Towards a Global Network of Food Safety Knowledge Hubs
KLSWG Database Subgroup
Knowledge & Learning Systems Working Group
GFSP Denmark Working Group Meetings, April 24-26, 2014
What is the GFSP goal?
Rapid scaling of food safety practices around the world

In what ways can open models achieve this goal?
Leverage investmentsImpact diverse stakeholders
Foster diverse business models

How does the GFSP do this?
First - adopt open operating policies
#1 Partners will give consideration to the adoption and use of open strategies and tactics across all GFSP activities including: open content (including Open Educational Resources and Open Courseware), open data, open access (research), open government, open source software, open standards, open policy, open licensing and open hardware.
#2 To stimulate innovation in the adoption of open methods and the creation of new business models that leverage open methods GFSP partners should consider the use of open competitions either within specific projects or in general.

How does the GFSP do this?
Second - start sharing in multiple languages
Develop ways to share open and proprietary knowledge assets
Create a hub for sharing best practicesKnowledge & Learning Systems Working Group
GFSP Denmark Working Group Meetings, April 24-26, 2014
What should technology do?provide a federated infrastructure as the data sharing
backbone
Develop a modular and scalable architecture that may embrace and facilitate the creation of
“glocal” networks for food safety capacity building

hub vs. centralized approach• information resides at site of provider
– (metadata) descriptions exchanged, facilitate information dissemination & discovery
– powerful framework for multilingual information discovery• secure & safe way of exchanging information
– define access, use, re-use rights & licenses– unique identification of information providers/consumers, knowledge
assets, people• enhancing existing sites/platforms with information
– making existing systems interoperable rather than building yet-another-system
– users discover more relevant data through platforms they already useKnowledge & Learning Systems Working GroupGFSP Denmark Working Group Meetings, April 24-26, 2014

next steps
1. Deploy & validate GFSP Global Knowledge Hub– develop core infrastructure components & services – test & validate in selected KLSWG use cases (e.g. JIFSAN,
NCFPD, MSU, …)– integrate with Hubnet
2. Pilot setting up GFSP Local Knowledge Hubs in capacity building projects– adapt & provide federated knowledge discovery services to
existing projects (e.g. China, Malaysia)– demonstrate Local Knowledge Hub in a new project (e.g.
Colombia) Knowledge & Learning Systems Working GroupGFSP Denmark Working Group Meetings, April 24-26, 2014
