patty Rizzo co-chaired the Gala in 2004-2005, 2010-2012. Jeanette Rizzo has co-chaired it with her for the last two years and they will continue to do so in 2013.

Members of the third generation have also stepped up to the plate. All the children and grandchildren who attended Immaculate have devoted countless hours to such worthy school causes as the Gala, Golf Tournament, Midnight Run, various other special events and Chelsie ’08 was just named the Assistant Varsity Field Hockey coach for the Mustangs.

The family has made commitments to the Mustang Valley Field, the softball fields and the gym bleachers project. Also, they have supported the Annual Fund and the Gala. One of the many other special school events they contributed to because they believe in encourag-ing school spirit, was the Boys Basketball State Championship Game where the Rizzo Family provided the buses to transport the students to the event that was held at Mohegan Sun.

Immaculate High School appreciates the endless support of three generations of the Rizzo family for their numerous contributions and their belief in the school and our mission. Currently, the third generation of the Rizzo family, which is the first generation of the Immaculate alumni, is carrying on the tradition. The family has commented that they consider themselves blessed to be able to give back to Immaculate on the many levels that they do. They encourage the community to support Immaculate in any and every way possible, keeping in mind that the gift of education is one that lasts a lifetime…And always remember: “It’s for the kids.”
