Every Child. One Voice.
As we head into March, we have several events to look
forward to. Our annual Camp Fair will take place on the morning
of Friday, March 8. This is a wonderful opportunity for you and your children to learn more about many of the summer programs that are available in the area. Representatives from many of these organizations will be here to handout brochures, provide information, and answer questions regarding their summer programs.
Spring Break takes place the week of March 11-15. We hope this is a relaxing time for all of our Towne Acres families. Hopefully, we will have nicer weather over the break so our students can enjoy the outdoors. Our next family engagement night is our Art Show and Tech Night on Thursday, March 21st. Our event will begin at 6:00 in the Little Theater with a brief overview of Digital Citizenship and internet safety. After this introductory session,
the cafeteria will open up the Art Show and Bingo will begin in the gym. We will also have breakout sessions in three of the Building A classrooms that will provide information for families regarding safe internet usage. Johnson City’s annual “Rejoice in the Arts” program will be taking place at the Johnson City Mall on Thursday, March 28th. Our 2nd graders will be representing Towne Acres this year and will begin performing at 5:20 outside of J.C. Penney.
I would like to say thank you for communicating student absences so well this nine weeks. We have been hit hard by sickness over the past couple of weeks, and we greatly appreciate you calling in to let us know and for touching base with your child’s teacher. Our custodians have been hard at work each and every day keeping the rooms as clean and sanitized as possible. Hopefully, there is a light at the end of the tunnel, and we can all get healthy and back to 100%.

Hello Towne Acres families,
I hope you’re surviving these last few weeks of winter. Spring is right around the corner, and with it will come better health and better weather too! We have lots of great things going on here at TA
that we can look forward to as well.
Our camp fair is happening on Friday, March 8th. There will be information available about various summer camps and programs around the area that your child can collect and bring home to you. It’s a great way to discover new interests and to plan ahead for summer.
Be sure to mark your calendar for our next Family Engagement Night which will be happening Thursday, March 21st. In addition to our annual art show, we’ll have bingo, snacks, and a special online safety presentation. More information will be coming home with your child later this month. We hope you’ll make plans to attend this fun event!
Be sure to wash your car at Ultimate Shine car wash! Thirty percent of all sales through May 31st will go to our school when you use fundraiser code 281 at checkout. The location nearest the school is 304 W Oakland Avenue, but you can use the code at any of their locations in the Tri-Cities.
I’d like to brag on a few people. Beth Simpson has been arranging wonderful monthly lunches for our teachers and staff this year. Thank you, Beth for taking the lead on this one and serving our school in this way! Casey Lovelace spearheaded our Box Tops collections this year and has done a fabulous job. Thank you Casey! A huge thank you to Jenn Belanger who is leading our diversity and inclusion committee and continues to build it to better serve the unique needs of students at our school. Amber Bumgarner is working hard to prepare for spring spirit gear sales - thank you, Amber! Thanks also to Kathryn Comerford who has been researching and planning for our yearbook this year (if you have photos you’d like to have included, please send them to her). Anisa Gluzberg is making plans for an awesome field day for our kids this year. Thank you, Anisa!
There are so many more I didn’t mention who continue to serve our school in both big and small ways. If you’re interested in supporting your school and your child through PTA, we have something that’s a good fit for you and your family.
Thanks,Melissa Larzo, PTA President

Digital Safety and Your FamilyWith mobile smart devices such as smartphones, kids can stay connected everywhere they go. This offers many opportunities and advantages, but with new opportunities, we often see new challenges such as: • How to determine who should “friend” or “follow” your account • When to share photos or videos online • How to respond to negative remarks on social media • Whether to use location-based services on apps • How much screen time is appropriate
When giving your kid access to their own digital device, it is important to have ongoing conversations about digital safety so that they can develop smart decision-making skills online.
Additional Digital Safety Resources • The SmartTalk: Interactive site that helps families have a digital safety conversation and set written ground rules to clarify technology limits. • Connect Safely: Parents, teens, educators, and advocates will find tips, safety advice, articles, news, analysis, video and other resources to promote safe, effective use of connected technology. • Common Sense Media: Info about ways to support youth as they transform into digital citizens. Includes reviews and ratings for apps and games. • Net Cetera: (OnGuardOnline.Gov): Parent friendly guides with information from the Federal Trade Commission on how to protect your child from identity theft and phishing scams.• Google: Be Internet Awesome provides children with the tools necessary to explore the digital world safely and securely.• Instagram: This parent guide highlights key features of the Instagram app that parents should be aware of so they can ensure their children are protecting themselves.
Hilton
Hello Towne Acres Family,
Hopefully, as you are reading this, I am now at Towne Acres full time. I have always split my day with another school. We have had an officer on
maternity leave and she is now back at work. This will allow all schools to have their own SRO. I wanted to let you know the school system and the
police department are dedicated to school safety and the SRO program. The SRO staffing has only been an issue because of man power issues at the department and not a lack of commitment.
In March I will begin an after school program with 4th grade boys, that want to participate, called Towne Acres Distinguished Gentlemen. If you think your 4th grade boy would be interested, please email me at the address below. The boys were given information about this the last week of February.
Best regards!Officer Hilton, School Resource [email protected]

Indian Trail and Liberty Bell schools are joining together to host Social Media Presentations. They would like to help provide insight to parents of how our kids are using social media and social gaming at school, and to learn about what you are seeing at home. Two dates are coming up. March 25th at Liberty Bell from 6-7pm and March 26th at Indian Trail from 6-7pm. They are encouraging all 4th grade parents to attend. Check our FB page for more details as we get closer!

Great things are happening in our Library Media Center! Thanks to your generosity, our book fair was a HUGE success! We were able to purchase a new circulation desk computer, scanner, and popular fiction books.
With help from our outstanding PTA, we are enjoying our nonfiction, curriculum aligned books. Plus, a big shout out to our School Board for providing our school with over 100 nonfiction books to support our new science and social studies standards.
Visit www.commonsensemedia.com to research if a movie or book is pertinent to your child’s age.

It has been a busy time around here since we started back in January. The 3rd grade classes performed their musical “The Wonder of Music” at the January PTA Meeting. First grade is preparing for the February 21 PTA meeting. The 4th grade Chorus just sang at the School Board meeting. They made everyone proud of them. The 2nd grade classes will be singing their Disney songs for the “Rejoice in the Arts” on Thursday, March 28 at the Mall at Johnson City. More details to follow.
The 3rd and 4th grades will be learning to play the recorder after we come back from Spring break. Kindergarten will be performing at the April 8 PTA meeting. They are working on American Folk Songs. And don’t forget our Talent Show on May 21. I look forward to seeing you and your family at some of these events!

In art we have been spending the winter drawing landscapes. All kinds of landscapes: landscapes with bridges, landscapes with waterfalls, landscapes with lighthouses, landscapes with patterns, landscapes with windmills, winding roads, farms, villages, big cities… even castles on the moon!
We have also been concentrating on coloring with saturated color! Our Towne Acres s t u d e n t s have a b e a u t i f u l art show on display at Central Office for the month of February and we are working on projects for our Family Engagement Night Art Show in the spring.

I would like to give a great big thank you from Coach Jeffries and my student teacher, Coach Trammell, for the many family and friends for sending awesome healthy students to
Towne Acres. We are putting a great emphasis this 2018-2019 school year on the many varieties of sports and games. We recently completed our bowling and soccer unit, and Coach Trammell will be wrapping up our basketball unit this nine weeks. With every student and class here at Towne Acres, my desire is to instill leadership and creativity in every student. There are games and activities that I have created that have become student favorites such as Castleball, Pirates, Yoshi and Sproutball to inspire students to use their personal creativity, which I will put to the test in the next 9 weeks with a group assignment, “Create Your Own Game”. This year we will have each 4th and 3rd grade
class create small groups and work together to create one game that they will teach and have the rest of the class participate in the game itself. So get those creative vibes going guys!! Also, looking forward to another fun filled successful Field Day. We encourage all friends and family to come out and enjoy.

Thank you so much for your support in making this such a great school year! In the coming months, one topic we will be focusing on is internet safety. I will be encouraging your child to engage in family discussions about the information we discuss. Here are a few tips for parents on keeping your child safe online:
• Establish clear guidelines about internet usage. Consider creating a family media agreement with a list of websites you have approved as well as approved places and times to use devices.
• Be aware of who your child may be chatting with online, including video gaming platforms. Ask your child to show you how to play or use the apps/games that they enjoy.
• Teach your child to keep certain information private. Some people use the acronym YAPPY - Your full name, address, phone number, passwords & your plans.
• If you choose to allow your child to use chat features, role play different situations such as what to do if someone asks them to send a picture or tries to send your child a picture.
• Respect age limits on sites. Don’t allow your child to sign up for social media sites when they are under 13.
Two great websites with more information for parents are www.netsmartz.org & www.commonsensemedia.org. As always, never hesitate to contact me if I can assist your child in any way.
