SOCIETY NOTICE BOARD

Editor’s Comments: Firstly some good railway news with the breach of the line at Dawlish being repaired ahead of time and should be open by the time you read this, re-connecting the far southwest by rail. Then there is the news that train building in the UK is on the up with Bombardier being awarded the contract to build Crossrail stock and Hitachi opening up a state of the art manufacturing facility in Newton Aycliffe.

With the growing number of events we are planning or will be attending, I have instigated another slight change to the layout in TRACKS so that they are all gathered together under a new header of EVENTS. The AGM details are also included as is the Eastleigh Visit for which you can now book.

Having transformed the books and TRACKS which all members benefit from, the news is that we are to launch a new improved website in May, though we acknowledge it only affects those with internet access. One of the improvements will be to remove the need to sign in to the Members Area which has been a bugbear more so since the change of website address, necessitating switching to the old website. Previous issues of TRACKS (from Dec 2006 to date) will be available to download as pdfs by anyone visiting the site and hopefully this will encourage more to join. However, on a rolling basis, the last 12 months issues will still only be available to members, but instead of the tedious need to sign in to download, these will be emailed on request from the editor. In particular if you so request, the very latest issue will be emailed when it goes off to the printers so you will get it ‘hot off the press’ 10 days before you receive the printed version. That means you have the latest news, some within days of the event occurring. We know many of you do this at present by downloading, but perhaps this has not been widely realised. Not only do we see this as an improved benefit to members, but will also save valuable time in admin allocating and maintaining web access instructions. So prior to the launch can all those members who wish to receive TRACKS in future by email before and in addition to the printed version please email me, Trevor at [email protected]. Though they will still work until the launch, no more new login details will be allocated in April.

In conjunction with the above if there are any members who actually do not want to receive a printed copy and are just happy with an electronic version then please let me know. There is no reduction in the sub and this is the arrangement with our overseas members.

Another change is the way photos are submitted for our Flickr photo gallery. It is important that all photos be available for inclusion in TRACKS as this is the primary vehicle for reaching members. Please therefore send all your photos of current topical interest, unusual movements, new liveries or just plain old everyday scenes (you never know when they will just vanish) to me as editor. That way no interesting photos will slip through for use on Flickr without getting aired in TRACKS first. So that photos are suitable for TRACKS please send them uncompressed as originally taken. For use then on Flickr they will be re-sized smaller at our end.

One of the new features on the upcoming website is an index of articles (from Dec 2006 to date) which are then linked to the relevant issue of TRACKS. Eventually there will also be a comprehensive index of photos used for the same issues, currently standing at just over 4000, which is growing rapidly. Hopefully this will be a useful reference resource for members.

Publication News: The next new edition to be released towards the end of April will be Irish Railways 2014. See rear cover for prices.

The recent new 2014 editions UK Pocket Book, UK Combine and UK Wagons are all selling extremely well and it should be borne in mind that these strong sales subsidise the production of TRACKS as a 48 page full colour magazine. So please continue to purchase the books and recommend them to friends, even wave them around whilst you are with other enthusiasts, who in their wisdom are not members!! Without the sale of books membership would have to be at least £2 higher.

New Sundry items for Sale: Pocket Book Protective Covers: We can offer protective covers for the Pocket Book. These are transparent plastic and fit very easily. They are priced at £1.50 for members and £2.50 for non-members. TRACKS Binders: We can now offer A5 cordex binders, which neatly and safely store your copies of TRACKS. They do look smart and are very practical in use. These are blue in two width sizes, both holding 12 issues. The larger takes the current new 48 pages for 2014 onwards, whilst the slightly narrower size (medium) takes the previous 40 page issues of 2012 and 2013 and will also hold the mixed 32 pages and 40 pages of 2011. The photo right shows copies of TRACKS in the large binder laying flat, with an empty one standing alongside 3 medium binders containing years 2011-13. For those who haven’t encountered this type of binder, each magazine slips under a plastic ’string’ which is permanently attached. I have found that if you use a piece of thin stiff plastic you can slip the magazines in easier particularly when you are putting the last few in. The binders have the ICRS logo embossed on the spine and each binder comes with labels covering the years 2011-17 which you can affix accordingly. Both sizes of binder cost £7.50 for members and £9.99 for non-members. Membership Matters: Subscriptions: Annual - £16.00, Five year - £75.00 (saving £5.00 & hedging against future rises) ICRS Membership gives you: • a high quality full colour 48 page monthly magazine TRACKS - covering all aspects of railways. • up to 30% discount on all ICRS books (7 currently available). • the latest issue of TRACKS emailed 10 days in advance of the printed version. • an informative website, with indexes to previous issues of the magazine (Dec 2006 to date). • 10% discount on lan Allan books (direct sales from IA only).

New Members: (* re-joined) Joshua Brown (Ashford), Neil Carter (Bradford on Avon), Roger Childs* (Wotton-under-Edge), John Dorrington (Maidstone), Christine Field (Huntly), Ian Golding (Northampton), Stephen Haynes* (Chard), James Houston (Nottingham), Graham Jones (Grantham), Keith Lee (Rushden), Stuart Marshall (London), Brian Mason (Reading), John Milton (Exeter), Martin Oliver* (Waltham Cross), Michael Potts (Pinner), Leslie Sullivan (London), Peter Turner (Saxilby), Peter Yates (Cullompton) - a warm welcome to you all.

Membership Renewal: When your membership is due for renewal / overdue this will be indicated on the TRACKS address carrier sheet with your expiry date. Therefore please check your address carrier sheet with your copy of TRACKS...before you dispose of it. The reverse of the carrier sheet will be printed with a Renewal form, which can be returned or not depending on the method of payment (see below). If no renewal is forthcoming after a second Final Reminder, your membership will be deemed to have lapsed. Please make sure you complete the Date of Birth section and provide a telephone contact number. If you are ex-directory, don’t worry as it will not be revealed to any third parties but it is important that we have a contact number other than by post, which is a costly way to communicate and not covered by the low membership fee. As a helpful ‘reminder’, members who have set up a bank standing order will have a note to that effect above your name on the front of the carrier sheet but no renewal form on the reverse. Hopefully then no one will renew twice, as has happened !!

4

Methods of Payment:

Please note we cannot accept credit card payments over the telephone.

Internet Banking (BACS) / Standing Order: This is the preferred most cost effective, secure and quickest way of paying, for you and the Society and ensures we get the full amount. Bank details will be included on your renewal form.

Cheque or Postal Order: Please make payable to ICRS and return your remittance with the form to: Trevor Roots (Membership Secretary) ICRS Membership Renewal, Mill of Botary, Cairnie, Huntly, Aberdeenshire AB54 4UD

PayPal: Pay by credit card or debit card via PayPal on the website, however this incurs a cost to the Society (currently £0.74 for £16 & £2.75 for £75)

Please provide your first name and a landline telephone number, whether joining or renewing and your email. If you renew in the first week of the month, whilst TRACKS is at the printers, you may receive a Renewal / Reminder form but do not worry as the admin process will naturally see things cross in the post. Please also note that cheques are not presented to the bank until the first week of the following month. As well as receiving a new card, renewals will be acknowledged where possible by email.

NB. When using PayPal, please remember to provide your home address and email via the comments box, but ONLY if different from the one used ie you may use your partners account or do it from work. Also use the comments box if buying or renewing a subscription for someone else.

Membership Cards: Your membership is valid until the end of month as shown by the first two numbers. For those who joined from mid 2009, the second two numbers are the year. Cards will be sent as soon as practicable following your renewal, separate from TRACKS distribution. No card is sent to overseas members.

Magazine: Submissions: Articles: Any information / article on any railway related item will be most welcome for inclusion in the magazine. Your visits, travel stories or anecdotes about any part of the railway network, past or present, home or abroad can give pleasure to others or inform of places to visit. This railway hobby of ours is made all that more enjoyable by the sharing of information, knowledge and experiences. Neatly hand written submissions are perfectly acceptable, but ideally a typed document is preferable. Better still, if you have a PC and internet connection then send an email.

Photos: Good quality photographs are always welcome, preferably high res digital photographs via email (not compressed please), but prints are acceptable. Please send an SAE if you wish them returned. Please include full contact details with any submissions, including your first name.

The latest date for articles / info for the May 2014 issue is Friday 25th April 2013 with delivery to members after Friday 9th May 2014

Magazine Distribution: TRACKS is distributed direct from the printers to members in a clear plastic wrapping with an address carrier sheet (reverse printed with a Renewal / Reminder form if appropriate). If any member fails to receive their copy after one week from the above estimated delivery date then please contact the editor.

Magazine Contributors: Thanks to John Barton, Ken Bull, Joshua Brown, Neil Dix, Martin Evans, Ian Feather, Tony Flatt, Michael Hayman, James Holloway, Geoff Hope, Nigel Hoskins, Gordon Kirkby, Ian McAlpine, Stuart Moore, Gary Mutten, Colin Pottle, Trevor Prince, Mark Richards, Mike Rumens, Stuart Runciman, Ray Smith, Derek Sneddon, David Spencer, Graham Stockton, Roger Thomas, Carl Watson, Doug Welch & Trevor Roots. EVENTS

MEMBER ONLY VISITS

AGM & Crewe Basford Hall Yard Visit: The date is Saturday 26th April 2014 and we are going back to one of our traditional venues at the Crewe Arms Hotel for the AGM which is adjacent to the railway, across the road from the station entrance. Prior to the AGM we have arranged a tour of Basford Hall Yard through Freightliner for which half the £10 fee (donated to Charity) is being subsidised by ICRS, details below. Following the visit sandwiches and coffee will served in the Hotel at 15.00 with the AGM starting at 15.30. It is expected to end by 17.00.

If you wish to go on the visit please send your remittance (cheques made payable to ICRS) to Louise Watson (Events Co-ordinator) and provide either an email or telephone contact to receive confirmation of your application. If you are attending the AGM the please contact Stuart Moore (Secretary). Contact details for Louise and Stuart are on page 2. Please do so asap. At the time of writing it is expected that there will be around 50 members participating, which is excellent.

Eastleigh Works: Following our successful visit in 2013 we have organised a Members Only visit to Eastleigh Works on the 7th June which is expected to start at 13.00 and be 2 hours longer, there being more daylight then. Details have yet to be finalised but where there will be a 100 tickets, access to all areas, cab rides and there will be a hog roast again. The 2013 event cost the society £2500.00 as a one off in our 40th Anniversary year so though we will still be heavily subsidising the event, it will be necessary to make a small charge of £10. Please reserve your place by sending an A5 SAE (normal second class stamp will suffice) with your remittance (cheques made payable to ICRS) to Louise Watson (Events Co-ordinator). Please provide either an email or telephone contact to receive confirmation of your application. Tickets will be posted out at the end of May.

EASTLEIGH WORKS REPORT by Carl Watson

for the period up to 31st March 2014 General: Work on converting the Bosh/Cleaning House into a diesel running shed is well underway with track taken up and work started on relaying the roads into the building (see photo below taken on the 23rd March). Hopefully next month there will be news on who will be moving into the shed, watch this space!

Locos: 66572 was on the Maritime trip on the 3rd which also contained 66540 for repairs. GBRf have started a new train of cars to/from Southampton Docks and the locos come into the Works for refuelling. So far we’ve had 66705 and for most of the time 66710 (see photos below).

47805 and 37423 arrived on 3rd. They departed to the depot next door on the 4th with the two Escort Coaches, 9419 and 9428. 37423 then returned to the Works for repainting (see photo overleaf top taken on the 13th) and 47805 departed back to Crewe with coaches from the depot. 37423 is due to be completed early in April. 68002 arrived in the early hours of 15th with the Escort Coaches 9419 and 9428 behind 47805. Repairs are completed on 57010 and it’s due to depart on 31st, with 57003 due to arrive for an F Exam.

7

Wagons: Freightliner trips from/to Maritime are now running sometimes twice a week. The number of wagons is continuing to increase. It’s proving impossible for me to keep tabs on all the comings and goings. 66116 arrived with IGA 4647 007-0 for repairs on the 4th. 66534 was on the Maritime trip on the 12th and the 24th with 70020 on the 17th. IGA 33.80.4647.049-2 was missed coming in for repair but is due to leave by the 31st.

A number of FEAs have arrived for short term storage pending replacement wheelsets and have been stacked in the yard (see photo above). The full list is (top down): 640419/178/177, 640128/127/051, 640203/0204/1061, 640425/0426/1032, 640277/0278/1012, 640420/408/407

66079 arrived with JNA 9801 and IVA 23.80.2398.632-2 for repairs on the 19th (see photo below). This is the first of a series of JNAs and more had arrived by the end of the month, 9801/02/11/14/28/34 (see photo right of JNA 9828 taken on the 28th). Wagons arriving are processed very quickly and can be moved almost anywhere on site within hours of arrival and its difficult keeping tabs on them and working out exactly how many and which ones!

Coaches: VSOE Baggage Car 99545 (80207) is almost complete in the Paintshop. LU Inspection Saloon 45029 is back on bogies. Units: Swanage Railway Class 108 DMU 51933 (see photo below left) and 54504 (see photo below right) arrived behind 33207 on the 6th for repairs.

Siemens have completed overhauls on 450010, 006, 020 and 003 with 011 and 074 onsite on the 28th. 450011 was due to depart on the 31st. Wabtec have overhauled 455803 and 804 with 805 arriving on the 28th.

66079 + JNA 9801 + IVA 23.80.2398.632-2 19th March 2014

London Underground: The LU Asset Inspection Train departed by road over three days; 3213 and 4213 on the 4th, 3079 and 3179 on the 5th (see photos below)and 3313 and 4313 on the 6th. Our last ‘C’ Stock arrived on the 4th, 5705 and 6705. Scrapping of ‘C’ Stock by Raxstar has now finished with the following completed in the month; 5508, 5716, 5604, 6703, 5585, 5540, 6705, 5724, 5506, 5601, 5731, 5518, 5571, 5718, 5705, 5512 and finally 5547 on the 24th.

RAMBLINGS OF A RAIL ENTHUSIAST by David Spencer – 1967 Part 2 (final)

I try to provide extra detail on the items of traction shown in photos, other than number, date and location as provided by Dave…so it’s my fault if errors creep in, ed. We jump now to the 12th May when I went down to King’s Cross from Huntingdon behind a type 4 Sulzer (I assume that was a Peak, later class 46?) and spent the rest of the day photographing at Wimbledon, Clapham Junction or Queenstown Road, Battersea.

Because of my service career I never got to the North West in 1968 like so many did chasing steam and had to make do with the Southern. Next day I took more photographs at Waterloo before I caught a Portsmouth Harbour train and met my lady friend from Gosport. In defence of myself I have to say I was not being disloyal to my future wife Dot really was just a friend....oh yeah, ed !!

We went across to the Isle of White and part walked, part bussed to Newport where the steam graveyard was for all the 02 class locos. I counted nine waiting for the reaper with one already half cut up, which along with the ancient stock made a sorry sight. We returned to Ryde where larking about on the beach I fell into the sea, what a berk! Saying farewell to Dot I got an overnight train back to Waterloo and on Sunday went to the Biggin Hill Air Show where it poured down with rain, so there was hardly any flying, but that’s show biz as they say.

A brief railway interlude on the 8th July had me photographing Rowington Junction signal box (demolished soon after), Claverdon old station (also long since demolished) and a long look around Stratford upon Avon Old Town, again I expect long gone. Having many friends in Stratford at the time we knew where to go to avoid the tourists and around the old town was such a quiet spot. Birmingham New Street reconstruction was still ongoing and following the mainline activity on the GWR mainline alterations were occurring there too. I was always alert to keeping an up to date record of track alterations and part or total station demolition. On Friday 1st September I managed a very long railway walk for the first time in ages but getting off the train at Cradley Heath and Cradley I got lost and ended up at Lye, the next station. So taking advantage of a bad job I had a look at Stourbridge Junction shed before proceeding to Brettell Lane and from there to Kingswinford Junction, then all the way to Oxley Middle Junction. That last bit alone is over twelve miles so the daily total must have been over fifteen. The line was partly open and I saw what later metamorphosed into class 25s D5293 and D7565 at Kingswinford and D7647 at Pensnett. I think technically the line is still open but mothballed to Pensnett. However it was grossly overgrown and totally impenetrable the last time I visited The line had a very brief passenger life of only about five years, but all the stations and halts were there and some in quite good condition. I returned home from Wolverhampton. Jumping again to the 14th October I got a train down to Newport taking several photos of the demolition of the Severn Bridge following the vandalism by a barge driver. The reason was another South Wales rail tour the first by the Warwickshire Railway Society and imaginatively titled 'South Wales Valley Tour No 1'. It went from Newport High Street to Cardiff General, the pretty route! Out of Newport it made for the B&M line from Bassaleg Junction to Machen, then the former ADR line to Caerphilly as far as Aber Junction where we reversed down the ramp to the Taff Vale main line at Taffs Well. After another reversal up to Stormstown Junction and yet another up what was left of the Ynysybwl branch, which was Lady Windsor Colliery; we reached Treherbert. We continued through Rhondda Tunnel, which the tour notes tell me is 1 mile 1683 yards, then down to Cymmer Afon and left again through the Llynvi Tunnel and down through Maesteg to Tondu. There, after another reversal, we covered both the Ogmore and Garw valleys, both of which I have walked. The one bit that was new to me was the former link to the GWR mainline at Llanharan, now only open as far as Wern Tarw Colliery. It was time for home and after one last reversal we returned to Tondu, down to Bridgend and back to Cardiff via the Vale of Glamorgan line.

13

Four weeks later Roger and I took ourselves off on a comprehensive tour around Birmingham Snow Hill into the labyrinth of underground passageways getting a full photographic record before demolition. We then crossed to the Midland and did the same at Birmingham Central Goods depot and walked the line to Church Road Junction. On the 3rd December my note reads started wedding arrangements and the beginning of the end for regular railway outings for a long time to come! Not that I'm complaining we were a true love match and had over twenty one years before she sadly died. Railways always came second and I tried never to disrupt family life with anything I did in all that time. Betty knew this and was always content sometimes to read a book whilst I got my fix looking at trains!

PRESERVATION GALAS

East Coast Giants of Steam, Barrow Hill, 8-9th Feb 2014 by Stuart Moore: I hadn't been to any of the NRM York Mallard 75 events but did want to see the two A4's from 'across the water'. I couldn't see me getting across to Canada or America just to see an A4. So when I heard that the 2 of them were going to be at Barrow Hill for an event I felt it was too good an opportunity to miss. The two A4's, 4489 ‘Dominion of Canada’ and 60008 ‘Dwight D.Eisenhower’ were lined up next to 60532 ‘Blue Peter’ in the yard and 4464 ‘Bittern’ (see photo opposite top) which was being used to run shuttles in the yard. I went on the Saturday and found the event to be very well supported (I've heard 6000 attended over the weekend). The combination of good weather and seeing the loco's a real railway environment rather than at a museum made the East Coast Giants event quite special. All three A4's looked fantastic, it was just a shame that they couldn't have had ‘Tornado’ complete and on show alongside the others rather than cabless on the turntable, but you can't have everything. A nice touch was having Deltic D9009 on view as you arrived at the shed and 89001 also on show in the yard. If they could have got a class 43 HST (there had been a 125 powered tour to the yard the day before) and a class 91 it would have been a real coup. The other advantage of Barrow Hill is being able to see the other loco's in the yard. The trip also gave me a chance to see the ETL and Colas liveried 86/7's and DRS 37422 not long arrived from Glasgow works (see photo opposite).

I am glad to be able to say that I've seen the 2 A4's that were shipped to America and Canada and also in such a class setting.

photos by Stuart Moore KWVR Steam Spectacular, 7-9th Mar 2014 by Andy Woodcock: I went along on the first day, Friday, on what started out as a poor day but soon developed into a sunny cold day with a bit of a breeze. The first day was exceptionally well attended. The stars were visiting 2-6-0 61994 ’The Great Marquess’ and the launch of Big Jim S16 95820 back into service. Black 5 4-6-0 45305 did not appear due to overrunning repairs. West Country 34092 was due to make an appearance in Haworth Yard on the Saturday. A colleague went to photograph 4F 0-6-0 43924 during the gala coming up the branch but found it tender first having been turned on the turntable at Keighley. The two main attractions performed well and looked great. On the Friday 0-6-0 1704 ‘Nunlow’ did a solo trip on the first passenger turn from Keighley to Oxenhope and 61994 featured top and tailing an Ingrow shuttle. Very little to report on the railway itself with 0-4-0T Pug 51218 now partly sheeted outside the door of the exhibition shed at Oxenhope. Railbus 79962 has been sold to the VCT at Ingrow and it has been moved still sheeted over, from the back of the DMU siding to the front. After having been out of action for 25 years, restoration including removal of asbestos will now start.

INFRASTRUCTURE NEWS Signalling Update - March 2014 by Mark Richards:

The weekend of 15th/16th March saw the completion of the Arun Valley Re-signalling Scheme, which had initially been planned to take place last autumn. The existing signal boxes at Amberley, Pulborough and Billingshurst (the oldest Saxby & Farmer 1b box in use) were abolished with control moving to Three Bridges Area Signalling Centre (ASC), with an extension to the present Horsham panel. left Amberley signal box 22nd November 2013 (Mark Richards)

Billingshurst signal box is Grade II listed and was moved on the 25th March 2014 to the Amberley Chalk Pits Museum

The next scheme to be completed on the South Coast will be the East Coastway, which will see the abolition of boxes at Bexhill, Pevensey & Westham, Hampden Park, Polegate and Berwick as well as the crossing cabin at Havensmouth (Normans Bay). However the largest box at Eastbourne is to be retained as it has gained Grade II listed status. This scheme is due to be commissioned at Easter 2014. The signalling here will be re-controlled from the new Three Bridges Rail Operating Centre (ROC), which will eventually control all routes throughout Sussex. The East Coastway will be the first area to be signalled from this location (detailed report to follow).

Whilst not affecting any signal boxes, the line between Brighton and Lewes has benefitted from additional signals being installed over the weekend of 22nd/23rd March. These new three aspect colour light signals break up the long block sections and are controlled from the existing Three Bridges ASC. These additional signals should see a significant improvement in headways which will be of particular benefit when Southern run shuttle services to Falmer in connection with Brighton & Hove Albion FC football matches. Falmer is also home to the University of Sussex and this too generates considerable traffic for the line. Elsewhere on the Sussex Route, both Plumpton and Littlehaven Crossing Boxes are due for closure this year. Control will be from Three Bridges ASC. Throughout 2014 and early 2015, the West Coast Main Line will see significant disruption over Bank Holiday and August weekends and the Christmas / New Year holidays as the Watford area is remodelled and re-signalled with the existing PSB abolished. Signalling will be re-controlled from Wembley Signalling Control Centre (SCC). Work on the new Rugby ROC, which is situated to the north of the existing nondescript SCC is well advanced. The PSB was demolished last year with no trace of this now remaining. Further south, the former Bletchley PSB seems to be assured of a secure future as the operating floor has now been converted into office space for the Local Operations Manager and their team of Mobile Operations Managers. Other re-signalling schemes will be underway throughout 2014 with many smaller boxes being abolished and more areas coming under the control of ROCs as these come online. The only locations with no current closure dates announced are Somerleyton and Reedham Swing Bridge boxes. However, it is unlikely that the final signal boxes on the network will close before the 2040s so there is still time to get out and see these fine and interesting buildings before they become history.

RAIL TOUR NEWS Buffer Puffer 11.0, Saturday 25th Jan 2014 by Mark Richards Pathfinder Tours have been running their popular Buffer Puffer Tours since 2000 and the trusted format of a track bash around London with heritage traction brings enthusiasts back year after year. For me though Buffer Puffer 11.0 was a first; in previous years I have photographed these excursions around London, this was my first time travelling on one.

An added attraction for this tour was the Milton Keynes Central pick up and set down and top and tail Class 37s throughout. The locos for the day were 37405 and 37610 ‘T.S.(Ted) Cassady 14.5.61-6.4.08’. Starting from Crewe at 05.33, 1Z60 Crewe to London Blackfriars arrived at Milton Keynes Central a few minutes up on the booked 08.05 - 08.07 pick up with 37610 leading. The morning was dreary with a persistent drizzle although this didn’t dampen the spirits or the experience of what proved to be an interesting itinerary.

The first calling point on our meander around London was Wembley Central before taking the Up City Line at Harlesden Junction to Kensal Green Reversing Siding. From here, the route was via Willesden Junction (High Level), Acton Wells Junction, South Acton Junction, Kew East Junction and New Kew Junction to join the Hounslow Loop via Barnes. The final pick up of the morning was duly made at Clapham Junction before proceeding via the spaghetti of lines leading from here to Longhedge Junction, Factory Junctions, Brixton thence via the rare Down Brixton Spur to Loughborough Junction and London Blackfriars, arriving in Platform 3. There was about a 15 minute leg-stretch and photo stop here (see photo of 37405 above) and those in the know (not me!) immediately went to the country end to photograph 37610 which would lead the tour on the next leg. What was not known to me at the time was that 37610 should not have arrived at Blackfriars at all as 37/6s are banned from the station! If I had known, a notable photo could have been had…

From Blackfriars (as 1Z61), a conventional routing was followed via Lewisham to Hayes, although the sight of a pair of locos at the South London terminus is anything but usual. A further photo stop was

36

made here at 11.45 (see photo of 37610 opposite bottom). 37405 was again in charge for the return via the Ladywell Loop and a rare crossover was ticked at Edward Street Junction, New Cross, from the Up Fast to the No.3 Up. Passing through London Bridge, the route to Cannon Street was taken with arrival shortly after 12.00 into Platform 2. A break of nearly 40 minutes was provided here for lunch and more photos!

37610 led on departure from Cannon Street with the reporting number of the train now 1Z62. Retracing our route back towards Hayes, the Beckenham Spur was taken at New Beckenham Junction arriving in the Down Bay at Beckenham Junction. A very smart turnaround precluded alighting from the train here with our route now taking the train across the whole layout at Beckenham Junction to the Crystal Palace Single and ‘via the Hills’ to Brixton. Our destination from here was to have been Battersea Loop. However, running behind schedule, it soon transpired that the Loop wouldn’t be covered as unfortunately the Network Rail staff who should have been on site to clip the points to allow our train to enter the Loop was over an hour away! To avoid a long wait and potentially missing out other parts of the itinerary, the decision was taken to reverse at Stewarts Lane returning as 1Z63 via Factory Junctions and the South London Line to London Bridge Platform 13.

The work to rebuild London Bridge was much in evidence with Platforms 14 and 15 due to be handed back at the end of March when Platforms 12 and 13 will be taken out of use. Enough time was available to grab a few quick photos (see photo of 37610 above) before 37610 led our train to Epsom Downs via Peckham Rye, Streatham, Selhurst, West Croydon and Sutton.

Epsom Downs was one of the most unusual places visited all day. The line is now almost entirely single and the station is a modern single-platform rebuild situated in the middle of a housing estate. It is hard to imagine that it was once a nine platform substantial terminus, serving the nearby Epsom racecourse (see photo of 37405 right and note the different colour to the headboard to that carried on 37610).

Returning as 1Z64, our train returned to Herne Hill where storm clouds were gathering. I was able to take a few quick photos before an almighty thunderstorm deluged the station. Our final destination of the day (running from Herne Hill as 1Z65) was Tattenham Corner, the only terminus south of the Thames to face almost due north. Although booked to use the rare Platform 3 at the terminus, the Buffer Puffer was put into Platform 2 instead due to berthed Southern stock.

37

From Tattenham Corner as 1Z66 with 37610 in charge for the rest of the journey back to Milton Keynes, there were still some final rare pieces of track to cover. Firstly at Purley where we crossed from the Up Tattenham to Platform 4 then at East Croydon the north end crossover from the Up Slow to the Reversible Fast was taken. Travelling via Clapham Junction, the train looped back via Pouparts Junction, Longhedge Junction, Factory Junctions and Brixton to run via Herne Hill and Tulse Hill. The reason for this unusually circuitous routing was to cover the Up Leigham Spur, which has no booked passenger working. Returning to Clapham Junction for the second time, a brief stop was made in Platform 16 for passengers to alight. 1Z66 then proceeded via the West London Line covering the rare Down Main at Kensington (Olympia) – again no booked passenger use. Joining the Down Slow at Wembley via the Willesden Relief lines, a fast run was made down the West Coast Main Line. With possessions starting earlier on Saturdays than weekdays, 1Z66 crossed Up Slow to Up Fast at Watford Junction as the engineers were waiting to take possession of the Slow Lines. A spirited run down the Fast saw arrival in Milton Keynes Central Platform 6. A final quick couple of photos before 37610 growled into the night with 37405 assisting on the back.

RAILWAY GLOBETROTTERS by Ray Smith

The Smiths on Tour, 18-30th April 2012 – Part 4 (final): April 27th 2012: A good morning session on the station before heading to the Bahnpark, a museum at the old locomotive shed. Driving alongside, locomotives from many European countries were seen. A gate was open so we drove in and parked. No sooner had I switched off the engine when a nasty man in a yellow vest threw us out. Go away, we are closed! So much for promoting public relations! Their loss, as we would have been happy to put some money into their fund.

I have many favourite German locations and Ulm is another of them. Quite a busy station with a good selection of units stabled around. A unit shed only a few minutes’ walk from the station and the main locomotive shed another 20 minutes walk where plenty were seen.

Our hotel tonight was Wurtzburg, two minutes from the station. This station by day is reasonably busy, yet in the evening when local passenger trains tail off, the freights take over. I have seen 3 freights heading north on parallel lines at the same time. It’s one of these places where you cannot call it a day as something else is coming. However, our hotel has a Chinese buffet that also stocked beer, so it was tempting to leave.

April 28th 2012: Another visit to the station before heading to Mannheim, a great shed, home to the 185s. Leaving Wurtzburg we looked in at the stabling point at Zell, 7 locos there. Our journey took us near 2 great German museums that specialised in all form of transport so we had to look in. Both are expensive and if you looked at all sections a day could easily pass by. The first was the Shinsheim Museum. The cost of entry was about £15.00.

Next was Max Speyer Museum, owned by the same group as Shinsheim. Same admission charge but 19 assorted locomotives. Mainly German with 1 Chinese, 1 Austrian and 1 Italian. Now Mannhein, permission granted, 50 locomotives on shed. Ludwigshafen, a unit depot on the other side of the river has always been hospitable, not today. A definite NO! At this shed you cannot see much from the outside so off to Bishofsheim, Mainz. 31 on shed including a class 140 in blue and cream livery which I copped (where has this been hiding)? This shed now has an allocation of new class 261s but only 1 was on shed.

The main building was closed and 17 were seen in the yard(s). A look onto the station and being a Saturday night I did not expect much, how wrong could I be? 13 freights passed through in less than 2 hours as well as diesel and electric hauled passenger trains.

April 29th 2012: Sunday morning and off to Köln. On route, passing Brohl we saw a warship, so a quick u-turn and it turned out to be class 220015 which was sold to Swiss Railways and numbered 18463. Withdrawn and now preserved back home! Calling in at the high security depot for HGK (Häfen und Güterverkehr Köln AG) where last year we were surprised when we asked on the intercom at the gate and were allowed in. This time it was a NO! but 8 were seen from the perimeter. Eifeltor yard had 24 on, 6 were Swiss. Gremberg is an excellent shed serving the nearby yard. Permission granted. This location, although appearing deserted has a complex CCTV system. On a previous visit after walking upstairs to the office the boss was sitting nodding his head as I entered. He knew we were there. As usual the shed was well stocked, 73 on with 3 Belgian and 1 Swiss.

John was flying home this evening so I had to get him back to Düsseldorf airport. We had some time to spare and decided to re-visit 2 of the first day’s depots at Oberhausen. On west we saw 22 and on the main shed there were 53 including my last class 151. I dropped John off at the airport, returned the hire car and went back to my hotel. The price of my flight was so much cheaper the next day that even taking in my hotel costs I was still better off staying the extra night.

Düsseldorf station, 30th April 2012 April 30th 2012: Last day! I took a return to Dortmund and on the day copped 11, then onto the airport for my flight home. It was hard to believe that in the last 13 days I drove just short of 4500 kilometres, did sheds in almost all areas of Germany and copped so much. Looking forward to next year’s jaunt.
