Manhattan is proud to be the host site for this basket- ball tournament for the past 23 years. This year, John and Mildred Lindholm were recognized as our first 2A team host emeriti. John and Mildred have volunteered in a variety of positions with 2A since 1993. Their dedication and contin- ued support to the youth of Kansas, the community of Manhattan and their passion for high school basketball is greatly appreciated. They were recognized on Championship Day with a cer- tificate of appreciation and a standing ovation from the crowd. The success of 2A is due to many dedicated volunteers and businesses working together to provide teams, schools and visiting communi- ties a memorable experience. Celebrate with Flint Hills Discovery Center!

It’s official- as of April 14 the FHDC has been open for an entire year. The ManhattanConvention and Visitors Bureau is celebrating their one-year anniversary activities onSaturday, April 13. Visit the FHDC from 10 am – 4 pm. Attendees can build with recyclablematerials, participate in recycling stations, watch and learn with live-animal programs, enjoya scavenger hunt, Flint Hills themed arts & crafts and much more!

More than 66,000 have visited the FHDC since their opening in 2012.

Another April event at the FHDC is the Go See It! Lecture Series: Oregon Trail throughthe Flint Hills. This event is April 18 from 7-8 pm. It’s free and open to the public- thispresentation is for all ages. Learn where and how to explore this piece of American history! Meet on the third floor of the FHDC.

Theatre• SpringDance will take place April 5 and 6 at 7:30 in McCain Auditorium. The K-State dance program will entertain audiences with tap, jazz, ballet and modern dance pieces celebrating the arrival of spring!

• The Heiress takes place in New York in the 1850’s- but it comes to the Nichols stage April 25-27, and May 2-4 at 7:30 pm. The last show will be May 5 at 2:30 pm in Nichols Theatre. Watch young Catherine Sloper fall in lovewith the wrong man, and the trials and tribulations that follow!

• Alison Balsom and the Scottish Ensemble perform Vivaldi, Albinoni and more at 7:30 pm on April 9. Find them on the McCain Auditorium stage.

• Itzhak Perlman follows on the McCain stage on Sunday, April 21 at 4:00 pm. He’s renowned for being charming and talented- in fact he performed at the inauguration of President Barack Obama in January, 2009. Don’t miss this international treasure.

• Classic fairy tale, Swan Lake, will be performed by the Russian National Ballet Theatre on Sunday April 28, at 4:00 pm. The Russian Ballet Theatre was founded in Moscow in the late 1980’s. Their performance of one of Tchaikovsky’s most enduring scores will keep the whole family mesmerized! • Check out the Columbian Theatre in Wamego for the Sound of Music. Shows are April 5-7, 12-14, and 19-21. It’s the classic story of a postulant-turned-governess and the family she works for. Farm Bureau Financial Services is hosting the annual 2-dayCommercial - BusinessMax & AgMax UnderwritingConference. Underwriters, Managers & Business Supportpersonnel from an 8-state region will bring approximately100 attendees together to discuss changes within thecompany, and network with regional colleagues.

Shawna Oliver, Commercial Ag Underwriter with FBFSsaid, “The Manhattan Convention & Visitors Bureau has beenvery helpful with ideas for our conferences, including diningestablishments and entertainment suggestions. We will be taking a tour in a charter bus around the Manhattan area.The CVB will provide us with a tour guide to give the history ofour great city.” The CVB will also provide welcome packetsand volunteers to help with registrations for the group. “It has been really easy to work with the CVB and learned thatthey offer many services that we were not aware of that willhelp make our conference a success.”

This annual event to helpexpose Manhattan visitorsand residents to local busi-nesses will be held May 2ndfrom 5-8:00 pm at theNature Exploration Center inSunset Zoo! This will be the5th year for GA2I. It’s theday to finally get aroundto all the things we saywe will someday do!

Talk to local businesses-get information, doorprizes, hands-on activitiesand more at this event. Allare welcome to attend freeof charge. There will be

approximately 50 exhibitorson-hand. Bring the wholefamily- and start planning allthe things you’re going to dothis summer!

The first full week of May is recognized as National Traveland Tourism week each year. As we continue to worktowards meetings and conventions, leisure tourists andsports groups gathering in The Little Apple®, we celebratethe number one position that the tourism industry holdsin rank among all U.S. industry exports.

Here are some of the latest facts and figures regardingtourism on a national scale. For further information, visitustravel.org.• 1 in 8 U.S. jobs depend on travel and tourism• There is a $1.9 trillion economic output generated by domestic and international travelers

• Each U.S. household would pay $1,000 more in taxes without the revenue generated by travel and tourism

• Top leisure travel activities for U.S. domestic travelers: 1) visiting relatives 2) shopping 3) visiting friends 4) fine dining 5) beaches.

• Business travel alone (meetings, events, incentive travel and general) generated $248.8 billion in spending in 2011 in the US.

Last July the Kansas Riverwas designated as a NationalRiver Trail. The designationseeks to “increase opportu-nities for outdoor recreationalong the river, encouragecommunity stewardship, andpromote tourism that fuelsthe local economies.” TheKansas River is one of ninedesignated National WaterTrails.
