TRAVEL EVENT 2008THE FESTIVAL FOR MOTORBIKE TRAVELLERS

At the annual spring Travel Event, Touratech's company headquarters in the Black Forest are transformed into a heaven for enduro fans and motorbike travellers. Up to 5000 visitors from Germany and abroad make the pilgrimage to this event in the small community of Niedereschach, using the opportunity to obtain first-hand information on all aspects of motorbikes from the numerous exhibitors, enjoy exciting film presentations and attend interesting introductory courses and lectures. The Travel Event 2008 was the fourth of its kind in Niedereschach. After the first two were held in southern France, due to the increasing numbers of participants the Touratech company headquarters seemed the logical place for future events. The trial shows by Ian Rowley and Rolf Epting, the Touratech shop, the factory seconds sale and the extensive programme in the training room with GPS workshops and presentations are always visitor magnets.

Among the many exhibitors to enrich the programme were Bike & Travel (KTM test rides), Tourenfahrer, Enduro Abenteuer, Hitachi Power Tools, Magellan (GPS devices), Teambuctou (tour operator), BMW Enduro-Park Hechlingen (Enduro taster courses), Gravel Travel from Namibia, Motorrad Abenteuer, Move Motorradreisen, Mottouren, BOS exhausts, Zupin (hlins suspension systems), Kahedo Seats and Bags, Rukka (clothing), Source, MSR and Snowpeak (outdoor accessories), Motorrad Grneberg and Honda Schwer (test rides).


TOURATECH TRAVEL EVENT 2008

ImpressionsFor the first time there was a very special treat for all off-roading enthusiasts in 2008: On the factory premises an enduro track was built, where visitors could test ride the brandnew BMW G 450 X and the BMW G 650 Xchallenge, which proved to be extremely popular! Also, the BMW Touratech Racing riders - including German motocross legend Bernd Eckenbach - demonstrated their skills and helped to create an exciting race atmosphere.

19Travel Event 2008

After Doris Wiedemann set off "In the Tracks of Genghis Khan" in her exciting travel report on the Friday evening, Herbert and Ramona Schwarz took visitors on a breathtaking motorbike trip around Africa's biggest lake on the Saturday evening.

"The End of the Rains" consists of exciting film footage of the world's first adventure tour on a BMW F 800 GS, created in close co-operation with BMW Motor- rad, and was a particular highlight that attracted a lot of visitors. There was a standing ovation at the end.


THE FESTIVAL FOR MOTORBIKE TRAVELLERS

AnticipationThe programme also always includes a number of guided tours through the Black Forest. Long-distance touring specialists help to plan motorbike-trips, both great and small. The evening bonfire at legendary "Lake Touratech" makes for a very atmospheric close to the festivities. Many tours have been planned and travelling partners been found there, and there is never a shortage of bike talk - so often the germ from which many two-wheeled adventures burst forth. Comments such as, "The best travel event to date" are typical of the positive response that pleased us tremendously.

For our part, we're already looking forward to the Travel Event 2009!

The IMO-100R50 Rallye is the new rallye computer from TOURATECH.It combines the tried and tested rallye functions of the IMO-100R with very small dimensions (93 x 57 x 33mm).The IMO-100R50 Rallye has a robust, waterproof aluminium housing.

Although it has been conceived as rallye computer, it can be used as replacement instrument (German TV Type Approval)

The IMO-100R50 Rallye easily connectsto your motorcycle's electrical system.It accepts 6 to 30 volts Ac or DC supply.A magnet for the wheel, and the wheel sensor are included.An optional handlebar remote control can be plugged into the IMO-100R50 Rallye directly.

The IMO-100R Sport is the ideal choice for the IGE 3-hour enduro championship or similar enduro races. When used in combination with a handlebar control (see next pages), the driver can always display the current lap time incl. average speed as well as the number of laps. The stop watch also helps you control the remaining race time. By using the memory function for storing lap times (up to 300) you can analyse your performance after the race.

The "+ version of the IMO-100R can be fitted to motorcycles w/o battery or motorcycles with 6 volt systems.It is equipped with an integrated regulator/rectifier. On the # version the battery voltage indicator will display 11.5 V at all times.

Please state the required final RPM value (analogue display) when ordering. You have the choice between 12,800 RPM and 15,600 RPM.

Carimpuls pulse splitter

In order to determine the speed with our IMO range a magnet is fitted to one of the wheels and a sensor counts the revolutions. Particularly withcars it is difficult to find a good place on the wheel for the magnet and the sensor and, for example, the drive shaft is once more placed underneath up to the wheel and there are "too many" pulses per wheel revolution. Even with quads the wheel size can be too small to set it on the IMO. We have designed a pulse splitter for these problems. You can use this to reduce (split) the pulses by factors of 2, 4, 8 and 16. This pulse splitter is simply connected to the sensor lead, the split factor is set and there you are with the right speed on the display even though the number of revolutions on the drive shaft, for example, is twice as many as the wheel revolutions.

Description

It comes with a remote control, a cable for connecting a GPS system and all necessary installation hardware, including waterproof connectors.Dimensions NAV

The NAV- Assistant is a direction indicator originally developed for rallye use. When riding fast, the device informs the rider of the current course and any deviation from the correct course. The LED digits on the display show the current course and the green and red LED's indicate the direction - red for left turns and green for right turns. The rider can monitor the course from the corner of his eye and needs not turn look away from the track.

Basically, the NAV- Assistant works like a compass:Three seven-segment digits indicate the current course. The course is entered via a remote control. Eight red and green LED's tell the rider when to change direction. The device also features a magnetic compass which is calibrated by an external GPS to avoid deviations caused by the metallic parts of the motorbike. Once calibrated the data is stored in the NAV- Assistant and remains stored even if no

thGPS system is connected or if the GPS is defective (9 blue LED lights permanently). The NAV- Assistant also complements the Garmin GPS system in an ideal way. At speeds above 20 km/h, the NAV- Assistant takes over the data from the GPS (blue LED flashes), at lower speeds the GPS system does not provide correct data. In this case the Nav-Assistant switches to compass operation. If you want to follow waypoints with the GPS connected, you must switch to "Route; then the red and green LED's indicate the direction when you reach the next waypoint

The NAV- Assistant consists of three printed boards with electronic components. The top board includes the three-digit display, greenand red LED's indicating the direction and a blue control LED.The unit is integrated in a robust and waterproof aluminium housing.

Rallyists have used roadbook holders for years. More and more touring riders also want to benefit fromnotes that appear by simply turning a knob". Rally roadbook holder are often too big. Many motorcyclesdo not have enough space or the rider cannot see the instruments. There is a small roadbook holder available: the RB compact.

RB-TTRB-TT Roadbook Holder

We used our many years of experience to design our roadbook holder. It features a unique DOUBLE MOTION drive" which means that two motors control paper movement. The paper is always tightened and cannot unwind even with strong vibration. We deliberately decided not to use rubber driving belts which are prone to ageing and cracks. We have chosen a direct drive instead. The RB-TT standard package includes a lighting kit and handlebar control. The roadbook holder is easy to mount and the electrical connections are simple. Just connect two cables to the power supply. Then plug in the handlebar control. The handlebar bracket is pre-assembled and is rubber mounted. For the first time ever, step motors are being used in this new Roadbook holder. Using an intelligent control that recognises the entire length of the Roadbook and the position (beginning ... end), these step motors are controlled in normal operation to ensure that an even feeder speed is achieved for the Roadbook.However, much higher step motor revolutions are used for fast rewinding. A quick press of the remote control moves the Roadbook forward by one picture; the picture height can be set between approx. 50 and 100 mm. This greatly increases the safety, since the rider is not so distracted when moving on to the next picture. The Roadbook lighting adapts automatically to the prevailing light conditions.

Introduction to the subject

There have recently been major advances in the development of GPS navigation, and it is now an essential part of modern mobility. We have been taking GPS on our tours with us for many years now. We have practical experience of all of the devices in this catalogue often under extreme conditions. See also our films on the test rides starting on page 947, or the travelogue here in the catalogue, which starts on page 936. We develop and manufacture motorbike mountings and lots of other accessories, such as our patented GPS handlebar brackets, ourselves.GPS = Global Positioning System. The GPS satellite system comprises 25 satellites that transmit positional signals to earth. GPS receivers collect (acquire) data from up to 12 possible satellites above the horizon, and use the four strongest signals to calculate the current position. The position can be determined to within 5 metres. Today's modern devices can receive all the positional signals from 12 satellites simultaneously. The newly developed, highly sensitive GPS chipsets, such as SiRFStar III, are used in most GPS systems. This is a quantum leap with regard to GPS performance, even in deep street canyons or dense woods and forests. Movement is always required in order to use a GPS receiver actively. Our systems can be roughly divided into outdoor systems and more road-oriented systems. With the units we select, we focus above all on stability and suitability for use on a motorbike and all sorts of outdoor activities. With regard to the hand-held terminal, we also look out for a compact size and ease of use. Most of the GPS systems shown here can also be used in a car. Depending on the particular model, it can be used for detailed navigation and TMC traffic information. These criteria all result in the optimum balance of price/performance, which Touratech guarantees you as the customer.

The Garmin ZUMO on page 100 has proved particularly popular for use on motorbikes. With regard to ease of use, comfort and navigation on a PC, it leaves virtually nothing to be desired. The Garmin Map278 on page 102 is one of the most universal, most robust and most suitable GPS systems of all for long-distance motorcyclists. We have included the innovative continuation of the GPS concept on motorbikes with the RiderII by TomTom, which is on page 122. Magellan blazes entirely new trails with its Triton series. A wide range of topographic maps can be used with these systems with Touratech QV (page 167). Crossover completes our range of Magellan devices.
