New recycling program takes
back half-empty paint cans
Rhode Island is the fifth state in the country to join PaintCare a new recycling program that lets residents rid themselves of all those cans of paint cluttering up their basements
The Rhode Island law requires that paint manufacturers create and fund an easy-to-use costshyeffective and environmentallyshyresponsible program to manage unused or leftover paint in the state The program is funded by a fee added to the purchase price of paint at retailers throughout the state The fees range from 35 cents to $160 depending the size of the container
PaintCare sites accept all brands of house paint stain and varnish no matter how old they are during their regular business hours
This new program offers Rhode Islanders convenient options to safely recycle or disshypose of unwanted latex and oilshybased paint by taking it to one of the new collection sites at particishypating paint retailers said state Department of Enviornmental Management Director Janet Coil
Thanks to the cooperation of the paint industry we are able to provide this valuable service for Rhode Island households and painting contractors
In addition to creating a new market for recycled paint this program will also reduce waste and keep the toxic ingredients from older paints out of the envishyronment
So far several sites are availshyable in northern Rhode Island and more are expected

The zoning change from industrial to commershycial was approved for the 7000-square-foot building by the Town Council inJanuary 2013 Patel had said he plans to move his liquor store to the new building along with a Subway sandwich shop
Now prior to construcshytion the project has been enlarged to 17600 square feet to also include a conshyvenience store on the first floor and a second-floor that offers professional offices or perhaps a dance or karate center according to Director of Planning and Community Development Kelley Morris
A second lot Lot 4 was added to the project
Meanwhile the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management is raising concerns about the abutting Peterson-Puritan Superfund site telling Patel in a letter it appears that porshytions of the proposed infiltrashytion basin on Lot 4 lie within the Superfund boundary
It says the Environmental Protection Agency is noting that limited testing has found waste material and recomshymends a site investigation should be conducted
On the countertop busishyness owner Bryan Cormier of Cumberland is seeking a use variance on a residentiallyshyzoned lot at 46 Pine Swamp Road The site contains a two-bay two-story garage of concrete block
The Countertop Shop has been in business at 420 Mendon Road opposite the Marshall Avenue intersection but will be displaced when
