What is an Apprenticeship?

An Australian Apprenticeship is a learning pathway that combines paid on-the-job industry training

and formal study with a Registered Training Organisation (RTO). Upon completion, apprentice /

trainee can gain a nationally recognised qualification of a specific trade.

There are limitations on who is eligible to participate in an Australian Apprenticeship. Generally,

to be eligible, they must be of a certain age, be an Australian Citizen, Permanent Resident, or New

Zealand passport holder resident for more than 6 months or have an eligible visa. It is important you

check if you meet the requirements.

What are the difference between Apprenticeship and Traineeship?

• Apprenticeships are usually trade based. It is a structured training program of usually three

to four years. Upon successful completion of an apprenticeship, the apprentice becomes a

qualified tradesperson.

• Traineeships are usually trained in a vocational area. It is a formal training arrangement

between an employer and an employee of usually 12 months. Upon successful completion of

a traineeship, the trainee receives a minimum of a Certification II in their chosen vocation.

What is the Toyota TNT Program?

TNT Program offers you a nationally-recognised and accredited apprenticeship or traineeship. You

will attend training at Toyota Technical Training Centre or at TAFE and you will receive on-the-job

training and support while working with Toyota’s quality product and technology.

There are two pathways to suit your needs.

• You can choose to train for one year as a Toyota Service Technician and gain a Certificate II in

Automotive Vehicle Servicing (Light vehicle).

• Or you can choose the Toyota Pro Technician – Certificate III in Automotive Mechanical

Technology (Light Vehicle), a competency-based qualification which can be completed in

3-4 years.

When you complete your TNT apprenticeship, you may progress with further training to higher levels

of qualification such as Diagnosis Technician and Diagnostic Master Technician.

Off-Job Training Workshop

Off-Job training is conducted at the training facility. Training will be conducted by the TAFE

Instructor in both the class room and simulated workshop environment.

The training workshop will consist of:

• A recap session of the online Pre-Course Study. This session will focus on the areas where

apprentices / trainees might have struggled the most in the online assessments.

• A Recap test on the first day of the workshop on the Pre-Course Study, except for first module

Fundamental of Service. Apprentices / trainees are to study their Pre-Course Study Materials

prior to attending the workshop.

• Delivery of Core Knowledge Theory

• Skills practices

• Assessments

All TNT Program’s training facilities are equipped with the latest Toyota test equipment, special

service tools, utilising Toyota diagnostic tools (Global Tech Stream) and Toyota models vehicles.

Apprentices / trainees will be able to quickly utilise the skills learnt at their off-job training and

apply in their normal work environment with

appropriate Mentor support.

If an apprentice / trainee is unable to attend a

scheduled training workshop for any reason

(e.g. illness or injury) they must contact their

TNT Workplace Mentor or Service Manager

or the TAFE Instructor of that workshop

immediately. TAFE Instructor will organise

with the Service Manager to re-schedule the

apprentice/trainee into the next available class.

It is important to note that missing a scheduled

workshop may result in a delay in the

completion of apprenticeship / traineeship

as there are limited availability of scheduled

workshops. The first 8 modules are delivered

in sequence.

TNT Program Delivery Mode

The Toyota Apprenticeship / Traineeship are delivered through three modes:

• Online Pre-Course Study & Assessment

• Off-job Training Workshop

• On-job Dealership Tasks

Apprentices/trainees are required to demonstrate competency in all three modes to be deemed

competent in a module/unit.

Note: Competency is when you can demonstrate to both your trainer / TNT Workplace Mentor /

Supervisor that you can perform all the tasks or elements in your module independently and to

industry standards in the workplace.

Online Pre-Course Study and Assessment

Pre-Course Study and assessment underpins the core knowledge of the module. Pre-course study

and assessment must be completed prior to attending a workshop. This is done via the TNT online

learning management system.

Apprentices / Trainees can have multiple attempts at each online assessment. The required pass

mark is 100% before they can proceed to the workshop. If they are locked out of their assessment

(after 3 attempts), their TNT Workplace Mentor or Service manager can unlock the assessment in

the online system.

Apprentices / trainees cannot attend the workshop if they have not completed their online

assessment. It is important to note that missing a scheduled workshop may result in a delay in

apprenticeship completion due to limited availability of scheduled workshops in a year. There is no

Pre-Course Study and Assessment for the first Module Fundamentals of Service.

Assessment will take form in the following ways:

• Online pre-course study assessment for all modules except Fundamentals of Service

• Recap tests of Pre-course study materials at day 1 off the module’s off-job training workshop

• Theory assessment and skills practices at the off-job training workshop.

• Completion of dealership tasks for each module at your dealership under the observation of

your TNT Workplace Mentor.

• Verbal verification by your TNT Workplace Mentor / TNT Instructor.

Training contract

A training contract is a legal agreement between the Australian apprentice / trainee and the

employer. The contract protects both employer and apprentice / trainee’s interests. It must be

completed and signed and lodged with the relevant State/Territory training authority to register the

apprenticeship or traineeship.

The training contract will specify the type of apprenticeship or traineeship that will be undertaken

and outlines both parties’ obligation in association with the apprenticeship / traineeship including

probationary period details.

The signing and registration of the training contract is facilitated by an Australian Apprenticeship

Support Network Provider.

The training contract can be amended if required. This must be discussed and agreed by both the

employer and apprentice. The RTO must also support this application if the change affects the

training plan. The employer and apprentice / trainee must fill in an application form and submit to

your Apprenticeship Network Provider.

TNT Training Plan

Every apprentice or trainee must have a training plan in place as part of an Australian

Apprenticeship or Traineeship Program. The training plan is developed by the TAFE in conjunction

with the employer and the apprentice / trainee. The training plan must be signed within three

months of the start of the apprenticeship or traineeship.

On-Job Dealership Tasks

Dealership tasks are an essential component of the TNT Program. It allows apprentices / trainees to

practically apply the underpinning knowledge and skills obtained in their workshop by performing

these specified tasks in the dealership.

Following each training workshop, apprentices / trainees are to discuss the associated dealership

tasks with their mentors.

Dealership tasks are to be completed by the apprentice / trainee under the supervision of their

mentor within 60 business days after the completion of the associated off-job training workshop.

The TNT Workplace Mentor will only sign off these tasks once the apprentice / trainee demonstrates

their ability to perform the tasks independently and competently.

It is important that apprentice / trainee record the relevant Repair Order Numbers associated with

the dealership tasks in their logbook.

Training and Assessments

To successfully complete the Toyota Apprenticeship / Traineeship Program, apprentices / trainees

will need to:

• complete all the online Pre-Course Study and assessments

• attend all off-job training workshops

• completed all modules assessment, skills practices and dealership tasks.

Training will occur both at the dealership and at the training facility in the following formats:

• Online Pre-Course study that consist of foundational core knowledge readings

• Face to face theory delivery and skills practice at the training facility in both a classroom and

simulated workshop environment.

• The TNT Workplace Mentor demonstrating how to do various tasks.

• The TNT Workplace Mentor revising core knowledge materials with apprentices / trainees.

• Learning by observation of other seniors working.

• Undertaking dealership tasks in the workplace.

Page 9: Toyota Network Training

| Toyota Technical Training – TNT Program Student Information Guide 2019Page 16 Page 17 Toyota Technical Training – TNT Program Student Information Guide 2019 |

TAFE will issue a copy of the signed training plan to all parties.

It will outline specific details of:

• the type of qualification that will be issue upon completion

• training provider’s details

• the qualification units of competency selected

• any recognised prior learning arrangement

• any additional learning supports arrangement

• the expected start and completion date of the apprenticeship / traineeship

• training delivery modes (on-job / off-job) and number of training days / training hours

• training locations

• training assessment methods

• the competencies requirements and the timeframe for achieving competencies

Apprentices / trainees should inform the TAFE and the employer if they wish to be considered for

any credit transfer or recognition of prior learning (RPL) or have any language, literacy, numeracy

concerns or learning difficulties prior to the signing of the Training Plan.

TAFE will make assessment and arrange support or adjustment to support the apprentices / trainees

in their learnings and participation.

Credits / Recognition of prior learnings (RPL)

Credit transfers or RPLs may be available if the apprentice or trainee has documented evidence of

achievements in a relevant unit or course.

It is up to each TAFE to award credits / RPL. Please discuss RPL / credit transfer options with TAFE

when you are signing the enrollment papers.

You will need to provide Statement of Attainment or documented evidence for TAFE to assess it.

TNT Training Calendar

The TNT Training Calendar outlines the TNT workshop training for the year. Service managers and

TNT workplace mentors will use the TNT Training Calendar (available in the online management

system) as a reference when registering apprentices / trainees to nominate training start dates.

Apprentices / trainees should also refer to their allocated group training calendar when planning for

leave absences or to check when they are required to attend their TNT workshop training.

Allocation to a TNT Training Group

Apprentices / trainees will be allocated to a training group based on preferences specified by

the Service Manager. Once confirmed, the apprentices / trainees and their service managers

will be notified.

Allocation into the training group takes into consideration the preferred start date for training as

indicated by the Service Manager; the number of apprentices / trainees undertaking the training at

that dealership; class size; time of registration and other dealer requirements.

TNT Workplace Mentor

Every apprentice / trainee in the TNT Program will be assigned to a TNT workplace mentor to

support you throughout the whole apprenticeship.

The role of the TNT workplace mentor is to:

• Support apprentices / trainees in their learnings (e.g. by explanation or demonstration

of jobs),

• Provide regular feedback about their work and progress,

• Supervise apprentices / trainees in their work (as require),

• Allocate work to apprentices / trainees to enable dealership tasks completion,

utilising Toyota diagnostic tools (Global Tech Stream) and Toyota models vehicles.

Apprentices or trainees will be able to quickly utilise the skills learnt during training and apply it at

their workplace.

All training materials, workbooks and logbooks are provided at the start of each face-to-face

workshop.

Apprentices / trainees are responsible for looking after their own materials and completing these

materials over the course of the off-job training for that module.

Online Learning Management System

The TNT Program uses an online learning management system - ix1 to manage TNT apprentice /

trainee training progress.

The online management system enables all parties (Service Manager, TAFE instructor, apprentices /

trainees, TNT workplace mentor) to access the following information:

• TNT training workshop calendar
