when you try to put that piece into place you find its not quite the right fit and have to search some more for the right one. Some puzzles take what seems like a lifetime to build, when building a cowherd, it actually does!

2013 marks our 50th year in the Registered Angus business. Like the puzzle, we have been building our herd piece by piece into what you have before you today. Selecting cow families that meet all of our expectations, sires that will add the appropriate traits that we desire and in the end to have everything gel together to put forward the ideal product that we feel we have for sale today.

The Wilbar cowherd has been passed down through 3 generations. Survived many years of trends and fads, times when Angus cattle were discounted at auction markets instead of selling for the premiums they are today. The cattle business changes on a regular basis but our commitment to you remains the same – to breed cattle that will survive in the harshest environments and produce profitable offspring year after year.

As a special addition to our sale, this year we will be offering 20 open heifers from the top of our replacement pen. They are out of proven cow families that will compliment any breeding program.

Thank you to all of our customers/friends that we have met over the last 50 years, we are very humbled by your belief in our product. The people met and the friendships made, make this arguably one of the best industries to be involved in.

The sale will again be conducted by video auction. We encourage you to view the bulls, heifers and/or the cowherd prior to the sale. Wilbar Farms ... a half century of building and breeding a superior product for the livestock industry.

What can a man say about the breeders who bred “HF Kodiak”...a bull that changed the landscape of the Angus breed? Much ... but I will try to be brief.

The Wilbar operation is based on the dedication and accomplishment of three generations. I’m certain that Jake would not have foreseen, that at the time he met Bernice at a skating rink (while schooling at the Canadian Bible College in Regina), that he would turn from minister to cowboy and that the couple would establish one of Canada’s finest Angus breeding operations.

In 1954, the Willms family got their first taste of the Angus cow. Hereford was the breed of choice at the time ... the young couple wanted to purchase a package of heifers ... but as their budget was very limited, they had to settle for a group of black cows. The next spring they purchased the Reserve Champion Bull at the Battlefords Bull Sale for $510.00 from Robert Staples. For the next seven years, they ran a straight commercial black herd and although the breed was not popular at the time, Jake got to like the black cattle. In an interview for Angus Advantage, Jake recalled, “We appreciated the simplicity of the breed, the function, fertility and calving ease of the Angus cow and we stayed with them.” In 1962, they purchased their first registered cows and the rest is history.

As the two boys (Jud and Dan) grew, so did the cow herd and land base. Both Jud and Dan graduated from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Regina, served time with the force, but both chose to return to agriculture. The children’s experience through 4-H was a big help in promoting and marketing the Wilbar program; a practise exercised by each generation. For over a decade, their large consignment of bulls at the Regina Bull Sale was a feature. Then in 1996, Wilbar joined forces with Bob and Marjorie Blacklock and established the “Tools of the Trade Bull Sale,” which was held annually in Saskatoon. A few years ago, with M Double B” changing their calving cycle, Wilbar moved the sale out to the ranch; with the next generation taking charge ... Bryan and Tom.

The accomplishments of family members and the Wilbar herd would take this entire catalogue to document. Even though each generation has sat in an Association president’s chair, it is only fitting to mention that the founders of this great breeding establishment, Jake and Bernice, were truly dedicated Angus enthusiasts volunteering much of what spare time they could afford. Jake served as president provincially and nationally, while Bernice served as the Saskatchewan Angus Association secretary for a decade, in addition to a host of committees on which they served. In 1992, Jake and Bernice received the Saskatchewan Livestock Association Honor Scroll; then in 2006, they were presented the ``Heritage Award`` and in that same year, Wilbar Farms was named ``Purebred Breeder of the Year.”

The success of Wilbar did not happen overnight. The bulls and females offered for your inspection are a result of five decades of genetic engineering, by three family generations. The powerful offering of bulls did not come by chance, but rather the result of having an outstanding, predictable cow herd. Over the years, I have found that the Willms family is not afraid of hard work in order to achieve success ... you will find this work ethic in the cattle they sell ... working hard for your success. Honesty, sincerity and customer service are foremost in the Wilbar program.

The future bodes well for agriculture, especially in the livestock sector. The next decade will be bullish as North America re-stocks its waning inventories; while Eastern European and Asian countries seek more product.

Red Ter-Ron Reload 703T – Reload continues to write his own story in the Wilbar herd. His sons have highlighted and topped our red bull sale for the last 3 years and will be in the spotlight again this year. Not very often does an April bull make the cut for our sale due to age but this powerful individual couldn’t be left out. He is a spitting image of his sire, long bodied, wide topped, big scrotal and an impressive weaning index of 130. His dam is a massive bodied Tornado daughter with a perfect udder indexing 106 on her first 5 calves. We recently sold a flush on her to Ben Fraser, Australia. Sons have sold to Trent Hammond, SK and Red Eagle Angus, SK. Sleeper of the sale.

Ken & Odile Aiken are third generation ranchers. The centennial farm currently has 350 females with heifers calving in March and cows calving in April-May. We have a commercial herd, primarily Red Angus and Red Angus/Simmental; from which, we retain our ranch-raised heifers as replacements.

We are an active 4-H family and along with our 4 children, Dallis, Rylee, Ryan and Delayne, we have purchased females for 4-H prospects and bulls from the Wilbar farm. The females have great calving ease and are very good mothers. The bulls we got were also very impressive. They have good hind quarters and width as well as lots of depth and thickness. Best of all, they are easy to work with. These qualities are an asset when choosing 4-H steers and females.

The maternal granddam 216M traces back to Red MS Trophy DDH 4A who we exhibited as the 1992 Reserve Grand Champion Female at Agribition and in turn produced the $15,000 Red Wilbar Gold Rush 4C that was exported to Austria. Wilbar Trophy 807Z is a very correct, deep bodied female that will continue the Trophy cow family legacy as very productive, useful females.

Red Wilbar Ruby 810Z is a very long bodied, brood cow prospect that will have a lot of fans come sale day. Last fall this heifer made us question ourselves as to why we decided to only show bulls at Farm Fair and Agribition. She could be a very competitive show heifer. Red Wilbar Elsa 876Z is the deepest red heifer in the offering. She has incredible volume and natural thickness. The Tradition females have beautiful udders that will last forever. Combine this with Brylor New Trend 22D on the dam’s side, you know you’ve got heavy production for years. A maternal sister by Reload was our feature heifer at our Sure Bet Female sale a couple of years back selling to Billy Powell, KS.

Here is a cool looking show/brood cow prospect. She has loads of body, shape and style that will get you into the winners circle. Wilbar Princess 5Z will be the first Premium Product female to sell in Canada this spring. Her dam is a moderate, easy fleshing Duff Encore 702 daughter.

Wilbar Mayflower 7Z follows the same pattern of all the Premium Product females we have. They look to be the kind we like, feminine yet broody enough to hold condition in harsh environments and raise herd bulls that our customers appreciate. Her dam is a nice uddered Titleist daughter.

She may be our youngest female in our red offering but quite likely the most interesting. Red Wilbar Lana 878Z is attractive patterned, wedge shaped and out of a direct daughter of the legendary black bull, Leachman Right Time. We have a full sister to Wilbar Pride 17Z that had her first calf at the beginning of February and she is one of the best uddered heifers we’ve calved this spring. The Pride cow family would have to be one of our older ones in the herd and for good reason, they have incredible longevity and work. The dam, 407K is a tank of a High Time daughter that brings in a big calf every fall.

The Lucy cow family has been with the Wilbar herd for all 50 years that we’ve been in the business. They make excellent mother cows, are always favorites to those who have toured our cowherd and stand the test of time with longevity to make you money for generations. Wilbar Lucy 25Z will carry this tradition on in her new owners herd.

This is one powerful female. Wilbar Georgina 57Z puts it all together in a very complete package. She has volume, mass and presence, true to the type of cattle her sire Wilbar Titleist 600T has been producing. One of our favorites in the offering. This heifer was almost our consignment to the Touch of Class sale last fall but at the time we decided instead to hold her back to highlight this sale. Ultra stylish, feminine and angular, she could compete at a show or two. Just like the Capacity bulls in the sale, 103Z offers calving ease and easy fleshing ability. Her dam has a weaning index of 109 on 5 calves. She has maternal brothers at longtime bull buyers Bill Seib, SK and PFRA, SK.

Here is only the second daughter of DMM Trade Secret 36X ever offered for sale. The first one highlighted the Touch of Class sale last fall selling to Breed Creek for $4400. This one is no different than the rest we have retained in our herd. Lots of body and hair. The bulls look like bulls and the females will be powerful cows just like Trade Secrets dam. The dam of Wilbar Erica 118Z is a full sib to the maternal granddam of HF Smokin’ Aces 105Y, the current Agribition Reserve Grand Champion Bull for Hamilton Farms and BAR-E-L Angus.
