1-558 Well, you know things are weird when we celebrate the As- cension on a Sunday! Our Diocese is one of the very few that normally celebrates the Ascension on Ascension Thursday (which is 40 days after the Resurrection) rather than today. However, because of the continuing quarantine, we have had the Solemnity moved to today—dont get used to it. Our readings tell the story of the Ascension. In the first read- ing from the Acts of the Apostles our author, Luke, recounts the significance of Jesuslife and mission, and then reminds us that Jesus promised that we would receive the Holy Spirit and be expected to continue the mission. When the story of Jesusascension is recounted, the Apostles are left looking up at the sky. Two angels basically say, Dont just stand there— get cracking! When something strange happens, we need a minute to process it. But, then we need to act. This quarantine has been very strange. Weve taken a minute—some of us many weeks—trying to figure out what just happened. But, for many of us—even those who continue to be out of work— this could be the time for us to not just stand there. This can be a time for us (especially as a parish) to figure out what completing the mission of Christ is going to start looking like in these days. It could be a time for us to reimagine what min- istry is going to be. Thats what the Apostles had to do when Jesus up and left (as it were). The Gospel picks up after the Resurrection when Jesus gath- ered the Apostles together for the first time and their response was, When they saw him, they worshiped, but they doubted. They went from walking alongside him, to watching him die, to seeing him alive again. It was a lot for them to absorb. But, Jesus doesnt leave things at that—he gives them instructions for the future. He gave them a minute (50 days) to think about it, and then sent the Spirit to get them moving. Maybe these readings come just now for us to remind us that even when things are weird and uncertain that we are still called to action. There are always ways that we can be fruitful and contribute to society. If you are healthy and able to do shopping, perhaps you can be part of the food security pro- gram. If you can drive and lift things, perhaps you can be part of the food delivery program for shut-ins. If you are compro- mised and really cant (and shouldnt) go out, perhaps you are being called to pray for the world, or to make phone calls to those who need comfort. If you are the head of a ministry, perhaps now is the time to resume your ministry by telecon- ferencing. Everyone has something to share. What action is God calling you to at this time? TODAY’S GOSPEL

Seventh Sunday of Easter

The Ascension of the Lord

May 24, 2020

The eleven disciples went to Galilee,

to the mountain to which Jesus had ordered them.

When they saw him, they worshiped, but they doubted.

Then Jesus approached and said to them,

“All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me.

Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations,

baptizing them in the name of the Father,

and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit,

teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.

And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.”

Matthew 28:16-20

Memorial Day Prayer

God of power and mercy,

you destroy war and put down earthly pride.

Banish violence from our midst

and wipe away our tears,

that we may all deserve to be called

your sons and daughters.

Keep in your mercy those men and women

who have died in the cause of freedom

and bring them safely

into your kingdom of justice and peace.

We ask this though Jesus Christ, Our Lord.

Amen

WORSHIP

The Tradition of Spiritual Communion has its roots

all the way back to St. Augustine. There have always

been periods throughout history when the reception of

the Holy Eucharist was not possible for the vast ma-

jority of the faithful. And there have always been

times in our personal lives when, either because of sin

or circumstances beyond our control, when we have

not been able to receive. Spiritual Communion is the

act of asking Christ to be close to us, and us to be

united with him in our hearts and in our spirits. This practice has become more front-and-center during the pandemic as

people who have become accustomed to receiving the Eucharist weekly, or even daily, have been separated from it.

However, the teaching that we should receive the Eucharist as often as possible is only a recent one. While Mass was an

obligation of the faithful for a very long time, it was not common that everyone would receive Eucharist at every Mass

until the Second Vatican Council. In fact, in medieval times, individuals would most often wait to receive their First

Holy Communion on their death bed hoping that it would make them more worthy of heaven as they approached their

judgement. They would attend Mass, but would pray for a spiritual communion rather than participating in the physical

communion. The food for the journey that Eucharist is for us is “real food”, but it is also the expression of God’s love

for and closeness with us which is always a free gift offered to us at all times. If you have been watching our live-

streamed Mass, you may have heard one of the staff reading the prayer for Spiritual Communion as the priests receive.

You are encouraged to pray it with us:

“My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to re-

ceive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my

heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated

from You. Amen.”

Do you wonder about anything in the Church or in our faith? Send your questions to Jen at [email protected]
