According to local club, Disc Fanatics of Kansas, member Rick Petrie, “We needed to stay ahead of the demand for this sport as it’s becoming more popular. What really broke the ice for us was being set up at the Get Around 2 It! event in May [2012], and having people really recognize that we need some space.” Petrie states that the course will be completed by the time of the tournament. It has taken about a year for the county to create the course, and the club to raise money through sponsoring of the course fairways. Sponsors and other attendees will be able to see all of the sponsor plaques on display at the rib- bon cutting on the 22nd. So how does one pursue an interest in this burgeoning sport? There are three courses in Manhattan; Warner Park, Fairmont Park, and KSU Campus. Petrie rec- ommends these three basic steps for beginners. 1) Avoid the temptation to take your standard Frisbee to a course 2) Visit a local retailer- there are several options including Pathfinder, On the Wild Side, Dick’s and Wal Mart to get some official disc golf discs 3) Go to the first hole of a course. “If it’s nice enough for a rookie to be on the course, it’s nice enough for the older players to be out there—we love to help new players!” The local club, Disc Fanatics of Kansas, currently have a Tuesday night league, and a Sunday afternoon league that meets at 1:30 p.m. The additional 9 holes that advance the Fairmont course to the only 18-hole course in Manhattan means that out- side tournaments now can be played in Manhattan.
