The former Tobacco Manufacturing Plant represents a historic structure of extraordinary interest, destined in the City’s plans to university functions.Located along the river Po, surrounded by the Colletta and Arrivore parks, it borders on the transformation areas of Variante 200 – in particular the Vanchiglia/Regio Parco Yard – and the route of the future Metro Line 2.The historical and environmental context, the nearness to the new public transport routes but also to the new humanistic site along the Dora, makes the Tobacco Manufacturing Building a site of particular interest.

The project involves the former “Torino Esposizioni” site: the building, designed on 1933 by Pier Luigi Nervi, was dedicated to the big fairs and exhibitions (mainly fashion, and auto shows). The site will be reshaped and the buildings reused to host a new multipurpose cultural facility, that will consist of a theater, a public library and of the enlargement of the Architectural Studies Campus.

The City of Health should arise from the redesigning of the main hospital site of the Turin area, the Molinette, to then extend and spread out to the surrounding urban fabric, within the south quadrant of the city.

The environmental picture represented by the Po and the river landscape, the presence of Metro Line 1 and the nearness to the Lingotto railway station and motorway access roads make this area particularly interesting for development.

Vertice Nord is characterized by a high accessibility and infrastructure as well as for greater extension and building capacity expected. It represents the new northern gate to Torino, as the junction point between intercity motorway system and urban road system. This area will have the role of new retail center on the northern portion of the city, with more traditional oɝ ce and residential functions. The localization of leisure activities depends to the principle of specifi city enhancement and maximization of existing resources not only in order of the high degree of accessibility.

The Regio parco area is characterized by huge available fl oor area, mainly residential, connecting with traditional support functions to housing, as the business activities of small and medium size. The Alberata project involves the redevelopment of this area into an urban boulevard: the physics caesura dictated by the road wants to be transformed into an opportunity for mending two portions of the city, mainly through interventions related to the strengthening of urban facilities like parks and public infrastructures.

PROJECT INFO

The transformation area called Scalo Vallino (Vallino Rail Yard) is located near the City center, along the Torino-Genova railway line. In the past such area has been used as a goods yard by Porta Nuova railway station; in recent decades it is used as storage for goods thanks to the existing warehouses. Four buildings of historical/environmental value are located on via Nizza side. It is planned to refurbish the entire area providing it through residential, commercial and service activities, including the ones for the future Biotechnology Research Hub.

The renovation of the former FIAT Avio manifacturing plant involves over 315,000 sqm. The Masterplan foresees several projects and amongst them these are: the new Regione Piemonte Headquarters, 220 mt high, on underground courtyard with all the services related to the oɝ ces and a congress center. On the edge of the area was already been ealized the Oval used during the Olympics fort short track and now used for trade fair uses.

The area is part of the wider Corso Romania premises. It boasts high accessibility: it is situated at the junction of the A5 Torino-Aosta and A4 Torino- Milano motorways where they join the north ring road. The activation of the Metropolitan railway service makes Stura station an important interchange point in public mobility, supported by the extra-urban bus terminal, and gives the areas under transformation a new accessibility within the metropolitan area.

PROJECT INFO

The “Palazzo del Lavoro” has been designed for the International Exhibition of Italia ‘61 by Pier Luigi Nervi, Antonio Nervi, Mario Nervi and Gino Covre: it is an immense quadrangular space, with a structure consisting of sixteen pillars umbrella high more than 20 meters that support the roof and are surrounded by an envelope in curtain wall. The project involves the conversion of the building into a commercial and multifunctional space. Beneath the great pillars, the shopping arcades are connected together on di erent levels by internal routes.

The south-west quadrant of the Turin territory, is in a strategic and accessible position. The planned “piazza Mirafi ori” at the centre of gravity of the Torino Nuova Economia (TNE) areas will also be the location of the south terminus of the future Metro Line 2. Flanking the historic industrial site of FIAT Mirafi ori, TNE areas constitute of almost 300,000 sq.m. of disused industrial areas undergoing renewal. This area already hosts the Design degree courses of the Turin Polytechnic, and other innovation-oriented functions and services should soon be added.

The project aims at the recovery of brownfi elds and green areas of the Castle of Lucento. The task is to link these areas to the Carrara park along the Corso Regina Margherita, mending and repurposing the existing context, confi rming its technological and productive vocation and fi nally hosting new tertiary and commercial activities, in particular on the front of Corso Regina Margherita. The redevelopment of the industrial area will allow the release of vast portions of park areas to be allocated to supplement the existing long-end of the Dora Riparia river.
