Together. New Chapters and Rewarding Challenges.
Together. Let’s impact the future.
Josiah and Courtney Manteufel were excited to start a new chapter in their lives afer Josiah was honorably discharged from the United States
Marine Corps in 2014. Josiah enrolled in Western’s welding program afer completing Western’s two-year HVAC program, while Courtney completed the Physical Terapy Assistant program.
Unfortunately, Josiah sufered from a severe back injury; Courtney had sustained a debilitating hip injury, which led to overwhelming medical bills. Even with VA benefts, they were struggling to fnd a way to continue their education while keeping up with the expenses. Due to the generosity of Western donors, the couple received scholarships and were then able to focus on school. Josiah and Courtney, afer much efort, successfully graduated in April.
Dr. Roger Stanford ofcially became the college’s seventh president on July 1, 2017. During the selection announcement, District Board Chairperson Dennis Treu said, “Roger’s passion for education, student success,
the technical college mission, and ultimately, for Western, really came through in his interviews. He has a deep respect for the work that has gone into our Vision 2020 strategic plan and brings inspiring ideas for how to keep the college moving in that direction.”
“Te ability to aford college is one of the largest barriers to student success. When graduates share how their lives were changed because of scholarships or emergency funding, it has a profound impact on me. I encourage others to join me in making a contribution to the Western Foundation. If everyone gave just $10, imagine how many lives we could change!” Roger Stanford
“Tank you so much for your generous donation, which is helping me continue my education. Ever since my honorable discharge from the United States Marine Corps, funds have been tight. Transition from military to civilian life has been challenging at times. However, attending school at Western Technical College has allowed me to follow a career path in welding. Learning to weld has always been a dream of mine. Tis scholarship helps me to focus on graduating and begining my welding career. I thank you for this scholarship. I hope to someday pass along your generosity to someone else in need.”

The President’s Scholarships are awarded to three outstanding Western students. These students must have at least a 3.5 GPA and made significant contributions to Western and their community.
Maria’s Story A student in the Paralegal program, Maria has managed to be very successful in her studies while being a member of the Multicultural Club and Phi Teta Kappa Honor Society.
In addition to being an active full-time student, she cares for her grandfather and her two-year-old son.
Afer graduating, she wants to continue her education at a four-year institution in political science, and eventually attend graduate school to become an attorney.
One of her counselors said, “When we frst met, she was insecure and did not feel like college was something she could tackle. She has come a long way in overcoming her insecurities and is realizing her true potential.”
Another instructor stated, “She is a very hard-working and goal-oriented student with a work ethic that is not common amongst her peers. She has what it takes to do great in this feld.”
the Health Information Technology program and a member of the Health Information Technology and Medical Coding Specialist Club. She has overcome serious medical issues to follow her dreams in the health and medical feld.
“At the age of 21, I woke up one morning to discover I had partial paralysis and the slurred speech of a two-year-old. I had sufered a stroke. Tests revealed that I had a congenital hole in my heart and was told by my doctor that if this hole had been undetected and unrepaired, my estimated life expectancy would be 35 years of age. Tree months later I underwent open heart surgery. During my recovery, I walked with a cane for a time and went through a course of physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy.
My early health issues sparked an interest in the medical feld. I dreamed of enrolling in the Physical Terapy Assistant program. Despite my mountain of medical debt, my husband and I knew education was necessary, so we put my husband through school in 2005.
Upon completion, he took a job that required him to travel. I became the primary caretaker of our three children and had to rethink my

career choice. Returning to school at this point would be difcult. I discovered Western Technical College ofers a variety of fexible
programs combined with fexible scheduling. I am excited to be fnishing my second semester in the Health Information Technology program.
I’d like to thank the people who donate to scholarships. Our 19-year-old son is also a student at Western Technical College in the Diesel and Heavy Equipment Technician program. My family is involved with PAX (Program of Academic Exchange), a nonproft student exchange program. Since 2013, we have hosted four bright, young, intelligent students from across the globe. We believe in investing in the education and future of others. Tis scholarship will help provide for my family while I continue my education. I will give back by continuing to host and invest in the education of others as a way to pay it forward.”
