ABOUT JABAL AKHDAR . OMANThe Al Hajar Mountains extend across 500 km in all, stretching from the Musandam Peninsula in the nor th to the fishing town of Sur at Oman’s most eastern point. The central section of the mountain range is the Jabal Akhdar, known as the “Green Mountain”, at 2,980 metres, it is the highest and wildest terrain in the countr y. The low coastal land nor th and east of the Jabal Akhdar is known as the Al Batinah Region (the belly), while the terrain inland of the mountains is Al Dakhliyah (the back), home of Alila Jabal Akhdar.

Here, you will be transpor ted to a place of solitude, nature in all its purity, fresh air and the most amazing views at every turn. Leave the hustle and bustle of the modern world far behind and immerse yourself in timelessness and the wonder of discovery as you encounter uninhabited villages, hidden caves, wadis (dr y waterways), nature trails, rose gardens and fruit plantations.

It is only in recent years that this area has been open to the public. Today, visitors are free to explore these spectacu-lar mountains, which are not only beautiful to behold, but are also an impor tant eco region, being the only habitat in eastern Arabia above 2,000 metres elevation. In August 2011, Jabal Akhdar was designated a nature reserve in a bid to conserve its unique yet fragile biodiversity. A decree issued by the Royal Cour t established the ‘Jabal Akhdar Sanctuar y for Natural Sceneries’.

LIFE ON THE MOUNTAINDue to its location and unique climate, Jabal Akhdar is fer tile ground for a diverse variety of fruits, including apricots, plums, figs, grapes, apples, pears and pomegranates, which are considered among the finest grown anywhere in the world. Other crops such as almonds and walnuts also grow here.

Plant life is rich on the mountains compared to most of Arabia, with vegetation changing with altitude. The mountains are covered with shrubland at lower elevations, transforming into rich woodland between 1,100 and 2,500 meters where trees such as the fig and wild olive thrive, before giving way to juniper trees at higher elevations. Fruit trees such as pomegranate and apricot are grown in the cooler valleys and in places where there are rocky outcrops with little vegetation.

This area is also famed for its roses, which colour the mountain slopes pink and fill the air with their fragrance when they bloom in abundance between April and May. The roses harvested each year are distilled to make Omani rose water, a staple in every Omani household.

As you follow trails through the rocky landscapes in and around nearby Saiq Plateau and A’roos Plateau, look out for indigenous bird and animal life , among them the Egyptian Vulture and Lappet-faced Vulture, the Mountain Gazelle and the Arabian Tahr, which is endemic to the Al Hajar region. Other endemic species include a number of geckos and lizards and a sub-species of Wadi Kharrar Rock Gecko found only in Oman.

The mountain is also dotted with many Omani villages. Villagers have dug terraces in some par ts of the mountain for growing crops. Jabal Akhdar was initially inhabited by the ancient Arab tribe Bani Riyam (al Riyami). However, most descendants of the tribe now live in nearby towns such as Nizwa, Izki and Ibra.

A WEALTH OF HISTORY AND CULTUREAlila Jabal Akhdar lies within the interior region of Al Dakhiliyah, which besides being endowed with spectacular scenery, is the cultural hear t of Oman. The region comprises eight ‘wilayats’ or districts, among them Adam, Bahla, Al Hamra, Jabreen, and the regional centre of Nizwa. Known as “The Pear l of Islam”, Nizwa is one of the oldest cities in Oman and its former capital.

Step back in time as you explore the rich histor y of this region immor talised in an array of ancient for ts, castles, mosques and UNESCO heritage sites. From the 17th century Nizwa For t and the magnificent Jabreen Castle totraditional souks and the famous potter y of Bahla, the region offers enthralling sights and experiences.

LOCATIONAlila Jabal Akhdar is located about a 2.5-hour drive from Muscat and 5.5 hours from Dubai. From the checkpoint at Birkat-Al-Muz, access is restricted to four-wheel drive only. The journey here takes you through spectacular scenery that shifts from vast deser t plains to the awe-inspiring mountain landscapes.

The resor t itself sits on a cliff over looking a dramatic gorge, surrounded by incredible 360-degree views of themountains.

Climate Jabal Akhdar is known for its Mediterranean climate. From December to March, daytime temperatures average around 20°C, while at night it can drop to as low as 0°C. During summer from April to September, daytime temperatures rise to around 26-33°C with occasional rain.

Language The local language is Arabic. However, Balochi and a number of different dialects as well as English are widely spoken.

Religious Faiths The majority of Omanis are Ibadhi Muslim. The society is mostly tolerant.

FOGGINGIn order to control insects on the resor t, we schedule fogging on an as-required basis. This ser vice incorporates a “fogging machine” which generates insecticide vapours or mist to eliminate mosquito breeding. Guests will be informed in advance of the schedule. The insecticides used are permitted for Public Hygiene and are approved by the World Health Organisation.

SETTLING IN

LOCAL DRESS CODEPlease feel comfor table to dress as you wish at the resor t. We request that in the main public areas, guests cover their shoulders and knees. Any form of nudity is not permitted in the public areas out of respect for local customs. This includes topless sunbathing for ladies.

Dressing appropriately is perhaps the single most impor tant thing to remember. Women should wear loose clothing, with arms and shoulders covered. Skir ts, if worn, should reach at least beneath the knee, although wearing trousers is probably a better option. It’s also useful to carr y a shawl to cover your hair in more conservative areas. Dress codes are less crucial for men, although many Omanis will look rather askance at blokes dressed in tight or thigh-length shor ts or singlets – below-the-knee shor ts are probably OK, although it’s best to err on the side of caution and wear trousers, even if it means foregoing a tan. For both men and women, it helps to dress conservatively, especially in rural areas. Ripped jeans, combat fatigues, dodgy T-shir ts with inappropriate slogans or images and elaborate piercings are unlikely to play well in a rural village in deepest Sharqiya. Inside foreign-oriented tourist hotels more Western standards prevail, although it’s still polite not to wander around in a bikini away from the pool or beach.

The risks include but are not limited to: unevensurfaces, protruding rocks, open railings/fencing, unguarded drops, cliff edges and ravines, loose rocks which could move or fall with little warning, and wild animals. In the interests of safety, we would to remind our guests to be mindful of the natural surroundings of the resor t and to not trespass beyond the designated walkways and fences.

Please ensure you take heed of the warning signs placed around the resor t proper ty (avoid areas marked as hazardous, and do not climb any safety fences or barriers) and follow any guidance provided by our team. Parents are responsible for supervising any children in their care at all times whilst on the resor t premises and monitoring their behaviour to mitigate any risk to themselves or others, when using the swimming pool and/or par ticipating in any resor t activities.

The safety and security of our guests is our highest priority. Alila Jabal Akhdar’s private security guards are on 24-hour duty throughout the resor t area. Professionally trained staff and the latest security system of closed circuit televisions are in place to ensure an unparalleled level of safety and security.

Ear thCheck science has been developed by the STCRC over a period of 10 years and is reviewed annually to ensure that it meets international standards relative to GreenHouse Gas protocol and cer tification.Ear thCheck complies with the motion agreement which outlines the guidelines and principles for an international sustainable tourism cer tification programme.

In the area of operations, Alila Jabal Akhdar will implement regular updates to environmental management systems and implement action plans in accordance with the requirements of the Ear thCheck Company Standard. We are committed to maintaining environmental and social sustainability for our resor t operations at all times. Our commitments are as follows:

- Recognise the process of global warming and ensure that greenhouse gas emissions are minimised.

- Energy efficiency and resource conservation. Minimise the use of energy where possible and ensure that the fresh water supply is sustainable and fresh water use is minimised.

- Conduct operations in a way that does not adversely affect local cultures, or social and cultural heritage and preferably benefits the local community.

- To select only products and materials from environmentally responsible sources, giving priority to local sources.

- Treat waste water and discharge effluence in a manner which will cause the least ecological harm.

- Minimise the production of solid waste through the 3Rs (Reduce and Recycle) where practical and ensure that any solid waste disposal will cause the least ecological harm.

Based on the above issues, we have developed the following Operational Environmental Management System (OEMS) and are committed to building on it over time to ensure that management systems are in place to prevent environmen-tal damage from the operation of the resor t.

STAFF TRAININGStaff training is designed to ensure systems are operated efficiently and that the response to any potential emergency is well understood, coordinated and effective. Training is to be provided for all employees to create awareness regarding energy conservation and environmentally responsible behaviour. This will be under taken bi-annually.

WASTE MINIMISATIONThe project incorporates a dedicated area for the separation of waste materials for recycling. Non-recyclable materials are disposed of in a government-approved waste facility and an in-house recycling programme has been established to assist in separating rubbish. Guests are also to be made aware of recycling initiatives through resor t literature. Training will be provided to employees to inform them of procedures for recycling, and trolleys used for housekeeping are modi-fied to accommodate the sor ting of waste. We are working towards zero waste to landfill in 2019.

RESOURCE CONSERVATIONTo ensure efficient electrical consumption, a maintenance schedule has been developed to ensure that regularmaintenance is under taken on electrical and mechanical equipment. This is developed on the recommendations ofproject consultants and suppliers. Sub metering systems have been installed for utilities to different sections in the resor t. Each section is charged for their usage respectively.

POLLUTION REDUCTION PROCESSESChemicals used in the proper ty are low phosphate, environmentally fr iendly, biodegradable and non-toxic. All products are provided with a Material Safety Data Sheet and Product Technical Specification as a reference for effective and efficient use. Indigenous low water use vegetation has been specified for the plantation sys-tem to ensure the reduced use of fer tilisers and pesticides.

GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONSWe are also targeting to reduce or at best offset the proper ty’s carbon footprint through the development of alternative projects where possible, solar and wind energy, financial investment in credited sustainable plantations.

GREEN-BUYING POLICYA green-buying policy has been developed for the operation of the resor t.

SOCIAL COMMITMENTWe offer our guests the oppor tunity to par ticipate in our environmental activities by constantly creating new AlilaExperiences in suppor t of this policy while proactively encouraging tourism operators in our region to think green, especially in preserving the waterways, minimising their use of plastic, and waste management.

To promote our community relationship we are committed to selecting the majority of our employees from the local area. We utilise fresh local produce from our local suppliers in the first instance with a preference for those in prof-it-sharing co-operative organisations. WATER USE IN OPERATIONSThere are various water supplies available for the site – mains, recycled (grey water and black water), and rainwater. Selection of water minimisation devices such as WCs with dual-flush systems and low-flow showerheads and taps are to suppor t our water conservation programme. The use of indigenous low water use plants is also to reduce water used in landscape watering.

A sewage treatment plant is installed to treat grey water and black water through a bio system and recycle the water for irrigation. As much water as possible is recycled through this system.

To reduce water discarded through the pool filtration process and chemical use associated with swimming pools, our pools are treated with a salt pool chlorination system.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY AND MANAGEMENTWe are committed to ensuring that all appliances and equipment used in the resor t are in the best condition. Old equipment that needs to be replaced will be replaced with energy-efficient equipment.

The Vulcan-HP® heat pump utilises proven refrigerant technology to capture latent heat from the ambient air and transfer it to the water. This is accomplished by utilising minimal amounts of electricity and Freon gas, along with a high performance fan and super-effiicient compressor.

All indoor lightings are energy-efficient or scheduled for replacement with energy-efficient lighting (LED lighting system). The use of active solar systems for water heating, as well as photovoltaic panels for lighting throughout the resor t pathways makes the resor t operations even more sustainable with minimal environmental impact on carbon footprint.

The buildings are also suppor ted by our passive solar design:

- Open design for rooms is intended to allow maximum cross ventilation and daylight penetration – reducing the use of lighting.

-Rocks are integrated into the walls and roof, improving the insulation system of the roof and reducing the use of air conditioning. They are also used for external areas to reduce heat from the sun.

- The falaj system, which double acts as a water feature, is integrated extensively around the resor t. لهــذه المعاييــر الصارمــة.

عمــل منتجــع أليــا الجبــل الأخضــر علــى التناغــم مــع المنطقــة التــي شــيد فيهــا إلــى أبعــد الحــدود، بــدءاً مــن التشــكيات الحجريــة للتصميــم الخارجــي والتــي تــم الحصــول عليهــا مــن الحجــارة المنتشــرة فــي المنطقــة، وصــولا إلــى التصميــم الداخلــي الــذي اعتمــد ــة بهــاء التــي تشــتهر بهــا، ــة التــي تــم جلبهــا مــن ولاي ــة بالمشــغولات النحاســية والفخاري ــة المزين ــة التقليدي فــن العمــارة العمانيالأبــواب الرئيســية صممــت مــن الخشــب الصلــب الــذي كان العمانيــون يســتخدمونه فــي صناعــة أبــواب القــاع والحصــون، رســوم الــورود التــي تزيــن البهــو الرئيســي للمنتجــع مســتوحاة مــن الــورود التــي تنمــو وتزدهــر فــي المنطقــة، المدفــأة التقليديــة التــي تــم وضعهــا فــي البهــو تســاهم فــي بــث الدفــئ فــي أرجــاء المــكان فــي الليالــي الأكثــر بــرودة فــي الجبــل، هــذه التفاصيــل وغيرهــا جعلــت

مــن أليــا الجبــل الأخضــر جــزءً لا يتجــزأ مــن المنطقــة.

يمتــد منتجــع أليــا الجبــل الأخضــر الفريــد مــن نوعــه علــى مســاحة 3.86 هكتــار علــى قمــة هضبــة مســطحة ذات إطالــة رائعــة فــي الجبــل الأخضــر الــذي يقــع فــي مركــز سلســلة جبــال الحجــر الشــهيرة، يتضمــن المنتجــع 22 غرفــة مطلــة علــى مشــهد جبلــي مذهــل، بالإضافــة إلــى 32 غرفــة أخــرى تطــل علــى خــط الأفــق الامحــدود، إلــى جانــب 16 غرفــة مطلــة علــى سلســلة مــن الهضــاب التــي تشــكل مشــهداً لا ينســى، 8 غــرف أخــرى تطــل علــى الشــرفة الجبليــة إضافــة إلــى 6 أجنحــة فاخــرة وفلتيــن مســتقلتين بتجهيــزات

قواعد اللباس المحلي يمكنكــم ارتــداء المابــس المريحــة كمــا ترغبــون فــي المنتجــع. ولكــن نرجــو مــن الضيــوف الكــرام تغطيــة الكتفيــن والركبتيــن أثنــاء تواجدهــم فــي المناطــق العامــة الرئيســية. حيــث لا يُســمح بارتــداء المابــس غيــر المحتشــمة فــي الأماكــن العامــة احترامًــا للعــادات
