Kathrin and her MyTobii P10

My name is Kathrin Lemler. I’m 22 years oldand I have Cerebral Palsy. I’ve used manydifferent communication systems, startingwith low tech-systems like symbol or alphabetcharts that were followed by differentcomputers. For years I used three switches

tted in the headrest of my wheelchair andone knee-switch. After longer workingperiods I was exhausted. My neck ached andmy body was very tense.

In spring 2005 I got the chance to test severaldifferent eye control systems. MyTobii was theonly system that tolerated my head movementand worked from the rst moment on.

It was magic! My initial feeling was that Icouldn’t believe it! I was writing with my eyes!

It was an indescribable feeling. I sat in frontof the computer, looking at the screen. Letterafter letter appeared and words evolved.

From the moment I got a MyTobii mycommunication has run much more smoothly. It starts in the morning. I’m able to chat withmy cab driver who takes me to my university*.

We talk about mundane things like theweather. At university I can write long textswithout having sore muscles afterwards.Because of the speed I can participate inconversations with non-AAC users and keepup with my colleagues. At home I can useMyTobii for making telephone calls on myown. I can chat much more than I did beforeand even afford the luxury of being polite.

The only system thatwould tolerate myhead movement

It was magic! My initial feeling was that Icouldn’t believe it! I was writing with my eyes!

Since MyTobii is mounted on my wheelchairI can take it wherever I go. For instance, I cango into a bank myself and talk to the tellermyself. I don’t need an interpreter anymore.Because MyTobii is on my wheelchair, Ican use it at school. And at home I can useMyTobii during meals, too.

For me, communication is one of the mostimportant abilities in life. It is more thanexpressing your needs. Making contactwith others and talking to them makes you amember of society. MyTobii has become myvoice.
