Dress Code ClarificationJackets/OuterwearDue to the cold weather, we are not taking wrong jackets from the students in the morning. However, students should still be in the correct outerwear once they are in the building. This means that all students should be in solid navy, purple, white or black. If it is a HHMS jacket, it may be any combination of navy, purple, white or black.

Once students enter 1st block, the correct outerwear must be worn for the rest of the day.

If a student enters the room in the wrong jacket, ask the student to remove the jacket and put it away. If the student refuses, send an email to discipline. (If a student refuses to remove the jacket, discipline will take the jacket upon arriving to the classroom).

SkirtsSkirts must be to the knee. If the skirt is not to the knee, leggings must be worn in Gonzalez.underneath.

If a skirt is too short, discipline will be notified and the student will be required to change in to a pair of pants or leggings (navy or khaki) under the skirt.

The Ultracrepidarian MindsetBy Ms. Quin Navarra

Ultracrepidarians surround us. This odd word is hardly used anymore; however, it is quite relative to issues we face at Hammond High Magnet. Used as an adjective or verb, ultracrepidarian basically refers to discussing matters that we really don’t understand or those of which we have no first-hand knowledge. The main culprit that we battle almost daily is social media. During the last month, several incidents on campus have leaked to the general public. These incidents then get discussed on social media, and the stories become almost ludicrous. Instead of handling the issue quietly and competently, the school has to deal with ill-informed people spreading erroneous information. We

understand that every child at HHMS is loved, and parents are just concerned. Call the school. Call the central office. The absolute worst path to take is Facebook Boulevard. What makes it worse is the conversations on Facebook then merge into even more absurd assumptions. We all know what happens when we assume.

As a teacher, I become quite frustrated dealing with incidents. We are often the last to find out about anything, so we feel helpless when students ask us questions. What is even more frustrating, however, is reading or hearing inane comments about HHMS. HHMS is my home. A few events over the years have been unsettling, but I have never felt truly unsafe. It hurts to read the comments about our school, especially when most of them are completely false. I refuse to comment on social media about it, though, because I am not sinking to that level. Simply put, it would not solve anything.

When information is needed, go to the proper sources. Do not spread misinformation via social media or texting just because you enjoy drama. Drama leads to damage, and damage is often irreparable.
