TODAY’S fixtures
THERE’S another packed fixture list across the Wessex League this week-end but that could be severely cut back thanks to the weather.
Hopefully a period of dry, bright weather has remained in place since the heavy downpours of yesterday to give pitches the chance to dry out a bit.
League leaders Whitchurch have a home game against Brockenhurst, a side who need a win to close the gap on the top five clubs again.
Moneyfields travel to Alresford Town and Newport IOW cross the Solent to take on Folland Sports. Blackfield and Langley have an away day at Horndean.
Game of the day in Division 1 sees Cowes Sports take on Tadley Calleva – the only two sides in the Wessex League still unbeaten this season.
Elsewhere, the lunchtime game on Sky Sports is the battle of the dockyards when Pompey travel to Plymouth Argyle.

REMEMBERING Darren
THE ANNUAL period of Remembrance will forever take on extra significance for Petersfield Town FC following the death of a former player in Afghanistan five years ago.
Warrant Officer Darren Chant was killed on November 3, 2009, along with four other British soldiers after being shot by an Afghan gunman who he had been-mentoring for police work.
WO1 Chant was the most senior of the five who were caught in the ambush as they rested in a compound close to the town of Nad E’Ali in Helmand Province, Afghanistan.
Around 700 mourners attended his funeral, including the Duke of Edinburgh.
Sean Bate, best man at Darren’s wed-ding, summed up the popularity of his friend in his address at the funeral.
He said: “The size of the turnout is testament to the character of the man that we lay to rest and he will live on in our hearts forever.”
Darren played for the Rams between 1997 and 2005 and he was a popular figure around the club.
In 2010, a special memorial to Darren was unveiled in the Love Lane clubhouse by his son Connor.
The memorial is a framed shirt with Darren’s name and old number on it and it can be found on the wall to the right of the entrance to the boardroom.
This afternoon before the start of the game, a minute’s silence to remember Darren, as well as all other Petersfield
residents who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country, will be held.
After the game, all of those in the clubhouse will
be offered a glass of port and a toast
will be made in
hon-our of
Darren and all of
Peters-field’s
fallen he-roes.

GOOD afternoon to everyone attending today’s match at Love Lane, including the players, officials and sup-porters from Totton and Eling and the match officials.
The start of November is a significant time every year for Petersfield Town Football Club.
In our home match closest to Remembrance Sun-day we hold a ceremony or special event every year to remember our fallen hero Darren Chant.
Darren made the ultimate sacrifice for his country in Afghanistan five years ago when he was killed while serving in the conflict.
There is a constant reminder of him at our football club with the framed shirt on display in our clubhouse throughout the year.
However, every November the Rams family comes together to remember Darren – his friends and family, his former colleagues and team mates, and the current band of players, officials and supporters at Love Lane.
We hope that the events we have planned before and after today’s match prove to be a fitting tribute to his memory and all of Petersfield’s other fallen heroes from the First World War, Second World War, Falk-lands War and Afghanistan.
I am personally proud and pleased to have helped organise the events which mark the period of Remem-brance for our football club.
Thinking about Darren and the town’s other fallen heroes really does put into perspective the passions we have for our football club. Winning, drawing and losing means very little in comparison to the service people like Darren gave for club and country.
We salute those heroes today and we will keep their memories alive in our hearts and minds.

MANAGER’S notes
I WOULD like to welcome Totton and Eling to Love Lane this afternoon for this Premier Division encounter.
Although they are struggling at the bottom of the table and have had a tough start to the season, Totton have shown improvement in their last few games as they have a more settled side.
We certainly won’t be under estimating them this afternoon and we know we have another tough 90 min-utes ahead of us, which we need to approach in the right manner if we are to pick up another three points.
If you are reading this then hopefully that means our game has beaten the weather.
Pitches have changed in the last week or two, going from more solid sur-faces to being very soft in a short period.
All we can hope to do is keep playing as often as
possible and keep putting points on the board at this stage of the season.
Today’s game also brings our annual Remembrance event where we honour Darren Chant and all of Petersfield’s other fallen heroes.
Remembrance weekend puts every-thing into perspective for me. As a
serviceman I fully endorse paying respects to former Petersfield player Darren.
He, like myself, was a war-rant officer but our love for football was/is also unrivalled.
It will be good to see a few of Darren’s former teammates here today and I look forward to raising a glass in honour of Darren after the game.
I hope you find our Re-membrance events today
are a fitting way to mark the memory of
Darren and you will join us in remembering him and all of our town’s fallen heroes this after-noon.
All the best.

RESERVES player stats
TODAY is our annual Remembrance home game, in which we will look to honour former Petersfield Town player and British Army Warrant Officer Darren Chant.
Below is the programme of events which will take place before and after today’s match.
At around 2.55pm, the players will come out on to the pitch for their usual Respect line up. The number nine shirt (the number shirt worn by Darren) will be carried to the centre spot, and it is hoped we will be able to retire the use of the number nine shirt for this game only.
The players and officials will then line
up around the centre circle for a minute’s silence following a short tribute an-nouncement on the tannoy system.
After the match, a glass of port will be handed to each person in the clubhouse. Paul Molloy will then lead everyone in a toast to the memory of Darren.
The silver Darren Chant tankard will then be presented to the Petersfield player voted as man of the match.
All former team mates, friends and family are invited to join us at Love Lane today, in order to pay our respects to not only Darren but all of the servicemen and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.
Programme of events in place for our Remembrance match
WITH so many connections to the Ser-vices, Remembrance Sunday is an im-portant date in Petersfield Town Football Club’s annual calendar.
The football club was represented at Petersfield’s Remembrance Sunday service by our manager Ian Saunders, who laid a wreath on the club’s behalf at the town’s war memorial – paying our re-spects to all of Petersfield’s fallen heroes as well as current service personnel who are in our thoughts and prayers as they serve their country around the world, especially those who have a current link with the Rams or used to play for the club. As the picture (above) shows, Paul Molloy also laid a wreath at the town’s war memorial.
The club is only too pleased that it has been able to take part in Petersfield’s Re-
membrance Sunday service and it shows the club’s close links with the community it represents.
There was a huge attendance for the service in Petersfield last Sunday with thousands of people turning out to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

RESERVE rams TODAY’S visitors
TOTTON and Eling was formed in 1925 as Bramtoco FC and was made up of workers from British American Tobacco.
The name was changed to BAT Sports FC in 1971, the year the club entered the Hampshire League.
They progressed through the divisions of the Hampshire League, winning Divi-sion 3 in 1975, before becoming champi-ons of the top division in both 1988 and 1989.
In May 2006, BAT (the company) sold Southern Gardens to Linden Homes and after much deliberation the club ended up losing their first team and continued with the reserve team playing in Wessex Divi-sion 2 for the start of 2006-07 season.
At the start of the 2007-08 season due to league restructuring, Totton were promoted to Wessex Division 1, when the club decided to resurrect the reserve team.
It was at this point that officials also changed the club name to Totton and El-ing, changing club colours from blue and yellow to red and black.
The club was given the nickname of ‘The Millers’ and they were no longer as-sociated with BAT (the company).
Totton started off well, until the Christ-mas of 2007 when they hit a slump.
They welcomed Pip Gates on board as chairman and Kevin Dawtry joined Andy Tipp as manager, with Chris Tona as assistant.
Things turned around quite quickly, and a great surge after Christmas saw the club finish fifth in the league.
The 2008-09 season was one of great optimism with a new purpose built ground on the horizon.
Totton stormed to the league title at a
canter, ending up with 100 points, win-ning three club of the month awards, and promotion to the Premier Division.
In the first season back in the Wessex League’s top flight, Totton and Eling fin-ished in the top seven and won the Rus-sell Cotes Cup against Southern League opposition away from home.
They moved to their new home at Mill-ers Park in 2009-10. The season started well but the club took a while to get used to their new home.
As the season progressed they found that opponents enjoyed playing at Millers Park as well, so the season stuttered to a close where they finished mid-table.
For the 2010-11 campaign they man-aged to hold on to the first team coaching staff of Kevin Dawtry and Chris Tona, and finished in 18th place in the table.
Also the time was right to bring Simon Edwicker’s very successful youth squad to Millers Park to be the under-16 team.
In 2011-12 the club finished in 11th place in the Wessex Premier Division, 12th in 2012-13 and 18th in 2013-14.
The club can boast plenty of honours from its past.
Totton were Hampshire Intermediate Cup Saturdays winners in 1938, Hamp-shire Intermediate Cup Sundays winners in 1989 and they also won the Russell Cotes Cup in 1990.
They won the Wessex League Com-bination Cup in 1991 and 1996 and were runners-up in 2005.
They won the Southampton Senior Cup in 1976 and 1989, and were runners-up in 1980, 1991, 1993 and 1996.
They won the Southampton Premier League in 1971 and the Southampton Senior League in 1936.

Petersfield Town 2Hamworthy United 2
PETERSFIELD Town came from behind twice to ensure they had a share of the spoils in this Wessex Premier Division encounter.
The Rams went behind from the first attack of the game in the fifth minute when a free kick from the left was floated in towards the near post and Kane Daysh got in front of his marker to head home.
Petersfield then dominated by creating a string of good chances. Hamworthy failed to clear the ball when Warren Hunt headed on a cross but when Jack James latched on to a loose ball his shot rolled wide of the target.
A cross from the right eventually found its way to Brad Miles but he couldn’t steer his header on target. Another cross from the right was cleared to Joe Richardson on the edge of the penalty area but his first time volley was straight at keeper Gerard Benfield.
Petersfield almost gifted the visitors another goal on 22 minutes when they lost the ball as they tried to play their way out of defence. They had keeper Matt Shortt to thank for their lucky escape after he made a good low save to keep out Ben Osborne’s shot.
However, two minutes later and the Rams were level thanks to a helping hand from Hamworthy. A quick short cor-ner on the left was passed to Sean Wain and his inswinging cross was powered into his own net by Daysh.
Two minutes after that Daysh made up for his error by restoring Hamworthy’s lead and completing a bizarre hat-trick of two goals in the right end and one in his own net.
A free kick from the right was cleared at the near post by Petersfield but the second ball into the box caught the de-fence napping and Daysh had the time to shoot low into the bottom corner.
The visitors almost made it 3-1 mo-ments before half time when a cross from the right was hooked towards goal by Hamworthy’s Brad Miles but his effort dropped just wide of the post.
Hunt went close to equalising in the opening moments of the first half when he headed a cross just wide but he did get the equaliser on 64 minutes.
The Rams had been pressing the Hamworthy defence for a number of minutes and after working the ball from left to right, a cross from the right found Hunt completely unmarked in the box and although Benfield got a hand to his header he could only help it on its way into the net.
Hunt had the ball in the net again a minute later but he was judged to have been offside in the build up to the goal.
Phil Archbold nearly headed into his own net but Shortt just about managed to change direction to keep the ball out.
Both sides were trying to find an open-ing in the closing stages of the match and both went close to snatching a winner.
On 88 minutes, Hamworthy worked the ball up to the edge of the penalty area and Daysh’s first time shot from 20 yards out beat Shortt’s full stretch dive but dropped just wide of the post.
Petersfield’s final chance came two minutes into injury time when substitute Alex Lowley drove forward with the ball and his low shot took a big deflection off of Greg Horlock but dropped just wide of the post.
Petersfield come from behind twice in game to earn a point

RETRO rams
EVERY programme this season will fea-ture a story from the files of the Peters-field Post – Petersfield Town FC’s official media partner.
Today we go back 25 years to No-vember 15, 1989. The Post featured two reports on the Rams that week.
The first was about a 2-0 defeat at Chertsey Town. According to the Post they dominated the game and missed a penalty on their way to defeat.
What added to the disappointment was that Chertsey fielded eight new sign-ings after a change of manager.
It looked like the Post would have to report on two defeats that week when Harefield United led 2-0 at half time against the Rams.
However, Petersfield battled back dur-ing the second half to win the game 3-2.
They pulled their first goal back on 67 minutes when Norman Locke was sent tumbling inside the box.
Penalties were not Petersfield’s strong point that season as they had already missed three but John Oliver made no mistake with his spot kick.
The Rams created plenty of chances after that but they had to wait until the 86th minute until they drew level.
Oliver swung in a corner from the left and top scorer Paul Spinks, who had just returned from a three game suspen-sion, volleyed the ball into the net with an overhead kick.
The winner for Petersfield came a few minutes later when a long free kick from the left from Ricky Jones found Kieron Hoolihan at the back post, who pulled the ball back to Ernie Turrell for him to score.
Petersfield Town 4Paulsgrove B 1
PETERSFIELD breezed past Pauls-grove’s second string to book their place in the quarter finals of the Portsmouth Senior Cup.
The mix of first team squad play-ers and reserve team regulars were never overly troubled by their Hampshire Premier League opponents, who briefly threatened a comeback when they got themselves on the scoresheet.
The Rams were 2-0 up after only eight minutes, with the first goal coming in the opening minute.
A penalty was awarded for a trip just inside the penalty area and Will Essai (pictured right) made no mistake with his spot kick.
Essai doubled Petersfield’s lead when Steve Cammack got clear down the right hand side and his low cross was turned in at the far post.
Petersfield were dominating the game with constant crosses into the box and shots on goal and the visitors had to wait until the 35th minute before they created their first chance of the game.
A ball across the box found Brad Stokes but Luke Eaton made a sharp save to keep out his shot.
However, the visitors made it 2-1 two minutes later when Stokes raced clear of the Rams’ defence and struck a low shot under Eaton and into the net.
Petersfield restored their two goal ad-vantage on 61 minutes when the perfect through ball sent Cammack clear and he rolled his shot past Ben Little and into the net.
The visitors nearly got their second goal of the night in dramatic fashion.
Steve Ledger tried his luck from 40 yards out and his shot flew past Eaton but smashed against the crossbar and bounced to safety.
The final goal from Petersfield came nine minutes before the end when a second corner from the right found Ben Wason unmarked at the far post and his free header found the back of the net.
Petersfield book their place in next round of senior cup
