Prof. S.M.Manimegalai of the Department of Computer Applications presented a paper entitled “Comparison of DCT and DWT Image Compression” in the International Conference for Recent Innovations in Computational Science organised by the School of Computational Studies Hindustan College of Arts and Science on the 20th and 21st September 2017. In this image we see Prof. S.M.Manimegalai receiving the certificate from the organisers of the conference.

ø Department of Visual Communication On 8th September 2017, the students of the Department got an opportunity to interact with Dr.P.Subramaniyam, Director, Tribal Research Centre. The director was invited by the department to conduct a workshop on “Visual Anthropology and Visual Culture”, which is not a very familiar subject to the students and not a very discussed topic among academics.

The invited speaker started the session by posing questions on culture. He then incorporated the responses given by students into his talk and talked about the influence of culture on visual portrayals. He also pointed out to students as to how each tribe can be identified by its artifacts and also explained how different cultural practices and customs are predominant in different tribal communities.

Dr.P.Subramaniyam then showed the students a

documentary “Nanook of the North” which is a classic documentary on the lives of the Inuits shot in the year 1922. The documentary follows the life of one Inuk named Nanook and his family, who led a very tough life battling the vagaries of nature especially the unrelenting cold of the Arctic.

The students found the workshop to be very enriching.

ø  The Loh Purush (The Iron Man of India) - Sardar Vallabhai Patel

When India attained Independence and the country started celebrating its new found freedom from the British, one man was very busy persuading nearly 565 states (which were practically independent at that time) to join the Indian Union. This was a necessary and urgent action that had to be taken to ensure the unity and territorial integrity of the new nation. The British had created enough mischief during their rule and had divided us on religious and ethnic lines. As a parting shot the British Raj in the Indian Independence Act 1947 had created a recipe for chaos and subsequent civil war by declaring that any state which chooses not to join the Indian Union shall be recognised by them as independent and shall be given the status equal to that of the Indian Union.

Almost all the states acceded to the Indian Union thanks to the persuasive power of Sardar Patel. Three States proved very tricky and did not sign the Instrument of Accession. They were – Junagadh (in present-day Gujarat), Jammu and Kashmir and Hyderabad (which had territory covering areas in present-day Telangana, Karnataka and Maharashtra. Finally, they too were persuaded to sign the Instrument of Accession and join the Indian Union.

These actions earned Sardar Patel the sobriquet Loh Purush (Iron Man of India). It is very sad that he passed away on 15th December 1950 at the age of 75 and left us without finding a permanent solution to the Kashmir Issue.

Rashtriya Ekta Diwas (National Integration Day) The present government at the centre under Shri

Narendra Modi decided to celebrate Sardar Patel’s birthday 30th October as Rashtriya Ekta Diwas (National Integration Day). The celebrations in our college were marked by a presentation on the Iron Man of India by the Director, R & D, Dr.N.Rajendra Naidu. 400 students attended the presentation in batches. A quiz was conducted on Sardar Patel’s life. All the students took the Rashtirya Ekta Diwas Pledge. The students are very proud that India has produced such great personalities like Sardar Patel.

ø  Department of Tamil- Shift -2

The Collectorate of Tiruvallur District and the Tamil Development Department of Tiruvallur District organised programmes for the development of Tamil language on 15th September 2017 in our college. In connection with this, the Department of Tamil-Shift 2 was tasked with conducting competitions to bring out the creativity of the students. The competitions included Essay Writing, Poetry Writing and Extempore. There was a huge turnout for these competitions and the students participated very enthusiastically. Those students who won the top places in these competitions were honoured with prizes by the Collector of Tiruvallur District, E.Sundaravalli. In this picture we see the prize winners along with the Collector, E.Sundravalli, the Principal, Dr.V.Lakshmi and the Director, R&D, Dr.N.Rajendra Naidu.

ø Department of Hindi- Hindi Month Celebrations

As part of the Hindi month celebrations conducted by the Hindi Department, diverse activities and functions were organised to celebrate the Hindi Language and create an awareness among students about the utilitarian value of learning the language. Sri S.Parthasarathy, Chairman, Education Council, Dakshin Bharat Hindi Prachar Sabha was the invited speaker on the 28th of September 2017.

The invited speaker addressed the students and stressed on the importance of learning the Hindi Language. This is especially important for the students studying in their final year since a knowledge of the Hindi language would increase their prospects of applying for suitable positions in the job market in the northern parts of India. His comments bear a huge significance in the background of rising unemployment among graduates especially engineering graduates in Tamilnadu. We see the Principal Dr.V.Lakshmi honouring the invited speaker with a shawl and a Memento. The Director, R&D, Dr.N.Rajendra Naidu and Professors C.Manikandan and Zainabee of the Hindi Department can also be seen in the picture.

The Department organised a workshop on the topic “Radio Medium-Present and Future” on 13th August 2017. The Department invited Dr.T.Jaisakthivel,Assistant Professor, Department of Mass Communication and Journalism, University of Madras to conduct the workshop. He started his session by giving an introduction to the different kinds of radio stations, the bands that are used in the radio stations and the frequencies in which they can be received by radio users. He then talked about the structure of

a radio station, the fundamentals of broadcasting technology, and then highlighted the importance of community radio station. Community Radio is usually started by college students inside

the campus and broadcasts programs by the students on topics that are of social relevance to the college and its environs.

Dr.T.Sakthivel also gave some useful tips to the students on how to make a living out of writing blogs and also on how to capture and record natural sound effects. Such recordings can be sold for a hefty price

in the online market. He also gave the students tips on how to earn money through websites.

There was a question and answer session following the talk.

The global gender gap report was first published in 2006 by the World Economic

Forum (WEF). The Global Gender Gap Index is an index designed to measure gender equality. It was first introduced in 2006 to capture the magnitude of gender based disparities and tracking their progress overtime.

Gender parity is fundamental to whether and how economies and societies thrive. The global gender gap report benchmarks 144 countries on their progress towards gender parity. Gender parity of these 144 countries were studied using the following thematic dimensions: Economic participation and opportunity, educational attainment, health and survival and political empowerment. In addition this year’s analysis includes dynamics of gender gap across industry talent pools and occupation. Countries

are ranked based on scores ranking from 0-1 (lowest to highest parity) It is released every year by WEF since 2006. Overall 68% of the global gender gap has been closed. At the current rate of progress global gender gap will take 100 years to bridge.

India’s rank was 141 which was the fourth place from the bottom in two indicators i.e. health and survival. It was mainly due to India’s poor sex- ratio at birth which still points to a strong preference for the male child. In the economic participation and opportunities for women indicator India ranked 139 down from 136 last year. It was due to the fact that on an average, a woman in India gets paid only 60% of what her male counterpart gets for the same kind of work.
