“D” GRADES

UC and CSU campuses consider a D grade in a required subject a Subject Omission.

Students who have received a D grade in a required course need to repeat the course in order to be eligible to apply to a UC or CSU campus…

HOWEVER…there are exceptions…

COLLEGE VISITS IN THE CCC…

• Get an insider’s view of the college and a flavor of the school• Chance for the representative to “put a face with a name”• Often the college representative is the reader for our region• Representatives offer insight into the application process• A chance for students to ask direct questions to representative • College representatives often give students their contact

information and offer assistance during the application process• Demonstrate interest!

IN-BETWEEN YEAR OR GROWTH (GAP) YEAR

• Allows student to grow and mature and recover from burnout.

• Options include established programs for personal growth, travel, service (City Year), internships in National Parks and 13th year programs for students who want to improve their grades and study a bit before college.

• East Coast Prep schools are a common option.• Check with individual colleges to learn about their GAP

year protocol.

APPLIED TECHNICAL SCHOOLS

• Often referred to as vocational schools. • They offer specific training, usually in shorter periods

of time than traditional community colleges or Universities.

• These schools usually cost more than Community Colleges and the credits earned at them may or may not be transferable to four-year schools.

• Local Examples: DeVry Institute, Bryman College, Media Tech Institute, Culinary Institute, UEI, Paul Mitchell, The School.

MILITARY

• The military is an option for all high school graduates.

• Eighteen year old boys are required to register with the selective service. They must register in order to be eligible for federal financial aid for college.

• Information and applications for Military contact and ROTC scholarships are available in the College and Career Center.

COMMUNITY COLLEGE/ 2 YEAR COLLEGE

• At a 2 year college, students can receive an Associate degree, pursue an applied career path, or choose to transfer to a 4 year University.

• TAG Program Option• Some California CC’s offer off campus housing; refer

to NAVIANCE for a complete list.• 123 California Community Colleges.• Ambassadors from Mira Costa CC are on our campus

each week to meet with students in the College & Career Center.

REASONS TO CONSIDER COMMUNITY COLLEGE

• You are short on college funds.• You are not sure about college. • You are not sure what kind of program you want to

pursue.• Your GPA is not so great and you want to build your skills

before transferring.• You’d like a career-oriented degree, such as a fashion-

design or computer-certification program. • You work, or have commitments, and need a flexible

schedule.

WHAT TO CONSIDER WHEN LOOKING FOR

THE “RIGHT” COLLEGE MATCH1. Start with who you are and why you are going.2. Size matters: Your college does not have to be bigger than your high school.3. A name-brand college will not guarantee your success.4. You don't need to pick a major to pick a college.5. You don't have to go to college right away, and it's never too late.6. There is a college for EVERYONE!7. Look for schools that match your strengths and learning style.8. Know yourself…Identify the priorities for you and your family.

SAT/ACT TEST INFORMATION

University of California:• Require SAT reasoning or ACT w/ writing• SAT subject exams optional (highly recommended for college of engineering

applicants (Math Level 2 and Science)

CSU: • Require SAT or ACT w/ writing

Private Schools:• Refer to school websites, some allow ACT exam to replace subject test

requirements.

* Check specific program testing requirements- as some majors require certain subject tests

LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION• Required by many colleges on Common Application (check

www.commonapp.org for individual college requirements).

• Recommend 10th or 11th grade teacher of an academic subject for letters of recommendation.

Students should ask teachers and counselors well in advance (at least 2 weeks) for a letter of recommendation, and thank them after.

• Letters to common application colleges are generally submitted through NAVIANCE by teachers and counselors.

• Student and parent must sign a FERPA waiver before a teacher or counselor writes and submits letter of recommendation.

• Brag packets for teachers and counselors are available on NAVIANCE (student account only) in the “about me” section

COUNSELOR LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION DEADLINES

For Early Admissions:▪October 1st 2015

▪ The deadline to request a LOR and submit student’s brag packet for all colleges/scholarships with an application deadline that is Dec. 1st 2015 or before.

For Regular Admissions:▪October 30th 2015

▪ The deadline to request a LOR and submit student’s brag packet for all colleges/scholarships with an application deadline that is Dec. 2nd 2015 or after.

NCAA Eligibility Center

1. Students need to register online by end of Junior year at: www.eligibilitycenter.org

2. Ensure students are meeting the NCAA course requirements.• Student athletes may no longer enroll in BYU Online courses in order to meet

NCAA Division I core course requirements. • ISOL classes are not NCAA approved.

3. Students need to bring signed FERPA form, found on NAVIANCE, and stamped & addressed envelope to TPHS Registrar.
