THERE is a popular story going around at the moment, set for children aged three to seven called Mr Gumpy’s Outing.

The story goes like this: Mr Gumpy decided to go on a trip down the river.

The children say, “can we come too?”

Mr Gumpy says “Yes, but don’t squabble.”

The same procedure follows with the pig who ‘must not muck about’, the rabbit who ‘must not hop about’ the dog ‘who must not chase the cat’ and the cat ‘who must not chase the rabbit and the calf ’.

You get the picture.Well the children

squabble, the dog chases the cat, the calf and pig trample about, the rabbit hops about and the whole boat is tipped up, and everyone ends up in the water.

They walk home across the fi elds and had tea.

“Come again for a ride another day,” says Mr Gumpy.

It may not be obvious right at the beginning, but this story is a repetition in another form. These stories are: Adam and Eve, Cain and Abel, Noah, and The Tower of Babel.

The structure of these stories, and that of Mr Gumpy’s Outing are exactly the same.

(1) There is described an idyllic situation where everyone is happy, and (2) there are limits placed on the participants’ behaviour, (3) the limits are of course broken and (4) there are consequences, but the ‘good will’ of Mr Gumpy has not diminished.

This situation raises questions for me in the context of the second lockdown that parts of Melbourne are experiencing right now.

We have had the advent of the virus, and the call for us all to ‘be in the same boat’ (Yes, Mr Gumpy, Noah, the Church etc) or ‘all in this together’.

We were doing really well, then for one reason or another, the limits were not respected. Now we have to live with the consequences.

The next question is ‘How will God’s continued blessing be upon us as we live in this situation in a world that cannot be a ‘paradise’ any longer, but one in which we have to learn to live ‘with’ COVID-19?’

The interesting thing is that the advent of COVID-19 has revealed our

nature to us in a pretty sharp way.

It has revealed that there are limits which, if not respected, put us into a dangerous place.

There are also consequences.

The story of Mr Gumpy’s outing makes them quite light: everyone gets wet.

In the Bible, the consequences are dire.

Adam and Eve are expelled from ‘paradise’, and have to work for a living, Cain is forced to be a fugitive - only eight people survive the fl ood, and the confusion that results in ‘not being able to speak another’s language’ comes from the Tower of Babel.

The good news is that having lost the innocence of knowing ourselves not to be perfect citizens, we have not finally lost God’s love and goodwill toward us.

We will be able to go on.We will be able to fi nd

ways of living.We will be able to repent

and re-set our relationship to God and with each other.

The point is that these issues that we face are at bottom about us and God, and about how we live with our God.

They are about how we accept the place of being God’s creatures.

ALPINE Lions youth girls coordinator, author and music enthusiast Craig Dent has received a $4500 grant to continue spreading the joy of creating within local schools.

The Whorouly man has just released his third chil-dren’s book and will use the Sustaining Creative Work-ers grant to support music and writing workshops for primary and secondary stu-dents, including an exhibi-tion component.

“The grant will be to de-velop online platforms for the workshops instead of myself and Lauren Habarow physically travelling to re-mote locations; so we can also do zoom sessions,” he said.

“Thanks to the virtual programs we can work right through the North East, in-cluding Mansfi eld, so it’s great to have that platform as well as physically going to some schools.

“The fact that Victorian kids in remote communi-ties can share their work is

great; the thing that I found is there are so many remote schools who would love do-ing these programs but they have to manage a budget and then the physical distance of us getting there.”

Sustaining Creative Work-ers initiative is part of the Victorian Government’s sur-vival package for the crea-tive sector.

The program was deliv-ered in partnership with Re-gional Arts Victoria and Arts Access Victoria.
