The Mobile UX Business Case

InnovationMobility is no longer a buzzword. Organizations need to evolve in this new direction and provide mobile access to business applications. A

mobile strategy helps to drive future success.

Improve productivity

By making your business applications available via more devices anywhere and anytime, you will improve the data quality in your HR

IS and increase workforce efficiency

Increase employeesatisfaction

Employees appreciate the choice to use their own most cherished devices for productive work. This flexibility increases their

satisfaction and loyalty level.

Save costs

via BYOD

Enabling your employees to “bring their own device” requires your organizational IT infrastructure to be able to respond to this new

trend that will bring important savings

Reduce manualtransactions

By enabling employee and manager self-service via mobile devices, you will reduce the manual transactions for your HR administration

and optimize the delivery of strategic HR tasks

Evaluating Mobile Application Types

Use Cases Most Robust Apps – CRM Sales, DSD, EAM

Medium/Lightweight – Employee Productivity,

etc.

Lightweight/Content-Based – Portal, etc.

Development Effort

More Complexity Light to Moderate Complexity Basic Content

Cost of Development

High due to complexity and resources

Much less due to Web development resources

and UI Generation

Varies depending on how much mobile

optimisation is required

Cross-Platform Support

None – Device and OS-specific

Yes – Based on the supported containers

Yes – assuming correct browser versions

Robust Offline Capabilities

Yes – Full capabilities to store data in customised

way

Some – There are practical limitations to

discuss

Very Limited – need to use with HTML5 APIs for

offline support

Robust Device Capabilities

Yes – full capabilities of the device and OS

Some – Dependent on the container and the limitation of HTML5

Minimal – Some techniques to control

device

Usability/User Experience

Optimal – Can take advantage of full capabilities of OS

Significant – Leverages on Web technologies for

look and feel

Variable – Dependent on connection, network

speed, Web optimisation

• Build once/roll out to many (i.e., Works on a high percentage of mobile devices [Smartphones, Feature phones, and Tablets])

• Works on modern browsers (HTML5)• JavaScript skill set is easy to find• No additional hardware and middleware license

required (low TCO)• Tailor made

SAP Considerations

• Doesn’t work with all mobile devices (only iOS, Android, and RIM at this time)

• SAP Sybase and SAP NetWeaver Gateway (OData) installation and support skills required (new skill set)

• Licensing (Purchase the individual apps, buy hardware, configuration, customization, and maintenance cost)

• Need to build an app per device OS (native skill set is expensive)

Non-SAP – Mobile Solution Advantages

SAP vs. Non-SAP Mobile SolutionsSAP Advantages

Non-SAP – Mobile Solution Considerations

• Complete End-to-End Solution. Mobilise your entire enterprise: applications, business processes, device management/provisioning (Afaria), all within a single integrated infrastructure

• Availability of off-the-shelf apps (e.g., T&E, Manager Insight via iTunes store)

• Extra database for data synchronization, offline use

• Mobile Device management needs to be handled through third-party solution

• Enterprise Apps store required for URL communication (Optional)

• Limited data for offline usage

What We’ll Cover …

Page 25: Tools, tips, and techniques for mobilizing HR Applications

25

Lessons Learned

• A mobile application is not a Web application ported on a device• Technical architecture needs to be clearly defined

Short and long term• The client is king …• Customer buy-in is high• Wireframes are great accelerators and facilitators without having

to build the full solution• Use a mobile simulator when doing project demos so you’ll get an

accurate picture of the finished product• Never underestimate the Mobile device management• Start now with a straw man mobility strategy and iterate

Page 26: Tools, tips, and techniques for mobilizing HR Applications

26

Wireframing — Lessons Learned

• Collaboration tools for wireframing speed up iteration and avoid the dependency on one designer

• Low fidelity (few colors, simple font) focuses on the process• Use a tool where you can add notes and simulate navigation (via the use of hotspots, for

example)• Use reusable drawing elements for consistency• Use something that is easy to learn

Page 27: Tools, tips, and techniques for mobilizing HR Applications

27

Mobile Simulator

• Mobile simulators allow you to show progress of the mobile experience without having to pass devices around

• Use it in conjunction with Online Conference tools via desktop screen sharing

Page 28: Tools, tips, and techniques for mobilizing HR Applications

28

Mobility Pilot

• Pilot projects allow you to transition from the planning to the realization stage of your enterprise mobility strategy

• Quick, but small wins can build valuable experience and lessons learned on how mobility will work in your enterprise

• Validates return on investment (ROI) assumptions • Can provide for evaluation of technology prior to large

commitment in technology purchase • Mobility pilots give you a productive experience with a solution at

a fraction of the cost • There are different goals and objectives for a mobility pilot; it is

important to be clear on the objectives upfront • The mobility pilot will cost you money to perform, but usually a

small price compared to the information gained

Page 29: Tools, tips, and techniques for mobilizing HR Applications

Mobile Prototyping

Page 30: Tools, tips, and techniques for mobilizing HR Applications

30

Common Pitfalls

• Starting too big and never finishing• No project sponsor• Licensing jungle• No visual checkpoints along the way; having to rebuild during

User Acceptance Tests• The use of proprietary technologies that require skill sets that are

scarce to find in the market (cost, risk, dependency)• It looks very simple, but …• Not all teams involved from the start … including security

41

Mobility Comes with HR Challenges

• By 2014, there will be more mobile devices than PCs and laptops Organizations are giving sales people tablets as their only

device The use of desktop and laptops by specific roles will decrease

• Blending of work/personal life Mobile devices are accessible anywhere and anytime

The top places for checking work email are on vacation, in bed, or as a passenger in a car

• Bring your own device (BYOD) inevitable Get to your stuff from anywhere on any device 40% of devices used to access business applications are

personally owned by employees

Page 42: Tools, tips, and techniques for mobilizing HR Applications

42

Mobility Comes with HR Challenges (cont.)

• Millennials will make up 45% of workforce in 2020 Texting, social media, phone, and Internet usage, combined

with modern Web and mobile technologies, has expanded user expectations and abilities and empowered users to act on their own

• Technology is readily available to everyone Employees can often figure out how to bring it in whether or not

IT approves (e.g., Dropbox, LinkedIn, Google Docs, Google Hangout, Skype)

Page 43: Tools, tips, and techniques for mobilizing HR Applications

Where to Find More Information

Page 44: Tools, tips, and techniques for mobilizing HR Applications

44

7 Key Points to Take Home

• Think Mobile first! Mobility allows the capturing of data that could not be captured

in the past• Start now with a straw man mobility strategy and iterate

Success of rapid deployment is dependent on small bite-sizes that your organization can digest

• Planning is the not just the first step, but the only way to ensure success Develop use cases (personas)

Know the customer — understand user personas to drive effective engagement with stakeholders

Determine your deployment approach — on what device, pilot or not, etc.

Engage your end users

Page 45: Tools, tips, and techniques for mobilizing HR Applications

45

7 Key Points to Take Home (cont.)

• Experience counts and cannot be substituted New technology needs correct skills Standard apps are developed for a standard back-end system

• Include your security team early into the project to ensure the architecture addresses your security posture

• Avoid native development environments if multiple devices are supported

• Mobile policy training should be standard for new users and can best be provided as multimedia that can be streamed to the user’s device
