Ayon kay Bautista, angpanukalang ordinansa does notappear to be a rational way ofidentifying riders with criminal

intent... A criminal would neverwear a vest r egistered under hisname in committing a crime but

will resort to using a replica ora stolen vest, prejudicing thesafety and security of the right-ful owners.

I have decided, based onthe recommendation of the citylegal office, to veto this particu-lar ordinance. But we are giving

the city council and all otherstakeholders one month tocome up with a comprehensivemotorcycle-riding ordinance in

    Local actors hail

    Robin Williams

Too bad someone like Robin, who gave us laughter when weneeded it most, could not laughaway his depression. If only hehad seen himself through theeyes of his adoring fans, he

would have stayed on.Thank you for the gift of

laughter, Mr. Williams.Heres my little tribute to the

man who gave us the best in allhis movies. Sad to think that hedid not live up to his famousmovie line in Dead Poets Society,Carpe diem!

May his death remind usthat, even on days when life isno laughing matter, we mustnot allow our demons to havethe last laugh.

    InMrs. Doubtfire, Robin

Williams showed that he was aconsummate performer. As anactor, he had no boundaries. AsPeter Pan in Hook, I saw thelittle boys struggle in Robinsportrayal when he came back tohis senses as Peter. I am sad-dened by his suicide. He

    seemed like a very intelligentperson.

John EstradaIt was a shock to wake up to

the news of Robin Williamsdeath, and the reported causemade me even sadder. He was agenius at his craft. His suicideonly goes to show that peoplecan hide sorrow behind a happyexterior. I really wish someonehad been there for him whocould have made him change

his mind about ending his life.

Losing him makes Hollywood alittle darker.

John ArcillaI love all of Robin Williams

worst thing in life is ending upwith people who make you feelall alone.

Super GM So: Rare case of brain drain in sportsBy Ted Reynoso

THE flight of Filipino laboroverseas is now usually just tak-en for granted where in the 80sand the 90s it was a national is-sue. With the ever-increasingnumber of potential workersand employees which the localindustries cannot accommodate, overseas employment is the on-ly practical resort.

But way back in the 60s andthe 70s, the main concern wasthe flight of highly educatedand technically skilled Filipinos

to work and even live abroadwhich was then commonly re-ferred to as brain drain. Itceased to be a national issue

with the decline in Philippineeducation and the preponder-ance with developing skilled la-bor.

I never imagined that a rarecase of drain drain will occurthis time in sports with the de-cision of our lone certified legit-imate Super Grand Master Wes-

ley So to resign from the Na-

tional Chess Federation of thePhilippines (NCFP) and to join

the USA chess federation which, for one, effectively denies thecountry of his service for inter-national competitions.

His absence also leaves ahuge hole in the Philippinechess which will surely be feltin our forthcoming campaignsin world-level competitions.

So said his motivation forleaving the Philippine chess fed-eration is to attain his dream ofbeing one of the ten highest rat-ed chess players in the world,

something he claimed wouldnot be possible given the sup-port and the international expo-sure he was getting under theNCFP.

So figured that his chancesto attain his dream will be bet-ter if he latches on a strongerchess federation as that of theUSA.

He could be right. We cannotfault him.

    Whats intriguing in this hap-

penstance is that, in contrast, in

certain Philippine sports eventsparticularly basketball, football,

volleyball, tennis, swimmingand track and field, there is agrowing trend of Fil-Foreignersand actually even foreigners

volunteering and offering theirservices if not for the nationalflag at least for local competi-tions to increase the level ofplay and our competitiveness.

We have seen the likes of AsiTaulava, Eric Menk and CJGiles, Marcus Douthit and nowBlantche in basketball. Our PH

    Azkals is virtually 90 percent

Fil-Fors. Huey Treatt is reinforc-ing us in tennis. Our collegiateand commercial volleyballleagues are littered with Thais. There have been feelers comingfrom abroad in swimming andtarck and field it has been re-ported.

The issue of fee and re-munerations is be-side the pointhere.

    For

    sure we

are not wanting in talent andskills in boxing and combat

sports, bowling and bil-liards/pool.We are not wanting

in brawn power. But that cant be

    definitely said for

events as chess where brainpower is premium.

Sos defection to the USA istherefore a sad episode notjust for Philippine chess

    but PH Sports as awhole.

Jeron Teng takes commandMORE than just his scoring explosion, Jeron Tengs game smarts also camein full view in the blockbuster battle that had La Salle exacting revenge onfierce foe Ateneo on Sunday in the UAAP mens basketball tournament. Tenggot off to a blistering start in a 32-point performance spiked with six reboundsand five assists, but La Salle coach Juno Sauler said his star player also de-serves credit for his team play. [Ateneos] defense started to adjust on Jeronin the second half and he made very good reads; he involved his team-mates, said Sauler. The reason the other guys were scoring was not be-cause of the openings they got, but because of Jeron recognizing the de-fense. The Green Archers zoomed to early double-digit leads before fendingoff the Blue Eagles late rally in an 88-86 win, where Teng also outshone Ate-neo ace and season MVP rival Kiefer Ravena. While stretching their winningstreak to six games, the defending champions also avenged their first-roundloss to the Eagles, 86-97. But more importantly, the Archers tied the Eagles

and the Far Eastern U Tamaraws for top spot at 6-2.Jasmine Payo
