PROTECTING SAUDI ARABIA’S

OCTOBER 2014

CELEBRATING 40 YEARS OF BRITISH STREET FURNITURE MANUFACTURING

$507 MILLION ‘JEWEL’

We worked in partnership with local contractors to ensure the world class sports city is safeguarded from vehicle borne terrorist attacks. 600 of Townscape’s PAS 68 CT Blocks were manufactured locally under an international licencing agreement.

Known as ‘the jewel in the desert’ the 60,000 seat sports facility boasts the Kingdom’s first FIFA standard football venue, a 2,000 seat multi-purpose indoor stadium and a 1,000 seat athletics pitch alongside a Mosque, hotels and sports hospital.

“The King Abdullah Sports City is one of the most exciting developments in the Middle East. It’s a world class attraction which requires world class perimeter protection.

“Our HVM specialists were asked to travel to the site to consult on how the venue and its visitors could be protected from any vehicle borne incursions. The Townscape CT Block was the ideal solution, the 100mm low profile foundation is suited to the local terrain and the prestigious PAS 68 mark was a vital requirement specified by the owners to ensure the highest level of perimeter security was achieved.”

Jonathan Goss, MD of Townscape, said:

Our hostile vehicle mitigation (HVM) expertise has become so world famous that when King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia wanted to protect his new $507 million international sports facility, he turned to our trusted Counter Terror (CT) Block.

TOWNSCAPE PROVIDESSEATING FOR NETWORK RAILWhen Network Rail required new seating as part of its refurbishment of York Railway Station, we knew exactly what would work.

Network Rail wanted stylish and functional seating for each of the platforms, and throughout the main station, which were low maintenance and cost effective. The benches needed to be sympathetic to the heritage of York station, whilst still being modern and stylish.

We provided and installed 60 of our contemporary Voltan stainless steel perch benches in two size options (1500mm and 1800mm). The steel zinc plated legs were polyester powder coated to contrast with the surrounding station colours. The perch style seating allowed the station to keep its quality appearance and still provides the functionality needed for busier platforms without taking up too much space.

CREATING TRANQUILLITYat North Middlesex University Hospital

Having successfully supplied the first phase of North Middlesex University Hospital’s upgrade back in 2011, we were recently invited back to take part in a new development.

North Middlesex University Hospital needed a range of outdoor furniture for its new distinctive garden development. The hospital specifically wanted a range of products to look modern and clean and be a tranquil place for patients

and visitors to relax and reflect.

After taking the brief we advised on which products would best enhance the area. The centrepiece of the development consisted of six bespoke hardwood benches, which were designed to coordinate with the timber planters manufactured and fitted in the first phase. We met the practical elements of the project by supplying two modern, space saving cycle shelters and 30 metres of safety railing.

Are you looking for bespoke designs for your street furniture projects?Call us to see what Townscape could create for you.

So, if you are ever at York station, be sure to enjoy a perch on one of our seats.

Managing Director

Because all Townscape street furniture is manufactured in our UK-based factory, we have the unique ability to design bespoke products to meet specific briefs. So, when Newcastle City Council approached us to help regenerate the Old Eldon Square War memorial, we were able to create a range of special benches. We incorporated bespoke plaques into the design of each bench end which represented the UK forces regiments over the past 90 years.

As we are celebrating 40 years of Townscape, we thought this issues’ Four of the Best should be dedicated to some of the interesting projects we’ve completed over the past four decades.

FOUR OF THE BEST

Mickey and Minnie can enjoy a break from the theme park hustle and bustle on one our comfy and stylish Baltimore seats. As one of our most popular timber seats, the Baltimore’s classic style, matched with its sustainable timber slats and high quality cast-iron ends, made the seat the ideal choice for the busy Village area of Disneyland® Paris.

DISNEYLAND®PARIS

Manchester Airport was one of the first airports in the UK to install our PAS 68 CT Block. All three terminals at the airport now have CT Blocks installed to prevent unwanted vehicle incursions at the departure and arrival areas. MAG was so impressed with our industry leading perimeter security solution that they specified CT Blocks at its airports in Bournemouth and the East Midlands.

MANCHESTER AIRPORT GROUP (MAG)

OLD ELDONSQUARE MEMORIAL

Nicknamed the ‘Walkie Talkie’ or the ‘Cheese Grater’, 20 Fenchurch Street is one of London’s newest skyscrapers and it’s safeguarded against terrorist attacks thanks to Townscape. We created a tailored hostile vehicle mitigation solution by topping our CT Block with granite and installing LED lights. This design protects the iconic building whilst creating a high quality urban landscape at the base of the property.

20 FENCHURCHSTREET

This is just a small selection of some of the great projects and partners we’ve worked with over the years and we look forward to many more in the years to come. If you would like to see more of our projects, visit the case study section on: www.townscapeproducts.co.uk
