It gives us great pleasure to present yet anothercollection of case studies showcasing how thepartnership between government, through Seda, andour country’s budding SMMEs is continuing to makegainsinthiscrucialsectorofoureconomy.

Thisbookletrepresentsonlyasampleofthethousandsof SMMEs Seda has worked with over the 2010/2011financialtohelpthemgrowandbesustainable.Whatmakesusparticularlyproudisthat,duringtheyearofjobcreation,onaverage,27%ofSedaassistedclientsindicatedanincreaseinnumberofpeopleemployed.

When one considers that the South African economyhaslostjobsduringthefourquartersofthe2010/2011financialyearandthatSeda’stargetclientsduringthis

periodweremostlysurvivalistandmicroenterprises,who are not seen as employment creators, we aregreatly encouraged. We have implemented manyprogrammes to improve the capacity of our businessadvisorsthatourvaluedSMMEsinteractwithonadailybasisandwebelievethishasbeenofgreatbenefittotheseentrepreneurs.

Wealsobelievethattheoperatingmodelweintroducedduring this period, called the client journey model,tomonitor client’s businesses at each stage of theirdevelopment – fromdetermining the feasibilityof anidea,developingabusinesscaseanddeterminingwhatinterventionsarerequiredtotakethebusinesstothedesiredstage-sothatourinterventionsaredeliveredwithinanintegratedapproachandareabletohelptheclient growwith his/her business, has had a positiveimpact on the way we assist our clients grow andsustaintheirsmallenterprises.

Withemploymentcreationasapriority,wewillcontinueto focus on clients in growth sectors, large scaleprojectsandthemoreestablishedsmallenterprisestofurtherenhancetheiremploymentcreation.

Fuelling growth and employment

MeetNtsikeleloEricMgqibelo,ownerofAnaxfleetmanagement and fuel supply solutions, who nowservicesthecompanythatusedtoemployhim.

When Ntsikelelo identified an opportunity toprovideafleetmanagementservicetohisformeremployer,heapproachedSedatohelphimdraftasolidproposaltosecurethecontract.Astheysay,therestishistory.Seda also helped Anax to expand into the fuelsupplybusiness.

InadditionwehelpedthemwriteawinningtenderproposaltosupplyfuelandlubricantsintheEasternCape to a leading oil company. We also assistedthemtoimplementtheISO9001.From humble beginnings, the enterprise todayboasts millions of rand in turnover and employs32 local people. Whatever comes next for thistrailblazing enterprise, Seda will be there tosupportit!

She needed clients to know her courses wereaccreditedandprovidedvalueformoneyaswell.

With Seda’s help, Four Stars Communication isnow an Information Systems, Electronics andCommunicationsTechnologiesSectorEducationandTrainingAuthority(ISETTSETA)accreditedtraininginstitution.Demandforitsserviceshasmorethandoubled, proving once more that Seda’s formulaworks!

MaletswaiWaste&RecyclingCo-operative

Turning Waste into Work

TheMaletswaiareanearAliwalNorthintheEasternCape is a poor region with few job prospects.Seventeen unemployed residents of Maletswaidecidedthatrecyclingwastecouldhelpthemputfoodonthetable –andtheMaletswaiWasteandRecyclingCo-operativewasborn.Withnobusinessskills and no capital, their prospects might haveseemedbleak.ButthatwasbeforetheyaskedSedaforhelp.

We developed a business plan for the co-op,referredthemtofundinginstitutions–andfinancialassistance started pouring in: R500 000 from theDepartmentofSocialDevelopment,morethanR1,7millionfromtheNationalDevelopmentAgency,andR1,8millionfromBuyisa-e-Bag.AfinalinjectionofR4.8millionhasbeenapprovedbytheDepartmentofEconomicDevelopmentandEnvironmentalAffairs(DEDEA).

These funds have been used to secure land andequipment,withthesupportofboththelocalanddistrictMunicipalities.Buyisa-e-BagisalsoplanningBuy-BackCentresatMaletswaiandfoursurroundingtownships.

Withtheinfrastructurelargelyinplace,Sedaturneditsattentiontoprovidingbusinessskills,trainingtheMaletswaiCo-opmembersinFinancialManagement,Co-OperativeGovernance,Co-OperativePrinciples,ConflictManagement,andHealthandSafety.Asaresultoftheseinterventions,all17co-opmembersareemployed.Theprojectisfullyoperationalandis separating out metal cans, cardboard, plastic,paper and glass for sale to customers.When theBuy-Back Centres become operational, anothereightjobswillbecreated.Itallgoestoshowthat,withtherightsupport,communitiescando it forthemselves.

SithembeneWomenCo-operative

Power Dressing Women’s Empowerment

When Nelson Mandela popularised his trademarkAfrican shirts, the former President also openeddoors for manufacturers of traditional clothing.One such company is the Sithembene WomenCooperative situated at Mthatha in the EasternCape.This collective of eight determinedwomenstartedoutsewingweddinggowns.Astheirbrandgrew, demand followed. This meant they couldexpandtheir lineandofferavarietyofproducts,including sophisticatedAfricangarments forhigh-profilecustomers.

Readytotaketheirfledglingenterprisetothenextlevel,SithembeneapproachedSeda.OurfirststepwastoregisterthecooperativewithCompaniesandIntellectualPropertyCommission(CIPC).Toexpandthebusiness,weprovidedmarketingmaterials

and helped the cooperative to draft a businessplan.ThisresultedinSithembenereceivingaR4.7milliongrantfromtheThinaSinakoLocalEconomicDevelopment programme. The funds have beenusedtobuildafactory,creating115newjobs.

Sedaputicingonthecakebysponsoringlearningexpeditions and exhibitions in Canada andTaiwan for Sithembene representatives tomarketthemselvesinternationally.“Thesetripsintroducedus to cooperatives in other countries,” explainsVuyokazi Bodlani, Chairperson of the SithembeneWomenCooperative.“IwishSedacouldknowthedifferencetheyaremaking inpeople’s lives,”sheadded.

Safety in Numbers

The loss of a large customer can be devastatingfor any small enterprise. This is what confrontedKroon Occupational Health Services (KOHS) whenitslargestclient,adiamondmineintheKroonstadarea of the Free State Province, closed down.Facedwiththesuddenlossof95%oftheirincome,founderFires JansenvanVuurenhad to findnewclients–andquicklytoo.

Withoutarecognisedbrandandwithnomarketingtools at his disposal, van Vuuren turned to Sedaforhelp.WerespondedbydevelopinganewlogoandbrandidentityforKOHS,apolishedcorporateprofileandwebsite,vehicleandbuildingsignage,a

PowerPointpresentation,businesscardsandothermarketingtools.

Notonlyhavetheysurvivedtheloss,thebusinesshas grown and opened a new office in Welkomandhasgrownfrom2to6moreemployees.“Thiswouldn’t have been possible without the high-qualitymarketingtoolsIreceivedfromSeda.Itissadthatmorecompaniesdon’tmakeuseofSeda’sservices,”concludesJansenvanVuuren.

PhatsimaGlass

Keeping the sparkle in Phatsima

Phatsima Glass, established by Mr. Moloi,manufacturesglassitemssuchastrophies,anddoessandblasting.Hewanted tomovehis enterprisefromsurvivalisttoathrivingenterprise,sparklingwithsuccess.HeapproachedSedaforhelp.

Seda helped with marketing materials and abusiness plan that could be submitted to the DeBeersZimeleHubforpossiblefinancing.Mr.MoloiwasawardedandsuccessfullycompletedatendertothevalueofR120000totrain80disabledandunemployedpeopleinglassrecycling.

The De Beers Zimele Hub approved R1m fundingwithaninitialdisbursementofR350000.

Before Seda became involved with the businessturnoverwasatanaverageof4%andnow ithasincreasedby583%.

Employmentwasat2permanentand1temporaryworker and now boasts 8 permanent and 1temporaryworker.WithplanstoappointagentsallovertheFreeStateemploymentwillbeincreasedbyanother30peopleinthenearfuture.

TswellangPeleBomme

Surviving the Drought

Tswellang Pele Bomme is a women-ownedagriculturalco-operativeintheJagersfonteinareaof the Free State. Although the women enjoyedsufficientrainfalltosustaintheircropsofpotherbs,spinach, collards, cabbage, potatoes, carrots,onions, beans, peas, tomatoes and peppers, theysufferedadroughtofadifferentkindwhen theirdonorfundingslowlydriedup.Hamperedbypoorfinancialrecord-keepingandnobusinessplan,theco-op’s prospects of securing alternative fundingwere slim. In turn, thismeant that they couldn’thireworkerstocultivatethevegetables,noraffordthetransporttotaketheirproducetomarket.

Seda prepared financial statements for the co-op, covering the previous two years, and thenincorporatedtheseintoaprofessionalbusinessplan

tohelpthemaccessfinance.Toensurethatrecord-keepingwouldbeuptoscratch fromnowon,wealso provided the co-op with computer literacytrainingandanaccountingsoftwareplatform.Thanks to these interventions, Tswellang PeleBomme was able to break the financial droughtand secure a R150 000 loan from the NationalDevelopmentAgency,whichhasbeenusedtobuyavehicle.Nowabletotransporttheirproduce,theco-opnegotiatedacontracttosupplySt.LawrencePrimarySchoolwithvegetables.Thisnewbusinesshas allowed them to create twenty seasonal jobsfor workers from the local community. VukaAcademyDrivingSchool

Turning the wheel of success

Vuka Academy trains disabled learners to drive,andalsooffersotherholisticcapacitybuilding,forexample, computer training. When the businesswas established, the owner approached Sedato help them access funding. A business planwas developed which assisted to secure an IDCloan of R3.5 million as startup capital. With thecapitalproblemresolvedandthenecessaryassetsacquired,adifferentkindofaproblemshoweditshead.

Thebusinessbattledtogetenoughworktoservicetheloan.TheIDCagreedtowaivepaymentontheloanfor12monthstogivethemachancetomarkettheir products and service to the public. Sedasteppedintohelpwithmarketingefforts,puttingupsignboardsonthebusinesspremisestoenhance

visibility,producingpromotionalmaterialformassmarketingaswellasdevelopingbusinesscardstohelpwiththoseimportantbusinesslinkages.SedahasalsoassistedthemtogetaccreditationthroughTransportSeta.

Vuka started receiving more business in Welkomandthesurroundingareas.Theirprofitsmorethandoubled,theyemployedsevennewstaffmembersandtheyarenowabletoservicetheloan.WelkomFET College has allowed them to market theirservices at the college and DPSA has offered itsdatabaseasamarketingtool.

BarhwebiInvestment(t/aPressedintime)startedoperating in 2008 with a mission of providingcustomerswithexceptionalandconvenientserviceforalltheirlaundryanddrycleaningneeds.Theypride themselves in a high level of customersatisfactionandpromiseto“makeyourlifeeasier”.

Likeanyotherbusinesstheyhadafewchallenges.TheLaundromatwaslocatedinashoppingcentreandwas not visible because the business ownershad never taken into consideration the issues ofputtingupsignagearoundthecentreandbrandingtheLaundromatitself.

ThemanagingmemberapproachedSedaandafterameetingwithaSedabusinessadvisoritwasresolvedthatSedawouldhelpwiththe installationoftwolightboxesthatwillserveasanadvertisementforthebusiness.

Theinterventionensuredthatthebusinessismorevisible.Asaresulttheyhavemanagedtoincreasetheir clientele. The business, which started withonly3employees,hasmanagedtocreate4extraemploymentopportunitiesandiscurrentlylookingatexpandingtheirpremises.

DaveytonWheelsServies

Taking the gap

Daveyton Wheels Services is the brain child ofJosiahMohlamonyane,whosawagapinthemarketwithintheDaveytonarea.Thecompanyspecialisesin re-manufacturing and fitting of brake linings,clutch plates, brake pads, skimming of drums,discs,pressureplates&flywheels.

However, Daveyton Wheels Services needed helpin ensuring quality and reliable service. JosiahapproachedSeda,whosecondedabusinessadvisorto conduct an analysis of the business. Sedarecommendedtheygetnewequipmentandhelpedfacilitate the application for funding throughthe Seda Technology Transfer Fund which wasapproved.

The result of this intervention saw the companyimproveinoverallefficiencyandquality.

Due to improved efficiencies and quality ofworkthe demand for their services increased. As aresult,theworkforcehasmorethandoubledfrom7beforetheinterventionto15employees.

Sedafurtherrecommendedtheygetnewequipmentand helped facilitate the application for fundingthroughtheSedaTechnologyTransferFundwhichwassuccessfullyapproved.

Giving a great idea a kick-start

Whenamangivesawomanarose,hesymboliseshisloveforherandherbeauty.Isn’titsuchapitythenwhentherosewiltsawayafterafewdays?

ThiswasprobablythesadfateoftherosebeforeMrViljoen–ownerofIlubaLongLifeFreshFlowers,steppedin.Hecreatedatechnologythatextendsthevaselifeofafreshlycutrosefromaboutsevendaystoatleastsixmonths,anduptotwoyears!WhenMrViljoenapproachedSeda,allhehadwasapatentedideaandhadnoresourcestorollitoutinabusinessmodel.Seda identified that there was definitely a needforMrViljoentore-engineerhisbusinessprocessesand get the appropriate machinery to improveproductivity.

Sedarealisedthispotential,helpedMrViljoenwiththenecessarypre-grantinterventionsandapprovedagrantofR500000forequipment.IlubaLongLifeFreshFlowersstartedoperationsin2009withsmallscaleproductionandmarkettesting.

Today the roses are sold in countries like Japan,France,Holland,Italy,theCaribbean,GermanyandSpain.Turnoversincethestartofthebusinesshasincreased by 600%! Employment in the businessincreasedfrom2to70,andthebusinesssupportsabout20otherSMMEswhoactasmiddlemen.Theworld isone stepcloser to realising the truemeaning of the assertion “Roses are Forever”,thankstoIlubaLongLifeFreshFlowers.

When Thokozani Hadebe and BonginhlahlaTshabalala decided to establish Uthukela MicroLending Services, their aim was to save theircommunity from unscrupulous loan sharks andempowerthemselvesintheprocess.

Theysoonrealisedthatiftheywantedthebusinesstogrow,theywouldneedhelp,sotheyapproachedSeda. We immediately identified the followingproblems:theyneededtoregisterthebusinesssothatitbecomesalegaltradingconcern–differentto the way loan sharks operate; they neededbusinessandfinancialmanagementtraininginordertomanage their business affairs properly for thegrowthofthebusiness;computerskillsand,lastly,theyneededtocreateabrandforthebusinessandmarket it aggressively because theywere a littleknowncompany.So,firstthingsfirstwesaid…Wehelpedthemregisterthebusinessasaclose

corporation with the Companies and IntellectualPropertyCommission(CIPC).Wealsohelpedthemregister as a credit provider with the NationalCredit Regulator (NCR) so that their business isaboveboard.Next, we facilitated business and financialmanagement training and then helped themwithpromotionalmaterialandsignage.Today, Uthukela (UMLS) has opened twelvesites at pension grants pay points (SASSA) withinthe Uthukela district offices. Their financialmanagement system is up to date, and a properdatabaseofclientshasbeenestablished.

With these above interventions the companyemployees increased from two to a staffcomplementofsevenincludingmanagingmembers.Thiscomprisesofafulltimeadministratorandsixconsultants.Thecompanycurrentmonthlyturnoverhasincreasedbyanaverageof75%.

Eveninremoteruralareas,SouthAfricanconsumersare very brand-conscious as Annalise da Gama,owner of Andrewsha Enterprise, discoveredwhenshe tried to market her Mzanzi brand of achaarproductsthroughoutLimpopoprovince.Consumersdidn’tknowthebrandandwerescepticalaboutitssafety and quality. In despair, Annalise turned toSedaforanswers.

A Seda Business Advisor suggested a range ofmeasures to help build the Mzanzi brand. First,wesubmitted theachaar for testing to theSouthAfricanBureauofStandards,whichconfirmedthattheproductissafeandnutritional.

Seda then provided basic business training andHACCP training to ensure compliance with foodsafetystandards.Finally, Seda assisted Annalise with marketingmaterialtobuildbrandrecognition.

Today, Mzanzi achaar is stocked by at least fourmajor retailers in Limpopo, along with severalnon-franchisedretailers.Eightnewjobshavebeencreatedandthecompanyhasgrownitsturnoverbyawhopping1400%.

Nkomanota Organic Farmers AgriculturalCooperative,registeredin2005,isaninitiativeof16farmersinthegreaterTzaneenLocalMunicipality.Itcontrols1221hectaresofAgriculturalLand.

Nkomanotahasbeenmentoredinorganicfarmingmethods by PUM Netherlands Senior Experts aswellasBCSOKO-GARANTIEGMBH,whoalsohelpedNkomanotapassinspectionsfororganiccertificationin2008and2010,whichenabledthemtoobtainastandinggrowers’agreementwithWoolworths.

IntermsofSeda’sassistance,thishasinvolvedtheformationofastakeholderforumtoconstructa

Packhouseforallstrugglingcommercialfarmersinthearea,fundingfordevelopingabusinessplan,co-operative training, quality management systems,design and development of marketing tools suchaswebsites and assistancewith the Co-operativeIncentivesScheme.

SedahasalsofacilitatedagrantbyLIBSAtopurchaseacompostplantandprovidedextrafundingtothecooperativetoacquireIrrigationDripPipes,sharedamongst member farmers. The cooperative hasmanaged to create 60 employment opportunitiesforthesurroundingcommunities.

The RooiwalCo-operative, which began in 1999 with 17members,wasnoexception.Theirinitialfocuswasknitting,buttheventurenevertookoff.Thegroupturned their attention to Broiler Production eventhoughtheyhad littleknowledgeabout itaswellaslackofbusinessskills.Seda helped with a structured mentorshipprogrammewhichcoveredallareasofthebusinesssuchasbroilerproduction,bookkeepingand

recording,sellingandpricingaswellasmarketingandmanagement.

TheDepartmentofHealthfundedtheerectionofsixboilerhousesthatgotthebusinessunderway.

With Seda’s help, Rooiwal Co-operative reducedthemortalityofthebirdsfrom10%toanaverageof3.5%,whichistheindustrynorm.Turnoverhasincreasedby23%andprofitabilityby17%.

Sasekani Cooperative, established in 2004, sellseggs. They approached Seda to help them growtheirbusiness.

Havingdevelopedabusinessplan,thecooperativewassuccessfulingettingaloanofR1.7millionfromOldMutualfora12000capacitylayerhouse,stockforthelayersandchicks.TheNationalDevelopmentAgency injectedanadditionalR1.7millionforthepurchaseofadeliverytruck,anextra7000layersandtopaysalariesof18workersforayear.

The remainder of the money was used to buildcapacity in areas such as financial management,project management and the purchase of officeequipment.

InsimuYamiAgriculturalCo-operative is thebrainchildofsixyoungpeoplefromSchagen,Mbombelamunicipality.TheCooperativeproducesmacadamianuts,aseasonalproductharvestedfromMarchtoSeptember.

When Insimu Yamiwas offered an opportunity topurchasea65hectorfarm,theyknewthattheyhadtoapproachSedaforhelp.Sedaofferedthemco-operativepre-incorporationtrainingandfacilitatedtheir registration as a co-operative with CIPC.Furthermore, we facilitated small business start-up training and helped them develop a bankablebusiness plan. This led to ABSA bank approvinga loan of R2.65 million for the purchase of thefarm. Since they needed the money quickly, theDepartmentofLandAffairs,throughtheLandBank,

approvedaR2.8milliongranttoexpeditetheABSAloan.

Seda further helped produce marketing andpromotional material to market the business,facilitated a grant through the Co-operativeIncentiveSchemeunderthe dtiandprovidedthemwith amentorwho provides guidance on generalbusinessmanagementskills.InpartnershipwiththeMpumalangaAgriSkillsDevelopmentandTraining,wealsoassignedanaccreditedserviceprovidertohelpontechnicalissuesrelatingtofarming.

InsimuYamihascreated13sustainableemploymentopportunitiesontopofthe6originalmembersoftheCooperative.

WhenMarkstan,agarmentmanufacturingcompanyin Kimberley closed its doors, the staffmembersdecided to form Future Creations Cooperativeto keep the business going. Seda saw this as anopportunity to help the 27 members create asustainablebusiness.

Co-operation was the name of the game. Viapartnerships with the Provincial Department ofEconomicDevelopment (DEDT)andTourism,Sedahelped the cooperative to source grant fundingfrom the National Development Agency and tosource machinery through the Sol Plaatje LocalMunicipality and the dti via their cooperativeincentiveSchemeprogramme.

DEDT further supplied funding to enroll theCooperativeinagarmentmanufacturingprogrammewiththeurbanFETCollegeinKimberleyandpaidtheleaseagreementonthepremisesforoneyear.Sedaprovidedmarketingmaterial,implementedamentorshipprogrammetoimproveinternalcontrolsystemsandpoliciesandhelpedwithlegaladviceon corporate governance and rules governingcooperatives.Wefurtherassistedwithproductionand quality management, to improve on theCooperative’soutputability.Awebsiteisalsobeingdesignedtomarketthebusinessinternationally.

Although NM Restoration is not aware of anycompetitor businesses in the area, they stillstruggled to make their business visible tocustomers.

With the help of a Seda business advisor, EatSmartOrganicsmotivatedandappliedforfundingthroughSeda’sTechnologyTransferFundandweredelighted when funding to themaximum amountofR600000wasapproved.Thecompanyusedthemonies received from theTTF topurchase aGasFlushingandMAPSealingTechnology.

WealsoassistedwithHRpoliciesandprocedures,

financial planning and marketing material,including signage.The owners wanted to increasetheir productivity and staff loyalty. They wantedto improve their internal marketing in order togettheirstafftobuy-inandtakeownership.Theywantedtocreateawarenessandimprovevisibilityof companyvaluesandpolicies.With the signagetheywantedtoincreasethevisibilityoftheplantand to aid visitors with the ease of finding theirpremises.

“This funding has enabled us to improve ourproduction capacity, efficiency and the shelf lifeofourproducts,”beamsJulietteduPreez.“Wearenowsupplyingourproduceinmajorretailoutlets.Ourturnoverhasincreasedby105%,”saysJulietteduPreez.

Combating crime and creating jobs

We all know about manholes that stand openbecause their cast iron covers have been stolen.NationalManholeCovers,foundedbyFaroukShaikatKraaifonteinintheWesternCape,cameupwithabrilliantsolution.Theydevelopedalightweight,strong polymer concrete alternative which canwithstandpressureinexcessofthirteentons.Butatfirst,itwasn’taneasysell.Firstly,theyneededSABS-approval, and secondly they needed themarkettoknowaboutthem.

In stepped Seda. We assisted National ManholeCovers to attain the SABS Mark certification fortheirproducts.Aspartofthisprocess,thecompanyhasalsoattainedISO9000certificationand

implemented ISO quality management principlesthroughoutitsoperation.Sedathenaddedaninteractivewebsiteandbusinessstartedtopourin,evenfrombeyondSouthAfrica’sborders.

Sincetheseinterventions,NationalManholeCovershasincreaseditsturnoverby50%andcreatedtennew jobs, bringing its total staff complement to30.“Seda isoneof thevery fewfriendsof smallbusinessinSouthAfrica,”saysFaroukShaik.“Theyare people-focused and are always efficient, ontimeandaccurate.Ibelievewehavethepotentialtogrowto100employees.Andwhenwedo,wewillhaveSedatothankforit.”

ShahiedIsmail,ownerofOubaaiCarWashinEden,Western Cape, probably made the best decisionabouthisenterprisebeforeitevenexisted.ThatwasthedecisiontoconsultSedaforadviceongettinghisducksinarowbeforetakingtheplungeintoestablishingtheenterprise.

A critical planning exercise was conducted withhimtoassesstheviabilityandsustainabilityoftheenvisagedventure;hewasassistedtounderstand

the financial management issues of a business,costingofservicesandmarketingofthebusiness.

TheCarWashwaslaunchedinNovember2010andwithin sixmonthsofoperation theywereable toopenanotherbranch,employing5peopleinbothoperations.Eachbranchservices8to10carsperdayandatthelastcounttheirloyalcustomerbasestoodat120!Doingyourduediligencetrulypaysoff.

A sure-fire success

MarkAckersandYusufAlie,specialistsinthefieldsoffirefighting,healthandsafety,firstaid,forkliftdriving, rigging and slinging, established a nichecompany called SAFMA. They could fight fires,but they needed help with marketing. They alsowanted toenter theSedaandENABLIS-sponsoredNationalBusinessPlanCompetition.

Wehelpedthemwiththedevelopmentofsignagetodirecttheirclientstowheretheyaresituated.We also assisted them with the development ofabusinessplan that theyused toenter the Sedaand ENABLIS-sponsored National Business PlanCompetition.TheywonthefirstprizeintheGreenSector category and were eligible for receivingone year mentorship from Young ProfessionalOrganisations.

We helped them with their branding and with abusinessplantheycouldenterforthecompetition,whichtheywon,earningthemsomeprizemoney!Furthermore,theyarenoweligibletobeassistedbyamentorfromYoungProfessionalsOrganisation.

International consulting group Accenture recentlycommissioned a film which featured SAFMA toshowcasegrowingenterprisesfromthedevelopingcountrieswhosecontributionstotheprosperityoftheir respective countries were worthwhile. Thisfilmhasbeencirculatedworldwidetoincreasethebusinessopportunitiesforthesechosenbusinessinterms of establishing international trade linkageswithotherbusinesses.

Raising Awareness of Animal Welfare

Even charitable organisations like animal welfarecentreshavetoworkaccordingtosoundbusinessprinciples. Just ask Len and Mandy Freeman,co-owners of the Tenikwa Wildlife AwarenessCentre which focuses on the rehabilitation andconservation of African wild cats from its basenear Plettenberg Bay in the Western Cape. As aprivate company, Tenikwa relies on the incomefrom visitors to sustain its operations. When theFreemansapproachedSedatohelpgrowthecentreandmakeitsustainable,werespondedwithaseriesofinterventions.

Afteranassessmentofthebusiness,Sedaerectedsignage on the N2 between Port Elizabeth andPlettenbergBay,toraiseawarenessofTenikwaandincreasetradefrompassingmotorists.

Thenwedesignedandsuppliedarangeofmarketingmaterialwhichisdistributedtotourismoutletsinthesurroundingareas.Toroundoffthemarketingintervention,welaunchedane-marketinginitiativewhich included thedevelopmentof awebsite forTenikwa,togivethemanessentialonlinepresence.

Seda also looked beyond its borders to sourceassistance. We introduced the Freemans to theNetherlands-based PUM Project, which offersspecialisedadvisoryservicestoprivatecompaniesin developing countries. With the help of Seda,Tenikwa Wildlife Centre has become a thrivingenterprise which couples its focus on wildlifeconservationwithsustainablebusinessprinciples.
