“The short story is that the bike started out as a broken down 1971 cb350that the old owner had run into a tree or something, so after stripping the

bike down to nothing, we started from scratch”.

“I used old school techniques to build everything, all the aluminum workwas done by hand, and each exhaust tube was bent from a single piece,

using an old steamfitters technique”. -Sean

This bike is an example of the kind ofcustom work Roc-City really strivesfor, a very minimal look with a highlydeveloped form. I spent most of thedesign time considering how tocombine the necessary parts of themotorcycle to simplify the overallappearance, and still achieve a uniqueand eye catching result. Not much onthis bike is left over from the originaldonor bike, it’s actually easier to namethe parts that stock, such as theengine, frame and wheels. The allaluminum bodywork is handmade forthis individual bike, no templates orforms were ever made in producing theparts, and there were actually nodrawings made before beginning thework.

When I began stripping the bike down,I really had no plan for the outcome,but let a mental picture begin to formin my mind as I created each part. Asthe bike grew nearer to a finishedpiece, the design decisions becamemore critical, as new parts not only hadto function themselves, but also had towork well with the look of the rest ofthe bike. Equally challenging waskeeping the bike comfortable and safeto ride, features like the rear brakecable conversion and increasedswingarm angle do a lot to improve theold bike’s handling and stability. I’veseen many custom bikes which paylittle if any heed to the actual purposeof the motorcycle, there are probablyhundreds of these barely rideablemotorcycles filling gallery space andliving rooms in the trendiest of circles.I however, feel that a bike is only acomplete piece when it is ridden.

The proof is in the pudding, I wasriding behind the new owner of thisbike as we approached 100mph, thebike handled and sounded great, Icouldn’t have been more pleased.

I see this bike as a step in a direction ofdesign that I have begun pursuing, adeparture from the aesthetic of the caferacer, which, as a form necessitatesfunctionality and speed, all else beingsecondary. The development of thechopper also appears to have deadended, having been careened into aheap of gaudy detail pieces and utterlack of composition and flow.

From somewhere in this mix, I hope tosee a form of custom bike comeforward that combines rideability withexcellence in design, form and functionbeing complimentary rather than incontest. I imagine this form will drawheavily on vintage style, as I am myselfattracted to designs from the past. Ihave already begun work on the nextproject, and look forward to finding outwhere this path will lead.

Shawn Barber's body of work focuses primarily on painting, portraiture, anddocumenting contemporary tattoo culture. Barberʼ s intimate renditions oftattooed individuals balance both meticulous brush strokes and loose energy.Figurative in nature, these large paintings take on abstractions withexplosive colors, meandering lines and paint dripping down the canvas.

Barber earned his B.F.A from Ringling College of Art in 1999 and has paintingsheld in private collections throughout the United States, Canada, Asia, Europeand Australia. His paintings have been exhibited in diverse solo and groupvenues including: Joshua Liner Gallery, NYC, NY; Billy Shire Fine Arts, LosAngeles, CA; The Shooting Gallery, San Francisco, CA; Mesa Contemporary ArtsCenter, Mesa, AZ; University of Houston, Houston, TX. His first published book ofart titled 'Tattooed Portraits' was published by 9mm Books in March of 2006,followed by his second tome, 'Forever and Ever', a 256 page hardcover bookdedicated to the Tattooed Portraits Series. Among his extensive achievements, hehas taught drawing, painting and the business of art for 10 years at variousart schools throughout the country. After years of documenting the art oftattoo, it was a logical progression to pick up the tattoo machine and addtattooist to his resume. When he is not traveling or painting, he can be foundworking at Memoir Tattoo in Los Angeles, CA.

75Benjie’s Café Racer, (BCR), founded by

Benjie Flipprboi, is a one of a kind bike

builder. He creates vintage café racers

out of old Japanese and British bikes

without copying any other builders. For

every single bike, the gas tank, seat,

bars, and most of the remaining parts of

the bike are all hand fabricated.

Nothing is bought except the original

bike itself, and then it is spruced up with

Benjie’s own hand- fabricated parts. BCR

is a unique custom builder that creates

genuine and stylish vintage café racers

like no other builders.

Throughout the years, Flipprboi’s main

focus was not centered on

motorcycles but more on a general

interest in design arts, which he studied

in college. However, simply studying the

art did not satisfy his hunger for

knowledge, therefore he turned to his

first great fascination of cars and

started his own projects. He always

favored the European styling, such as

the body lines of European cars, so for his

first project he worked on a

Volkswagen Beetle. It took awhile to

perfect its restoration and customizing,

but in the end the car turned out

beautiful. Upon finishing the VW Beetle,

Benjie was inspired to restore and

customize other cars, envisioning

different

designs that have never been seen before.

For his second project, he

bought and customized a Porsche, which

he still owns to this day. All these

new designs kept evolving within the

designer’s mind; then before he knew

it, Benjie Flipprboi became a master

mechanic for car dealers such as

Porsche, Mercedes, Toyota, and Honda, to

name a few. The innovative

mechanic designed his own style for each

car, creating absolutely unique

vehicles.

Abrió los ojos.Pero el sueño se empeñaba en dictarle lo contrario. Y así, durante un período detiempo casi infinito, acabó por despertar.La habitación era espaciosa, pero no la reconocía. Si percibía, en cambio, unmurmullo de voces al otro lado de la puerta, así como el ronco funcionamiento de unaparato a su izquierda. Supo que se trataba de un hospital.No intentó mover su cuerpo, pues no sentía la necesidad. Ni siquiera podía recordarqué le había sucedido. Se contentó con observar el día a través de la ventana.Fuera, el viento agitaba las copas de los árboles cercanos y una leve llovizna lodisfrazaba todo de gris. Una inmensa melancolía le atravesó el alma y de nuevo cerrólos ojos.

Y así regresó, una vez más, a su gran sueño blanco, atravesando un universo sin color,sin dolor, y viéndose a sí mismo liberado de cualquier carga. Volvía a casa una vezmás, con la despreocupación que supone la felicidad, pero esta vez intuyó que no eraexactamente un sueño. Vio el blanco y supo que era real. Comenzaba a recordar.

- “ … Three, two, one… GO!!!

Su cuerpo en tensión, sus piernas y brazos preparados para el reto, el viejo monoceñido a un pecho que no consigue contener un corazón desbocado. Son los últimossegundos antes de soltar una maldición y enroscar el puño del gas como si le fuera lavida en ello.Recordaba el momento. Lo iba a recordar el resto de su vida.El blanco era la sal.Y entonces supo lo que había hecho.Ahora todo cobraba sentido.- “ … Three, two, one… GO!!!

Reconoció esa vieja Triumph, remendada, transformada hasta la obsesión, dura y lealcompañera a lo largo de tantos años, respirando afanosa en el lago salado.Dispuesta a darlo todo una vez más. Ella nunca le había traicionado.Ahora podía recordar, y sonrió.

PARTE UNO.El despertar.

Las continuas ráfagas de viento hacían presagiar una fuerte tormenta. La luz del día sedespidió en un santiamén y el color del cielo representó una majestuosa paleta deazules intensos tornándose en negro.Comenzó a llover.Dentro, en el taller de comprobación, donde se decidía quién corre y quién no, elestruendo ocasionado por el motor cesó de inmediato, y el silencio se hizo aún mástenso. El viejo se irguió con la dificultad propia de sus años y se rascó la frente,atónito.

- No había visto una cosa igual en mi vida. Colocar turbinas en cada uno de los doscilindros, con sus válvulas de descarga y conseguir esa puesta a punto. ¿Crees queaguantará?

La pregunta, por obvia, no dejó de sorprender a Eric. Esperaba que ese viejo, apodadoSpeed, le censurara el invento. La experiencia de éste en carreras de sal eralegendaria, y algunos de sus antiguos récords de velocidad aún se resistían. Cuando lellamó para echar un vistazo a su motor, alertado por la organización, pensó que nosería admitido, pues él era todo lo que necesitaba el jurado para otorgar los permisosde salida a pilotos y máquinas.

- No lo sé. He reforzado todo el sistema de lubricación, y también válvulas, pistones,cigüeñal, bielas. Debería aguantar. Pero nunca se ha probado en aceleración pura másde diez segundos.

- ¿Y el chasis?- Es de fabricación casera. Ligero, pero muy resistente.- Parece un buen trabajo. Ese cableado… esas soldaduras… me recuerdan a un viejomecánico... umm, ¿este motor inglés, este chasis… los has modificado sólo tú?- Allen, el preparador se llamaba Frank Allen. Yo he continuado con su trabajo.

PARTE DOS.El encuentro.

El viejo Speed sospechó algo al ver la moto de Eric, pero no evitó una punzada en suinterior al escuchar el nombre.- Vaya, Frank Allen. ¡Cuánto tiempo!Lo dijo en voz baja, casi sin darse cuenta. Y así, hablando consigo mismo, el viejo fueacariciando tubos, soldaduras y cables con evidente respeto, hasta recorrer todo elconjunto.- Frank desarrolló aquella Vincent…como ha hecho con esta, pero poco despuésdesapareció. Lo hizo tras ese desgraciado accidente y nunca le volví a ver. ¿Sabesdónde se encuentra?- Nos dejó hace un par de años.Eric percibió el dolor en sus ojos, ese dolor para el que no hay remedio, dolor deviejo, del que acompaña hasta la muerte. Y fue cuando de verdad se miraron el uno alotro. Y así hasta que el viejo Speed, tembloroso, abrió la boca en un supremo esfuerzoy habló.

- Frank era mi hermano.Pasó una eternidad hasta que habló de nuevo, con voz rota.- Entonces, tú debes ser…- Eric Allen, señor.El viejo lo escrutó, con calma. Luego, con movimientos calculados, fue bajando lentay cuidadosamente la máquina que reposaba en lo alto del elevador. La observódetenidamente una vez más, masculló algo para sí y se dio la media vuelta,lentamente. Y ya no rompió su silencio.Un trueno hizo estremecer el corazón de Eric.La tormenta se había desatado con violencia.

Hubo un tiempo para construir, también hubo un tiempo para aprender, para sentirmiedo, para huir. Pero ahora ese tiempo ha pasado. Ahora es tiempo de correr. Dedemostrar hasta dónde llega la voluntad y el deseo que nos lleva más lejos, másdeprisa, sin otra razón que superarnos.

- “ … Three, two, one… GO!!!

La salida fue espontánea, como si un resorte hubiera lanzado hombre y máquina, y lasvelocidades entraban sin pensar, aumentando el ritmo con verdadero frenesí.Los escapes dejaban tras de sí un haz de fuego y luz, como un cometa, mientras elproyectil en que se había convertido hombre y motocicleta se alejaba del mundo,como una bola inflamada. El sonido bronco, ensordecedor, lo envolvió todo a su paso.Los brazos cumplían la misión encomendada a pesar de la cada vez mayor resistencia.Eric puso toda su alma en estos primeros metros.Nunca había corrido así.¡Gas, gas!Una extraña sensación, mezcla de euforia y momentánea locura, le empujaba a seguirmás y más.Su cuerpo se acurrucaba sobre el depósito de gasolina en una posición increíble. Suspiernas casi colgaban hacia atrás, mientras pugnaban por fundirse al cuerpo de lamontura, su rostro reflejaba toda una concentración de rabia y sufrimiento.¡Volaba sobre la pista!El motor aullaba en su esfuerzo y el hombre dominaba a la bestia.Sintió una energía tremenda que estallaba en su puño derecho. En todo su interior. Ycómo ésta fluía a través de su cuerpo y desembocaba en cada elemento mecánico enmovimiento, imprimiendo una furia desconocida en el viejo corazón inglés,sometiéndolo a su voluntad.Y fue en ese preciso instante cuando sonrió.Y entonces, y sólo entonces, entendió lo que el viejo Frank le explicaba cuando Ericera un niño.Dejó de escuchar el aire, el sonido del motor. Todo esfuerzo, dolor y tensión fueronremitiendo hasta desaparecer.Lo que escuchaba era tan sólo su propia respiración dentro del casco.Todo cuanto le rodeaba desapareció para dar paso a la quietud más extraordinaria quenunca antes hubiera vivido. Se notó ingrávido, pues flotaba y se supo desnudo.Y de esta manera fue hombre y fue sal, fue máquina y fue aire.

Fue paz.

Y cerró los ojos,con el alma bien abierta,cerró los ojos,y de nuevo sonrió.
