T oday we celebrate the Second Sunday of Advent. In the first reading from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah we are told that the way to the Lord will be cleared so that everyone will have access to the Lord of Justice. The

mountains will be leveled, the valleys filled in, and every obstacle will be removed. So how will this happen? John the Baptist gives us an answer in the Gospel. John tells us that we are to clear the way of the Lord. Our actions and words will remove the obstacles that prevent people from experiencing the Lord. As we begin this second week of Advent we ask God to help us to be a path for his light in the world. May our actions and words be an invitation to others to take a look at the Lord who is our light.

This week we celebrate the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. This feast honors our Blessed Mother who is conceived without original sin. The Church believes that from her conception Mary was prepared to be the Mother of God. The masses for this celebration will be Tuesday morning December 8th at 8:00 AM and Tuesday evening at 7:00PM. This year we also welcome Archbishop Cupich to Chicago Heights. The Archbishop will be celebrating mass with the Marian Catholic community on Tuesday morning. It is an honor to have our

Archbishop with us.

This week we continue our Advent evening prayer on Thursday evenings. The prayer begins at 7:00 PM. This prayer usually lasts about thirty minutes and includes readings, music, and time for reflection. In this busy Christmas season, take some quiet time to prepare for the coming of Christ.

This week on Thursday December 10th we will be celebrating the Sacrament of Reconciliation at St. Kieran. This celebration of the sacrament is for both St. Agnes and St. Kieran. During Lent the Reconciliation service will be at St. Agnes. So please join us as we celebrate God’s mercy and love.

As we celebrate this year of Mercy, I encourage you to continue to focus on the Corporal Works of Mercy. Through the Giving Tree and your donations to our food drives you continue to reach out to those in need. Thank you for your efforts.

Next Sunday we will have the collection for the Retired Religious Fund. This fund was set up to help religious men and women who have worked tirelessly for the church, but now struggle in retirement. Many religious communities do not have the resources for the number of retired in their ranks. Please join me next week in helping those who have helped us grow in our faith over the years.

Parish News & Events

Dear Friends, The second of our three parent resource meetings will take place on Wednesday, December 16, at 6:30 p.m. in the church. Deacon Emil Vasek will lead a discussion on Advent practices and traditions. At 7:00 p.m. the children will join us for Advent prayer. Afterwards, we will adjourn to Crawford Hall for hot chocolate and cookies. Please plan to participate in this event as one way to keep Advent.

Enjoy this week’s excerpt from “Everyday Wonders,” by Connie Clark, published by Twenty-Third Publications.

Have a peaceful Advent, Teri Klopp

AM I NOT HERE?

“Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened,

and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28

“It was time to find a priest for his dying uncle. But Juan Diego had already missed one meeting with the woman who said she was Mary. Stopping today to explain everything would only delay him. Distraught and heartbroken, he took another route. But Mary found him anyway. ‘Am I not here,’ she asked gently, ‘I who am your mother?’ You probably know the rest: Mary’s miraculous image appeared on Juan Diego’s tilma, and his uncle recovered completely. We all make crazy decisions that take us in wrong directions. But Mary, our mother, doesn’t forget us. She brings us back to her Son, who gives us rest.

Family Prayer

Parent: Lord God, bless our rest tonight. All: Good night, dear Jesus. Parent: Guard our sleep and keep us close to you. All: Good night, dear Jesus. Parent: Give us peace and strength to meet another day. All: Good night, dear Jesus. Amen.

Advent Action

Make plans to celebrate [next Saturday’s] feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe by finding a way your family can honor Mary. Place flowers near her statue, for instance, or have everyone draw pictures of our Blessed Mother.”
