Stage 5 Curriculum Information for 2020 This booklet has been developed to support students and parents preparing for entry into Stage 5. The information contained in this booklet relates to subjects and units that may be available in the 2020 Stage 5 Curriculum. Availability of subjects will be at the discretion of the Principal and Curriculum Team in accordance with NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA), the NSW Department of Education (DoE) and school requirements. The Stage 5 elective lines generated after the students have made their choices will reflect this student choice. 2018

INTRODUCTION

ThesubjectselectionprocessisaveryimportantdecisiontimeforstudentsandparentswhenpreparingforYears9and10.Students shouldselect subjects that theyhavean interest inandbelieve theywilldowell in for theirRecordofSchoolAchievement(RoSA).Itisimportantforstudentstogivetheirinitialthoughtsalotofcare.StudentsshouldselectthesubjectstheyenjoythemostasthiswillprovidethemwithapositiveattitudetowardslearninganddeveloptheessentialstudyskillsandmotivationrequiredforsuccessintheimportantYearsof11and12.Studentsshouldfocusonselectingsubjectsthatinterestthem,notwhattheirfriendsaredoingandnotontheteacherwhomaytaketheclass.ParentsandstudentsmustnotethatstudentsdonotneedtolimittheirelectivechoicesinStage5toareastheythinktheymaywishtopursueinsenioryears.AlmostallsubjectsinYears11and12donotneedtohavebeentakeninjuniorschool.ThisbooklethasbeenpreparedtohelpstudentsandparentsnavigatetheirwaythroughthecomplexcurriculumstructureonofferinStage5atThePondsHighSchool.Itshouldbecloselyreadandusedasareferenceforstudentsandparentsaboutthepatternsofstudyavailabletostudentsaswellasessentialinformationabouteachsubjectandcourseandthemannerinwhichtheyareassessedandgraded.TheStage5Curriculumculminatesintheawardofgrades,whichareforwardedtoNSWEducationStandardsAuthority(NESA)fortheRoSA.WhileitisexpectedthatthevastbulkofstudentsatThePondsHighSchoolwillcontinuetheirstudiesinYears11&12fortheawardoftheHigherSchoolCertificate,studentworkinStage5isneverthelesscrucialforfuturesuccess.Studentswillgainskillsandknowledgeoverthenexttwoyearswhichwillbeessentialfortheirfurtherlearningandalsodevelopappropriatestudyskillsandself‐discipline.TheinnovativecurriculumstructureinStage5allowsforaverybroadrangeofelectivesanditisimportantthatstudentsdiscusstheseoptionswiththeirparentsorcareprovidersandchoosesubjectsandcoursesthatcorrespondwiththeirskills,abilitiesandinterests.Studentsshouldseekadvicefromappropriatestaffiftheyareunsureofanydetailspriortomakingtheirfinaldecision.ThecommencementofStage5isanexcitingtimeforstudents.Theyareofferednewchallengesandforthefirsttimeintheirschoolcareershaverealchoicesintermsofthecurriculumtheystudy.Iwouldliketotakethisopportunitytowisheachstudentwell for their studies inStage5and imploreeachstudent to commit themselves to their studiesandenjoy thecurriculumpatterntheychoose.Wecannotguaranteethatallelectivesubjectswillactuallyrunasthisisdependentonsufficientstudentswantingtostudyaparticularunit. PersonalDevelopment,HealthandPhysicalEducation(PDHPE)

TheBoard’smandatory300‐hourcourseinPersonalDevelopment,HealthandPhysicalEducation.ThisintegratedcourseistobestudiedineachofYears7–10.

 NSWRECORDOFSCHOOLACHIEVEMENT(RoSA)In2012,theNewSouthWalesRecordofSchoolAchievement(RoSA)replacedtheSchoolCertificate.EligiblestudentswholeaveschoolpriortoreceivingtheirHigherSchoolCertificatewillreceivetheRoSA.NESAhasdevelopedinformationforteachers,studentsandparentsonhowtheRoSAwillbeimplemented.Seelink:http://educationstandards.nsw.edu.au/wps/portal/nesa/k‐10/leaving‐school/record‐of‐school‐achievementTheeligibilityrequirementsfortheRoSAareessentiallyunchangedfromtheSchoolCertificate,exceptforthedeletionofthe School Certificate tests. Requirements relating to curriculum, school attendance and the completion of Year 10 areidenticaltothosethatpreviouslyappliedfortheSchoolCertificate.ARoSAwillshowgradesforallcoursesastudenthascompleteduptothepointtheyleaveschoolincludingthosecompletedinYear10,Year11orevenYear12.

Atotaloftwelve(12)50hourcourses,whichincludesaminimumofTWOsetsoftwo50hourcourses(consistingof2unitswiththesameprefixoveroneortwoyears).

TheStage5semestersystemforelectiveshasbeenimplementedatThePondsHighSchoolinordertoengageallstudentsintheirlearninginaninterestingandchallengingway.Throughoursemestercoursesystem,theinterestsofstudentsarecateredforbyofferingadepthandbreadthofacademicopportunitiesthatfewschoolsarecapableofproviding.Thecurriculumisorganisedintounitsofworkwhichareonesemester(twoterms)inlength.Courseswhichrunalongtheselinesarereferredtoas“units”.Eachunitisworth50hourstowardstheRecordofSchoolAchievement.SemesterunitsareverticallyintegratedacrossStage5.ThismeansthatclassesmaybeacombinationofYear9and10students.Allstudentsinaverticalclassstudythesamecourse.Studentshavetheopportunitytostudysemesterelectiveunits,eitheras‘unitsofinterest’orasapatternofstudy(i.e.2ormoreunits).AtleastTWOdifferentpatternsofstudymustbestudiedtobeeligiblefortheRecordofSchoolAchievement.It is important to note that some semester units are designed to be completed sequentially – each unit becomes aprerequisiteforthenext.Forexample,tostudy‘Japanese2’,itisnecessarytohavesuccessfullycompleted‘Japanese1’.Allprerequisitesareclearlystatedintheunitdescriptionstofollow.Studentsmustbeaware that inorder tosatisfy theelective studyrequirements, studentsmayberequired tocompleteparticularunitsdesignatedas‘core’.Forexample,inordertoqualifyfor100hoursinCommercestudentsmustcompletetheunitsTEL1(Core1:Electronics1)andTEL2(Core2:Electronics2).ASSESSMENTOFSTAGE5COURSESAllunitsstudiedbystudentsconsistofinternalassessmentrequirements.Assessmentproceduresforeachunitwillvaryaccordingtotheneedsofthespecificunit.IfyouhaveanyquestionsinrelationtotheassessmentofaparticularunitpleasecontacttheHeadTeacherofthatsubjectarea.Studentachievementwillresultinagradebeingawardedwhichindicatesthegeneralperformanceofthestudentinthisunit. These results are submitted to the NESA and will be recorded on theRecord of SchoolAchievement. The courseperformancedescriptorsthatassistschoolsinallocatinggradesvarybetweensubjectareasbutareexplainedbytheNESAathttps://arc.nesa.nsw.edu.au/go/sc/sc‐grading/cpds/UNITPERFORMANCEDESCRIPTORSPerformancedescriptorshavebeendevelopedforeachStage5BoardDevelopedunit.Thedescriptorthatprovidesthebestoveralldescriptionofthestudent'sachievement,attheendofStage5,willdeterminethegradeawarded.ForBoardEndorsedSchoolDevelopedCoursesandContentEndorsedCourses,theCommonGradeScalewillbeused.Thedescriptorsdescribethemainfeaturesofatypicalstudent'sperformanceateachgrademeasuredagainstthesyllabusobjectivesandoutcomesforthecourse.

NON‐COMPLETIONOFTHEREQUIREMENTSOFASTAGE5(YEAR9AND10)COURSEAny course not satisfactorily completed appears on the student’s transcript of results as ‘Not Completed’.Where non‐completionisinamandatorycourse,thestudentwillnotbeeligiblefortheawardoftheRecordofSchoolAchievementandmaynotbeeligibletoenterPreliminary(Year11)courses.NESArequiresschoolstoissuestudentswithaminimumoftwocoursespecificofficialwarningsinordertogivethemtheopportunitytoredeemthemselves.CHANGINGYOURSELECTIONSStudentsmayapplytochangeunitschosenwhileinYears9and10.Considerableeffortismadetosatisfytherequestsfromstudents,however,itshouldbenotedthatclasseswillbeallocatedonthebasisoftheseprimaryselectionsandclasschangeswillonlybepossiblewhenthereisroominthenewclassesbeingselected.Studentsmustalsoreviewandberesponsiblefortheimpactthechangemayhaveontheir100hrcourseelectives.RequestsforchangewillnotbegrantediftheyrenderthestudentineligibletocompletetheStage5requirements.StudentswillbeprovidedwithprintoutsoftheirunitselectionsonseveraloccasionsthroughoutStage5.ThesewillbeusedtocheckthatthesubjectsbeingundertakenbyeachstudentsatisfiesboththeDepartmentofEducationandNSWEducationStandardsAuthorityrequirements.Twoweeksatthebeginningofeachsemesteraretheonlytimesforrequestsofchangeofunits.SAMPLEPROGRAMOFSTUDY

Inadditiontotheabovechosenpattern,studentswillhavesixextrasemesterunitsavailableoverthetwoyears.Thesemaybeusedas50hourinterestcourses.*Note: Studentsmust complete twoMinorCourses (twounitswith the same code–100hours). As students’ command of English grows, they are able to question, assess, challenge and reformulateinformationandusecreativeandanalyticallanguagetoidentifyandclarifyissuesandsolveproblems.Students engagewith and explore texts that includewidely acknowledged quality literature of past and contemporarysocietiesandengagewiththeliteratureandliteraryheritageofAboriginalandTorresStraitIslanderpeoples.Bycomposingandrespondingwithimagination,feeling,logicandconviction,studentsdevelopunderstandingofthemselvesandofhumanexperience and culture. Students completing Year 8 are at various stages in the development of their mathematical knowledge,understandingandskills.Somestudentsdemonstrateahighdegreeofconceptualunderstandingwhileotherstudentsstillneedtodeveloptheirbasicnumericalskills.ThenewK‐10MathematicsSyllabuscatersforawiderangeoflearningneedsbyhavingthreesub‐stages,Stage5.1,Stage5.2andStage5.3.Thesesub‐stagesarenotdesignedasprescribedcoursesandmanydifferent‘endpoints’arepossible.All studentsmust, as aminimum, complete topics coveredunder theStage5.1 level. It is expected that themajorityofstudentswillbeextendedtocomplete theStage5.2course.ForStudentswhohavedemonstratedagiftand/ora talenttowards learningMathematicswill complete the extension componentsdescribed in the Stage5.3 course. Students areplacedinappropriateclassesonteacherrecommendationandinaccordancewiththeirmathematicalabilitydemonstratedthroughoutstage5,inconjunctionwithstudentchoice.Ifastudentisfindingaleveltoodemandingitispossibletochangetoaneasierlevelinsecondsemester.However,studentswouldfinditdifficulttomoveuptoamoredemandingclassexceptinthemostexceptionalcases.Thethreesub‐stagesleadintodifferentstage6coursesasperthediagrambelow.Note:withnewHSCMathematicscoursesbeingintroducedin2018and2019,thisflowchartmaychange.5.1Pathway‐isdesignedforstudentswhoneedmoretimetodevelopbasicmathematicalskills.ThecontentofStage5.1reinforcestheskillsandknowledgedevelopedintheStage4(Years7and8)Mathematicscourse.5.2Pathway–itisexpectedthemajorityofstudentswillcompletethisstagebytheendofYear10.Studentswhoachieveatthislevelwillbeabletoaskquestionsthatcanbeexploredusingmathematics,andusemathematicalargumentstoreachand justify conclusions. When communicating mathematical ideas, they will be able to use appropriate language andalgebraic,statisticalandothernotationsandconventions inwritten,oralorgraphical form.Studentswillbeabletousesuitableproblemsolvingstrategies,whichincludeselectingandorganisingkeyinformationandtheywillbeabletoextendtheirinquiriesbyidentifyingandworkingonrelatedproblems.5.3Pathway‐isthemostabstractofthethreecourses.ItisdesignedforstudentswhohavehadnodifficultyinachievingthesyllabusoutcomesuptoandincludingStage5.2outcomes.Studentswhoprogresstothisstageshouldbeabletoworkeasilyandquicklywithmoredemandingmathematicalconcepts.Theywillbeabletousedeductivereasoninginproblemsolvingand inpresentingargumentsand formalproofs.Theywillbeable to interpretandapply formaldefinitionsandgeneralisationsandconnectandapplymathematicalideaswithinandacrosstopics.
