the heart.The highlight ofthe film is a smallscene about riddlesbetween Bilbo andGollum (actors Free-

man and Serkis dowonders to their char-acters, even after

weve seen the olderBilbo and Gollum in

LOTR.) Even while awar is raging some-where above them,the fate of Middle-earth is decided in achildish game.

Overall, UnexpectedJourney is a lengthyreintroduction to Mid-dle-earth, the point of

which is to do justthatreintroduce. Itsa welcome return, butI need not be remind-

ed that the Orcist isthe Goblin-cleavingElvish sword fromGondolin three timesover.
