Tony Abbott on 2GB - 20 March Fordham: I note since we’ve been on air this afternoon a report into allegations of abuse against asylum seekers, and this is the moss review I believe… Abbott: (makes strange little sound…) Fordham: on Nauru has called for improvements to the way claims are investigated. So this report, the Moss Review wants improvements in the way claims of abuse at Nauru are investigated. Are you going to improve the way those claims are investigated? Abbott: look ah you won’t be surprised Ben that I haven’t caught up with the details of that. I know that ah Immigration Minister Peter Dutton has got it in hand. But ah I certainly would ah strongly defend our policies when it comes to border protection. Ah I’d strongly defend the policy of ah processing boat people who come illegally to our shores ah ah in ah third countries and, um, the Nauru ah centre will continue for as long as it’s needed ah as will the Manus one. Fordham: you’d want to do all of those things but if the Moss review is telling you, and I don’t know whether this is a review that you called for, or whether it’s an independent review or how that works, but if the moss review is saying look, on top of all those other things that you want to achieve, you also need to improve the way these claims are investigated, does that sound like something you would be happy to do? Abbott: aaahh Fordham: or do you think those investigations, the level of those investigations are fine just the way they are and there is no room for improvement. Abbott: well Ben I I I never, I never, say that there’s nothing that can’t go wrong and that there’s nothing that couldn’t be improved ah, of course ah you can always improve all sorts of things, but the policy of ah offshore processing of people who come illegally to this country by boat is right, it really is right, and I would certainly say that the vast majority of people, the vast majority of the time are being ah well treated, ah well looked after, um. Occasionally I dare say ah, things happen, because in any institution ah you get ah things that occasionally aren’t perfect, but ah, but look um, the most compassionate thing we can do is stop

And those centres on Nauru and Manus are an important part of that.
